The Friend Who Asked
Chapter 82
Friendship became dangerous on a Thursday because Daigo asked politely.
That was how Rei knew the situation was terrible.
Daigo Zenin did not ask politely unless something had already gone wrong, was about to go wrong, or had gone wrong years ago and only now found paperwork. He appeared outside Rei’s dormitory before morning drill, hair still damp from washing, uniform half-fastened, jaw set too hard, one hand gripping a folded sheet as if the paper had personally offended him.
Rei opened the door.
Daigo looked at him.
Then past him.
Then back.
"Are you alone?"
Rei looked down the corridor.
"No"
Miyo stood at the far end, visible enough to prove she had chosen not to hide and quiet enough to make that worse.
Daigo stared.
"Why?"
Miyo said "Corridor"
"That is not an answer"
"It is where I am"
Rei stepped aside.
"Come in"
Daigo entered, then looked at Miyo again.
"You do not need to guard the hallway"
"I know"
"And?"
"I am standing"
Daigo muttered something about visibility training becoming a disease and shut the door.
He did not sit.
That was second sign.
He held out the paper.
Rei did not take it immediately.
"What is it?"
"Zenin branch training review"
"Official?"
"Family official. School adjacent. Socially poisonous"
Rei accepted the paper.
The wording was beautiful in the way polished knives were beautiful.
Zenin Branch Supplemental Form Review
Student:
Zenin Daigo
Purpose:
observe developing close-pressure interruption profile
offer family technical correction
strengthen proper channel between school training and inherited combat discipline
Optional witness:
one peer observer permitted if student requests
Location:
West practice pavilion
Time:
third bell
Note:
Refusal permitted.
Repeated refusal may affect branch recommendation records.
Rei read the last line twice.
"Refusal permitted"
Daigo said "Repeated refusal may affect branch recommendation records"
"Yes"
"Paper with teeth"
"Yes"
Daigo crossed his arms.
"School says I can refuse"
"Do you want to?"
"No"
The answer came too fast.
Rei looked up.
Daigo looked away.
"I want to refuse the way they wrote it"
"Not the review?"
Daigo’s mouth twisted.
"I want to hit their form until it stops standing"
That sounded like Daigo.
Under it was something else.
Rei folded the paper once.
"You came to ask me to attend as peer observer"
Daigo’s fingers twitched.
"Yes"
"Why?"
"Because you see floors"
The room became quiet.
Not because the sentence was wrong.
Because it was close.
Rei did not answer.
Daigo scowled.
"Do not make that face"
"What face?"
"The face where you start building a boundary before I finish being embarrassed"
Rei almost smiled.
Almost.
"Then finish being embarrassed faster"
Daigo glared.
Then breathed once through his nose.
"I do not want the whole room there. If Akiha comes, they make it political. If Tomonari comes, they make it Kamo being nosy. If Miyo comes, everyone starts checking shadows and then lies about it. If Hayato comes, they behave better around him and I hate that. If Oda comes, the pavilion burns down spiritually"
"Moriyama?"
"Adult will be there from school side. Sakabe"
"And me?"
Daigo’s jaw worked.
"I need someone who will tell me when the floor is not safe before I call it pride"
The word need sat between them.
Heavy.
Clean.
Dangerous.
Rei looked at the paper.
No mission had summoned him.
No board had resembled his function.
No adult had assigned him.
No label had trapped him.
A friend had asked.
That was worse.
Because refusal now looked like absence.
Rei said "I cannot answer yet"
Daigo’s face shut.
He nodded too quickly.
"Fine"
"Daigo"
"No, that is fine"
"It is not no"
"Sounds like no with nicer shoes"
"It is review"
Daigo looked at him.
"You are reviewing a friend request?"
"Yes"
The anger came first.
Then the hurt.
Then Daigo tried to hide both with sarcasm and failed because Rei had known him too long.
"Cold"
"Necessary"
Daigo’s hand tightened on his sleeve.
"Right"
Rei stepped closer.
"If I say yes because you said need, then need becomes enough"
Daigo did not answer.
"If I say yes because refusing feels like betrayal, friendship becomes assignment"
Daigo looked away.
"If I say no without naming the shape, then refusal becomes proof that asking was wrong"
Daigo’s voice came rougher.
