Chapter 229: Beyond the Valley

Not a word was exchanged as they walked back through the cramped passageway.

The cold stone pressed close on either side, the same silence that had swallowed their footsteps on the way, swallowing them again on the way out, until the walls finally widened and daylight returned in a pale line ahead. They emerged one by one, and none of them looked back at the opening behind them.

It was not until they reached a rocky ridge overlooking the mountain range, well clear of the valley's mouth, that Robert allowed the group to stop and rest.

The change was immediate. Robert felt it the moment his feet settled on the open rock—the ordinary current of spiritual energy moving freely around him again, without the strange weight that had pressed against his senses since the moment they had stepped through the hidden passage. Sai exhaled slowly beside him, and Ronan rolled his shoulders as if shrugging something physical off his back.

"it is gone," Eissa said quietly. "Whatever that pressure was. It did not follow us out."

Nobody answered right away. They simply stood there for a moment, letting the ordinary weight of the world settle back over them.

Sai was the first to speak with purpose, pulling a jade slip from his robe and reviewing the notes they had recorded.

"Let us put it together," he said. "The monument is over three thousand years old. The settlement itself only existed for around three hundred years before it was abandoned. The Keepers did not create the seal—they inherited it from anyone who came before them. Since the Keepers vanished, someone has been maintaining parts of the formation. We found footprints less than a day old. The flower disappeared without anyone entering or leaving the archive. The spirit circulation formation underground has been running, without pause, for over three thousand years. And whatever is down there reacted, although only slightly, to us being close to it."

He lowered the slip and looked at the others. "Every one of those facts is confirmed. And every single one of them raises a bigger question than the last."

Robert nodded slowly, then turned his attention inward.

"Based on current evidence, the system estimates the probability that the Primary Guardian is still alive."

Analysis Complete. Known Evidence: Insufficient.

Probability of Survival: Unknown.

Alternative Possibility: Guardian Succession.

Recommendation: Search for Additional Historical Records.

Robert went through it twice, letting the phrase 'Guardian Succession' roll around in his thoughts. The Primary Guardian who vanished three hundred years ago might not be the one still holding the seal today. Someone else may have taken on that responsibility since then—a successor, chosen just like the Keepers had selected their twelve each generation.

This suggested that the person who left that flower, who dared to walk barefoot through a sealed archive and then disappear at a door that had not budged in three hundred years, might be someone of significance, perhaps even someone with a title rather than just a name.

Eissa broke the silence that followed, her voice quiet but deliberate, the way it was always when she had been sitting with a thought before speaking it aloud.

"If someone's been maintaining that formation for three hundred years," she said, "where do they actually live?"

Nobody answered.

Sai considered it and then spoke slowly, working through the implications as he said it. "There were no food stores in that settlement. No signs of a cultivation residence, no bedding, nothing that suggested anyone had been living there continuously. Whoever tends that formation does not stay in the valley. " He paused. "They come and go."

Robert cast a glance over his shoulder at the ridge looming behind them, eyeing the mountains that shielded the valley from all sides. If the one responsible for the seal was not part of the settlement, they must be making their way from somewhere else, navigating a route none of them had discovered yet.

He directed another question inward.

"System, estimate the nearest possible entrance to the underground structure other than the archive."

Secondary Entrance: Likely exists.

Estimated Probability: 93.6%.

Known Location: Unknown.

Recommendation: Search Outside Keeper Settlement.

The archive was not the only way in. Somewhere beyond the valley they had just left, another entrance existed, one that let whoever maintained the seal move freely without ever needing to walk through the settlement's ruins at all.

The mystery had just grown considerably larger than the valley itself.

Evening had settled fully by the time they made their way back down to Lena Voss's caravan camp.

The merchants noticed them immediately, several faces turning with visible relief at the sight of six figures returning down the mountain path in one piece. Lena crossed the camp to meet them before they had fully reached the fire line.

"You found something," she said. It was not a question.

