Grade 2 Evaluation
Chapter 87
The curse hit Hara before Rei finished reading the floor.
One moment the apartment corridor was empty except for dust, peeling wallpaper, and the smell of old rain trapped in concrete. The next, the door on the left bent outward like something behind it had taken a breath.
Rei saw the residue twist.
Too late.
"Hara down"
Hara dropped.
The door exploded over him.
Wood fragments tore through the corridor. A strip of metal hinge spun past Rei’s face and cut a line across his cheek. Daigo moved before the rest of the hall understood violence had started. He caught Hara by the back of his uniform and dragged him flat while Riko raised both hands and snapped a paper charm across the threshold.
The charm burned blue.
The thing inside the room screamed.
Not human.
Not close.
A long arm unfolded through the broken doorway, elbow bending the wrong way, fingers scraping the ceiling as it searched for the student who had vanished from its first strike.
Daigo grinned.
"There you are"
"Do not engage" Rei said
Daigo’s grin died.
"Boring"
The arm struck.
Daigo rolled Hara under it and slammed his heel into the wall instead of the limb. The impact cracked old plaster. The corridor shook. The cursed arm missed his ribs by a finger’s width and punched through the floorboards where Hara’s head had been.
Sakabe’s voice came through the field charm.
"Status"
Rei wiped blood from his cheek with the back of his hand.
"Contact. Hallway third floor. Curse has reach through apartment doors. Hara nearly hit. No confirmed injury"
Hara coughed from the floor.
"Confirmed humiliation"
Daigo snapped "Breathe later"
Riko’s charm kept burning at the broken threshold, thin and bright.
"It is pushing through the room marker" she said
Rei looked down.
The apartment complex was supposed to be simple.
That had been the first warning.
An abandoned five-story building on the edge of the city. Three civilian squatters reported missing and later heard moving between floors. Low-grade curse activity. Repeated return-path confusion. The evaluation brief called it a probable Grade 3 with environmental interference.
Rei’s first Grade 2 evaluation.
Sakabe outside as field supervisor.
Moriyama on perimeter.
Team inside: Rei for route analysis, Daigo for close-pressure interruption, Hara for tool support, Riko for shrine-adjacent warding.
A clean test.
The curse had waited until they were inside the third-floor loop before showing it had a body.
That meant it knew the building better than the brief.
The long arm withdrew into the room.
The doorframe sealed behind it.
Not repaired.
Forgotten.
No broken wood. No burned charm. No hole in the floor.
Hara stared.
"I hate this building"
"Good" Daigo said "It hates you too"
Riko looked pale but steady.
"My charm is gone"
Rei crouched by the spot where the doorway had been torn open.
The residue was still there.
The building had hidden the damage, not erased the action.
That difference mattered.
Public technique.
Residual Threading.
Low output. Clean enough to work. Messy enough to be believed.
Threads crawled under Rei’s fingers, cold and greasy. Human movement. Curse movement. False hallway memory. Impact residue. A loop folded through the apartment door and into the stairwell behind them.
He saw the trick.
Not stairs.
Return paths.
The curse did not move people forward. It let them believe they were going back.
Rei stood.
"The building is lying about retreat"
Daigo glanced over his shoulder.
"How rude"
"If we run back, we reach the fourth floor"
Hara looked toward the stairwell.
"That is not how stairs work"
"It is here"
Sakabe’s voice sharpened.
"Can you exit?"
"Not through known path"
"Objective?"
Rei checked the charm compass hanging from his wrist.
Two civilians remained inside. One below them. One above. The third had been found outside before entry, dehydrated and convinced he had only gone downstairs for water.
"Civilians still active. Curse body confirmed. Route unstable. Continuing"
Sakabe did not answer immediately.
Then "Time limit ten minutes to next status"
"Understood"
Daigo glanced at Rei.
"Continuing?"
