JJK: Behind The Strongest

The Labels Students Wanted

Chapter 81

The first sign of trouble was that no one asked Rei for help.

That was new enough to be suspicious.

No first-year approached him after the textile district mission with a field file, a route map, a curse behavior question, a storage label, a corridor diagram, or a polite request that had already started becoming a hook. No instructor placed a report on his desk. No mission board changed in a way that resembled his function. No adult failed safely and then looked in his direction as if safety had become permission.

For three days, Kyoto behaved.

Daigo hated it.

"This is fake"

Akiha turned a page in her communication primer.

"What is fake?"

"Peace"

Tomonari did not look up from his route procedure notes.

"This is not peace. This is scheduling"

"Same smell"

Hayato sat near the open window, mending the edge of one of his practice gloves because Shoko’s influence had spread so far that even bad wrist support now felt morally embarrassing.

"Peace usually has less homework"

Daigo pointed at him.

"Exactly. Fake"

Miyo stood in the courtyard below, visible because visibility practice did not care whether the weather was pleasant. Three second-years walked past her, glanced, looked away, glanced again, and became increasingly uncomfortable because Miyo did not disappear to help them feel competent.

Rei watched from the classroom window.

A school could be home and machine.

A quiet machine was still a machine.

The second sign of trouble came at lunch.

Hara Issei placed a folded paper on the table, sat down near enough to be heard and not close enough to be presumed included, and said "This is probably unsafe"

Daigo looked delighted.

"Excellent beginning"

Hara pushed the paper forward.

"I did not make it"

Akiha’s eyes narrowed.

"That usually means you know who did"

"I know who had it"

"Different"

"Yes"

Rei unfolded the paper.

It was not official.

That was obvious before reading.

Official Kyoto documents were arrogant in particular ways. They loved margins, seals, route references, and phrasing that made accountability look like architecture. This was student handwriting copied too quickly from several hands, with nicknames written beside first-year names.

At the top:

First-Year Useful Roles

Daigo leaned in.

"Oh no"

Akiha said "Do not sound entertained"

"I am horrified with enthusiasm"

Rei read the list.

Mikage Rei — Route Brain

Suda Akiha — Room Knife

Zenin Daigo — Breaker

Kamo Tomonari — Form Judge

Miyo — Watcher

Inoue Hayato — Voice Handler

Hara Issei — Tool Case

Mizuta Riko — Shrine Girl

Umehara Katsu — Frontline

The table went still.

Not because the labels were all wrong.

Because some were close enough to be worse.

Hayato’s hand closed around the edge of his glove.

"Voice Handler"

Daigo’s expression darkened.

"Tool Case?"

Hara looked down.

"That one is mine"

Akiha looked at him.

"You wrote that?"

"No. I said it first"

"Why?"

His fingers tightened on his lunch cloth.

"Because people kept asking what my technique does and I said mostly I carry tools. Then they laughed less when I said it first"

Daigo’s face changed.

The fun left it.

Tomonari took the paper.

"Form Judge"

Akiha said "Room Knife"

Miyo appeared behind Hara.

He did not jump.

Much.

"Watcher" she said

Daigo looked up.

"You were in the courtyard"

"Yes"

"And now?"

"Here"

"Visibility training is becoming unsettling"

Miyo looked at the list.

"Watcher is lazy"

Akiha said "All of them are lazy"

Rei looked at his own.

Route Brain.

He disliked it less than he should have.

That was the first personal danger.

A nickname could feel like recognition before it became reduction.

Hara said "They are making more"

Akiha looked at him.

"They?"

"Umehara and some second-years. Not only him. He is loudest"

Daigo muttered "Naturally"

Hara continued "People are asking for roles because the boards feel too official. They say the useful roles are honest"

Hayato said "Honest can still hurt"

Hara nodded quickly.

"I know. That is why I brought it"

Akiha asked "To Rei?"

Hara opened his mouth.

Stopped.

Good.

Then said "To the table"

Daigo pointed at him.

"Good save"

Hara looked miserable.

"It was not a save. It was correction"

Tomonari said "That is better"

Rei folded the paper.

No one had asked him for help.

They had asked to be classified by each other instead.

That was worse.

The third sign came after afternoon fundamentals.

Students had gathered near the west training yard, not in a formal circle because formal circles could be interrupted by instructors, but in a loose cluster that pretended to be casual while centering a sheet of paper on an equipment crate.