"I know"
Rei stopped.
Daigo hated being seen when he had already decided to be brave.
Rei softened his voice by one degree.
"Do you?"
Daigo looked back.
"No"
Good.
Ugly.
Honest.
Rei opened the door.
Miyo was still there.
Daigo pointed at her immediately.
"No"
Miyo said "I said nothing"
"You will"
"Yes"
Rei said "We need a review"
Daigo groaned.
"I hate friendship"
Miyo nodded.
"Correct"
By second bell, the review room had acquired everyone it should have and no one Daigo wanted.
Akiha arrived with tea she did not drink.
Tomonari arrived with a blank form and the expression of someone already offended by future wording.
Hayato arrived quietly, sat near Daigo but not beside him, and placed a packet of too-salty crackers on the table without comment.
Miyo stood visible beside the wall.
Sakabe came because school authority needed to exist before family authority claimed the gap.
Oda came because paper had been foolish.
Moriyama did not attend.
That meant she trusted Sakabe or wanted Sakabe tested.
Possibly both.
Daigo looked around the room.
"I asked one person"
Akiha said "And that became a room"
"Tragic"
Hayato said "Friendship often does"
Daigo pointed at him.
"Do not make that sound wise"
"It was just true"
"Worse"
Sakabe placed the Zenin request on the table.
"Student request review. Daigo, name what you are asking"
Daigo stared at the table.
Then at Rei.
Stolen from its rightful place, this narrative is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.
Then away.
"I am asking Rei to attend the Zenin branch review as peer observer"
Sakabe said "Function"
Daigo’s mouth tightened.
"Floor-checker"
Tomonari’s brush stopped.
Akiha looked at Rei.
Rei looked at Daigo.
Sakabe did not write.
"Define"
Daigo looked miserable.
"Tell me if the review starts making me choose pride before safety. Or family before function. Or audience before objective"
Oda wrote.
Daigo continued before anyone could praise him and make it worse.
"Not answer for me. Not fight for me. Not decide if I continue. Not make me look better. Not make me look controlled. Not be proof that my refusal is correct"
Sakabe nodded once.
"Good"
Daigo flinched like the word had struck him.
Rei said "What happens if I say no?"
Daigo’s expression went blank.
The room waited.
This was the real question.
Daigo forced the answer out.
"I attend with Sakabe only. Or refuse and accept the branch note. Or ask someone else after naming function again"
"Would you be angry?"
"Yes"
"Would my refusal be betrayal?"
Daigo closed his eyes.
The answer cost him.
"No"
Hayato breathed out quietly.
Akiha wrote something on her own paper and did not show it yet.
Sakabe turned to Rei.
"Your answer?"
Rei looked at the request.
Then at Daigo.
Then at the room that had formed because friendship had asked a dangerous thing.
"I accept one review as floor-checker under named function. I do not accept standing observer role for Zenin branch matters. I do not accept responsibility for Daigo’s choices. I do not accept being used as proof that his choices are correct"
Daigo’s eyes flicked up.
Rei continued "I can call unsafe floor. He decides where to stand"
Oda stamped.
The sound made Hara, who was not present, probably nervous somewhere else.
Akiha turned her paper around.
Friend Request Boundary
A friend may ask.
The request must name function.
Need is information.
Need is not command.
Refusal is allowed.
Anger may exist.
Anger does not convert refusal into betrayal.
Acceptance once does not create standing role.
Being trusted does not make someone necessary by nature.
A floor-checker does not become the floor.
Daigo stared at the sheet.
His face did not change.
That meant it had hit hard.
Hayato pushed the crackers slightly closer.
Daigo took one without looking.
"Too salty"
Hayato smiled.
"Yes"
"Good"
Sakabe took the boundary sheet.
"Copy for student file"
Daigo groaned.
Oda said "Copy for friendship file"
Daigo stared at her.
"That is not real"
Oda wrote:
Friendship File
Daigo put his head in his hands.
"I hate all of you"
Miyo said "No"
Daigo did not lift his head.
"Correct"
The west practice pavilion sat beyond the old training grove, half school property, half family-accessible neutral space, which meant it had been designed by people who wanted every argument to pretend it was not trespassing.
