JJK: Behind The Strongest

Kyoto Field, Tokyo Fire

Chapter 88

Gojo arrived in Kyoto by stepping over the gate instead of through it.

The gate was open.

That was the problem.

Satoru dropped from the top beam, landed lightly on the stone path, and looked disappointed by the lack of alarm.

"Kyoto security is terrible"

Daigo, sitting on the veranda with his ribs wrapped, pointed at the open gate.

"You climbed an open gate"

"Symbolism"

"Idiocy"

"Same family if you are boring"

Behind him, Geto Suguru walked through the gate like a person aware doors had functions. Shoko followed with a medical bag and the expression of someone who had already found three things wrong with the building.

She looked at Daigo first.

"Still bruised?"

"Still rude?"

"Yes"

"Then we are both consistent"

Shoko looked past him to Rei.

"Chest"

Rei was standing beside the training yard, uniform clean, cheek cut healing under a thin strip, breathing almost normal.

Almost.

"Good morning to you too" he said

"No"

Daigo whispered "She is magnificent"

Satoru tilted his head at Rei.

"Physical intervention exceeded declared support profile"

Rei did not blink.

"You read the report"

"I read the funny part"

Geto looked at him.

"Satoru read the whole report"

"Traitor"

"It was obvious"

Satoru ignored him and walked toward Rei with the loose confidence of a storm deciding whether to become weather.

"You caught Daigo on the outside wall"

Daigo pointed again.

"I was rescuing the mission aesthetically"

"You were falling"

"Temporary"

Satoru grinned at Rei.

"Support students have very strong hands in Kyoto"

Akiha stepped onto the veranda.

"Tokyo students have very large mouths"

Geto bowed slightly.

"Suda-san"

Akiha returned it.

"Geto-san"

Satoru looked offended.

"I received no bow"

"You entered through the top of an open gate"

"Again, symbolism"

Riko, watching from the yard with Hara, leaned close to him.

"Are they always like this?"

Hara said "I think this is them being polite"

Shoko heard him.

"Unfortunately"

Sakabe arrived before the insults became a local weather system. Moriyama came behind her, silent and severe. Bannai was not present. That improved everyone’s mood except perhaps Tokyo’s official records.

Sakabe looked at Satoru.

"Use the gate next time"

"No promise"

"Then next time begins with a penalty lap"

Satoru’s smile widened.

"Kyoto flirts strangely"

Shoko said "Penalty lap him now"

Sakabe considered.

Tempting.

Rei could see it.

Instead she pointed to the training field.

"Joint practical review. No full engagement. No unsupervised technique escalation. No private duel. No theatrical injury. No Gojo-specific escalation"

Daigo raised a hand.

"Define theatrical injury"

Shoko answered "Any injury you describe as heroic"

Daigo lowered his hand.

"Hostile definition"

"Accurate"

Geto looked toward the field markers.

"This is about yesterday’s mission?"

Sakabe nodded.

"Partly. Tokyo requested observation after the report"

Rei glanced at Satoru.

"Tokyo?"

Satoru smiled.

"I am Tokyo when convenient"

Shoko said "He annoyed people until they authorized it"

"Authorization through excellence"

"Harassment"

"Efficient harassment"

Geto’s eyes stayed on Rei.

"The report said you over-focused on route logic at first contact"

Rei’s jaw tightened once.

"Yes"

"And still adapted"

"Also yes"

"Today tests both?"

Sakabe said "Today tests team response when a support profile widens under pressure"

Satoru’s smile sharpened.

"There it is"

Rei did not look away.

The field had been arranged differently from normal Kyoto drills.

Six poles stood in uneven positions. Three paper civilians hung from suspended ropes. A false stair frame sat at the center. Door panels leaned against low stands. Boundary flags marked safe zones that would stop being safe when cursed energy moved through them.

Simple objects.

Ugly possibilities.

Sakabe explained quickly.

"Scenario. A curse has nested in a half-collapsed commercial building. It redirects retreat paths and attacks through structural openings. Tokyo pressure team acts as external disruption. Kyoto team extracts civilians and identifies the true path. Gojo applies controlled pressure only on call. Geto deploys one curse. Shoko monitors injury and calls medical halt. Rei leads route analysis. Daigo acts only if physical interruption is called. Hara and Riko support"

Satoru raised a hand.

"What if I improve the scenario?"

"No"

"What if the scenario begs me?"

"No"

"What if Rei looks bored?"

Rei said "I will survive"

"Kyoto students are cruel"

Akiha said "You keep returning"

"Research"

"Affliction"

The author's tale has been misappropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon.

"Both"

Sakabe lifted the start charm.

"Begin"

The field moved.

Not dramatically.

That made it better.

The false stair frame shifted one step left. A door panel clicked open though there was nothing behind it. One paper civilian jerked upward as if pulled by an unseen hand. Geto released a small curse, dark and low to the ground, its body like a folded dog made of smoke and teeth.

