Strongest Family System

Chapter 234: The Road Home

The sun rose over Lena Voss's camp, its light feeling more gentle and uplifting compared to the weighty days that had passed.

The merchants moved through their preparations with visible relief, hitching wagons and loading supplies with none of the tense, careful quiet that had settled over the camp since the discovery of the merchant token in the pass.

Word had spread through the group overnight, though nobody spoke it aloud in so many words. They were leaving Ashwood Pass behind, and whatever had happened here would remain here, unresolved but no longer their problem to carry.

The missing merchant was never found. No trace of him surfaced before the caravan finished its preparations, and by the time the wagons began moving, most of the group had quietly accepted that no trace ever would.

Lena found Robert near the front of the column before they set out. "I will not pretend I understand everything you found up there," she said. "But you did not have to look into any of it. You did anyway." She studied him for a moment. "Thank you for that, even without answers."

"Some mysteries take time to unravel," Robert remarked. "This one has been around for three hundred years. We were not going to solve it in just two days."

She nodded in acceptance, not wanting to dig deeper, just like she had done the night before, and then she turned back to her wagons.

The caravan set out east with the mountains rising steadily behind them, and Robert watched the peaks shrink against the horizon with patience that came easily now that the immediate danger had passed. Several kilometers out, he felt it — the same subtle release he had felt clearing the valley's narrow passage, the pressing weight of that region's spiritual atmosphere finally lifting entirely.

He directed the question inward. "System, analyze regional spiritual fluctuations."

Analysis Complete. Unusual Spiritual Influence: No longer detected.

Current Region: Normal.

Recommendation: Continue observation.

Whatever was hiding beneath Forgotten Moon City seemed to be keeping to itself, at least for now. That was a bit of reassurance, although it did not answer the bigger question of what would happen when he was finally equipped to confront it.

By afternoon, Sai had pulled out a set of blank recording slips and begun organizing everything they had gathered into a clearer structure, laying it out for the group the way he organized every piece of intelligence that mattered.

He divided it into four categories. Confirmed facts, first. The Keepers had inherited the seal rather than created it. Guardian Authority passed down through generations rather than being cultivated independently.

The First Trial still existed, dormant and waiting. Strong possibilities came next — someone was still maintaining the formation after three centuries, and whoever it was showed no interest in harming them despite ample opportunity.

Unconfirmed theories followed, thinner and more speculative. And finally, the outright unknowns, the questions that had no theory attached to them at all yet.

What was the real reason behind the Keepers' disappearance? What exactly was the hidden observer? And how come there is no one who qualifies for a trial that clearly had candidates in mind?

As Sai worked through it, Ronan and Eissa chimed in with their own observations, filling in the gaps with bits of their memories from the past couple of days that proved helpful.

When the list was finished, Sai sat back and looked at it for a long moment. "We spent two days asking what lies beneath the monument," he said.

He paused.

"I think we should start asking who built it."

Nobody answered right away. The question sat differently than anything they had asked before, shifting the entire frame of the investigation from a place to a people, from a mystery contained within a valley to one that reached back into history that none of them had any record of.

Robert turned the thought over and spoke quietly. "System, identify the civilization that created the monument."

Analysis Failed. Historical Database: Insufficient. Known civilization: Unknown. Recommendation: Locate Ancient Historical Records.

He went over the response twice, trying to make sense of it. Even the system, which had access to knowledge beyond what any regular cultivator could dream of, had nothing on the mysterious builder of this. Three thousand years of history, and not a single name had managed to survive in the system's reach.

The mystery had just become considerably larger than a single hidden valley in this city.

By evening, they arrived at a small town, taking a moment to restock their supplies before hitting the road again. As the merchants busily unloaded their wares and replenished their stock, Robert strolled along the outskirts of the market, keenly listening while trying to blend into the background.

A group of travelers near one of the stalls were discussing something that caught his attention immediately—not Ashwood Pass, but a different mountain range entirely, one they had never heard mentioned before. People are disappearing there too. No bodies. No blood. No witnesses. The pattern was close enough to what they had just left behind that it could not be dismissed as coincidence.

One of the travelers casually mentioned that a tiny white flower had been discovered close to the spot where one of the disappearances took place.

Robert went very still.

He waited until he had moved away from the group before speaking. "System, compare this report with the current investigation."

Similarity: 96.4%. Recommendation: Investigate Future Reports. Investigation Progress: 27%.

No new mission followed. Instead, a quieter notification settled into place.

Related Incidents Detected.

He lingered for a moment, letting the implication wash over him. Forgotten Moon City was not merely a hidden mystery nestled in one valley of a mountain range. Whatever was going on there was also happening in other places, distant enough that no one had thought to link the two.

He said nothing to the others that night. Not yet. There would be time to decide what to do with that information once he understood it better himself.

That night, long after the others had settled into sleep, Robert lay awake looking up at the stars, turning everything over one final time before letting himself rest.

The system activated on its own, the notification arriving quietly at the edge of his awareness.

Main Story Arc Updated: Guardian Legacy Arc.

Current Stage: Searching For Origins.

Completion: 3%.

New Long-Term Objective: Discover the civilization that created the Guardian Order.

The notification faded, and Robert closed his eyes.

For the first time since entering Ashwood Pass, his destination was no longer a hidden valley waiting behind a mountain wall. It was something far larger than that—the forgotten history of an entire civilization, scattered now across regions he had not yet visited, waiting to be pieced back together one fragment at a time.

Far behind the departing caravan, beyond the winding mountain paths and the towering cliffs of Ashwood Pass, the hidden valley once again returned to silence.

The monument stood exactly as it had for thousands of years.

The broken pillars surrounded it without movement, and the Guardian Spirit Flowers resting around its base swayed gently beneath a breeze that never seemed to reach the outside world.

For a long time, nothing happened.

Then, without any warning, the air beside the monument rippled softly, like the surface of still water disturbed by an unseen hand.

A lone figure appeared.

The stone plaza lay in complete silence, with no footsteps to be heard. The valley felt devoid of any spiritual presence. The figure stood there, quietly watching the path where Robert and his companions had vanished from his side.

A quiet laugh broke the silence of the monument.

There was no hint of mockery or hostility in the voice—just a sense of relief. "So…" A tranquil voice floated over the vacant settlement. "After three hundred years…" "At long last…" "…a fitting Guardian Candidate has appeared."

The figure's gaze rested on the ancient monument before slowly shifting toward the distant mountains.

"But it is still too early."

"He is far too weak."

"The First Trial would reject him before he could take his tenth step."

Silence returned for a moment.

The ancient monument remained motionless.

The broken formation beneath it continued operating exactly as it had for more than three thousand years.

The figure slowly raised a hand.

A gentle stream of spiritual energy spread across the plaza.

The Guardian Spirit Flowers around the monument glowed faintly before returning to their dormant state.

"The seal still holds."

"The inheritance still waits."

"My duty is not yet finished."

The voice became quieter, almost impossible to hear.

"I will continue guarding this place..."

"...until the day he returns."

The figure looked once more toward the distant horizon where the caravan had already disappeared.

Then the surrounding space rippled again.

The mysterious guardian vanished without leaving behind a single trace of spiritual energy.

The forgotten settlement became silent once more.

The ancient monument was the only thing left standing under the infinite sky, quietly waiting for the day its chosen successor would finally arrive to start the First Trial.