"Yes"
"Good"
"Do not look happy"
"I am injured emotionally by boredom and this is treatment"
Hara sat up, checked his tool case, and swallowed hard.
"I can still support"
Rei looked at him.
"Function"
Hara’s hands shook once.
Then steadied.
"Tool Support. Named field function. I can refuse. I am not refusing"
"Stay behind Riko. Throw on call only"
Hara nodded.
Riko’s lips pressed tight.
"What about me?"
"Threshold warding. Do not seal doors unless I call false room"
She nodded once.
"False room. Got it"
Daigo rolled his shoulders and winced from the older rib bruise.
Rei saw it.
"Ribs?"
"Purple is still not heroism. I know. Move"
They moved.
The corridor narrowed as they advanced. It had not been narrow before. The walls leaned inward by a breath, then widened when Rei looked directly at them. Old apartment doors lined both sides, each marked with numbers that shifted at the edge of vision.
The curse was not only in the rooms.
It was using the idea of returning home.
Every door promised back.
Every door lied.
A sound came from ahead.
A woman crying.
Real.
Maybe.
"Help me"
Hara flinched.
Riko looked at Rei.
Rei lifted one hand.
No one answered.
The voice came again from behind door 304.
"Please, I can hear you"
Daigo whispered "Real?"
Rei crouched near the threshold.
Human fear residue. Fresh. Breath on the inside. Fingernails against wood. But under it, something else. A hook wrapped around the door number.
If they opened it directly, the room would decide they had entered to rescue. Then it would assign the return path.
"Real civilian. False door"
Daigo’s eyes brightened.
"Can I break the wall?"
"Yes"
His smile returned.
"Finally"
"Not load-bearing"
"I know what walls are"
"You know what breaking is"
"Same family"
Daigo struck the wall beside the door.
Not hard enough to collapse the corridor. Hard enough to open a jagged gap through rotten plaster. Riko threw a charm through the crack before dust settled. It stuck to something inside and flashed.

The room screamed with two voices.
One human.
One not.
"Now"
Daigo tore the gap wider. Rei slipped through first.
The apartment interior stretched too deep for the building. Tatami mats ran into shadow. A woman crouched near the far wall, hands clamped over her mouth, eyes fixed on the front door as if it had been speaking to her for hours.
Between her and the exit, the curse hung upside down from the ceiling.
Thin body. Long arms. No face except a vertical mouth where the door number 304 had been pressed into its skin like a label.
It saw Rei.
The mouth opened.
"Go back"
The command hit the room.
Hara, still in the corridor, took one step backward.
Riko grabbed his sleeve.
"No"
Daigo entered through the wall and slammed his shoulder into the curse before it could speak again. It folded around the impact like wet cloth and struck back with both arms. Daigo blocked one. The other whipped toward the woman.
Rei moved.
Too fast.
He caught the arm with his forearm before it reached her throat.
The impact should have broken something.
It did not.
Pain flashed up to his shoulder. The body template absorbed too much, too cleanly. Rei let his knees buckle half a second late and drove his heel into the floor to sell the force.
Shoko would have noticed.
Sakabe might.
Not now.
He twisted, not with strength but angle, and redirected the arm into Daigo’s line.
"Left joint"
Daigo hit it.
The arm snapped backward. The curse shrieked and the apartment walls shuddered. Every door in the room appeared at once: front door, closet door, balcony door, bathroom door, doors that had never belonged there.
All of them opened.
All of them showed the third-floor corridor behind them.
The woman screamed.
Rei grabbed her wrist.
"Look at the hole in the wall"
She sobbed.
"The door said downstairs"
"The door lied"
Daigo wrestled the curse against the ceiling beam. Riko’s charm burned at the wall gap, holding it open.
Hara threw a weighted talisman from the corridor.
His hand shook.
The throw did not.
The talisman wrapped around the curse’s broken joint and pinned it to the beam for one breath.
One breath was enough.
Rei pulled the woman through the wall gap.