Umehara Katsu stood beside it, arms crossed, shoulders squared, chin lifted in the precise posture of a boy trying to make uncertainty look like command.

Mizuta Riko stood near him, not fully with him. Two provincial cousins stood behind her. Three second-years watched from the veranda with interest too old for the stakes.

Rei stopped under the covered walkway.

Akiha stopped beside him.

Daigo smiled without humor.

"There"

Tomonari said "Do we interrupt?"

Akiha watched the shape of the cluster.

"If we interrupt too early, it becomes us stopping their names"

Hayato said "If we wait too long?"

"Names become handles"

Miyo said "Katsu wants someone to challenge him"

Daigo cracked his knuckles.

"I volunteer"

"No" Akiha and Rei said together

Daigo looked offended.

"That was beautiful synchronization and also betrayal"

Rei looked at the equipment crate.

"This is not a fight"

Daigo followed his gaze.

"Peer room"

Tomonari looked tired.

"Of course those exist"

They approached together.

Not as a wall.

As a shape that knew walls could become accusations.

Katsu saw them and smiled.

Too fast.

Love this novel? Read it on NovelFire to ensure the author gets credit.

"Mikage"

There it was.

Rei said nothing.

Akiha looked at the paper on the crate.

"First-Year Useful Roles?"

Katsu’s smile widened.

"You saw the old copy. This one is cleaner"

Daigo said "Cleaner is rarely better"

Katsu ignored him.

"It is not official. That is the point. The boards tell adults what they want us to be. This tells us what people actually do"

Some students nodded.

That mattered.

Riko looked uncertain but not opposed.

Hara stood at the edge of the cluster, as if he had brought the warning and then found himself still written inside it.

Akiha asked "Who decides?"

Katsu shrugged.

"Everyone"

Tomonari said "Everyone rarely writes"

Katsu’s eyes narrowed.

"People can object"

Hayato looked at the sheet.

"Can they?"

Katsu turned to him.

"Yes"

Hayato’s voice stayed quiet.

"Then why is Hara still Tool Case?"

Hara went rigid.

Katsu looked annoyed.

"He called himself that"

Akiha said "People often name themselves with the insult closest to the door so others have less room to throw it"

The cluster shifted.

That sentence landed in places people did not want touched.

Katsu said "That is dramatic"

Daigo smiled.

"No. Dramatic would be me throwing you through the equipment crate"

Sakabe’s voice came from the veranda.

"Zenin"

Daigo did not look away from Katsu.

"Not doing it"

"Good"

Katsu’s ears reddened.

"This is exactly the problem. You all have roles everyone respects. Breaker. Room Knife. Route Brain. Watcher. Voice Handler. Even Form Judge sounds irritatingly important"

Tomonari said "Thank you?"

Katsu pointed at the group.

"People know what you are. They know what to expect from you. The rest of us stand around waiting for instructors to decide if we matter"

That was the hook.

Not cruelty.

Fear.

Worse.

Rei watched the faces around Katsu.

Hara, ashamed of wanting to be more than Tool Case and afraid of losing even that.

Riko, annoyed by Shrine Girl but unsure what she wanted instead.

The provincial cousins, hungry for words that made them more than cousins.

The second-years, amused because they had survived this hunger badly and now wanted to see who else would.

Katsu, angry because Frontline sounded good until everyone expected him to be hit first.

A school did not need to impose classification if students begged each other for it.

Rei finally spoke.

"What do you want the list to do?"

Katsu looked at him.

"What?"

"The list. What function?"

"Say what people are useful for"

"Why?"

"So people know"

"Know what?"

Katsu’s jaw tightened.

"Where to stand"

The words moved through the yard.

People checking where Rei stands.

It may mean the floor has been unsafe before.

Rei looked at the list again.

"No"

Katsu stepped forward.

"You do not get to decide that"

"Correct"

That stopped him.

Rei continued "I do not get to decide where people stand. The list does not either"

Katsu scoffed.

"Easy to say when everyone checks where you are"

Daigo moved.

Akiha caught his sleeve.

Not hard.

Enough.

Rei felt the sentence hit its mark because it was not entirely false.

That made it useful to the room.

He said "They do not check because I am center"

Katsu laughed.

"Then why?"

Hayato answered.

"Because the floor has been unsafe before"

Silence.

Not dramatic.

Real.

Several students looked away.

Hara looked at Hayato as if he had just named something too close to his ribs.

Katsu’s expression faltered.

Then hardened again because embarrassment often wore anger when it had no better clothes.

