Chapter 73: Ch 73: Upgrading The Followers
The silence across the Detroit camp was absolute. It was a thick, suffocating quiet that completely swallowed the rumbling of the diesel engines. Every militia member on the barricades stood completely frozen. Their fingers hovered nervously near their triggers, unsure if they were witnessing a miracle or a remarkably elaborate trap.
Uncle Michael let his hand fall away from Raidan. He took a hesitant step forward, his eyes wide and unblinking. The combat knife remained forgotten in the dirt.
The lead armored transport hissed loudly as its pneumatic brakes engaged. The heavy engine died down to a low purr.
Leo leaped from the roof of the vehicle. His black robes billowed around him like the wings of a dark angel.
His landing was completely silent.
Chloe, Aaron, and Sarah followed closely behind him. They formed a neat line in front of the massive iron gates of the camp.
From the trucks behind them, nearly fifty heavily armed soldiers poured out. These were the very men who had terrified the local scavengers for months. They possessed advanced plasma rifles, tactical body armor, and disciplined training.
Yet, under the watchful gaze of the four cultists, the soldiers moved with absolute subservience. They quickly began unlatching the cargo doors of the supply trucks, revealing crates piled high with ration packs, medical supplies, and ammunition.
"Open the gates!" Leo commanded. His voice carried a strange, resonant authority that demanded immediate compliance.
"Master Verde delivers these spoils to his faithful flock. The military outpost to the northwest has been baptized in the emerald light. They are enemies no longer." said Captain Sarah.
The camp leaders exchanged terrified glances. The head of the civilian militia, an older man named Gregory, nervously signaled the guards.
The heavy steel barricades groaned as they were pulled apart. The gears ground loudly against the rust.
As the gates opened, the civilians erupted into a sudden, chaotic frenzy of cheers. The sight of the food crates alone was enough to shatter their fear. Starvation was a constant shadow over Detroit.
Now, a bounty of limitless resources sat right on their doorstep. People wept openly, dropping to their knees and praising the name of Master Verde.
Raidan stayed near the back of the crowd. He watched the absolute devotion blooming in the eyes of the survivors. It was exactly what he needed. True power in this new world did not just come from system levels or magical artifacts. It came from the unwavering faith of a massive population.
Afterward, he slipped away from the cheering crowds and navigated through the labyrinth of rusted shipping containers that made up the residential sector.
He needed to find a quiet place to process his new gains and prepare for the inevitable retaliation from Citadel Prime.
Several hours passed.
The integration of the new soldiers and supplies completely transformed the atmosphere of the Detroit camp. The military personnel set up a perimeter defense that was vastly superior to the original militia patrols.
Sarah and Aaron established a medical triage tent, using their system potions to heal the sick and wounded civilians.
The cult was no longer just a fringe religious group. They were the undisputed governing body of the settlement.
Midnight finally arrived.
The camp slowly quieted down, exhausted by the sheer emotional whiplash of the day.
But deep within the abandoned subway tunnels beneath the camp, a swirling vortex of emerald energy tore open the darkness. Raidan stepped through the rift. He allowed the digital green aura to completely envelop his body.
He grew several inches taller, his features dissolving into a featureless mask of divine light. The suffocating pressure of Master Verde filled the cavernous space.
Leo, Chloe, Aaron, and Sarah were already waiting for him. They knelt immediately, pressing their foreheads to the cold stone floor.
"Rise, my chosen," Master Verde commanded.
His synthetic voice echoed off the tiled walls of the ruined station.
The four followers stood up, their eyes glowing with absolute fanaticism.
"The operation was a complete success, Master," Leo reported eagerly. "Commander Vance left half his garrison to hold the forward base. We brought the rest here along with all excess munitions and rations. The civilian population is entirely under our sway. They look at us as saviors."
"You have done well," Master Verde praised them. "But this is merely the prologue. The true war is rapidly approaching. Our assimilation of the outpost will not go unnoticed by the supreme commanders at Citadel Prime. They will soon realize their scouts are missing. When they discover the truth, they will send an extermination force."
Sarah gripped her enchanted war hammer tightly.
"We are ready to fight them, Master. Your power flows through us. We will crush their mechanized divisions into scrap metal."
Master Verde replied calmly:
"Your courage is commendable, Sarah. But ten thousand soldiers and heavy artillery cannons cannot be defeated by courage alone. We need to fortify our position. We need to elevate this camp from a simple survivor settlement into an impenetrable fortress."