The curse tore free and lunged after them.
Daigo met it in the hole.
Not with a strike.
With his whole body.
He jammed himself into the gap, shoulder against one side, foot braced against the other, turning himself into an ugly human doorstop.
"Move"
Rei shoved the civilian into Riko’s arms.
Riko took her.
Hara slapped a stabilizing tag on the woman’s sleeve.
"Body outside the room. Breathe here"
Good.
The curse hit Daigo again.
His rib bruise punished him. His face went white.
Rei saw the opening.
Could end it here.
More reinforcement. More speed. One clean strike through the joint of the ceiling route. He had the angle. His body wanted it.
Too clean.
Too much.
Also too slow to pretend to hesitate.
He chose something uglier.
He grabbed a broken strip of doorframe from the floor, flooded it with just enough cursed energy to look like improvisation, and drove it through the pinned talisman still hanging from the curse’s arm.
The talisman flared.
The curse recoiled.
Daigo fell out of the gap and hit the corridor wall.
"Ribs" Riko snapped
Daigo wheezed.
"Still not heroism"
"Move" Rei said
They moved.
One civilian secured.
One above.
Seven minutes until status.
The stairwell waited at the end of the hall.
It looked normal.
That was worse.
Rei stopped before the first step.
Dust lay thick on the landing. Their footprints from earlier led down.
Then turned upward halfway through the descent.
Hara stared.
"Those are ours"
"Yes"
"But we have not gone down"
"Yes"
Daigo leaned against the wall, breathing carefully.
"Building is smug"
Riko placed a charm on the railing.
It burned, then went dark.
"Shrine marker says the next landing is both above and below"
Sakabe’s voice came through.
"Status in three"
Rei looked up the stairwell.
A child coughed somewhere above them.
Not familiar.
Not copied.
Just afraid.
The second civilian.
The curse wanted them to take the stairs.
That meant the stairs were not the only route.
Rei turned to Hara.
"Tool case. Wire line"
Hara blinked.
"Range?"
"From stairwell to outer drain pipe"
"That is outside"
"Yes"
Hara opened his case and pulled out a spool with both hands.
"Anchor?"
"Daigo"
Daigo’s head turned.
"I love this plan already"
"You do not know it"
"I heard anchor"
Rei pointed to the corridor window at the far end.
"Break window. Anchor line to pipe. We climb outside to fourth-floor balcony"
Hara went pale.
"Outside?"
Riko looked at the window.
"That is four stories"
"Three and a lie" Daigo said
Rei said "The stairwell controls return. The outside wall does not"
Sakabe’s voice cut in.
"That is not in brief"
"Brief is wrong"
"Can the team execute?"
Rei looked at Hara.
Hara looked terrified.
Then nodded.
"Yes"
Riko swallowed.
"Yes"
Daigo grinned through pain.
"Obviously"
Rei said "Executing alternate exterior route"
Sakabe said "Moriyama moving to visual perimeter. Do not fall"
Daigo muttered "Inspirational"
He broke the window.
Glass burst outward into gray afternoon light. Cold air hit the corridor. Hara anchored the wire to Daigo’s waist harness, then to the pipe outside with a hooked tool that snapped into place on the second try.
The first try missed.
Hara cursed under his breath.
Good.
Real fear, real correction.
Riko went first with the rescued woman secured to an emergency charm harness. Daigo braced the line, feet planted, jaw clenched. The civilian trembled but moved. Riko guided her across the narrow exterior ledge toward the fire balcony one floor up.
Rei watched the stairwell.
The curse realized too late.
Every door in the corridor slammed open.
"Go back"
The command rolled through the hall.
Hara’s hands froze on the line.
Rei slapped the wall beside him.
"Not a door. Hands on wire"
Hara blinked.
Hands moved.
Good.
The curse erupted from the stairwell.
Not the thin body.
A second shape.
Same mouth, different limbs, crawling backward down the ceiling with six door-number plates embedded along its spine.
