JJK: Behind The Strongest

After Harm Begins

Chapter 83

The problem with emergencies was that they did not respect good paperwork.

Kyoto tried anyway.

It trained students to name function before entry, to identify exits before pride, to separate usefulness from ownership, to write refusal routes before someone called refusal cowardice. It taught them that a mission resembling a student’s function did not summon that student, that a role could end, that a friend could ask without becoming command, that a floor-checker did not become the floor.

Then the world did what it always did.

It moved first.

The morning began badly because Daigo was breathing normally and resenting it.

He stood in the yard with one hand pressed to his wrapped ribs, glaring at nothing, while Shoko’s latest note lay folded on the bench beside him like a medical curse.

Purple remains not heroism.

Breathe normally.

If pain increases when twisting, stop twisting.

This is not philosophy.

Ieiri Shoko

Daigo had read the note five times and called it tyranny every time.

Hayato sat beside the bench, tying one of his gloves with careful fingers.

"She is right"

Daigo pointed at him.

"Do not ally with Tokyo medicine"

"It hurts when you twist"

"You do not know that"

"You make a face"

"I have many faces"

"That one means ribs"

Daigo looked betrayed.

Akiha, standing near the practice rack, said "It does"

Tomonari said "Distinctly"

Miyo said "Visible"

Daigo turned on her.

"Do not use visibility against me"

Miyo looked at his ribs.

"You are using pain badly"

"I am using pain heroically"

Rei said "Purple is not heroism"

Daigo’s outrage was immediate.

"She has infected you"

Rei folded the note and handed it back.

"Medical truth crosses school boundaries"

"Disgusting sentence"

"Accurate"

"Also disgusting"

The morning’s assigned training was civilian-handling under interference. Not a mission. Not field deployment. Just a controlled school exercise in the lower practice quarter, where old service buildings had been repurposed into mock shops, alleys, storage rooms, and evacuation lanes. First-years rotated through roles: civilian caller, panic anchor, route support, physical obstruction, observer.

Hayato was assigned lead for the first rotation.

That should have made it safe.

No.

That was the first lie.

Sakabe stood at the edge of the practice lane with a timing board. Moriyama watched from the shaded veranda. Oda was not visible, which meant nothing. Two second-years acted as civilians. Hara Issei was assigned tool support with consent, review, and an exit condition he had written himself. Mizuta Riko stood at the west boundary as shrine-adjacent observer, no peer label yet. Umehara Katsu had been assigned front pressure for the second rotation only and looked like he wanted to be annoyed but could not find a safe place to put it.

The exercise scenario was simple.

Too simple.

A low-level curse imitation would produce conflicting voices from two mock buildings. Students had to identify the real civilian route, avoid the false voice, and move three civilians to the safe lane without letting the sound lure split the team.

Hayato read the exercise sheet.

Then frowned.

Sakabe noticed.

"Problem?"

Hayato looked at the mock buildings.

"The false voice has no name listed"

Sakabe nodded.

"Correct"

"Then the exercise tests voice without name"

"Yes"

Hayato looked less satisfied.

"It may still become name-shaped"

Sakabe’s eyes sharpened.

"Explain"

"If the voice copies someone familiar from the listener, the sheet will not predict it"

Sakabe looked toward the talisman technician.

The technician shook his head.

"Standard voice lure. No personal imprint component"

Hayato nodded slowly.

"Then no objection"

Daigo whispered "He objected to a training sheet and somehow sounded polite"

Akiha said "Growth"

Daigo said "Terrifying growth"

Rei watched Hayato step into the lane.

He looked steady.

Not fearless.

Steady.

That had become his shape in public.

Civilian Movement Support.

Evacuation language.

Voice traps.

Can end.

Not phrase storage.

The exercise began.

The first false voice came from the east building.

"Help me"

Hayato did not turn.

He looked at the nearest civilian actor.

"Can you hear me?"

The second-year nodded.

"Good. Stand if you can. Point if you cannot"

The second voice came from the west.

An older man crying.

"Please, my daughter"

Hayato’s shoulders tightened.

He did not turn.

"Stay with my voice. Do not answer other voices yet"

Good.

The first civilian moved.

The second refused, clinging to a crate.