"That does not help anyone else"

Akiha said "It might"

"How?"

She stepped closer to the crate.

"By not turning survival habits into status labels"

Riko spoke for the first time.

"What if someone wants a label?"

Everyone turned to her.

She looked uncomfortable but did not retreat.

"What if having something is better than being nothing on the board?"

Hara whispered "Yes"

The word was small.

Enough.

Akiha looked at Rei.

Not to hand him the answer.

To check the floor.

Rei said "Then label must stay removable"

Tomonari’s expression changed.

He understood.

Katsu said "What does that mean?"

Tomonari answered "A function named for a field or training exercise can end when the function ends"

Hayato said "A label someone uses to survive a moment cannot become what everyone calls them"

Miyo said "A role can be visible without becoming a leash"

Daigo said "And ugly labels need consent before they become jokes"

Everyone looked at him.

He scowled.

"What?"

Akiha smiled faintly.

"Growth"

"Do not"

Katsu looked from one to the other.

"So what? We ask permission before writing anything?"

Sakabe, still on the veranda, said "That would be a start"

The cluster startled.

She walked down the steps with Moriyama beside her.

Oda was not visible.

This convinced no one.

Sakabe stopped near the crate.

"I was wondering when this would happen"

Daigo said "You knew?"

"I expected"

"That is worse"

"Often"

Moriyama looked at the list.

"Useful Roles"

Katsu’s face tightened, but he did not step back.

"Unofficial"

Moriyama said "Unofficial harm is efficient because everyone pretends no one authorized it"

The second-years on the veranda suddenly became very interested in not being noticed.

Too late.

Moriyama looked at them.

"Leave or join the review"

They left.

Fast.

Daigo whispered "Cowards"

Sakabe tapped the paper.

"Who wants a role?"

No one moved.

Then Riko raised her hand halfway.

Hara raised his slower.

One cousin did.

Then another.

Katsu did not.

That meant he did.

Sakabe nodded.

"Good. Wanting a role is not automatically wrong"

Katsu blinked.

Rei did too.

Sakabe continued "Roles can help in fieldwork. They can give nervous students a place to begin. They can prevent everyone from trying to be Gojo Satoru and dying of stupidity"

Daigo whispered "Tokyo catching strays"

Moriyama said "Do not interrupt"

Sakabe said "But a role without exit becomes a handle. A role without consent becomes a hook. A role used everywhere becomes lazy thinking"

Akiha said "Then we need a structure"

Sakabe looked at her.

"Yes"

Katsu looked frustrated.

"So now adults take it"

Moriyama said "No"

Sakabe handed him the brush.

"You started a peer room. Finish it correctly"

Katsu stared at the brush.

"What?"

"Name the problem you were trying to solve"

His throat moved.

The yard waited.

He hated the waiting.

Then said "People want to know where they fit"

Sakabe nodded.

"Write that"

Katsu looked at the paper.

His handwriting was heavy.

Problem:

students want to know where they fit

Sakabe said "Name the risk"

He looked at Rei.

Then away.

"Labels can become traps"

"Write it"

Risk:

labels can become traps

Tomonari said "Too broad"

Katsu glared.

Tomonari did not move.

"Specificity protects"

Katsu looked like he wanted to argue.

Instead, after a long breath, he added:

Risk:

labels can become traps if people cannot refuse, change, or end them

Hayato said "Better"

Katsu looked at him, then at Hara.

The next words came harder.

"Tool Case was bad"

Hara went still.

Katsu looked down.

"I thought it was fine because you said it first"

Hara’s fingers tightened.

"I said it first because I did not want anyone else to"

"Yes"

Katsu wrote.

Rule:

self-insult does not become public label without later consent

Daigo looked almost proud and hated every second of it.

Riko stepped forward.

"I do not want Shrine Girl"

Katsu nodded.

"What do you want?"

She looked startled by the question.

"I do not know"

Akiha said "Then no label yet"

Riko frowned.

"But then I am blank"

Rei said "Blank does not mean available"

She looked at him.

The line was known now.

Maybe too known.

But this time it worked.

Riko breathed out.

"No label yet"

Katsu wrote it.

Mizuta Riko:

no peer label yet

Hara looked at the list.

"Can I be Tool Support?"

Daigo made a face.

"Better than Tool Case but still sounds like furniture"

Hara gave a small, nervous smile.

"I do support with tools"

Tomonari said "Function acceptable if removable"

Hara nodded.

"Tool Support for training only?"