The pavilion floor was polished wood. Open sides faced the garden. Screens could be drawn, but today they were left open to prove transparency while still letting watchers stand in the shade of pillars.
There were three Zenin branch adults present.
One elder with a narrow mouth and a cane he did not need.
One middle-aged instructor with heavy shoulders and bored eyes.
One older student, perhaps seventeen, named Zenin Harumasa, who had the relaxed posture of someone used to being told his restraint was maturity when it was actually calculation.
Sakabe stood on the school side.
Rei stood behind Daigo and to his left.
Not beside.
Not behind like retainer.
Floor-checker.
Daigo had chosen the placement himself.
Good.
Dangerous.
The elder looked first at Daigo.
Then at Rei.
"Mikage Rei"
Rei bowed correctly.
"Zenin-sama"
The elder smiled without warmth.
"The support student with unusual route sense"
Daigo’s shoulders tightened.
Rei answered "Residual route analysis"
"Modest"
"Declared"
The elder’s mouth thinned.
Harumasa smiled faintly.
Daigo said "Are we reviewing my form or his file?"
The middle-aged instructor looked amused.
"Still impatient"
Daigo grinned.
"Still obvious"
Sakabe said "Purpose named in request. Observe developing close-pressure interruption profile and offer technical correction"
The elder’s gaze flicked to her.
"Of course"
Rei watched the floor.
Not literally.
Not only literally.
The room had already made two attempts.
First, name Rei before naming function.
Second, make Daigo defend him and call that impatience.
Floor unsafe.
But not yet a call.
The review began with basic forms.
Daigo hated basic forms.
That was exactly why they started there.
He moved through the first sequence with controlled irritation. His footwork had grown cleaner over the years, though he still disliked any movement that looked too elegant. His strikes were direct, but the waste had been carved down. He interrupted imaginary pressure lines before they completed. Not refined in the clan sense. Not sloppy.
His own.
The middle-aged instructor corrected elbow height.
Daigo accepted.
The elder corrected angle.
Daigo accepted.
Harumasa corrected timing.
Daigo did not accept.
He looked at Sakabe.
Sakabe said "Response?"
Daigo said "Correction makes interruption arrive after the pressure matures"
Harumasa smiled.
"Only if you assume the pressure is hostile"
Daigo’s eyes sharpened.
"That is what pressure usually is"
Harumasa stepped onto the floor.
"Then demonstrate"
Sakabe looked at Daigo.
"Consent?"
Daigo nodded.
"First exchange only"
The elder’s cane tapped once.
"Young sorcerers become timid when schools overprotect them"
Rei did not look at him.
Daigo smiled.
"Good thing I said first exchange before you spoke"
Harumasa’s smile widened.
They took positions.
The first exchange was clean.
Harumasa moved with Zenin polish, fast enough to make ordinary students hesitate and controlled enough to make hesitation look like their fault. Daigo interrupted the pressure line before it settled, not striking the body but striking the space where Harumasa’s next step wanted to become inevitable.
Good.
Ugly.
His.
Harumasa’s eyebrow lifted.
"Again"
Daigo looked at Sakabe.
"Second exchange?"
Sakabe said "If objective changes, name it"
Harumasa said "Same objective"
Rei felt the floor shift.
Lie.
Not full.
Enough.
"Floor" Rei said
Daigo stopped.
Not withdrew.
Stopped.
Everyone looked at Rei.
The elder smiled.
"So the peer observer commands him"
Daigo’s face hardened.
Rei said nothing.
Function.
Call unsafe floor.
Not answer for him.
Sakabe said "Daigo. Interpret"
Daigo kept his eyes on Harumasa.
"The objective changed"
Harumasa said "It did not"
Daigo said "First was form correction. Second wants proof I can repeat after being praised into rhythm"
Harumasa’s smile faded slightly.
The middle-aged instructor looked more interested.
The elder said "Students who fear rhythm rarely survive real pressure"
Daigo looked at him.
"Students who obey rhythm because an elder likes it become furniture"
Rei nearly closed his eyes.
Daigo had not overstepped.
Exactly.
That was the dangerous part.
The elder’s mouth tightened.
Sakabe wrote something.
"Second exchange allowed if objective named"
Harumasa said "Test repeat interruption under social pressure"
Sakabe looked at Daigo.
