Strongest Family System

Chapter 231: The First Restriction

Robert made the decision before they had even finished walking back to the caravan.

They would not follow the flower trail at night. Whatever left it behind had shown no urgency, no aggression, and nothing that demanded an immediate response. Running through a strange forest at night, with barely any grasp of what they were up against, was a choice driven more by impatience than by careful thought.

Lena noticed the change in them the moment they returned to the fire. She studied Robert's face for a moment, then Sai's, and then said nothing about it. She had already learned enough about this group to understand that some silences were not meant to be filled with questions.

Long after the camp had settled into sleep, Robert sat apart from the others and went through everything they had gathered.

This monument has stood for over three thousand years. The journal, penned by an individual who referred to themselves as the Final Keeper, had some sections intentionally omitted before it was sealed away.

The secret archive, marked by its mysterious door and the bare footprints that stopped abruptly at the smooth stone. The flower is now appearing twice in places where it should not have been. The merchant, enveloped in an unsettling quiet, stood besides a stream that posed no threat whatsoever.

Every piece pointed in the same direction.

Someone was still protecting whatever lay beneath that valley.

He spoke quietly into the dark.

"System, estimate the probability that the unknown observer is protecting the seal rather than attacking us."

Analysis Complete.

Current Evidence: Insufficient.

Estimated Probability: 63%.

Hostile behavior: 18%.

Unknown: 19%.

Recommendation: Collect Additional Behavioral Evidence.

He turned the numbers over carefully. Sixty-three percent was not certainty, but it aligned with something he had already begun to sense on his own. Whoever, or whatever, had been moving through that valley had every opportunity to act against them and had chosen not to.

It had taken the flower back rather than confronting them over it. It had watched from the archive's darkness and let them leave unharmed. It had never disturbed the monument itself, never triggered the formation, and never done anything beyond quiet, careful movement.

It appeared to be more cautious than aggressive in its behavior. That difference was more significant than anything else the investigation had uncovered up to this point.

They returned to the valley the following morning.

This time, they did not go near the formation door. Robert wanted to look at the monument again, at the plaza surrounding it, with the added knowledge of everything they now understood.

It was Sai who found it — a section near the base of one of the broken pillars where centuries of dirt had built up thick enough to hide an inscription completely. He cleared it slowly, working with the same patience he brought to everything, until faint carved characters began to emerge beneath the grime.

Only fragments remained legible.

First Seal Restriction.

Below that, in lines too damaged to read in full, only a handful of phrases survived.

Soul Manifestation Realm Required. Soul Age Below Fifty Years. Guardian Authority Required. Unauthorized entry is forbidden.

Nobody understood the third line. The cultivation realm requirements made sense. Soul age was an unusual qualifier, but not incomprehensible. Guardian Authority meant nothing to any of them.

Robert crouched besides the inscription and spoke in his mind.

"System, analyze the restriction."

Ancient Entrance Restriction confirmed.

Restriction Type: Identity Formation. Minimum Cultivation: Soul Manifestation Realm (level 1). Additional conditions: Incomplete analysis.

Guardian Authority: Unknown.

Current Compatibility: 0%.

Recommendation: Do Not Force Entry.

Robert read it twice, letting the meaning settle.

This was about forming an identity, not just a system that evaluated cultivation strength and dismissed anyone who didn't meet a certain level. Sure, those kinds of barriers are common in the cultivation world—simple hurdles that a sufficiently powerful cultivator could eventually leap over sheer force. But this was something else entirely. It was probing for something deeper, something intrinsic about a person's character, rather than just their physical prowess.

Reaching the Soul Manifestation Realm (level 1) was definitely something he could aim for. Cultivation always had that possibility. However, the current compatibility reading of zero percent, despite his realm being significantly below the required level, hinted at something more concerning. Although a cultivator managed to reach the needed strength, they could still fail whatever additional criteria the formation was looking for.

Sai stood slowly, looking at the inscription with the particular stillness that came over him when a pattern was falling into place.