So the apartment body had been only one part.
Grade 3 my ass.
Daigo saw it.
"Rei"
"I see it"
"Great. Hate it"
The curse launched itself down the corridor.
No time for clean support.
Rei stepped forward.
Publicly, he had moderate reserves.
Publicly, he was support.
Publicly, support did not meet a charging curse head-on.
He did not meet it head-on.
He cut the angle.
Nanami’s stable reinforcement settled into his arms like an old coat. Kusakabe’s control kept the cursed energy thin, disciplined, believable. Yuji’s body template absorbed the shock when he let the curse glance off his shoulder instead of taking it full.
Pain exploded.
He used it.
The curse slid past him half a step.
"Daigo"
Daigo hit the spine plates.
Not the body.
The plates.
Three cracked. The corridor screamed. Doors flickered. The stairwell briefly showed its real direction.
Up.
Then down.
Then up again.
Riko called from outside.
"First civilian clear"
The child coughed above.
"Second still inside" Rei said
The curse twisted toward the window.
Hara was still on the line.
Too exposed.
Rei moved again and felt his shoulder protest.
Not broken.
Should have been.
He forced a limp into the next step.
A little late.
No time.
The curse’s fingers scraped his sleeve and tore cloth from forearm to wrist. Hara threw a binding weight into its mouth. The weight wedged between the door-number teeth.
The curse gagged.
Hara stared at his own throw.
"I hit it"
Daigo shouted "Be impressed later"
Rei pointed upward through the window.
"Next line. Fourth floor"
Hara moved.
They climbed outside.
It was ugly.
Good.
No one looked graceful while crawling along a rain-slick ledge with a curse tearing through the corridor behind them. Riko secured the first civilian on the lower balcony. Daigo climbed after Hara, one arm wrapped around the wire, ribs hurting badly enough that his breathing turned sharp. Rei came last.
The curse hit the window frame as he stepped out.
A long hand closed around his ankle.
For one second, the city dropped beneath him.
Hara shouted.
Daigo turned.
Too far.
His foot slipped.
Rei had two choices.
Kick free and let Daigo catch himself.
Or use strength no support student should have.
Daigo’s hand missed the pipe.
Rei acted.
He drove cursed energy into his core, twisted against the curse’s grip, and caught Daigo by the back of his belt with one hand while smashing his other heel into the curse’s wrist.
The movement was too strong.
Too clean.
Daigo felt it.
His eyes snapped to Rei.
The curse’s fingers broke.
Rei pulled Daigo back against the wall and let the motion carry both of them hard into the balcony rail. Metal bent. Pain covered the lie.
Useful.
Daigo sucked in air.
"That was not limited close-pressure competence"
Rei said "Not now"
Daigo’s grin flickered despite the pain.
"Later then"
They reached the fourth-floor balcony.
Riko’s charm cut through the balcony lock.
Inside, the apartment was dark.
The child was under a table, hands over his ears, staring at a closet door that kept whispering his mother’s voice.
Rei did not enter first.
"Riko"
She nodded and stepped through with a charm held flat in both hands.
"This is a room. Not a home. The door has no authority"
The whispering stopped for half a breath.
Enough for the child to look at her.
Hara crawled through after her and slid a small tool across the floor.
"Hold this. It is heavy. Heavy things are real"
The child grabbed it.
Daigo braced the balcony door.
The curse was coming up the outside wall now, limbs bending through window frames below.
Rei looked once.
Too fast.
It had learned the exterior route.
Of course.
"Riko. Child out"
"Moving"
The closet door opened.
Inside was the third-floor corridor.
The curse’s mouth smiled from the dark.
"Go back"
The child screamed.
Rei threw the broken piece of doorframe he still carried.
It spun end over end, cursed energy wrapped around it like a ragged thread, and struck the closet hinge.
Not the door.
The hinge.
The false corridor snapped sideways.