"Accept?"
Daigo breathed.
"Accept"
Second exchange.
Harumasa moved differently.
Smoother. Less obvious. More invitation than pressure. He gave Daigo an opening that looked insulting, then folded it into a counterroute when Daigo took it.
Daigo saw it late.
Not too late.
He turned the strike into a shoulder check against the floor line rather than Harumasa’s body, interrupting the counterroute but taking a hit across the ribs for it.
He hissed.
Did not chase.
Good.
Harumasa stepped back.
"Better than expected"
Daigo smiled with too many teeth.
"Your expectations are not my problem"
The elder’s cane tapped again.
"Third exchange"
Daigo looked at Sakabe.
Sakabe looked at him.
Not Rei.
Good.
Daigo asked "Objective?"
The elder answered instead of Harumasa.
"Resolve hesitation"
There.
The floor dropped.
Not physically.
Socially.
Rei felt the old shape.
Audience before objective.
Family before function.
Pride before safety.
Daigo heard it too.
His shoulders rose.
One breath.
Two.
Harumasa’s eyes flicked to Rei.
"Will your floor-checker permit it?"
The line was delicate.
Almost casual.
It asked Daigo to prove Rei did not control him by ignoring Rei.
It asked Rei to speak and become leash.
It asked Sakabe to either intervene as overprotection or allow the room to eat the student.
Good trap.
Rei said nothing.
Daigo looked at Harumasa.
Then at the elder.
Then at the floor.
He laughed.
Once.
Ugly.
Relieved.
"You almost got me"
The elder’s expression chilled.
Daigo continued "Third exchange objective rejected. Resolve hesitation means make me call stopping cowardice. Try again if you want an actual review"
Silence.
The pavilion held.
Then the middle-aged instructor laughed.
Not loudly.
Enough to make the elder angry.
Harumasa’s smile disappeared.
Sakabe wrote.
"Rejection accepted"
The elder said "By school"
Daigo turned to him.
"By me"
The words mattered.
Not Rei.
Not Sakabe.
Daigo.
The elder leaned on his unnecessary cane.
"Zenin Daigo, you grow more insolent by the season"
Daigo bowed.
"Yes"
"That was not praise"
"Still accurate"
Rei almost smiled.
Almost.
The elder’s gaze moved to Rei.
"Mikage. Does the school teach support students to halt combat now?"
There it was.
Make Rei own Daigo’s refusal.
Rei bowed slightly.
"My function was floor-checker"
"And what did you check?"
"Objective change before consent"
"So you halted combat"
"No"
The elder’s eyes narrowed.
"Explain"
Rei lifted his eyes.
"I named unsafe floor. Daigo chose not to step"
The words reached Daigo.
Rei did not look at him.
That would make it too much.
The elder said "Convenient distinction"
Sakabe said "Correct distinction"
Harumasa looked between them.
"Again, then. New objective"
Daigo said "No"
Everyone looked at him.
Daigo rolled his shoulder once.
"Review completed. First correction accepted. Second exchange tested. Third objective rejected. I am done"
The middle-aged instructor asked "Because you are injured?"
"No"
"Because you are afraid?"
Daigo looked at him.
"Because continuing would make stopping later look worse, and I do not train inside traps for free"
Sakabe wrote.
The elder’s face went still.
"School has made you clever"
Daigo grinned.
"No. School made me write why"
That answer landed harder than Rei expected.
Maybe because it was true.
The review ended without satisfaction.
That meant it had succeeded.
No one said so until they were outside the pavilion and halfway down the grove path.
Then Daigo stopped.
Turned.
Pointed at Rei.
"I hated that"
Rei nodded.
"Yes"
"I hated you saying floor"
"Yes"
"I hated stopping"
"Yes"
"I hated that stopping was mine"
"Yes"
Daigo glared.
"Say something else"
"You did well"
Daigo recoiled.
"Disgusting"
Sakabe said "Accurate"
"Even worse"
Rei said "The third exchange was a trap"
"I know"
"You saw it"
"Late"
"Still"
Daigo looked away.
His voice lowered.
"I almost stepped because he looked at you"
"I know"
"I wanted to prove you were not controlling me"
"I know"
"That would have let him control me"
"Yes"
Daigo put a hand over his face.
