Chapter 122 123: Casino
Slow music rang through the pub.
In the centre, men and women danced to the music under the soft glow of red lights.
At the forefront, there was a bar with a petite female wrath demon standing behind the shelves.
Five roulettes were placed beside each other on the left wing, each one with men in black suits.
At the right corner were large gambling tables.
Coins were stacked atop each other, and people played cards.
Another table was just starting the game.
"Camela!" The butler in charge yelled as Camela sat in the chair.
"Mark, I am here to take all of your money again," she said with a gentle laugh. "Tell Marcus to prepare to close down today."
Mark, the butler, just waved it off before dropping the card deck to the opponent.
The opponent shuffled fast and dealt Camela her cards.
Her eyes were fixed on the card for a while before she smiled and slid the two cards closer.
One had its face shown, and the other was covered.
Her hand moved calmly, lifting the covered one slightly to see its face.
Then she covered it back just as fast.
Azrael and Zephyr stood behind her, but were unable to see the card's face.
"Watch, boys, this is how you win," Camela said with a chuckle.
"Now, both of you should make an essence oath to not cheat in the game."
They nodded, quickly swearing the oath.
The way they said the oath suggested that they had been doing this for long enough that it had become a part of them.
"Hit," Camela said, pulling a card from the deck.
She looked at what she had again, then looked at the dealer.
A calm smile formed on his lips as he looked at the total of his cards.
'20.'
"Stand," he said.
Camela opened her cards instantly without waiting an extra second.
The dealer did the same, pushing his cards forward.
But his face turned pale as he looked at Camela's cards.
"21?" He gasped.
The butler smiled as he pushed all of the man's chips towards Camela.
"Such is the luck of Camela," the butler said, patting the dealer on his shoulder.
"Is that it?" Zephyr asked with raised brows. The game had ended so fast that he was sure he learnt nothing from it.
"Deal the cards, stand to end your turn, hit to pick a new card and end your turn. The dealer can only hit if they are lesser than 17, and they can only stand if they are higher than 17. Closest person to 21 by the end wins. Quite simple."
Zephyr's eyes turned to the person who had spoken.
It was none other than Azrael.
Azrael shrugged. He had played blackjack in his previous life. Something he always did after most of his boxing matches.
'I wonder how this game is in this world, though,' he mused.
"See? That's a sharp learner for you," Camela said with a smile. "He grabbed the entire rule from one exchange. Don't be a dummy, Zephyr."
Zephyr could only nod as Camela spoke to him.
What Azrael had said did not make sense. How did he know all those rules when they were not even showcased in the game just now?
"I knew about the game before now," Azrael whispered into Zephyr's ear.
"Ohh," Zephyr muttered.
"Now, let's play a true game," Camela said, looking towards Max.
Mark nodded, walking towards the backdoor.
Soon, he returned with three wealthy-looking young demons adorned in black suits.
"Six competitors," Mark said, spreading his arm as the men settled into one of the chairs around the table.
Azrael and Zephyr were made to sit too.
A maid gave them a menu.
[White chip: 10 wrath coins
Blue chips: 250 wrath coins
Green chips: 500 wrath coins
Red chips: 1000 wrath coins
Black chips: 7000 wrath coins]
Azrael stared at the list for a while before he spoke. "A hundred thousand, spread," he said.
The maid bowed in response and walked towards Zephyr.
"Same as him," Zephyr said before she could reach him.
The maid bowed once again and left for the back door.
While she was away, Camela had begun to push her own chips forward.
"Mark, my cigarette," she said with furrowed brows.
"Pardon my oversight," Mark said, pulling a packet of cigarettes from his pocket and handing it to Camela.
Camela took a stick and lit it with a thought.
Taking a long drag, she sniffled before puffing all of the smoke out.
"Let's go for 10 green chips and 1000 white chips," she said as she pulled the cigarette from the corner of her mouth.
The others did not argue.
They began counting.
The backdoor opened again, and the maid walked in, carrying two small silver trays in both hands.
She set one in front of Azrael and the other in front of Zephyr.
They transferred the chips to the table themselves and pushed the required bet forward.
The dealer was the same one who had played with Camela.
All players received their cards and looked at each other.
"Stand," Camela said, revealing her card for everyone to see.
"This is unfair." Azrael did not know when he said those words.
It was not just him.
"Does that mean I won?" Camela asked with a smile, already proceeding to pull the chips closer.
Her cigarette hung loosely in the corner of her lips as she stood up.
The game went on.
Within ten minutes, a hundred thousand worth of chips had been consumed.
"Camela, you can't play again," Mark said, walking calmly towards the table. "As per the casino's rule, you are limited to winning a million per day."
Camela threw the half-burnt cigarette out of her mouth, releasing a thick cloud of smoke at the same time.
"Fuck Marcus," she said, standing up from the table.
"Since when did casinos have rules like this?" Azrael asked with raised brows.
"No, the rule is for Camela only. Every other person can play as they like," Mark quickly said with a smile.