Sakabe asked "Field?"

Hara thought.

"Field if assigned and if I say yes for that field"

Akiha said "Good"

Katsu wrote.

Hara Issei:

Tool Support

Use:

training or named field function only

Can refuse.

Can change.

Katsu stared at his own name.

Frontline.

His hand hovered.

Daigo watched him.

Not kindly.

Not unkindly.

Katsu crossed out Frontline.

The mark was ugly.

Good.

He wrote:

Umehara Katsu:

No fixed label yet

Possible training function:

front pressure

Restriction:

not proof of worth

not first-hit obligation

Daigo nodded once.

"Better"

Katsu looked embarrassed by how much that mattered.

Then he looked at the old labels for Rei’s cohort.

"Do yours change?"

Akiha took the brush first.

She crossed out Room Knife.

Daigo looked wounded.

"But it was good"

"It was sharp" she said "That is not the same"

She wrote:

Suda Akiha:

Communication Correction

Use:

briefings / room pressure / social route review

Can end.

Not stabilizing decoration.

Tomonari crossed out Form Judge.

Kamo Tomonari:

Formal Route Review

Use:

documents / procedure / ledger traps

Can end.

Not family availability.

Miyo crossed out Watcher so hard the paper nearly tore.

Miyo:

Route Watch

Use:

perimeter / observer routes / external movement

Can end.

Visibility by choice.

Hayato looked at Voice Handler for a long time.

Then crossed it out.

His hand shook once.

Inoue Hayato:

Civilian Movement Support

Use:

evacuation / panic language / voice traps

Can end.

Not phrase storage.

Daigo crossed out Breaker.

Then looked mournful.

"It was beautiful"

Akiha said "Ugly beautiful"

"Exactly"

He sighed dramatically and wrote:

Zenin Daigo:

Physical Interruption

Use:

objects / pressure points / hostile room breaks

Can end.

Not family weapon.

Not emotional permission to smash everything.

He paused.

Then added:

Unfortunately.

Sakabe looked at the last word.

"Remove"

"No"

"Zenin"

"It is emotionally accurate"

Moriyama said "Leave it"

Daigo looked blessed.

Then everyone looked at Rei.

Of course.

The peer room had tried not to center him.

Still, the shape returned.

Route Brain sat beside his name.

Not entirely wrong.

Not acceptable.

Rei took the brush.

He crossed it out.

For a moment, he did not write.

Cost?

Being seen.

Being named.

Wanting something accurate enough to hold but not enough to own.

He wrote:

Mikage Rei:

Route Analysis

Use:

residual routes / role-assignment risks / barrier-adjacent field reading

Can end.

Not group center.

Not answer by resemblance.

Hayato said "Add floor?"

Rei looked at him.

Hayato held his gaze.

Rei added:

People may check the floor without making me the floor.

Daigo stared.

"That is very weird"

Miyo said "Good weird"

Tomonari nodded.

"Necessary weird"

Akiha said "Ugly weird"

Oda’s voice came from behind the equipment shed.

"Accepted"

Everyone flinched except Miyo.

Daigo pointed.

"I knew it!"

Oda stepped into view holding a clipboard she absolutely had not had at the beginning.

Sakabe looked unsurprised.

Moriyama looked faintly annoyed, which was affection in her dialect.

Oda took the sheet from the crate and read it.

"Peer Function Sheet"

Katsu said "It was not official"

Oda looked at him.

"Now it is not official correctly"

He had no idea what that meant.

Rei unfortunately did.

Oda wrote across the top:

Peer Function Sheet

Status:

training reference only

Not classification.

Not grade.

Not identity.

Not standing assignment.

Consent required.

Exit required.

Review required.

Then she stamped it with a small red seal that said temporary.

Hara looked relieved.

Riko looked like not having a label had become a label she could survive.

Katsu looked exhausted.

Good.

Peer pressure had not vanished.

It had been given an exit.

That was not victory.

It was minimum good.

The System opened that evening while Rei sat on the dormitory steps, watching students cross the courtyard with dinner trays, training bags, and the careful new awkwardness of people who had almost hurt each other and then been made to write rules about it.

[Peer Classification event processed]

Threat type:

peer-driven classification desire

Initial vector:

unofficial useful-role labels

Cause:

students seeking fit / status / safety outside official boards

Risk:

self-insult stabilization

role-to-identity conversion

group centrality route

classification envy

peer ownership without adult authorization

A second message appeared.

[Resolution]

Peer Function Sheet created.

