100X Returns: I Can Assign Quests to Anyone

Chapter 74: Ch 74: Exodus

The night air outside the subway entrance was freezing, but the barrier pulsing from the newly erected obelisk filled the Detroit camp with a steady, comforting warmth. Raidan led his four commanders out of the underground passage, his physical frame already shifting back to his normal teenage proportions beneath the thick canvas of his coat. The emerald glow of Master Verde faded away completely, leaving only the quiet exhaustion of a boy who had just rewritten the fabric of a local settlement.

Leo, Chloe, Aaron, and Sarah fanned out immediately. Their new class upgrades hummed beneath their skin, radiating a low, disciplined energy that set them apart from the ordinary guards patrolling the perimeter. They no longer looked like desperate scavengers or zealous zealots. They looked like an elite military vanguard.

Commander Vance stood near the southern gates, flanked by a squad of newly converted soldiers. The former military man saluted crisply as Raidan and his commanders approached.

"The perimeter is secure, Master," Vance reported, his eyes gleaming with a mixture of professional discipline and fanatical devotion. "The men have received their new directives. We have heavy plasma cannons mounted on the ramparts, and the ammunition crates are distributed evenly among the squads. Whatever is coming from the south, we are ready for it."

"Do not underestimate the threat, Marcus," Raidan replied, keeping his voice steady and calm. "A Class A rift is not a standard raid. The creature tearing through that tear in reality feeds on pure mana. It will test every single millimeter of the barrier."

"Let it try," Sarah growled, resting her war hammer against her shoulder. "We have the high ground and the system on our side."

Raidan nodded, though his mind was racing through the tactical implications. A Class A rift meant the localized mana concentration of the monolith had triggered a massive spatial feedback loop. If they defeated the entity, the rewards would skyrocket faction loyalty and unlock even higher technological tiers. If they failed, the perimeter would be wiped clean before Citadel Prime ever had a chance to march their armies west.

"Move out," Raidan commanded quietly.

The heavy iron gates groaned open just enough to let the vanguard through. The cold wind of the wasteland whipped across the cracked asphalt as fifty elite soldiers marched in dual columns behind the four commanders. Raidan lingered near the rear, keeping his hood pulled low over his face so he could monitor the system interface without drawing suspicion from his own men.

The terrain three miles south of the camp was a desolate wasteland of collapsed highway overpasses and burnt-out vehicle chassis. As they approached the designated coordinates, the temperature plummeted drastically. Frost crept across the ruined concrete, and the sky overhead twisted into an unnatural, swirling vortex of bruised purple clouds.

At the center of the ruined interchange, the air was literally tearing apart.

A jagged tear of absolute blackness hung suspended in midair, crackling with violent arcs of crimson lightning. The rift was expanding rapidly, pulsing with a deep, guttural heartbeat that vibrated directly inside the chests of every soldier who approached.

"Hold your positions!" Vance bellowed, raising his fist.

The soldiers dropped to one knee instantly, bringing their plasma rifles to their shoulders and locking their sights on the swirling anomaly.

From within the absolute blackness of the rift, a massive, clawed appendage emerged. It was covered in jagged obsidian scales that absorbed the ambient light around them. A low, deafening roar shook the foundations of the highway overpass, sending chunks of concrete crashing down onto the tarmac below.

[ Warning: Void Behemoth emerging from spatial tear. ]

[ Combatants engaged: 54. ]

The creature forced its entire upper body through the tear. It resembled a towering monstrosity of bone, shadow, and void energy, standing easily thirty feet tall with glowing crimson eyes that locked instantly onto the glowing aura of the vanguard.

"Open fire!" Leo screamed, his voice cutting through the rising wind.

Fifty plasma rifles erupted simultaneously. A torrent of searing blue energy slammed directly into the chest of the Void Behemoth. The kinetic and thermal impact was devastating, lighting up the dark wasteland like midday.

The monster shrieked, a sound like grinding tectonic plates, but the barrage of plasma fire barely scorched its dense scales. It swept its massive tail across the highway, sending guard rails and concrete barriers flying through the air.

