JJK: Behind The Strongest

The Mission That Looked Like Him

Chapter 80

The textile district did not summon Rei.

That was the point.

The mission board changed before breakfast.

Not loudly. Kyoto boards rarely did anything loudly unless someone had been foolish enough to attach a bell. The black-circled notice from the previous day had acquired a new strip beneath it, written in Sakabe’s hand and stamped with Moriyama’s field mark.

Western Kyoto Textile District

Adult first-response completed.

Status:

failed safely

Student assignment:

not yet authorized

Review at second bell.

Daigo stood in front of the board with a rice ball in one hand and suspicion in every visible part of his body.

"Failed safely"

Tomonari adjusted his sleeve.

"That means the adult team encountered failure without catastrophic consequence"

"I know what it means"

"Then why repeat it?"

"Because it sounds like paperwork congratulating itself for not dying"

Akiha read the strip again.

"Adult first-response completed. Student assignment not yet authorized"

Hayato stood slightly behind her.

"That line is doing work"

Rei said "Yes"

Miyo appeared beside the board.

No one jumped.

That was either progress or damage.

"Where?"

Rei looked at her.

"Outside route?"

She nodded once.

"Storage district has too many entries"

Daigo swallowed the last of his rice ball.

"Textile stores always do. Front door, back door, delivery door, old door, door no one admits exists, door everyone says is locked"

Akiha looked at him.

"You know a suspicious amount about textile stores"

"Zenin branches ruin many shopping trips"

Tomonari said "That explains several things"

"It explains nothing you are allowed to enjoy"

Sakabe arrived before the argument could mature.

"Review room"

Daigo pointed at the board.

"Not assignment?"

"Review"

"That was not an answer"

"It was the only answer you currently have clearance for"

Daigo looked almost pleased.

"Honest obstruction"

"Move"

They moved.

The review room was not the archive.

That mattered.

It had desks arranged in a square, a field map hung against the wall, and a mission file placed in the center beneath a clear weight. No old papers. No personal records. No names from historical harm. No cords. No missing child fragments.

Just a low-grade curse cluster in a textile district.

Just a missing cursed object tag.

Just rooms that rearranged themselves when people thought they understood the labels.

That should have made it simple.

It did not.

Sakabe stood at the front. Moriyama leaned near the window. Oda sat in the back corner despite absolutely no one having invited her. Hara Issei and Mizuta Riko were present as observers. Umehara Katsu stood by the wall, arms crossed, trying very hard to look like he was not interested.

The cohort sat together, but not too tightly.

Sakabe tapped the file.

"First response team entered at dawn"

Daigo said "Adults?"

"Two Grade 3 supervisors, one Grade 2 storage ward specialist, one district liaison"

"Adult enough"

Sakabe looked at him.

"Yes"

Tomonari asked "Definition of failed safely?"

Sakabe opened the first sheet.

"Team identified three curse clusters, two false route loops, and one active ledger distortion. They withdrew after the ward specialist entered Storage House Four and exited through Storage House Two with no memory of crossing the street"

Hara made a small sound.

Daigo grinned.

"Textile ghosts are rude"

Sakabe continued "No civilians injured during adult response. One adult suffered minor disorientation. One shelf collapse prevented. Missing cursed object tag not recovered. Curse cluster remains low-grade but route errors increased after withdrawal"

Akiha said "Failure changed the field"

"Yes"

Rei looked at the map.

Western Kyoto textile district. Narrow streets. Storage houses. Workshop fronts. Dye vats. Loom rooms. Covered delivery passages between buildings. Ledger office at the rear of the main warehouse. Old drainage lane beneath the dye house. Shrine alcove in the courtyard because Kyoto liked putting gods where invoices could see them.

The cursed object tag had gone missing from a restricted shelf in Storage House Three. Not the cursed object itself. The tag.

That was worse.

Tags existed to tell people what things were allowed to be.

A missing tag did not remove danger.

It removed agreement about where danger belonged.

Sakabe placed the adult team’s route reconstruction on the board.