"That is vile"
"Yes"
Sakabe said "Review room after lunch. Medical first"
Daigo lowered his hand.
"I am fine"
A voice from the path ahead said "Wrong school, but still stupid"
Everyone stopped.
Shoko Ieiri stood beneath the trees with a travel bag over one shoulder, looking bored, irritated, and completely out of place in the Kyoto grove.
Daigo stared.
"Rude future doctor?"
Shoko looked at his ribs.
"Bruised future idiot"
Sakabe blinked.
"Ieiri?"
Shoko lifted a folded travel order.
"Kyoto medical observation rotation. I arrived early. Someone said Zenin review. That sounded like injury with paperwork"
Daigo looked almost emotional.
Then caught himself.
"Tokyo sends spies badly"
"Tokyo sends doctors tired"
Rei looked past her.
No Gojo.
No Geto.
Just Shoko.
That was somehow worse.
She pointed at Daigo.
"Sit"
He looked at Sakabe.
Sakabe said "Medical"
Daigo sat on a stone bench with deep resentment.
Shoko examined his ribs with brisk violence.
He hissed.
She said "Not fine"
"I said fine as strategy"
"Bad strategy"
"Kyoto strategy"
Rei said "No"
Daigo glared at him.
"Traitor"
Shoko wrapped his ribs.
Then looked at Rei.
"You look guilty"
Rei said "No"
"Bad lie"
"Kyoto lie"
"Still bad"
Sakabe made a sound that might have been a cough.
Shoko tied the wrap.
"Who stopped the review?"
Daigo said "Me"
Shoko looked at Rei.
He said "Daigo"
She looked back at Daigo.
"Good"
Daigo blinked.
"Medical good?"
"Common sense good"
"Rare category"
"For you, yes"
He smiled despite himself.
The review room after lunch felt different because Shoko sat in the corner and made everyone aware of their skeletons.
Oda entered, saw her, and paused.
Shoko looked up.
Oda looked down at Daigo’s wrap.
"Acceptable"
Shoko said "Your school produces idiots with decent injury vocabulary"
Oda sat.
"Tokyo produces doctors with insufficient respect for paperwork"
"Paperwork does not bruise"
"Wrong"
Shoko considered this.
"Fine"
Daigo whispered "I have never been happier"
Sakabe began the review before the room became an alliance.
"Daigo. What almost became wrong?"
Daigo answered faster than usual.
"Harumasa looked at Rei to make me prove Rei was not my leash by ignoring the floor call"
Sakabe nodded.
"Rei"
"Calling unsafe floor could have become command if Daigo used it to stop without deciding"
"Akiha?"
Akiha had not been present, but she had joined the review because friendship file apparently had gravity now.
"The Zenin elder attempted to convert peer observation into control evidence"
"Tomonari"
"Family review tried to make refusal appear as school overprotection"
"Hayato"
"Need made the request harder to refuse before the review began"
Everyone looked at him.
Hayato looked at the table.
"Friend need"
Good.
Painful.
Necessary.
Miyo said "Harumasa used gaze as route"
Oda wrote.
Shoko watched all of them.
Not amused now.
Sakabe said "Boundary update"
Oda slid a sheet forward.
Of course it already existed.
Friend Request Boundary — Addendum
Being chosen by a friend can bypass refusal because refusal begins to resemble abandonment.
Therefore:
A friend may say need.
Need must name function.
The asked person may pause before answering.
Pause is not rejection.
Refusal is not betrayal.
Acceptance does not create leash.
A floor-checker may call unsafe floor.
The person standing chooses whether to step.
A friend can help without becoming proof.
Daigo stared at the last line.
A friend can help without becoming proof.
He looked away.
Hayato pushed the cracker packet toward him again.
Daigo took one.
"Too salty"
Hayato said "Yes"
"Good"
Shoko looked at the crackers.
"Salt after rib bruise is not medicine"
Daigo froze.
"Is it forbidden?"
"No"
"Then why say it?"
"To make you nervous"
Daigo looked betrayed.
Oda wrote:
Ieiri Shoko:
medical harassment effective.
Shoko looked at the note.
"Send me a copy"
Oda nodded.
Everyone felt history shift slightly and decided not to interfere.