Riko grabbed the child and pulled him toward the balcony.
The curse hit the railing from outside.
Daigo struck the first limb.
His ribs failed him for half a second.
The second limb got through.
It punched into the room and hit Rei square in the chest.
He flew backward into the kitchen counter.
The world flashed white.
Something cracked.
Cabinet.
Maybe rib.
Maybe both.
The System did not open.
Good.
He did not need text.
He needed air.
The curse crawled through the balcony opening, body too long, mouth full of broken numbers.
Hara stood between it and the child.
He was shaking.
He stood anyway.
Tool Support.
Not Tool Case.
He threw everything in his left hand.
Two missed.
One hit.
One wrapped around the curse’s wrist and burned.
Riko dragged the child out.
Daigo staggered forward.
Too slow.
Rei got up.
No perfect movement.
No clean lie.
He let pain show because pain was there.
He reached the curse as it turned toward Riko and placed two fingers against the cracked number plate on its chest.
Residual Threading did not exorcise curses.
Publicly.
But residue carried route.
Routes could be cut.
He drove a thin line of cursed energy through the plate, not enough to look like a new technique, just enough to sever the return-path knot Daigo had cracked downstairs.
The plate split.
Every door in the apartment slammed open at once.
Then shut.
The curse lost its shape.
Daigo hit it with both fists.
No elegance.
No form review.
Just interruption.
The body collapsed into black dust and old door numbers that clattered across the floor.
Silence.
Real silence.
Riko’s voice came from the balcony.
"Child clear"
Hara slid down the wall and laughed once.
Then looked like he might throw up.
Daigo pointed at him.
"Do not throw up on victory"
Hara swallowed.
"I will aim away"
Rei pressed a hand to his chest.
Breathing hurt.
Manageable.
Sakabe’s voice came through the charm.
"Status"
Rei answered.
"Curse neutralized. Two civilians secured. Team alive. Hara shaken. Daigo rib aggravation. Rei chest impact. Riko stable"
A pause.
Then Sakabe said "Exit route?"
Rei looked at the stairwell.
The numbers on the doors had stopped moving.
"Stairs are real"
Daigo groaned.
"Now they work"
Riko laughed.
It sounded half-mad.
Good.
Alive.
They exited through the stairs.
No one trusted them.
Everyone used them anyway.
Moriyama met them outside with Sakabe, two assistants, and a medic who immediately went to the civilians. The rescued woman cried when she saw the sky. The child refused to let go of Hara’s heavy tool until Hara told him he could keep it until the medic finished checking him.
Hara looked surprised by his own kindness.
Riko sat on the curb and stared at her burned charms.
Daigo leaned against a wall and pretended he was not leaning.
Rei stood until Sakabe looked at him.
"Sit"
"I can stand"
"That was not a request"
He sat.
The medic checked his chest.
"Bruising. Possible cracked rib. Infirmary"
Daigo brightened.
"Matching"
Rei said "No"
Daigo said "Friendship"
"No"
Sakabe crouched in front of Rei.
Her expression was not soft.
Good.
Soft would have been worse.
"The brief was wrong"
"Yes"
"You adjusted"
"Yes"
"You were late on first contact"
Rei did not defend it.
"Yes"
"Hara would have been injured if Daigo moved slower"
"Yes"
Hara, sitting nearby, looked up.
Daigo said "I moved faster because I am great"
Sakabe ignored him.
"Why late?"
Rei looked at the building.
The third-floor window hung broken. The balcony rail above it bent outward where he and Daigo had hit.
"I was reading return paths and missed the room pressure behind the door"
Sakabe nodded.
"That is the evaluation note"
Rei’s jaw tightened.
"Failure?"
"Correction"
Daigo muttered "Better than failure"
Sakabe continued "You read the field better than the brief. You identified false retreat, false door, exterior route, hinge weakness, and route knot. You adapted under pressure. You directed team functions clearly. You also over-focused on route logic at first contact and physically intervened beyond your declared support profile"
Rei said nothing.
