Chapter 235: Return to Osborn Territory
The days on the road east passed with a rhythm that felt different from the tension that had carried them west toward Ashwood Pass.
Robert spent much of it in quiet thought, turning the investigation over from every angle he could manage without exhausting the same conclusions again and again. He did not need to repeat what they already knew. What really matters now was how the future would unfold, but no matter how he tried to approach it, he kept hitting the same wall from every angle.
He still lacked strength. Not enough for the formation door, not for the trial platform that awaited him in the eastern hall, and certainly not for whatever civilization had managed to create a seal that could last three thousand years without breaking down.
Every thread of the mystery eventually returned to the same requirement. Strength first. Understanding would follow, but strength was the door that had to open before any of the rest of it mattered.
Sai spent much of the journey organizing what they had gathered, working through the recording slips methodically until every fragment of evidence had a proper place. He separated everything into clear categories—confirmed evidence sitting apart from the historical record, the unknown civilization apart from the specifics of Guardian Authority, and a final section reserved for questions that still had nowhere else to go.
When he finished, he handed the completed set to Robert without ceremony.
Robert took them and stored each slip carefully inside his storage ring, arranging them in the order Sai had organized rather than disturbing the structure. "These might be worth more than anything else we have carried out of that valley," he said. "Not now. Later, once we understand enough to use them properly."
Sai nodded, satisfied with that answer, and said nothing further about it.
That evening by the fire, Ronan, in his typical no-nonsense style, brought it up out of the blue, addressing the thoughts that had been on his mind.
"i have been through my share of old ruins," he said. "Every one of them eventually gave up something useful. A weapon cache. A collapsed vault. Sometimes just enough history to know why the place had fallen apart in the first place."
He looked toward the direction they had come from, though the mountains had long since disappeared behind them. "Forgotten Moon City was not like that. Every answer we found just handed us two more questions instead."
Nobody argued with him. It was, as far as any of them could tell, an accurate way to describe the past several days.
Eissa had been quiet for most of the evening, studying one of the copied inscriptions by firelight with the same careful attention she gave to everything that did not resolve easily. When she finally spoke, it was not to add to Ronan's observation but to raise something none of them had considered.
"They never called themselves rulers," she said. "Not once, in anything we recorded. They did not call themselves protectors either, though that is essentially what they were." She turned the slip slightly, catching the firelight better. "Every single surviving inscription uses one word. Guardian. Nothing else."
Robert looked over at the slip in her hands. "You think the word matters."
"I believe if they were after a simpler title, they would have gone with one," Eissa remarked. "A civilization that creates something enduring for three thousand years does not just pick their words at random. There is a purpose behind the name they chose, and it is not just any name."
Nobody had an answer for her. Robert directed the question inward anyway, more out of habit than expectation.
"System, what is the significance of the term 'Guardian' versus other titles of authority?"
Historical Interpretation: Insufficient data. Recommendation: Collect More Guardian Records.
He closed the notification and looked at Eissa. "it is a good question. We just do not have enough yet to answer it."
She accepted it without a hint of disappointment, neatly tucking the observation away just as she did with all the unresolved mysteries in her life.
Later that night, once the fire had burned low and the others had settled into sleep, the system activated on its own.
New Passive Function Unlocked: Investigation Archive
Description: Every clue discovered during investigations will now be permanently organized. The System can automatically compare future discoveries with previous investigations. Hidden clues may be revealed when enough evidence is collected. Investigation Efficiency increased.
Robert read through it and accepted it silently. It made sense in a way that felt overdue rather than surprising. He had been carrying every piece of this mystery in his own memory and in Sai's careful slips, cross-referencing by hand whatever seemed relevant to whatever new detail surfaced.
If the system could now do at least part of that work automatically, comparing new evidence against everything already gathered without requiring him to hold the entire investigation in his head immediately, it would make whatever came next considerably more manageable.
He closed the notification and let himself finally sleep.
They reached Osborn territory several days later, and the change was visible long before they reached the compound gates.