Adult Response Summary

Entry:

Main warehouse front

Observed:

inventory records reorder when read aloud

storage labels shift after room entry

workers report entering correct storage and exiting wrong building

minor curse manifestations attached to cloth bolts and shelf tags

Failure point:

Storage House Four / Storage House Two displacement

Key adult finding:

rooms are not physically moving

roles assigned inside rooms are changing

Example:

ward specialist entered as “specialist”

ledger recorded him as “inventory assistant”

exited through route assigned to inventory assistant

Daigo stared.

"It demoted him into a different exit?"

Sakabe said "In field terms, yes"

Tomonari’s expression sharpened.

"Roles assigned inside rooms are changing"

Akiha looked toward Rei.

Then stopped herself before the look became a summons.

Good.

Sakabe noticed.

Better.

"That is why this is review before assignment" she said "This mission resembles several of your functions. It does not summon you"

Oda wrote something.

Daigo leaned back to read it.

She tilted the paper away.

He looked wounded.

Rei kept his eyes on the board.

The mission looked like him.

Residual route analysis.

Labels.

Role assignment.

Rooms changing exits according to function.

A missing tag.

Expectation leak with architecture.

The field wanted someone like him.

That did not mean it got him.

Not automatically.

Moriyama spoke.

"Adult second response options?"

Sakabe answered "One. Adult-only route team attempts tag recovery after deeper ledger mapping. Risk: role displacement worsens. Two. Seal district and wait for cluster to consolidate. Risk: workers cannot access stored goods, curse may attach to household inventories. Three. Student observation support under adult lead, limited entry, function named before entry"

Umehara Katsu said "Why use students if adults can go again?"

Every head turned.

He flushed but did not back down.

Good.

Sakabe looked at him.

"Because adults failed safely, not successfully. The next adult-only attempt has higher displacement risk because the field has now observed ward specialist function. Student involvement is not mandatory. It is an option because the field behavior intersects current training and may be safer with low-output route reading and civilian handling"

Katsu’s jaw tightened.

"So Mikage"

Akiha said "No"

The room went still.

Katsu looked at her.

"What?"

Akiha’s voice stayed mild.

"You said a person where the answer requires a function"

Sakabe nodded.

"Correct"

Katsu looked irritated.

"Fine. Low-output route reading"

Tomonari said "And role-assignment detection"

Hayato said "And worker instruction that does not make people repeat labels aloud"

Daigo said "And someone to break shelves if shelves get ideas"

Miyo said "And perimeter route watch, because covered delivery passages make false exits easy"

Katsu looked at each of them.

"You all did that at once"

Daigo smiled.

"We are annoying in formation"

Rei said nothing.

That was important.

Sakabe wrote on the board.

Potential student functions

- low-output residual route reading

- role-assignment detection

- worker instruction / civilian movement

- perimeter route watch

- physical interruption if shelves / tags animate

- formal ledger wording review

- communication correction if roles begin replacing names

Then she looked at Rei.

"You may decline"

The room disliked the sentence.

That meant it needed to exist.

Rei looked at the mission file.

Textile district.

Missing tag.

Rooms assigning roles.

Adults failed safely.

Function named before draw.

No extraction.

No shame.

"What is the time limit?"

Sakabe’s eyes sharpened.

"Twenty minutes inside active storage boundary. Five-minute interior cycles. Exit after each cycle unless route stability confirmed"

"Adult lead?"

"Moriyama on site. I manage student route. District liaison handles workers. Oda receives copies only"

Oda said "False"

Sakabe did not turn.

"Oda receives copies officially only"

"Better"

Rei asked "Student team?"

Sakabe pointed to the board.

"Mikage for low-output residual route reading. Suda for communication correction. Kamo for ledger wording and formal route review. Inoue for worker movement if civilians present. Zenin for physical interruption under call. Miyo for perimeter route watch. Hara and Mizuta observe from outer line only"

Katsu’s expression darkened.

"What about me?"

Sakabe looked at him.