Status:

training reference only

Core protections:

consent required

exit required

review required

role can end

blank does not mean available

self-insult does not become public label without later consent

people may check the floor without making Rei the floor

A third.

[New analytical principles registered]

Students may desire handles because uncertainty feels like disappearance.

A chosen role can help.

A fixed label can own.

Peer recognition can reduce fear or create cages.

Self-insult is not consent forever.

A function sheet must have an exit or it becomes a leash.

Then:

[Extraction delay remains active]

No category function named.

No extraction issued.

Current progress:

peer classification boundary / non-centrality reinforcement / removable-role structure

Continue surviving consequence.

Rei wrote by hand:

No mission today.

Still dangerous.

People can want labels.

Wanting a label is not weakness.

Giving one without exit is harm.

I wanted Route Brain less than I disliked it.

That is a warning.

Route Analysis can end.

I can end.

Not group center.

Not floor.

Maybe friend.

Still dangerous word.

Still true.

He stamped it.

Plain.

The mark held.

A letter from Tokyo arrived the next day because Satoru’s routes had become less postal and more supernatural with age.

Rei and room,

Tokyo created combat rankings.

I am first.

Obviously.

Suguru says rankings can motivate improvement.

Shoko says rankings motivate idiots to bleed near her.

I say both are true and funny.

How is Kyoto?

Satoru

Rei read it at breakfast.

Daigo grinned.

"Tell him Tokyo is spiritually inferior"

Akiha said "Tell him rankings are peer handles with violence attached"

Tomonari said "That is accurate"

Hayato said "Too broad?"

Miyo said "No"

Rei wrote:

Kyoto created unofficial useful-role labels.

We corrected them into a temporary Peer Function Sheet.

Consent required.

Exit required.

Review required.

Self-insult is not consent forever.

A function sheet must have an exit or it becomes a leash.

Rei

Daigo added:

Rankings are peer handles with violence attached.

Also I would rank you annoying first.

Akiha added:

Tell Geto that motivating improvement is not wrong.

Making comparison the only door to improvement is wrong.

Hayato added:

Tell Shoko she is correct about bleeding idiots.

Miyo added:

Combat rankings create watcher routes.

Tomonari added:

If Tokyo insists on rankings, at least separate field function from personal worth.

Oda added:

Bannai should be ashamed if students invented ranking rules before adults wrote exit conditions.

Oda

Satoru’s reply came fast.

Rei and room,

Bannai was ashamed.

Excellent.

Suguru is thinking.

Dangerous.

Shoko says bleeding idiots remain undefeated.

I remain first in annoying.

Daigo may challenge but will lose.

The vow did not pull.

This is surrounding structure.

Satoru

At the bottom, Geto had written:

Making comparison the only door to improvement is wrong.

I think I needed that more than I wanted to.

Geto Suguru

Shoko had added:

Peer handles with violence attached is exactly what combat rankings are.

I hate Kyoto sometimes.

Ieiri Shoko

Daigo declared that Shoko’s hatred was respect.

No one corrected him.

Far away, the unknown reader received the Peer Function Sheet through a student copy because students believed temporary paper was less dangerous if folded into a pocket.

The gloved hand rested on:

Not classification.

Not grade.

Not identity.

Not standing assignment.

Consent required.

Exit required.

Review required.

Then on:

Students may desire handles because uncertainty feels like disappearance.

Then on:

I wanted Route Brain less than I disliked it.

That is a warning.

The brush paused.

Longer than usual.

Then wrote:

Peer pressure resisted.

Classification desire named.

Exit conditions created.

Rei recognized desire for accurate label.

A second line.

Need not enough.

Resemblance not enough.

Usefulness not enough.

Peer desire not enough.

The reader opened a new sheet.

Next pressure must bypass refusal.

Not assign him.

Not ask him.

Not label him.

Make someone else choose him as necessary.

A pause.

Then:

Use friendship.

The sheet was folded.

In Kyoto, the Peer Function Sheet hung beside the official board under a temporary red stamp.

Students stopped to read it.

Some looked disappointed.

Some looked relieved.

Some looked angry because exits made labels less powerful.

That was fine.

A role that lost power when allowed to end had probably wanted too much.

Rei walked past the board after evening training and saw Hara Issei standing before his line.

Tool Support.

Can refuse.

Can change.

Hara touched the words without quite touching them.

Then stepped away.

Not erased.

Not owned.

Minimum good.

Enough to continue.

Not enough to trust.
