Chapter 233: Leaving the Forgotten Valley

They left the Guardian Training Hall in silence.

Nobody spoke as they crossed back through the settlement, each of them carrying their own version of what they had just learned. Robert looked back towards the monument more than once as they walked, its cracked surface and moss-covered stone unchanged from when they had first found it, though everything he understood about it had shifted completely since then.

Nothing here had the quality of a place abandoned by choice. Every building, every scattered tool, every untouched item in the residences they had searched carried the same silent testimony — people had simply stopped being here, mid-task, mid-duty, without warning enough to gather anything or prepare for what was coming.

Sai broke the silence as they crossed the plaza, his voice quiet but certain. "We answered one thing, at least. The Keepers did not fail because they were not strong enough."

Robert nodded slowly. "They failed because the succession broke. Guardian Authority is not something you can simply cultivate your way into. Without it passing correctly from one generation to the next, it does not matter how powerful the person standing in front of that formation is."

"The formation does not care about strength," Sai said. "Not directly. It cares about something else, and whatever that something else is, it stopped being passed down three hundred years ago."

Neither of them said anything further. There was not much more to add to that conclusion yet.

Eissa stopped walking near the plaza's edge and crouched besides a small cluster of white flowers growing at the monument's base.

They were unmistakably the same as the one that had vanished from the archive floor, the same as the single bloom they had found besides the silent clearing near the stream. But these were different in one important way.

They were not isolated, appearing without explanation in places they had no reason to be. These grew naturally here, clustered in small groups around the monument's foundation, as though they belonged to this place in a way the others had not.

Nobody touched them.

Robert crouched besides her and studied the flowers for a moment before speaking. "System, analyze these flowers."

Analysis Complete. Object: Guardian Spirit Flower.

Current Status: Dormant.

Purpose: Unknown.

Historical Connection: Guardian Authority.

Recommendation: Do not disturb.

For the first time, the system had actually named the flowers: the Guardian Spirit Flower. They were not just lying dormant; they were waiting for something to spark them to life, linked to the same power that the formation needed and that the Keepers had once wielded. He gazed at the small cluster for a moment longer before standing up, careful not to disturb any of them.

They made their way back through the narrow passage and emerged onto the mountainside beyond it.

The change came over them the same way it had the first time — the strange, pressing weight that had surrounded the valley lifting the moment they cleared the passage's mouth and the ordinary current of spiritual energy settling back around them as though a held breath had finally been released.

Sai paused at the entrance of the passage, glancing back into the shadows they had just emerged from. "You know," he said, "the valley is completely sealed off. It is not just the archive or the monument that is enclosed. The entire place is wrapped up in its own formation, cut off from everything else out there."

that is why nobody has ever found this place. It is not hidden by distance or terrain. It is hidden because it does not fully exist within the same flow of energy as everywhere else."

Robert considered the thought carefully and then directed a question to himself: "System, analyze the valley formation."

Analysis Complete.

Formation Classification: Ancient Conception Formation.

Estimated Age: greater than 3,000 Years.

Operational Status: Active.

Energy Consumption: Extremely Low.

Recommendation: Authority Insufficient For Further Analysis.

Three thousand years and the formation is still thriving, with hardly anything needed to sustain it for years. This explains why countless years have passed; no cultivators, merchants, and travelers have made their way through Ashwood Pass, never suspecting what lies behind the cliffs—concealed not by chance, but by a design so ancient that it has outlived even those who built it.

They reached Lena Voss's camp as the last light was fading from the mountains behind them.

Lena met them near the wagons, her eyes moving briefly over their packs before settling on Robert's face. "Two days in there," she said, "and you are coming back with nothing to show for it?"

"Not anything," Robert said. "Just nothing you would want to carry."

She studied him for a moment, clearly unsatisfied with the answer but recognizing that pressing further would not get her anywhere. She had learned enough about this particular group over the past few days to know when a door was being closed politely rather than left open a crack. She nodded once and let it go.

That evening, the caravan began preparing to leave Ashwood Pass, its merchants eager to put the mountains behind them after everything the past several days had brought.

Before sleep took him, Robert sat quietly with everything they had gathered and spoke to the system one final time.

"System, summarize the current investigation."

Main Investigation: Forgotten Moon City. Investigation Progress: 25%.

Confirmed Information: Guardian Training Settlement. Ancient Seal. Underground Structure Exists. Guardian Authority Required. First Trial exists. Unknown Observer Active.

Outstanding Objectives: Reach the Soul Manifestation Realm. Obtain Guardian Authority. Locate Trial Core. Trace Primary Guardian.

Estimated Investigation Completion: Unknown.

He read through it slowly, then closed the notification and lay back, looking up at the dark shape of the mountains against the night sky.

They were leaving with more questions than they had arrived with. The caravan that had vanished without a trace, the settlement built entirely around guarding something ancient, the broken succession, the unknown figure that watched from the dark and left flowers instead of violence — none of it had resolved into anything close to a complete answer.

But for the first time since entering Ashwood Pass, he understood exactly what direction to move in next. Cultivation alone would not open that door. He needed to understand what Guardian Authority actually was, where it came from, and how it had once passed from one generation of Keepers to the next. The First Trial was still waiting, patient and untouched after three thousand years, for someone qualified enough to finally step onto that platform again.

One final notification settled quietly into place as he looked towards the distant mountains.

New Regional Storyline Unlocked: Guardian Legacy Arc.

Current completion: 0%.

Robert allowed himself a quiet smile in the dark.

The mystery beneath the monument was no longer something to solve today, or even this year. It had become something larger than that—a destination, waiting patiently the way the flowers waited and the way the trial platform waited for the day he finally returned, strong enough and worthy enough to walk through that door.

Ronan settled onto his bedroll a short distance away, quiet for once, though Robert could tell by the way he kept glancing towards the dark shape of the mountains that his mind had not fully left the valley either. Whatever Ronan had expected from this journey, it likely had not included ancient formations, silent disappearances, and a mystery that refused to resolve into anything they could act on immediately.

Eissa sat near the fire longer than the others, turning one of the recording slips over in her hands, studying the faint traces of the inscriptions they had copied down before the fading light made the details impossible to see. She did not speak, but Robert recognized the particular stillness she carried when something was settling into place inside her thoughts rather than dissolving into questions.

Sai was the last to lie down, and before he did, he looked towards Robert with the same steady focus he brought to every piece of information the group gathered. "This is not something we solve by going back stronger next month," he said quietly. "Whatever Guardian Authority is, it is not a resource we can simply purchase or fight our way towards. It is going to take real time."

"I know," Robert said.

"Does that change anything about the original mission? Forgotten Moon City itself?"

Robert considered the question honestly before answering. "The city was never the actual point. It was just the door that led us here." He looked towards the dark ridge of mountains one last time. "This is bigger than the mission. I think it always was."

Sai did not press further. He simply nodded and lay down, leaving Robert alone with the fire and the quiet weight of everything the past two days had uncovered.

Robert stayed awake a while longer, watching the flames settle into embers, turning over everything that still lay ahead of him. Cultivation to climb. Records to find. A trial waiting patiently in the dark for someone it could finally recognize.

For now, the road home was calling. The rest would come in time.