"You are not assigned to this field"

"I can fight"

"Yes"

"Then why not?"

"Because the field punishes people who enter rooms to prove they belong there"

Daigo made a small appreciative sound.

Katsu flushed.

Unauthorized tale usage: if you spot this story on Amazon, report the violation.

"That is not what I—"

Sakabe cut him off.

"It may not be what you intend. It is what the curse will use"

That landed.

Katsu looked away.

Hayato watched him with something like sympathy.

Not pity.

Good.

Rei said "I accept the function"

Sakabe said "Say it fully"

Of course.

He breathed.

"I accept low-output residual route reading and role-assignment detection under adult lead, time limit, and exit cycles. I do not accept standing assignment to route-dependent missions. I do not accept being summoned by resemblance"

Oda stamped something so hard Hara jumped.

Daigo whispered "Good"

Akiha said "Yes"

Moriyama said "Field at third bell"

The textile district smelled like dye, wet wood, old silk, dust, and money pretending it had no odor.

Workers stood outside the main warehouse in small clusters, whispering under awnings while district officials tried to look calm. Cloth bolts had been stacked near the street, some wrapped in protective paper, others marked with talismans that looked too new to belong. Rain had fallen earlier and left the stones dark. Red dye water trickled along the gutter like something had been wounded politely.

Miyo vanished into visibility at the perimeter.

She stood on a delivery step in plain sight, watching reflections in a puddle, which made three workers glance at her and then fail to understand why they had noticed her.

Hayato went first to the workers, not the curse site.

Good.

He introduced himself without title.

"Inoue Hayato. I will help with movement instructions if needed. Do not read room labels aloud. Do not repeat shelf names if they change. If someone tells you to enter because the room knows you, do not enter"

A worker frowned.

"The room knows us?"

Hayato shook his head.

"No. That sentence is unsafe. Use people names outside. Use room numbers only when Sakabe-sensei confirms"

The worker swallowed.

"Understood"

Daigo muttered "He sounds official"

Akiha said "Steady"

"Still official"

"Steady official"

Daigo considered.

"Acceptable"

Tomonari stood near the ledger office with a district clerk who looked personally insulted by cursed paperwork.

The clerk held up the inventory book.

"It keeps reordering itself only when consulted"

Tomonari said "Do not open it yet"

"I was told you need to review wording"

"I do. Not while it is hungry"

The clerk blinked.

Akiha smiled politely.

"The book is part of the field. Please do not feed it attention without purpose"

The clerk closed the book very slowly.

Rei stood at the main warehouse threshold.

The active boundary was not a barrier in the formal sense. It was a habit that had learned cursed energy. The rooms had been used for generations to assign things: raw silk, dyed silk, winter cotton, summer cotton, damaged bolts, ritual cloth, household orders, temple orders, cursed object storage, unclaimed, returned, misdelivered.

Assigning was the building’s memory.

The curse had not invented that.

It had found it.

Moriyama said "First cycle. Five minutes. Entry team: Mikage, Suda, Kamo. Zenin at threshold. Inoue outside with workers. Miyo perimeter. I enter if called. Sakabe holds line"

Daigo looked offended.

"Threshold?"

Akiha said "The shelves have not earned you yet"

He smiled.

"Good answer"

Rei entered.

The first room was full of cloth.

Rows of bolts stood in racks that reached almost to the ceiling, wrapped in paper, labeled in black ink, some tags old enough to curl at the edges. The air felt soft in the way dusty rooms felt soft before a shelf fell.

Tomonari opened a blank field ledger.

Akiha watched the labels.

Rei breathed.

Low-output.

Public technique.

Controlled excellence.

Not false mediocrity.

Residues ran along the floor between shelves like threads pulled from old sleeves. Worker routes. Delivery routes. Clerk routes. Ward specialist route from dawn. And beneath them, something that moved like a finger tracing labels after everyone left.

Thirty seconds.

"Adult specialist entered as specialist" Rei said "Changed near second rack"

Tomonari wrote.

"To inventory assistant?"