"The Keepers were not chosen because they were the strongest cultivators available," he said. "If cultivation alone mattered, this settlement would have recruited the most powerful people it could find and kept replacing them as they aged or died. Instead, they maintained a structured succession—twelve Keepers, generation after generation, for nearly three thousand years." He looked at Robert. "They were chosen because they had something this formation recognizes. Something that is not cultivation level."

Robert looked at the broken pillar, then at the monument beyond it.

"Guardian Authority," he said.

"Whatever it is," Sai said, "the whole purpose of this settlement was not just to guard the seal directly. It was to make sure that authority passed from one generation of Keepers to the next without ever being lost. That is why the succession record mattered enough to carve into stone. That is why the Final Keeper was so specific about what happened when the seventh name was the last one recorded, with five spaces left blank."

The Keepers had not simply died out. Something had broken the chain of whatever Guardian Authority actually was, and three hundred years later, no one had managed to restore it.

Robert directed one more question inward.

"System, can Guardian Authority be obtained?"

Confirmed. Method: Unknown.

Authority Level: Insufficient.

Recommendation: Locate Additional Keeper Records.

It could be obtained. That much the system was willing to confirm. How, it could not yet say.

The notification arrived a moment later, settling quietly into place.

Main Mission Updated: Ancient Guardian Legacy

Current Progress: 18%

Next Objective: Discover the origin of Guardian Authority.

Reward: 150,000 System Points.

Heavenly Soul Origin Pill.

Robert read through it and closed the notification without a word to the others.

He looked back at the broken inscription, at the fragments of text that had survived three thousand years just long enough to tell him what he still did not understand, and stood there for a long moment in the quiet of the plaza.

He dedicated most of the past year to fortifying his clan's power, and in the last few months, he had been advancing his own cultivation at a pace that left everyone in the region scratching their heads. For him, strength had always been the key to overcoming nearly every challenge that came his way.

This one was different.

Becoming powerful enough to stand at the threshold of this formation would only get him partway there. The formation itself would still look at him, weigh whatever it was actually measuring, and decide whether he belonged on the other side of that door.

The real obstacle wasn't strength.

It was becoming someone this ancient formation would choose to recognise.

Robert remained standing before the broken pillar, his gaze lingering on the weathered inscription.

The monument was silent.

The four broken pillars surrounding it were silent as well, standing like forgotten witnesses that had guarded this place for longer than any kingdom still remembered. Wind drifted slowly through the abandoned plaza, stirring loose strands of moss that clung to the ancient stone. Apart from that, nothing moved.

Eissa quietly walked around the monument once more, studying the formation carved across its surface. After several minutes, she stopped besides one of the broken pillars and looked back at Robert.

"There is something else."

Everyone gathered besides her.

She pointed towards the broken socket carved into the top of the pillar.

Unlike the others, this one still contained traces of something.

It was not a formation core or a spirit stone. Instead, faint scratches lined the inner edge of the socket, worn smooth by repeated contact over a very long period. Whatever had once been placed there had been inserted and removed countless times.

Sai examined the marks carefully before speaking.

"This wasn't part of the original construction," he said. "Someone maintained this section regularly."

Robert looked towards the remaining three pillars.

Each socket showed the same pattern.

The wear was too even to have come from weather alone.

For nearly three thousand years, someone had repeatedly interacted with every pillar surrounding the monument.

The Keepers had not merely watched over the seal.

They had performed a ritual or maintenance process so regularly that even ancient stone had preserved the evidence.

Robert spoke quietly.

"System, analyse the sockets."

The response appeared after a brief pause.

Formation Nodes Confirmed.

Current Status: Inactive.

Required Activation Authority: Guardian Authority.

Known Function: Incomplete.

Recommendation: Restore Additional Historical Records.

The notification disappeared almost immediately.

Robert did not ask another question.

He looked once around the silent settlement—the empty streets, the abandoned homes, the monument that had stood for more than three thousand years, and the broken pillars that had quietly waited for someone who never returned.

One mystery had finally been answered.

The Keepers had not simply guarded this place.

They had been an essential part of the ancient formation itself.

And until someone inherited what they once possessed, the door beneath the monument would remain forever closed.