It ran toward the center.

The field reacted.

Safe flags flickered.

Hara started to step toward the closest civilian.

Rei snapped "Stop"

Hara froze.

A pole swung from the side and cut through the space where his head would have been.

He went pale.

Daigo smiled.

"Good stop"

Rei moved already.

"Riko. Mark the left flag false. Hara, weight on the stair base. Do not touch the doors. Daigo, hold"

Daigo groaned.

"That word hates me"

"Hold"

"Still hates me"

Satoru stood outside the boundary, hands in pockets, doing nothing loudly.

Rei felt him like pressure at the edge of a storm.

Even restrained, Gojo changed the field. The flags leaned away from him. Geto’s curse moved more carefully when near his side. The door panels wanted to open toward him, as if the field preferred the strongest object in the room to become the obvious answer.

Rei pointed.

"Geto. Your curse is being used as a pointer"

Geto changed direction immediately.

The smoke curse flattened and moved under the stair frame instead of around it. The nearest door panel slammed open toward empty air.

Satoru laughed.

"Nice"

"Not yours" Rei said

"Tragic"

The paper civilian above the central pole dropped.

Hara threw a weight.

Missed.

The rope snapped anyway.

Riko caught the civilian with a charm net before it hit the ground.

Her hands shook, but the net held.

Shoko called from the sideline "Riko wrist strain if you keep locking your elbows"

Riko adjusted without looking.

"Thank you"

"Not praise"

"I know"

Daigo muttered "She ruins gratitude too"

The field shifted again.

A door appeared behind Rei.

Not physically.

The panel on the right reflected the space behind him and made a return path where there should have been none.

Yesterday, he would have stared at the floor first.

Today he looked at the door.

There.

A hinge-shadow.

Not route.

Attack.

"Daigo"

Finally.

Daigo moved.

He crossed the field in three steps, ribs wrapped, grin wide and ugly. The door panel burst open. A practice curse limb snapped out from behind it, fast enough to hit Rei’s shoulder.

Daigo hit the hinge stand instead.

The whole panel twisted. The limb missed Rei and tore through his sleeve without touching skin.

Mostly.

A thin cut opened across his forearm.

Shoko said "Forearm"

Rei said "Minor"

"Do not diagnose yourself"

Satoru’s head tilted.

He had seen the change.

Of course he had.

"You looked at the door first"

Rei kept moving.

"Reports can be useful"

"Disgusting Kyoto propaganda"

Geto’s curse lunged at the center frame and pinned the stair shadow. Rei used the moment to cross under the second civilian and slice the rope with a low-output thread. Hara caught it this time.

Clean.

Not perfect.

Enough.

Sakabe called "Phase two"

The field lights shifted.

Satoru grinned.

"Finally"

"Controlled pressure" Sakabe said

"Your lack of faith wounds me"

"Good"

Satoru lifted one hand.

The field bent.

Not Blue.

Not an attack.

Just presence shaped into direction.

Every flag snapped toward him. The false stair frame groaned. The door panels tried to align with the invisible weight of him.

Hara stumbled.

Riko dropped to one knee.

Daigo swore.

Geto’s curse flattened against the ground, teeth bared.

Rei’s chest tightened around yesterday’s bruise.

Shoko’s eyes went immediately to him.

"Breathing"

"I have it"

"Again, do not diagnose yourself"

The field wanted to turn Satoru into north.

That was the trap.

If Rei treated Gojo as center, every civilian route would bend toward pressure and die there.

"Everyone ignore Gojo"

Satoru gasped.

"Impossible"

Akiha, observing from the veranda, said "Try being less conceptually loud"

"Impossible twice"

Rei pointed left.

"Hara. Third civilian is not above. It is behind the pressure shadow"

Hara stared at the empty air beside the stair frame.

"I see nothing"

"Throw blind"

Hara hesitated.

Only half a breath.

Then threw.

The weight hit something invisible.

A paper civilian appeared, tangled in a rope behind a door reflection.

Riko moved first.

Good.

She slapped a charm onto the rope and burned through it. The civilian fell into Hara’s arms.

Geto looked at Rei.

"You read through Satoru’s pressure"

"No"

Satoru’s grin turned sharp.

"Liar"

Rei corrected himself.

"I read what moved wrong because of it"

Geto’s eyes narrowed slightly.

Not suspicion.

Interest.

Dangerous.

Sakabe called "Phase three"

Rei’s stomach dropped.

Sakabe had not mentioned phase three.

Satoru’s smile told him Tokyo had.

Geto’s curse withdrew.

The field went silent.

Then Satoru stepped inside the boundary.

Just one step.

The poles shook.

The false doors snapped open.

All of them.

Every route pointed at him.