"Ruins," Robert said, his voice steady. "Ancient ones. Older than anything i have ever come across." He did not go into detail, and the way he spoke made her think it was best not to ask more. "These mountains conceal more than most travelers ever understand."

Lena studied him for a moment, then nodded, accepting the limited answer without complaint. Then her expression shifted, and Robert understood before she spoke again that something had happened while they were gone.

"We lost someone," she said. "While you were up there."

Robert went still.

"One of the merchants," she continued. "Went down to the stream just before sunset to fill his waterskis. Didn't come back. We found his weapon lying by the water when we went looking." Her voice was steady, but the strain beneath it was clear enough. "No blood. No sign anyone fought him. No tracks leading away. He was just gone."

The camp surrounding them held onto that same quiet, vigilant atmosphere it had the night before, but now it felt even more intense. This was not just some old rumor from weeks ago or a tale about a caravan they had never encountered. No, this had unfolded right here, tonight, while the gossipers were tucked away inside the mountain.

Robert waited until the camp had quieted and most of the fires had burned low before walking alone to the stream.

The weapon still lay where it had been found, a plain short sword resting in the damp grass besides the water's edge. He knelt beside it, letting his senses settle over the area the way he had in the archive, and spoke quietly.

"System... analyze."

Residual Spiritual Aura Detected. Energy Signature Match: 96.8% Matched Source: Keeper Settlement Residual Aura. Investigation Progress: 68%. New Main Objective Updated.

Robert stayed crouched besides the water for a long moment, looking at the weapon and then at the dark tree line beyond the stream.

The disappearances were not confined to the hidden valley anymore. Whatever had taken the merchant three weeks ago, whatever had emptied the Keeper settlement three hundred years before that, was the same presence that had just reached a hand out beyond the mountains and taken someone from a camp less than half a day's walk from where they now stood.

It was no longer contained to a forgotten place hidden behind a mountain wall.

It was spreading.

Robert's eyes remained on the slow-moving stream.

For several moments, he listened to the water flowing over the stones, letting the silence settle while he organized everything the investigation had uncovered since entering Forgotten Moon City. Every answer had led to another question, and every question seemed to point back toward the same hidden settlement.

He spoke quietly.

"System, compare the merchant's disappearance with the historical records of the Keepers."

The response appeared almost immediately.

Comparison Complete.

Similarity: 94.7%

Observed Characteristics:

• Victim disappeared without signs of struggle.

• No blood detected.

• No remaining physical evidence.

• Residual spiritual aura matches previous investigation records.

Preliminary Conclusion:

High Probability of Common Cause.

Robert studied the notification without moving.

That was the closest the System had come to connecting two separate events since the investigation began. It still stopped short of identifying the cause itself, but it no longer treated the disappearances as isolated incidents.

He asked another question.

"System, has the anomaly expanded beyond the Keeper settlement?"

There was a brief pause before the reply appeared.

Analysis Complete.

Estimated Influence Radius: Expanding.

Expansion Speed: Unknown.

Current Cause: Unknown.

Recommendation: Accelerate Investigation.

Robert's expression grew more serious.

Three hundred years ago, whatever existed beneath the settlement had apparently remained confined to the valley itself. Now, people were disappearing outside the hidden ruins. Whether the influence had slowly spread over the centuries or had only recently begun expanding, he could not tell.

Either possibility carried troubling implications.

He closed the notifications and stood.

The quiet stream continued flowing as though nothing unusual had ever happened there. Moonlight reflected across the water, broken only by the gentle current moving around scattered stones. Somewhere beyond the trees, the caravan camp had settled into uneasy silence, its guards more alert than they had been the night before.

Robert looked once toward the dark outline of the mountains.

The hidden valley was no longer just an ancient mystery waiting to be uncovered.

Whatever had remained sealed beneath it for three thousand years was beginning to leave traces beyond its borders.

And if the disappearances continued, it would only be a matter of time before someone else came searching for answers.