The outer farmland had expanded noticeably since Robert had last seen it, new fields cut into ground that had been untouched scrub when he left. Clusters of new housing stood along the approach road, modest but well-built, clearly constructed to accommodate the steam of independent cultivators and families who had continued arriving during his absence.
The outer wall itself had been extended, its newer sections showing the cleaner stonework of recent construction against the older weathered portions closer to the original compound.
Inside, the training grounds were busier than Robert remembered. Groups of younger recruits worked through basic forms under the supervision of more experienced members, their numbers larger than the clan had ever managed before his journey west. The market district had grown livelier as well: more stalls, more voices, more of the general noise that came from a settlement doing well rather than simply surviving.
Even Lena, who had traveled with the caravan far enough to see them safely back before continuing her own route, paused at the sight of it. "I passed through here almost a year ago," she said, looking at the expanded walls and the crowded market beyond them. "This is not the same place. Not even close."
Robert said nothing, but the quiet satisfaction of it settled over him easily. Whatever mysteries waited in the west, this—the steady, visible proof that everything he had built continued growing without him standing over it every single day—was its own kind of answer.
Word of his return moved through the clan faster than he expected, and by the time he reached the inner residence, a crowd had already begun to gather near the gate. Nothing dramatic. No formal ceremony, no elaborate welcome.
Just genuine warmth from people who had clearly been waiting for this day without making a show of it, clan members nodding to him as he passed, a few of the younger recruits watching with the particular quiet reverence that came from having heard his name spoken often enough without having met him in person.
John and Mary were waiting at the residence itself, and the reunion between them was quiet in the way that mattered most — no need for elaborate words, just the settled relief of people who had trusted the outcome and were glad to see it confirmed.
Sarah gave him a full accounting of the clan's affairs over the months he had been gone, her report thorough and organized in the way she always handled things that fell under her responsibility. Recruitment continued steadily. The Contribution Hall had processed its first full cycle of rewards without complication. Two minor disputes among newer members had been resolved without requiring his direct involvement, exactly the way the systems he had built were meant to function.
John reported on training progress across the clan's combat members, noting the steady advancement several of them had made even without his direct oversight, the Foundation Strengthening Array and the Dual Cultivation environment continuing to produce results that no ordinary training schedule could have matched.
The medicinal gardens had expanded their yield significantly; according to the elder overseeing them, the Spirit Herb Garden now produces enough surplus that the clan had begun trading a portion of it rather than consuming everything internally.
Everything Robert heard confirmed what he had already suspected standing at the edge of the market. The clan had not simply held steady in his absence. It had continued growing, exactly as it was designed to.
He had barely finished hearing the full report when one of the elders came hurrying across the courtyard, moving with more urgency than the peaceful atmosphere of the homecoming had carried until that moment.
"A messenger arrived two days ago," the elder said, slightly out of breath. "From the Azure Moon Academy. He asked for you specifically and left this."
He held out a sealed letter, its wax stamp bearing an emblem Robert did not immediately recognize—an academy crest, formal and precise, nothing like the casual correspondence that occasionally passed through the clan's network.
"Nobody's opened it," the elder said.We were not certain it was our place to go."
Robert took the letter and turned it over once, studying the seal more closely. Azure Moon Academy. He had heard the name only in passing, mentioned briefly by merchants along the western road as one of the more significant cultivation institutions operating somewhere beyond the borders he had grown up within. He had not expected it to send a messenger specifically requesting him, least of all while he was still hundreds of kilometers away in Ashwood Pass.
As he studied the crest, a quiet notification settled into the edge of his vision.
New Main Mission Generated: Return to Azure Moon Academy

Robert stood in the courtyard with the sealed letter in his hand, the evening light settling gold across the surrounding compound, and looked toward the distant mountains where the caravan road had finally faded from view days ago.
Forgotten Moon City was no longer his immediate destination. That much had been true since the night he had stood at Ashwood Pass's edge and understood the scope of what actually waited beneath that valley's monument. The road back to it, whenever it came, would not begin with another journey west.
It began here, with a sealed letter from an academy he had never visited, and the quiet, patient work of becoming strong enough to eventually deserve the answers still waiting for him in the dark.