Sakabe’s eyes sharpened.
"That last line will be written carefully"
Daigo grinned.
"It should be written beautifully"
"Zenin"
"Ugly beautifully"
Sakabe stood.
"Preliminary recommendation. Grade 2 evaluation advanced. Final confirmation pending medical and supervisor review"
Hara stared at Rei.
Riko smiled tiredly.
Daigo slapped Rei’s shoulder.
The wrong one.
Rei inhaled sharply.
Daigo froze.
Shoko’s voice came from behind them.
"Idiot"
Everyone turned.
Shoko stood beside Moriyama with a travel case in hand, looking as if she had appeared purely to make Daigo regret existing.
Daigo pointed at Rei.
"He was already injured"
"Then you found the injury and pressed it. Medical genius"
Daigo looked wounded.
Emotionally this time.
Shoko crouched in front of Rei.
"Chest"
Rei sighed and lifted his arm.
She pressed once.
He kept his face mostly still.
She pressed again, harder.
"Bad liar"
Daigo whispered "She is radiant"
Shoko looked at him.
"Ribs later"
He shut up.
She checked Rei’s breathing, shoulder, forearm, cheek, then stared at the torn sleeve.
"This was not all Residual Threading"
Rei looked at her.
The street noise seemed to recede.
Shoko’s expression did not change.
She said "Good"
That was worse.
Then she stood.
"Walk to the car. Slowly. If either of you says fine, I will make the report longer"
Daigo whispered "Tyranny"
Rei stood carefully.
Pain laced his chest.
Real enough.
Useful enough.
He hated thinking that.
As they walked, Hara caught up beside Rei.
"Thank you"
Rei glanced at him.
"For what?"
"Not making me feel useless after I almost got hit"
"You hit the curse"
"After almost dying"
"Most sorcerers work in that order"
Hara laughed.
Small.
Shaky.
Riko walked on Rei’s other side.
"The door had no authority"
Rei looked at her.
"Good line"
She smiled.
"I was terrified"
"Also good"
"That part less good"
"Still useful"
Daigo called from behind them.
"Do not turn fear into curriculum"
Riko blinked.
Then laughed harder.
Even Sakabe smiled.
Barely.
The official evaluation note arrived that evening.
One page.
Oda looked disappointed by the restraint until she read it.
Grade 2 Evaluation — Preliminary Advancement
Student:
Mikage Rei
Mission:
Abandoned apartment complex / return-path curse
Outcome:
curse neutralized
two civilians recovered alive
team survived with minor to moderate injuries
Observed strengths:
field route analysis under pressure
team function command
adaptive route creation
low-output precision
civilian extraction support
limited close-pressure competence beyond file expectation
Correction:
student over-focused on route logic during first contact.
physical intervention exceeded declared support profile and requires further observation.
Recommendation:
advance Grade 2 evaluation to final supervisor review.
Daigo read limited close-pressure competence beyond file expectation and laughed until his ribs stopped him.
Shoko said "Good"
He looked betrayed.
Rei read the correction twice.
Student over-focused on route logic during first contact.
Accurate.
Useful.
Annoying.
Akiha stood beside him.
"Cost?"
He almost answered with an old phrase.
Stopped.
"Next time I look at the door before the floor"
She nodded.
"Good"
No stamp.
No boundary.
No System.
Just the ache in his chest, the cut on his cheek, Hara’s shaking throw, Riko’s burned charm, Daigo jamming himself into a wall gap, and the memory of the curse’s hand around his ankle.
For once, that was enough.
Far away, someone read the preliminary evaluation note and underlined one phrase.
physical intervention exceeded declared support profile
A brush moved once.
Support profile widening.
The page was folded.
In Kyoto, Rei slept badly because breathing hurt.
That was fine.
Breathing meant the stairs had been real.
