"Good," Marcus replied. "Lower wages create higher hunger."

"I am calling to apologize," Cristiano said. His voice carried a heavy, uncharacteristic strain. "I cannot report to Carrington for the pre-season tour. I might not be able to come at all."

Marcus opened his eyes. He stared at the ceiling. "Explain."

"My newborn daughter," Cristiano said quietly. "She has been hospitalized. She is very ill. I cannot leave my family right now. I need to stay here. I hope you can grant me a leave of absence for family issues."

Marcus sat up on the couch. The situation required zero thought. It required humanity.

"Do not apologize," Marcus said immediately. His tone was firm and clear. "Stay exactly where you are. Your family is your priority. Football does not matter today."

"Thank you, Marcus," Cristiano said. The relief in his voice was evident.

"Take all the time you need," Marcus instructed. "Do not worry about fitness. Do not worry about the media. Be with your daughter. Come back when all the family issues are settled. I will speak with Alexander Vance and the board. We will handle the press."

"I will return as soon as possible," Cristiano promised.

"Take care of your family, Cristiano," Marcus said, and ended the call.