"Scatter!" Aaron yelled, hauling two soldiers out of the path of the swinging tail just as it smashed the pavement into dust.

Sarah did not scatter. Instead, she charged straight ahead, her war hammer glowing with blinding golden light.

[ Skill Activated: Kinetic Crusher. ]

She leaped twenty feet into the air, bringing the heavy hammer down directly onto the creature’s left forelimb. The resulting shockwave cracked the asphalt for yards around. The sheer force of the blow shattered the obsidian scales, exposing the dark, pulsating flesh underneath.

The beast roared in genuine pain, raising its massive claw to swat Sarah out of the air.

Before the claw could connect, Chloe flickered into view right beside the monster’s eye.

[ Skill Activated: Fusion Overload. ]

Chloe pressed both hands against the beast’s eyelid and released a concentrated blast of pure plasma energy. The blinding flash forced the creature to recoil violently, blinding its right side and throwing its balance completely off.

Leo moved like a phantom through the shadows cast by the monster’s massive frame.

[ Skill Activated: Spatial Severance. ]

He sliced his daggers through the empty air beneath the creature’s knee joint. A invisible blade of pure space tore through the thick tendons, causing the beast to buckle heavily onto its left side.

The disciplined military soldiers under Commander Vance maintained a relentless, calculating rhythm. They cycled their weapon cells with robotic efficiency, pouring wave after wave of concentrated fire into the exposed wounds Sarah had created.

Raidan watched from the ridge, his hands resting casually in his pockets. The synergy of his commanders was flawless. They were no longer relying on brute force or raw survival instincts; they were operating as a synchronized unit forged by the system itself.

The Void Behemoth thrashed wildly, desperate to reclaim its advantage, but it was trapped in a relentless meat grinder of system-enhanced magic and tactical precision.

With one final, ear-splitting screech, the creature reared back its head to unleash a devastating breath of void energy across the entire battlefield.

Leo vanished into thin air, reappearing directly inside the gaping maw of the monster.

[ Critical Hit! ]

Leo drove his daggers upward through the roof of the creature’s mouth, piercing directly into its core mana node. He triggered his spatial severance skill at maximum capacity, tearing the monster’s internal energy network apart from the inside out.

The beast froze mid-roar. Its massive red eyes flickered and died. The obsidian scales turned to ash, and the entire thirty-foot carcass collapsed heavily onto the ruined highway, kicking up a massive cloud of dust and debris.

Silence settled over the battlefield once more, save for the crackling of residual energy from the closing rift. The soldiers lowered their weapons, staring in sheer awe at the fallen titan. Cheers slowly began to rise from the ranks, growing louder until the entire vanguard was roaring in absolute triumph.

Commander Vance walked over to the edge of the crater, wiping sweat and ash from his brow. He looked back up at the ridge where Raidan stood watching.

"The beast is dead, Master," Vance reported loudly, a proud grin spreading across his scarred face. "The vanguard held the line."

Raidan nodded and descended the concrete embankment.

The air still tasted of foul burnt blood.

Raidan stopped beside the massive, dissolving carcass of the beast. The obsidian scales were rapidly turning into a fine, gray powder, caught by the biting wind and swept away across the desolate landscape.

In the center of the decaying mass, a sphere of absolute darkness pulsed with a slow, hypnotic rhythm.

Raidan reached out, letting his fingertips brush the cold surface of the sphere. It vanished instantly, safely tucked away into his personal spatial inventory. He did not need a glowing screen to tell him its value.

The legendary core contained enough raw magical density to power the camp defenses for years, or perhaps forge a weapon capable of piercing the heavy armor of mutated beast.

Leo materialized from the shadows beside him, wiping dark, viscous fluid from his daggers.

Chloe, Aaron, and Sarah gathered around them a moment later, breathing heavily but completely uninjured. Their eyes burned with the exhilaration of their new strength. They had faced a nightmare of the old world and dismantled it with ruthless efficiency.

"Gather the men. We will march back to the monolith. Tonight, we will celebrate our survival. Tomorrow, the true preparations would begin. But note this: Citadel Prime will have seen the energy spike from this battle. Their scouts will be marching within the week."

"Yes."