Hayato crouched, keeping his hands visible.

"You do not have to be calm. You have to move your feet"

The civilian actor hesitated.

Then stood.

Good.

The third civilian was hidden inside the west building, behind a screen.

Hayato approached the threshold and stopped before entering.

"Can you hear me?"

A knock answered.

Good.

Controlled.

The timing board reached two minutes.

Everything remained training.

Then the east building answered in Mina’s voice.

Not close.

Perfect.

Real.

Small.

"Hayato?"

The whole lane changed.

Hayato froze.

Rei felt the world narrow.

Daigo’s hand moved before his mind did.

Akiha’s face went white in one clean line.

Tomonari looked at the talisman technician.

The technician stared back in horror.

"That is not in the imitation"

The voice came again.

"Hayato, I cannot find the door"

Hayato’s breath broke.

Not loudly.

Enough.

Sakabe’s hand went to the stop talisman.

The lane did not stop.

The false voice talismans flickered, then burned white.

Miyo appeared at the west boundary.

"External route"

Moriyama was already moving.

The east building’s shadow folded inward.

Not a full curse.

Not Grade 2.

Not even strong.

Smart enough.

Prepared enough.

It had not attacked the exercise.

It had entered the training shape after the students trusted the boundary.

The voice spoke again.

"Hayato"

This time it sounded closer.

Hayato took one step east.

Rei said "Hayato"

Hayato stopped.

One breath.

Two.

Then another voice came from the west building.

The hidden civilian actor screamed.

Real fear.

The curse had split the room.

Mina’s voice east.

Actual student civilian west.

Hayato turned west.

Mina’s voice cried "Please"

Hayato’s face cracked.

The tale has been illicitly lifted; should you spot it on Amazon, report the violation.

He looked at Rei.

Not long enough for a boundary.

Not long enough for review.

Not long enough to name function properly.

"I am sorry" Hayato said

Then, quieter.

"I need you"

There it was.

No time.

Friend need after harm began.

The System did not open.

Good.

Bad.

No text could save this.

Rei moved.

Not toward Hayato first.

Toward the floor.

The practice lane had three safe markers, two false voice talisman anchors, one technician line, and now an external residue entering through the east building’s drainage crack. The curse had found the familiar voice route from somewhere, not from Hayato’s mind fully, but from residue attached to previous records. Mina had been used once before.

That made Rei’s blood go cold.

Not anger.

Not yet.

Anger later.

Function now.

"Akiha. Stop team split language"

Akiha moved immediately.

"Everyone stays in named pairs. No one answers east voice. West civilian real until disproven"

"Tomonari. Mark exercise invalid"

Tomonari was already writing.

Training exercise invalidated by external voice-route intrusion.

"Daigo. Threshold west. Do not enter until called"

Daigo snarled.

"East?"

"Not yet"

"Mina voice"

"Not Mina"

"I know"

His face said he did not know enough.

Still, he moved west.

"Miyo. East perimeter"

"Already"

"Sakabe. Stop talisman failed. Treat as field event"

Sakabe’s face was hard.

"Done"

Hayato stood in the center of the lane, shaking.

The voice called again.

"Hayato, I am scared"

He flinched.

Rei stepped into his line of sight.

"Look at my sleeve"

Hayato’s eyes snapped to him.

"Not my face. Sleeve"

Hayato stared at the dark fabric.

The voice sobbed.

"Please"

Rei said "Need is information. It worked. I am here. You are not commanding me"

Hayato’s mouth trembled.

"West civilian"

"Yes"

"Mina voice"

"Not Mina until body"

Hayato breathed in.

"Not Mina until body"

Good.

Akiha repeated it louder.

"Not Mina until body"

Tomonari wrote it.

Daigo said "Good ugly"

Miyo called from the east boundary "Voice route entering through drainage crack. No body. No child residue. Familiarity borrowed"

Hayato closed his eyes.

Only for half a second.

Then opened them.

"West first"

Rei nodded.

"West first"

The curse reacted to the decision by making Mina scream.

Hayato nearly broke.

Nearly.

Rei nearly used more.

Too much more.

The body template wanted to move. Cursed energy wanted to flood the lane. Barrier logic unfolded behind his ribs, showing him three possible seals, two of them too advanced for public use and one too slow. Soul perception brushed the voice route like a cold wire. Not a soul. Not Mina. A carried imprint. A stolen shape.