"Yes. No. First to temporary assistant. Then inventory assistant after ledger attention"

Akiha said "Role strengthened when recorded"

Tomonari wrote that too.

One minute.

A tag on the left rack turned slightly.

Not moved.

Turned attention toward them.

Low-Value Dyed Silk

Then:

Low-Value Support

Akiha saw it.

"No"

The tag stilled.

Rei did not look at it directly.

Good.

The field had tried the easy route first.

Akiha said "Label attempted support replacement"

Tomonari said "Recorded"

Rei continued down the aisle.

Two minutes.

The missing tag residue was not near cursed object storage.

Too obvious.

It had passed through cursed object storage, then returned to ordinary inventory. That was worse. The curse had taken the authority of a restricted tag and moved it into mundane labeling.

A worker could be misfiled as cloth.

A student could be misfiled as function.

Three minutes.

Akiha said "Exit remains behind us"

Tomonari said "Ledger line stable"

Rei reached the third rack.

A tag shifted.

Unclaimed

Then:

Unassigned Student

Tomonari inhaled.

Akiha said "No"

The tag twitched.

Rei felt the field ask for a name.

Not his.

Any.

If someone said a student name inside the aisle, the room would try to place it.

He raised one hand.

"Names outside only"

Akiha repeated "Names outside only"

Tomonari wrote:

Name use unsafe inside active aisle.

Four minutes.

Rei saw the route.

The missing cursed object tag had attached itself to the category unclaimed because unclaimed things could be moved without argument. From there, the curse had started reassigning people to whatever role let the room move them.

Unclaimed.

Misdelivered.

Temporary assistant.

Low-value support.

Inventory assistant.

Unassigned student.

The tag wanted someone useful enough to carry it and undefined enough to move.

Rei stepped back.

"Out"

Akiha did not ask if he had enough.

Good.

They exited at four minutes twenty.

The warehouse exhaled like a disappointed clerk.

At the threshold, Daigo looked from Rei’s face to Akiha’s.

"What did it try?"

Akiha said "Support replacement"

Daigo’s expression changed.

"Who?"

"Not who. Role"

Tomonari added "Unassigned student"

Daigo looked toward the shelves.

"I am going to break something"

"Not yet" Rei said

Daigo clicked his tongue.

"Eventually?"

"Probably"

"Good"

Hayato returned from the workers.

"One apprentice is missing from the outside count"

The air changed.

Sakabe said "Name?"

Hayato looked at the warehouse.

"Outside?"

"Outside"

"Fujimori Ren"

Rei’s stomach tightened at the given name because his own was not the only name that could become a hook.

Hayato continued "Age sixteen. Apprentice dyer. Last seen carrying returned cloth to Storage House Two before dawn response. Workers assumed he came out with adult team because the ledger marked assistant present"

Tomonari’s face went cold.

"Inventory assistant"

Akiha said "Adult specialist exited as inventory assistant"

Miyo’s voice came from the perimeter.

"Delivery passage between Two and Four has fresh foot residue. Young. Dragged? No. Redirected"

Moriyama’s gaze sharpened.

"So this is no longer missing tag only"

Hayato said "Missing person"

Oda would have hated how fast the mission changed shape.

Rei did too.

Sakabe looked at him.

"Function update?"

Rei answered before resemblance could answer for him.

"Find unclaimed category route and prevent apprentice from being finalized as inventory"

Sakabe nodded.

"Accepted. Second cycle. Adjusted team"

Daigo said "Now threshold?"

"Inside second line" Moriyama said "No breaking tags unless called"

"Getting closer"

Akiha looked at Hayato.

"You need to enter?"

Hayato swallowed.

"Maybe"

Rei said "No names inside active aisle unless exit-stable"

Hayato nodded.

"I can speak without names"

"Can you speak to someone the room has mislabeled?"

Hayato’s face paled.

Then steadied.

"Yes"

Daigo said "Human good"

Hayato breathed.

"Field good first"

Moriyama said "Second cycle"

Storage House Two was colder.