Every paper civilian jerked in a different direction.

Daigo yelled "That is cheating"

Satoru said "I am a learning environment"

Akiha said "You are a hazard with legs"

"Still educational"

Rei saw the whole field break around Gojo’s presence.

No.

Not break.

Reveal.

The scenario had always been built on redirecting attention toward the strongest pressure. Satoru stepping inside made the hidden rule obvious enough to kill them if they accepted it.

Hara clutched the rescued paper civilian.

Riko’s charms flared too bright.

Daigo started forward.

Rei said "Everyone stop"

They stopped.

Even Daigo.

Good.

Satoru’s eyebrows rose.

Rei walked forward alone.

Shoko’s voice cut in.

"Chest"

"I know"

"That was not permission"

He stopped at the edge of Satoru’s pressure.

Not close enough to touch Infinity.

Not far enough to pretend he was unaffected.

His bruised ribs complained.

His forearm bled.

His body wanted to compensate too well.

He let the pain show this time.

Controlled.

Real.

"Gojo is false center" Rei said

Satoru smiled.

"Rude"

"The exits are not away from him. They are where the field stops reacting to him"

Geto’s expression changed.

He looked at the flags.

Then the poles.

Then the empty spaces between the doors.

"There" Geto said

Rei nodded.

"Three silent zones"

Sakabe said "Mark them"

Rei pointed.

"Hara. Weight to right silent zone. Riko. Charm net left. Daigo. Break center pole when I call"

Daigo lifted both hands.

"Blessed day"

Satoru stepped deeper.

The field groaned harder.

False doors began tearing free from their stands.

Rei felt his public profile strain.

The silent zones were narrow and moving.

He needed speed.

Not too much.

Enough.

He crossed the first gap and threw a low-output thread into the right zone. Hara’s weight followed, anchoring it. Riko’s charm caught the left zone and fluttered violently. Daigo waited at the center pole, shaking with the effort not to hit it early.

Satoru watched Rei now.

Not the field.

Rei felt it.

Six Eyes scrutiny was not like being looked at.

It was like being measured by a world that had forgotten to blink.

His cursed energy stayed wasteful in the right places. His breathing stayed human. His injury stayed visible.

Mostly.

The center pole twisted.

"Now"

Daigo hit it.

The pole snapped. The doors lost their shared axis. Satoru’s pressure rolled through the field and found nothing to become center around.

For one second, the whole scenario opened.

Rei moved before the opening closed.

Too fast again.

He reached the last paper civilian, cut the rope, and kicked the fallen door panel aside before it could rebound into Hara.

His chest burned white.

He stumbled for real.

Geto’s curse caught the door panel before it clipped his knee.

Rei looked at him.

Geto said "Support"

Daigo barked a laugh.

"Tokyo support is ugly"

Geto smiled faintly.

"Learning from Kyoto"

Satoru let the pressure vanish.

The field collapsed into ordinary wood, poles, flags, rope, and torn paper.

Silence.

Then Shoko stepped onto the field.

"Sit"

Rei said "The exercise is complete"

"That was not what I asked"

Satoru pointed at him.

"Sit. I want to see whether Kyoto obeys medical tyranny"

Rei sat.

Daigo looked betrayed.

"You obeyed her too fast"

"I am injured"

"You admitted it?"

"Growth"

Shoko crouched in front of Rei and checked his forearm first.

"Minor cut. Bad sleeve. Chest next"

"Publicly?"

"Your ribs did not request privacy"

Satoru made a sound like he was trying not to laugh.

Shoko pressed along Rei’s side.

He inhaled once.

Too sharp.

"Cracked?"

"Maybe not" she said "Bruised enough to stop pretending"

Daigo leaned over.

"Matching?"

"No" Shoko said

"Tragic"

She checked Rei’s shoulder.

Then paused.

Not long.

Long enough.

Rei met her eyes.

Shoko said "You took yesterday’s impact badly"

"Yes"

"You moved today like someone who should have taken it worse"

The field went quieter.

Satoru stopped smiling.

Geto looked at Shoko, then Rei.

Rei said "Adrenaline"

"Lazy lie"

"Training"

"Better lie. Still incomplete"

Daigo frowned.

Akiha stepped down from the veranda.

"Sufficient for medical treatment?"

Shoko looked at her.

Then at Rei.

"For now"

That was not mercy.

It was a postponed incision.

Sakabe approached.

"Field assessment"

Rei started to stand.

Shoko pushed him back down with one finger to the shoulder.

Daigo whispered "Radiant"

Sakabe read from the tablet.

"Tokyo pressure exposure completed. All three civilians recovered. Team maintained function under false-center conditions. Rei identified pressure distortion and silent zones. Correction from previous evaluation observed. Door checked before floor at first attack"

Rei breathed through the ache.

"Good"

Sakabe looked at him.

