Chapter 230: The Missing Merchant

Robert remained crouched beside the stream for a while after the system's last response faded from his awareness.

sixty-eight percent. Investigation progress was rising, a new objective was quietly logged where only he could see it, and the confirmation that whatever they had encountered inside the hidden valley was no longer confined to it. He looked at the short sword lying in the wet grass, then at the tree line beyond the water, dark and unremarkable in the fading evening light.

He heard footsteps trailing him and turned around to see Sai, Ronan, and Eissa making their way toward him. Their faces showed the familiar alertness of those who had noticed he was missing and had come searching for him without needing an invitation.

"You should have called us over," Sai said.

"I wanted to look first," Robert said. "Before anything else disturbed it."

They spread out around the stream's edge, and Sai began the work he did best — not searching blindly, but reconstructing what had happened through careful questioning. He walked back to the camp briefly and spoke with three of the merchants who had last seen the missing man, returning with an account that was almost frustratingly consistent across every source.

The merchant had walked to the stream alone, shortly before sunset, carrying two waterkins to refill for the evening meal. He had seemed entirely ordinary beforehand — no argument, no unusual behavior, nothing that stood out to anyone who had spoken with him earlier that day. No one had heard a cry. No one had sensed any disturbance in the spiritual energy around the camp. No one had seen another person moving toward the stream before or after he left.

He had simply gone to get water and not come back.

Robert crouched again beside the weapon, running his hand lightly over the grass near where it lay.

"System, reconstruct the merchant's final movements."

Historical Reconstruction Level 1 Activated.

Available reconstruction: Partial.

Success Rate: 18%.

The response settled into his awareness, and a moment later, fragments began to surface—not full memories, but broken pieces of spiritual residue clinging faintly to the surrounding space. He saw the merchant kneeling at the water's edge. Saw him filling the container in his hands, unhurried, at ease. Saw him stop mid-motion, his posture shifting from relaxed to still in the space of a single heartbeat.

Saw him slowly turn his head toward the trees.

The image flickered, unstable, and for less than a second, something took shape between the trunks at the forest's edge. A figure. Blurred beyond any recognition, its height impossible to judge, its face nothing more than an indistinct smear where features should have been. No cultivation aura radiated from it. Nothing about its presence registered as a signature the system could measure.

Then the reconstruction collapsed entirely.

Historical Trace Lost.

Robert opened his eyes and remained still for a moment, turning what he had seen over in his mind. Sai was watching him carefully, aware that something had just happened even without understanding what, but he asked no questions. He had learned, over the past months, that Robert's silences were the kind that needed space rather than interruption.

"Search the forest," Robert said instead. "Carefully. Every direction from the stream."

They moved into the tree line and searched for the better part of an hour. No tracks marked the forest floor beyond the merchant's own footprints leading down to the water. No branches were broken. No blood, no signs of struggle, nothing disturbed in the undergrowth that would suggest anyone or anything had passed through recently.

The forest looked exactly as it should have looked on any ordinary evening.

It was Sai who noticed what was actually wrong with it.

He stood still near the edge of a small clearing and listened for a long moment before speaking. "Do you hear that?"

Robert paid attention. Ronan was listening closely as well. Eissa, though, turned her head slowly, her gaze sweeping across the trees that surrounded them.

There was nothing but silence. There were no birds chirping, no insects buzzing, and not even the soft rustle of small animals in the underbrush. This kind of stillness was striking, especially after the comforting background sounds that had filled every forest they had traveled through on their way west. It was the kind of noise that was always there, easy to overlook until it suddenly disappeared.

"The trees look just fine," Sai remarked. "The ground seems normal too. But for some reason, nothing alive wants to come close to this area." He scanned the clearing carefully. "No birds. No insects. Absolutely nothing."

Robert extended his senses through the area, feeling for anything unusual in the flow of spiritual energy, then spoke aloud.

"System, analyze this area."

Residual Spiritual Distortion Detected.

Radius Approximately 30 meters.

Origin: Unknown.

Estimated Age: Less than 12 Hours.

Recommandation: Continue investigation.

Less than twelve hours. Whatever had left this unnatural quiet behind had been here recently, close enough in time to the merchant's disappearance that the connection was difficult to dismiss as coincidence.

Eissa found the flower while the others were still standing in the clearing.

It grew alone besides the base of a tree at the clearing's far edge, small and white, its petals open and untouched by the surrounding stillness. No other flowers grew anywhere near it. No patch of similar blooms, no cluster of the same plant scattered through the underbrush.

It stood alone, distinctly separate from everything else, making it clear that it was not just something that had sprouted up naturally.

Robert crouched beside it without touching it at first, studying its shape and condition. It was identical, as far as he could tell without direct comparison, to the flower that had disappeared from the sealed archive without explanation.

"System, analyze the flower."

Unknown Spiritual Flower flower is confirmed.

Energy Signature Match: 99.8%.

Source: Keeper Settlement.

Robert stayed crouched there for a long moment, looking at the small white bloom growing in the middle of a forest clearing where no bird would land, and no insect would call.

This was not a coincidence. The flower was not random. It was connected, directly and unmistakably, to the hidden valley they had left behind that same afternoon.

The system activated on its own, the notification settling quietly into the edge of his vision.

Hidden Investigation Condition Completed.

New Main Objective Updated.

Current Investigation Progress: 72%.

New Side Mission Generated: Follow the White Flower Trail

Mission Difficulty: A

Mission Description: Discover why identical spiritual flowers are appearing outside the Keeper Settlement. Trace their origin. Determine their relationship to the unknown observer.

Reward: 100,000 System Points. Heavenly Spirit Origin Pill.

Failure Penalty: None

Robert read through it and accepted it silently, the way he had accepted the last one, without a word to the others standing around him.

He took another look at the flower, then at the peaceful clearing around it, before shifting his gaze back to the mountains, where the hidden valley was hidden away behind stone walls that had kept its secrets for three centuries.

The valley lay behind them now, but whatever roamed those mountains was not about to stay put. It reached out beyond the ridge, silently taking a man from his place by the stream, leaving behind the same small marker it had once left in the sealed archive. It was as if it wanted to be noticed—or maybe it just did not care if anyone connected the dots.

For the first time since entering Ashwood Pass, Robert felt something other than the steady accumulation of unanswered questions.

He had found a trail. And unlike everything else the investigation had produced so far, this one might actually lead somewhere.

Nobody suggested following the trail immediately.

Night had settled over the mountains, and even Ronan, who had argued earlier about delaying their descent into the underground structure, remained silent. The white flower had changed the nature of the investigation. Until now, every clue had pointed back towards the hidden valley. Now, for the first time, a clue had appeared beyond it.

Sai took out another jade recording slip and carefully recorded the flower from every angle before anyone disturbed the surrounding ground. He also marked the clearing's exact location relative to the stream and the caravan camp. If the flower disappeared the way the one inside the archive had, they would still have a complete record of its appearance.

Eissa examined the nearby vegetation with quiet concentration. Every blade of grass around the flower grew normally. The soil showed no unusual colour or moisture. Nothing suggested the plant had spread naturally through the forest.

"It was placed here," she said after several minutes. "Or it grew here for a reason we don't understand."

Robert nodded slightly but offered no conclusion.

He looked once more towards the dark mountain ridge silhouetted beneath the moonlight. Somewhere beyond those peaks, an unknown figure continued moving between the hidden settlement and the outside world, leaving behind only flowers and disappearances.

The investigation had finally become more than the search for a forgotten city.

It had become the search for someone who was still alive.