Power could solve some.

Power would also reveal too much.

Function.

Name function before draw.

No extraction.

No shame.

No panic.

Rei crouched and touched the lane marker.

Public route analysis.

Controlled excellence.

No false mediocrity.

"The voice route feeds on answer, not hearing. Do not answer east. Do not deny east. Denial is answer"

Akiha said "No answer east. West movement only"

Daigo reached the west threshold.

Inside, the hidden civilian actor, a second-year named Hoshida, was pressed against the wall while shadows from the east side of the lane crawled along the ceiling toward him. The curse had made the training buildings share a route through sound.

Daigo said "Call?"

Rei saw the shadow line.

If Daigo entered as Breaker, the room would give him things to break until he split from the civilian.

"Enter as body shield, not interruption"

Daigo grimaced.

"I hate that"

"Good"

Daigo entered.

He did not strike.

The restraint cost him.

Visible.

Hoshida grabbed his sleeve.

Daigo said "Do not climb me"

Hoshida looked terrified.

Daigo added through gritted teeth "But keep holding"

Good enough.

Hayato moved west, one step at a time.

The Mina voice cried behind him.

"Hayato, why are you leaving me?"

That one hurt everyone.

Hayato stopped.

His face twisted.

He whispered "I am sorry"

The east shadow brightened.

Rei said "Do not apologize to the voice"

Hayato shook.

"I know"

"Say it to the real person later if needed"

Hayato nodded once.

Then spoke toward the west building.

"Hoshida. Keep your hand on Daigo’s sleeve. Move when he moves. You do not need to understand the voice"

Hoshida breathed in.

Daigo said "Move"

They moved.

The east voice changed.

Not Mina now.

Hayato’s aunt.

Then a younger trainee.

Then Hayato himself, smaller.

"Do not leave me"

Hayato’s knees almost gave.

Rei put one hand on his shoulder.

Not to push.

Anchor.

"Need is information" Rei said

Hayato’s voice broke.

"Not command"

"Pause is not rejection"

"No time"

"Then we review after"

Hayato looked at him.

That line landed.

Emergency did not erase review.

It moved review after action.

Hayato nodded.

"After"

The shadow lashed west.

Daigo finally got permission without anyone saying it because the shadow crossed the civilian’s shoulder.

He struck.

Not the whole shadow.

The point where it became route.

Wood cracked. The false training wall shuddered. The shadow recoiled.

"Beautiful" Daigo said

Then hissed because his ribs hated joy.

Shoko would have appeared from nowhere to insult him if the universe were fair.

It was not.

Miyo’s voice cut from the east.

"Drainage crack anchor. Small curse body outside building. It is not inside voice"

Sakabe said "Can you reach?"

"Yes"

Moriyama said "Do not engage alone"

Miyo stopped.

Good.

That mattered.

Visibility by choice.

Watcher function with exit.

Sakabe looked at Rei.

"Route?"

Rei saw it now.

The curse had entered through the drainage crack, attached to the false voice talisman, and used familiar voice residue to split the response. If attacked east with high pressure, it would sever the borrowed voice and leave shadow residue in the west building. If ignored, it would deepen the familiar route and feed on Hayato’s apology.

They needed to remove the talisman’s authority from the voice without answering the voice.

"Tomonari. Blank exercise tag"

Tomonari threw one.

Rei caught it.

"Akiha. Phrase"

Akiha understood.

"No voice has authority without body"

Hayato repeated, louder than Rei expected.

"No voice has authority without body"

The Mina voice sobbed.

"Hayato"

Hayato flinched but did not answer.

Rei placed the blank tag over the burned false voice talisman at the lane center.

Not sealing.

Interrupting.

"Evidence of intrusion. Not caller"

Tomonari repeated "Evidence of intrusion. Not caller"

Akiha said "Evidence of intrusion. Not child"

Hayato closed his eyes.

"Evidence of intrusion. Not Mina"

The east building shrieked.

Miyo moved when Moriyama did.

Together.

Adult and student.

Not alone.