"Not finished"

Of course.

"Physical output again exceeded public support expectation"

Satoru said "Shocking"

Akiha said "Do not help"

"I am helping beautifully"

Geto said "He did not use brute force as answer. He used speed at the opening"

Sakabe nodded.

"Still relevant"

Rei looked at Geto.

The defense was accurate.

Also dangerous.

Geto seemed to know both.

He added "Relevant does not mean condemnatory"

Satoru stared at him.

"Kyoto has eaten you"

Geto said "Probably"

Shoko stood.

"Medical recommendation. No further field exercises today. Rei gets rib check. Daigo gets rib check because I dislike him. Riko wrist check. Hara hand tremor check"

Hara blinked.

"Hand tremor check?"

"You threw blind twice and almost fainted after. Hand"

He offered it.

Riko offered hers before being asked.

"Learning" Shoko said

Riko smiled despite herself.

Satoru wandered toward Rei as Shoko moved to Hara.

"You have improved"

Rei looked up.

"Terrible news"

"Very"

Daigo called from the side.

"Did he improve enough to be annoying to you?"

Satoru looked delighted.

"He was always annoying to me"

"Then worthless metric"

Akiha said "Use a better one"

Satoru glanced at Rei.

Then at the broken pole.

Then at the silent zones where the flags had stopped shaking.

"He stopped treating me like the only thing happening"

That landed harder than a joke.

Rei did not answer.

Geto did.

"That is improvement for both of you"

Satoru made a face.

"Do not include me in lessons"

"You entered the field as a lesson"

"That was different"

"No"

Shoko said from behind them "It was not"

Satoru threw up his hands.

"Mutiny"

Rei pushed himself to standing before Shoko could stop him.

She turned.

He froze.

She stared.

He sat back down.

Daigo laughed, then grabbed his ribs.

"Regret" Shoko said

"Medical?"

"Obvious"

The practical review ended there because Shoko made ending it an act of violence.

No documents were written in the yard. No boundary sheet appeared. No stamp struck paper. Sakabe only said the follow-up would be recorded later, which felt almost luxurious.

For ten minutes, the world was just bodies cooling after motion.

Hara sat on the grass, still flexing his throwing hand.

Riko let Shoko wrap her wrist.

Daigo complained about breathing and obeyed every instruction badly enough to preserve dignity.

Geto spoke quietly with Sakabe about silent zones and pressure distortion.

Akiha watched Satoru watch Rei and did not interrupt because the watching was not yet a room.

Rei sat under the veranda shade with one hand against his ribs.

Satoru dropped beside him without asking.

Not too close.

Close enough to be irritating.

"You almost leaked"

Rei looked forward.

"I know"

"Shoko noticed"

"I know"

"Suguru noticed less. More dangerous"

Rei’s mouth tightened.

"That makes no sense"

"It does"

Unfortunately, it did.

Geto did not see the impossible shape. He saw the human consequence around it. Sometimes that cut deeper.

Satoru leaned back on his hands.

"You are stronger"

"Yes"

"Still not enough"

Rei looked at him then.

Satoru smiled.

Not kindly.

Not cruelly.

Accurately.

"For what?"

Satoru’s gaze moved to the field.

"The things coming"

The air shifted.

Just a little.

Rei thought of a boy with white hair and blood on stone, older than now. A spear. A mission. A girl who would die if the world followed its script.

Not yet.

Not now.

But closer.

He looked away first.

"That sounded almost serious"

Satoru grinned.

"I am experimenting"

"Stop"

"No"

Geto approached before the silence could sharpen.

"Rei"

He still used the name carefully.

Not like a claim.

More like a hand held open.

"The silent zones. Did you learn them from barrier work?"

"Some"

"Not all"

"No"

Geto accepted the partial answer.

That was still new.

"Could you teach the concept?"

Rei looked at him.

Satoru smiled.

Sharp.

There it was again.

A useful thing.

A real question.

A possible hook.

Geto saw the shift and corrected before Rei had to.

"Not now. Not as request. I mean later, if there is structure"

Akiha, from ten steps away, said "Better"

Geto looked over.

"Thank you?"

Daigo said "Never be grateful too fast"

Shoko said "Everyone drink water"

Satoru said "I refuse hydration on principle"

Shoko threw a roll of bandage at his head.

It stopped before touching him.

Infinity.

She stared.

He smiled.

She picked up a second roll and threw it at Geto instead.

It hit him in the chest.

Geto looked down.

"Was that medically necessary?"

"Yes"

Satoru laughed so hard Sakabe threatened the penalty lap again.

For once, Rei let the noise happen without turning it into a lesson.

The afternoon sun moved across Kyoto’s field. The broken pole lay where Daigo had snapped it. The flags fluttered. The gate stood open.

This time, Satoru left through it.

He complained the whole way.

That, too, was improvement.