Master Verde raised his hands. The air hummed with intense magical vibration. He accessed the new Territory Blueprint he had unlocked earlier that day. A massive holographic map of the Detroit camp projected into the space between them.
"The system provides us with the tools for absolute supremacy. Tonight, we initiate the Ascension Protocol."
---
On the surface above them, the ground shuddered violently. A blinding pillar of green light erupted from the very center of the Detroit camp, shooting straight up into the polluted purple sky. The sleeping civilians woke up in terror. They rushed out of their tents and containers, staring in awe at the massive structure rapidly assembling itself in the town square.
Thick, glowing vines made of pure crystalline energy spiraled upward, weaving together to form a towering obelisk. The monolith pulsed with a rhythmic heartbeat, radiating a warm, comforting aura that completely banished the bitter cold of the wasteland night.
A faint, translucent dome of energy expanded outward from the obelisk, completely enveloping the entire camp in a protective bubble.
Down in the subway tunnel, the system interface updated rapidly.
[ Structure Complete: Verdian Monolith. ]
[ Effect 1: Absolute Barrier. Blocks all kinetic and energy projectiles below Class B destructive power. ]
[ Effect 2: Mana Regeneration. All aligned faction members experience enhanced stamina and rapid healing while within the territory radius. ]
[ Effect 3: Territory Claim. This region is now officially recognized by the global system network as Verdian Soil. ]
Chloe looked at the holographic display in sheer wonder.
"Master, you built a planetary shield. It is beautiful."
Raidan nodded, saying:
"It is necessary. Citadel Prime relies heavily on orbital strikes and long range artillery. The monolith renders their greatest weapons entirely useless. They will be forced to engage us in close quarters combat, right at our gates. And when it comes to close quarters, the system always triumphs over steel."
Aaron adjusted his heavy plasma rifle.
"What are your orders, Master Verde? Do we begin training the civilians to fight?"
"No," Master Verde answered flatly. "The civilians will remain protected inside the barrier. They are the lifeblood of our faction. Their devotion fuels our expansion. I will not throw them into the meat grinder. We will utilize the converted military soldiers as our frontline defense. Commander Vance will drill them relentlessly. You four will oversee their progression."
Master Verde walked slowly around his followers. The divine pressure he emitted forced them to keep their heads slightly bowed.
"I am also unlocking the advanced class pathways for each of you," Master Verde announced.
He touched his finger to Leo’s forehead. A burst of data entered the young man’s mind.
[ Subordinate Upgrade: Leo. ]
[ Class Shift: Shadow Adept to Void Assassin. ]
[ New Skill Unlocked: Spatial Severance. ]
Next, he touched Chloe.
[ Subordinate Upgrade: Chloe. ]
[ Class Shift: Tech Slinger to Plasma Sorceress. ]
[ New Skill Unlocked: Fusion Overload. ]
Aaron and Sarah received similar blessings, their bodies glowing intensely as the system rewrote their biological limits.
"Ahhhh!"
They gasped as tremendous amounts of raw mana flooded their veins. The power was intoxicating.
"You are the Four Pillars of my empire. You will train until your bodies break, and then the system will put you back together stronger than before. Within one month, I expect you to be capable of destroying an entire mechanized battalion by yourselves. Do you understand?"
"By your will, Master Verde!" they chanted in perfect unison.
Suddenly, a harsh, blaring alarm echoed in Raidan’s mind. The noise was so loud it made his digital cloak flicker for a brief second. A deep crimson system screen violently hijacked his vision, overlaying the peaceful blue menus with aggressive red text.
[ Critical World Event Detected. ]
[ Warning: A massive spatial anomaly is forming within your territorial sector. ]
[ Threat Level: Class A Rift Surge. ]
[ Location: Three miles south of the Verdian Monolith. ]
[ Note: The concentration of supreme system mana has drawn the attention of a deep void entity. Prepare for immediate hostile incursion. ]
Master Verde closed his hands into tight fists. The glowing green aura around him shifted into a dangerous, jagged shape.
"It seems we will not have to wait for Citadel Prime to test our new defenses. The abyss has noticed our light. A Class A Rift is tearing open just three miles south of our gates."
Sarah gripped her war hammer, the enchantments sparking violently. "A Class A? That means..."
"A regional boss," Master Verde finished for her. "Gather the elite guard. Tell Commander Vance to mount the plasma cannons on the southern wall. We will march immediately."