The System opened that night.
Rei was alone, but the room did not feel empty. Friendship had a way of leaving residue even when people left.
[Friend Request event processed]
Threat type:
friendship-mediated necessity
Initial vector:
Daigo Zenin requested Rei as peer observer for family review
Risk:
need bypassing refusal
acceptance becoming standing role
floor-checker becoming leash
friendship used as proof
refusal resembling abandonment
A second message appeared.
[Event outcome]
Function named:
floor-checker
Accepted under boundary:
one review only
no standing Zenin observer role
no responsibility for Daigo’s choices
no proof function
Field result:
unsafe floor called
Daigo chose refusal
Zenin attempt to convert peer observation into control evidence resisted
A third.
[New analytical principles registered]
Need is information.
Need is not command.
Pause is not rejection.
Refusal is not betrayal.
Acceptance does not create leash.
A friend can help without becoming proof.
The floor-checker does not become the floor.
Then:
[Extraction delay remains active]
No category function named.
No extraction issued.
Current progress:
friendship boundary / chosen-necessity resistance / non-leash support
Continue surviving consequence.
Rei wrote by hand.
Daigo asked.
I wanted to say yes before thinking.
That is a warning.
Friendship can be cleaner than duty and more dangerous because it feels chosen.
Need is information.
Need is not command.
A friend can help without becoming proof.
I can be wanted in a room without becoming the reason the room is safe.
Daigo chose.
I helped.
Those are different.
He stamped it.
Plain.
The mark held.
The letter to Tokyo was not addressed to room this time.
Rei wrote to Satoru first.
Satoru,Daigo added, under protest:Daigo asked me to attend a Zenin branch form review as floor-checker.
We made a boundary before answering.
Need is information.
Need is not command.
Pause is not rejection.
Refusal is not betrayal.
Acceptance does not create leash.
A friend can help without becoming proof.
Shoko appeared in Kyoto early and called him bruised future idiot.
Rei
Rude future doctor was medically useful.Akiha added:Do not tell her I said that.
Daigo
Friendship may bypass refusal more cleanly than duty.Hayato added:
Friend need requires room to pause.Miyo added:
Gaze can become route.Tomonari added:
Peer witness must not become control evidence.Oda added:
Shoko requested a copy of medical harassment effective.Satoru’s reply arrived two days later, folded around a candy wrapper.I approved.
Oda
Rei and room,Below, Geto had written:Friendship is a filthy route.
Obviously.
Daigo saying Shoko was medically useful has been copied for future extortion.
Shoko says he remains bruised future idiot.
Suguru says need is information not command is useful and uncomfortable.
I say if anyone tries to make me pause before answering, I will become worse.
The vow did not pull.
This is surrounding structure.
Satoru
Friendship may bypass refusal more cleanly than duty.Below that, Shoko:I did not like that.
Which means I will think about it.
Geto Suguru
Tell Daigo to breathe normally or the wrap is useless.Daigo tried to breathe normally out of spite and failed. Also tell Rei that looking guilty is not medical treatment.
Ieiri Shoko
Shoko won again.
Far away, the unknown reader received the Zenin branch review record, the Friend Request Boundary Addendum, and the Tokyo reply.
The gloved hand rested on:
Need is information.
Need is not command.
Then on:
A friend can help without becoming proof.
Then on Rei’s private line, copied from somewhere it should not have been.
Friendship can be cleaner than duty and more dangerous because it feels chosen.
The brush paused.
A longer pause than usual.
Then wrote:
Friendship route resisted.
Direct ask insufficient.
Need named.
Pause allowed.
Refusal preserved.
Another line.
Friendship effective but boundary forms quickly when time exists.
The reader opened a new sheet.
Remove time.
Do not let friend ask before danger.
Make choice arrive after harm begins.
A pause.
Then:
Target:
not Daigo.
He can resist pride when warned.
Use someone quieter.
Someone who will apologize for needing.
The sheet was folded.
In Kyoto, Daigo’s rib bruise turned purple.
He claimed it looked heroic.
Shoko’s note arrived by courier the next morning.
Purple is not heroism.Daigo declared her wrong.Breathe normally.
Ieiri Shoko
Then breathed normally.
Minimum good.
Enough to continue.
Not enough to trust.