The drainage crack flashed with cursed energy as Moriyama pinned the outer route with a suppression talisman and Miyo marked the retreat line before it could slip into the gutter. Sakabe activated the secondary barrier from the training post. Daigo dragged Hoshida out of the west building, still refusing to strike the wrong thing. Hayato guided the first two civilians to the safe lane without looking east.

Rei held the blank tag in place while the talisman beneath it burned.

His fingers hurt.

Not enough to matter.

Enough for Shoko to call him stupid later if she learned.

The curse body tried to flee through the drainage crack.

Miyo called "Now"

Moriyama crushed the route.

Not dramatically.

Efficiently.

The familiar voices stopped all at once.

The silence afterward was worse.

Hayato stood in the safe lane with both hands clenched at his sides, breathing like he had run through water.

Daigo let go of Hoshida only after Hayato touched the second-year’s shoulder and said "Body outside. Voice stopped. You are here"

Hoshida nodded shakily.

Then started crying.

Real.

Not lure.

Hayato stayed with him.

Rei did not move for several seconds.

The blank tag had fused to the talisman.

Evidence of intrusion.

Not caller.

Not child.

Not Mina.

Sakabe came to his side.

"Hand"

Rei lifted it.

Burn across two fingers.

Minor.

Annoying.

Shoko would win from Tokyo.

Sakabe looked at it.

"Medical"

"I know"

"Say it less like a student"

Rei almost smiled.

"Finger burn. Needs treatment. Not severe. I will not hide it"

"Better"

Daigo called from the safe lane.

"Is everyone alive?"

Akiha said "Yes"

"Good. I am furious"

Hayato turned.

His face crumpled for one breath.

Then he walked to Rei.

Not quickly.

Carefully.

"I am sorry"

Rei said "Later"

Hayato stopped.

"I—"

"Later review"

Hayato’s eyes widened.

Then filled.

He nodded.

"Later"

Good.

If apology came now, the curse might be gone, but the route would stay.

Friend need required room to pause.

After harm began, pause had to be built afterward.

The review room filled before lunch.

No one ate first.

That was how everyone knew it had been bad.

Sakabe placed the invalidated exercise sheet on the table. Tomonari placed the intrusion note beside it. Miyo placed the drainage route sketch. Akiha placed the phrase sheet. Hayato placed nothing because his hands would not stop shaking if he tried, and Oda placed a blank sheet in front of him without asking him to write yet.

Daigo sat carefully because of his ribs and pretended he was not.

Rei’s fingers were wrapped.

Not well enough for Shoko.

Well enough for Kyoto.

Oda looked at the wrap and wrote:

Finger burn:

treated inadequately by Tokyo standards not present.

Daigo whispered "She haunts us"

Rei whispered back "Yes"

Sakabe began.

"Training exercise invalidated by external intrusion. Classification?"

Miyo said "Voice-route intrusion through drainage crack using false voice talisman as amplifier"

Tomonari said "Familiarity borrowed from previous Mina-route residue"

The room stilled.

Hayato looked down.

Rei said "Not from Hayato’s memory alone"

Hayato looked up.

Rei continued "The route existed before today. It was accessed"

Oda wrote slowly.

Familiarity borrowed.

Not proof of Hayato failure.

Hayato breathed.

Once.

Akiha said "The intrusion targeted apology"

Sakabe nodded.

"Explain"

Akiha looked at Hayato, then at the sheet.

"The voice made leaving sound like harm. It tried to make rescue require apologizing to the false voice. Apology would have answered the route"

Hayato whispered "I almost did"

Daigo said "Almost is not did"

Hayato looked at him.

Daigo looked away.

"Medical rule. Probably"

Oda wrote:

Almost is not did.

Sakabe said "Rei"

Rei looked at the invalidated exercise sheet.

"Friend need arrived after harm began. No time for pre-boundary. I acted"

"And risk?"

"Need could have become command because emergency made review impossible before acceptance"

Hayato flinched.

Rei continued before apology could fill the room.

"But emergency action is not proof that asking was wrong"

Hayato’s face changed.

Good.

"Emergency action requires after-review" Rei said "Not apology first. Review first"

Oda wrote.

Emergency does not erase review.

Emergency moves review after action.

Hayato’s hand covered his mouth.

Akiha looked at Rei.

Cost.

He nodded once.

Yes.

This one hurt.

Sakabe said "Hayato"

Hayato lowered his hand.

His voice came thin.

"I said I need you"

No one interrupted.

"I said sorry first"

Oda’s brush paused.

Hayato kept going.

"I thought needing him was already harm. Then I needed him anyway, and the voice made it sound like leaving Mina, and I almost answered it because apologizing felt like the only way not to be cruel"

Daigo looked at the table.

Tomonari closed his eyes briefly.

Miyo was very still.

Hayato said "I do not want my need to be a hook"

Rei answered before anyone else could make that sentence a shrine.

"Then we give it an exit"

Hayato looked at him.

Rei said "You needed help during danger. I helped. That need ended when danger ended. Review happens now. Apology can happen after review if still true"

Hayato’s eyes shook.

"Is it?"

Rei knew what he was asking.

Was apology still true?

Was need harm?

Was friendship debt?

Was Mina’s stolen voice his fault?

He wanted to answer all of it.

That was the danger.

"Some apology may be true" Rei said carefully "Not all of it belongs to you"

Hayato nodded slowly.

Akiha wrote something and turned it around.

Emergency Friend Need Boundary

When harm has already begun:

A friend may call need without pre-review.

The asked person may act under emergency function.

Emergency acceptance does not create standing command.

Need ends when the danger ends unless renewed under review.

Apology waits until after review.

A stolen familiar voice is not the fault of the person who recognized it.

Almost answering is not answering.

Rescue first.

Review after.

Debt not automatic.

Daigo stared at the last line.

"Debt not automatic"

Hayato whispered it.

"Debt not automatic"

Tomonari added:

Emergency action may be necessary.

Necessity does not become ownership after the fact.

Miyo added:

If time is removed, review must return later.

Oda stamped.

Hard.

Then wrote her own line.

Do not let a curse write friendship accounting.

Daigo made a sound.

"That is ugly beautiful"

Oda did not object.

Hayato stared at the paper.

Then at Rei.

"I am sorry for the parts that are mine"

Rei breathed.

"Accepted for the parts that are yours"

Hayato’s shoulders broke.

Not collapse.

Release.

Daigo pushed the salty crackers across the table with his good arm.

Hayato took one.

Cried once.

Laughed once.

Akiha looked away to give him privacy.

Miyo looked directly at the door to give everyone else warning not to enter.

Tomonari wrote nothing.

Sakabe let the room breathe.

That was adult good.

Temporary.

Enough.

The medical note from Tokyo arrived before anyone sent a letter.

This should have been impossible.

It was Shoko.

That explained enough.

I heard there was a finger burn.

If Mikage wrapped it like a legal argument, redo it.

If Daigo twisted while helping, he is an idiot.

If Hayato feels guilty, tell him guilt is not triage.

This is medical and only slightly philosophical.

Ieiri Shoko

Daigo looked at the note.

"She knows too much"

Akiha said "Yes"

Hayato touched the line.

"Guilt is not triage"

Rei looked at it.

Shoko had not been there.

Still useful.

Annoying.

The System opened that night.

Rei was in the dormitory, fingers properly rewrapped after Oda decided Shoko’s distant harassment counted as medical supervision.

[Emergency Friend Need event processed]

Threat type:

time-removal / friendship-mediated emergency necessity

Target vector:

Hayato Inoue

familiar voice route using Mina-associated residue

Initial conditions:

training exercise invalidated after harm began

pre-boundary impossible

friend need call occurred under active danger

Risk:

need becoming command

apology becoming debt

emergency acceptance becoming standing role

stolen familiar voice being misassigned as personal failure

A second message appeared.

[Event outcome]

Emergency function accepted:

route identification / voice authority interruption / friend anchor

Key actions:

- Mina voice classified as no body / no child residue

- west civilian prioritized

- blank tag used on false voice talisman

- voice route named evidence of intrusion, not caller

- Hayato need reviewed after danger

- apology delayed until after review

A third.

[New analytical principles registered]

Emergency does not erase review.

Emergency moves review after action.

If time is removed, review must return later.

A stolen familiar voice is not the fault of the person who recognized it.

Guilt is not triage.

Rescue first.

Review after.

Debt not automatic.

Do not let a curse write friendship accounting.

Then:

[Extraction delay remains active]

Function named under emergency:

route identification / voice authority interruption / friend anchor

No extraction issued.

Reason:

available current capabilities sufficient.

Warning:

future events may attempt emergency pressure with higher stakes.

Current progress:

emergency friendship boundary / time-removal response / guilt-debt separation

Continue surviving consequence.

Rei read the warning twice.

Future events may attempt emergency pressure with higher stakes.

Of course.

The world learned.

So did enemies.

So did curses.

So did whatever had chosen Mina’s voice.

He wrote by hand:

Hayato needed me after harm began.

No time for review before.

So review returned after.

Emergency does not erase review.

Emergency moves review after action.

Need ended.

Friendship remained.

Guilt is not triage.

Debt not automatic.

Mina voice had no body.

Not Mina.

Not Hayato’s fault.

I wanted to answer everything for him.

That is also a warning.

He stamped it.

Plain.

The mark held.

The letter to Tokyo went out at dawn.

This one was addressed to Satoru, Shoko, Geto, and room.

Rei wrote:

Training exercise was breached by external voice-route intrusion.

Familiar voice borrowed Mina-associated residue and targeted Hayato.

No body.

No child residue.

Not Mina.

Hayato called need after harm began.

No time for pre-review.

Emergency does not erase review.

Emergency moves review after action.

Rescue first.

Review after.

Debt not automatic.

Rei

Hayato added:

Guilt is not triage.

Thank you, Ieiri-san.

Daigo added:

I did not twist.

Much.

Akiha added:

A stolen familiar voice is not the fault of the person who recognized it.

Tomonari added:

If time is removed, review must return later.

Miyo added:

Voice route entered through drainage crack. Familiarity borrowed. Watch training talismans.

Oda added:

Do not let a curse write friendship accounting.

Also the finger wrap was redone.

Oda

Satoru’s reply came faster than normal.

Too fast.

The first page was his.

Rei and room,

I hate this one.

Not funny hate.

Real hate.

Mina-associated residue means someone touched an old route or copied its shape.

Find how.

Do not do it alone.

The vow did not pull.

This is surrounding structure.

Satoru

No joke.

The room went quiet when Rei read it.

The second page was Geto’s.

Guilt is not triage.

I needed that.

I wish I did not.

Geto Suguru

The third was Shoko’s.

Hayato,

You did not harm anyone by needing help during an active incident.

If guilt helped triage, hospitals would be temples.

They are not.

Drink water.

Breathe.

Sleep if possible.

Ieiri Shoko

Mikage,

Do not burn your fingers to prove a point.

If you say it was not to prove a point, improve your wrapping anyway.

Hayato cried when he read it.

Quietly.

Daigo announced he was going to respect Shoko only under protest.

Akiha said protest accepted.

Oda wrote a medical respect file.

Daigo tried to object.

Failed.

Far away, the unknown reader received the training breach report, the Emergency Friend Need Boundary, and Satoru’s reply.

The gloved hand rested on:

Emergency does not erase review.

Emergency moves review after action.

Then on:

future events may attempt emergency pressure with higher stakes.

Then on Satoru’s line:

I hate this one.

Not funny hate.

Real hate.

The brush paused.

Then wrote:

Time removal resisted.

Emergency review restored.

Target guilt reduced.

Friendship accounting blocked.

Another line.

Mina route still sensitive.

Gojo reacted seriously.

Tokyo attention increased.

The reader opened a new sheet.

For a long time, nothing moved.

Then:

Higher stakes later.

For now:

trace how old route was accessed.

Let them investigate source.

Investigation creates path.

A pause.

Then:

They will look for who borrowed the voice.

Good.

The sheet was folded.

In Kyoto, Hayato slept in the common room that night because no one said he had to and everyone made space without making space into a ceremony.

Daigo slept badly on the floor beside the table and claimed it was because of his ribs.

Akiha did not correct him.

Miyo watched the corridor visibly.

Tomonari left water within reach.

Rei sat by the window until moonlight shifted off the floor.

The floor had been unsafe again.

They had checked it.

Not before.

After.

This time, after had been enough.

Minimum good.

Enough to continue.

Not enough to trust.