Not physically.

Categorically.

Returned goods lined one wall. Damaged goods another. Misdelivered goods occupied shelves near the rear, wrapped in gray paper. A narrow passage connected to Storage House Four through a covered delivery corridor that smelled of rain and old straw.

Miyo held the perimeter line outside the passage.

Daigo stood inside the threshold now, hand near his practice blade.

Hayato entered beside Akiha.

Tomonari carried no ledger this time. He carried three blank tags with no strings attached.

Rei looked at them.

Tomonari said "Neutral tags. No category. No names"

"Good"

Two minutes began to feel expensive immediately.

The room knew they had noticed.

Tags shifted without waiting to be read.

Returned.

Misdelivered.

Unclaimed.

Temporary.

Assistant.

A whisper moved between shelves.

Not a voice.

A filing habit with hunger.

Hayato’s hands tightened.

Akiha said "Speak to breath first"

Hayato nodded.

He did not call the apprentice’s name.

He said "If there is a person here who can hear me, do not answer with a role. Make one sound"

Silence.

Then, from the rear wall, a faint knock.

Daigo moved.

Akiha said "No"

He stopped.

Barely.

Rei followed the sound through residue.

Not sound.

Contact.

A person behind misdelivered cloth.

Not trapped physically. Routed socially, if a room could do such a thing. Every time he tried to leave, the room likely offered him the exit assigned to whatever role it had given him. If he accepted, he looped deeper.

Hayato said "Good. Again if you can breathe"

One knock.

Alive.

Rei moved toward the rear, keeping his eyes off the labels that wanted to become true.

A tag shifted near his shoulder.

Route Support

Then:

Assigned Route Support

Akiha said "No"

The tag froze.

Another shifted beside Hayato.

Civilian Voice

Then:

Caller

Hayato flinched.

Daigo stepped forward.

Akiha said "Daigo"

He growled but stopped.

Tomonari placed a blank tag on the floor.

Not on a shelf.

On the floor.

"No category accepted"

The room shuddered.

Good.

Rei reached the rear shelf.

"Person behind damaged gray cloth. Not shelf. Not inventory"

Hayato said "If you can hear me, touch the floor, not the cloth"

A hand appeared below the hanging rolls, palm flat against the dusty floor.

Human.

Not tag.

Rei breathed.

The room tightened.

A shelf label above the hand shifted.

Unclaimed Assistant

Then:

Unclaimed

Then blank.

The missing tag had to be there.

"Tag above rear shelf" Rei said

Daigo smiled.

"Now?"

Moriyama’s voice came through the line.

"Break shelf support, not tag"

Daigo moved like he had been waiting his entire life for a sentence that precise.

He struck the lower wooden brace. The shelf lurched but did not fall. Cloth rolls shifted. The hand pulled back. A boy crawled out, face gray with dust, eyes unfocused, lips moving silently.

Hayato crouched but did not touch him.

"Do not tell us what the room called you. Tell us where your feet are"

The apprentice blinked.

"Floor"

"Good. Your hands?"

"Floor"

"Good. Move toward my voice. Not the label. Not the shelf. Voice"

A tag on the broken shelf snapped loose.

It fluttered down without wind.

Blank on one side.

On the other, old ink appeared and disappeared too quickly.

Cursed Object Tag — restricted.

Unclaimed.

Assistant.

Support.

Route.

Student.

Rei felt it reach for the nearest undefined function.

Him.

Not name.

Function.

The System opened and slammed shut instantly, not with text, but with pressure.

No extraction.

Not now.

Function before draw.

Power cannot be answer to shame.

Power may answer function.

The tag fluttered toward his sleeve.

Satoru would have stopped it with impossible distance.

Geto would have swallowed it with a curse.

Shoko would have called him an idiot if he grabbed it barehanded.

Rei did not grab it.

"Tomonari"

Tomonari threw a blank tag.

Rei caught the blank tag between two fingers and placed it in the path of the falling cursed tag.

Not covering.

Not naming.

Interrupting.

Akiha said "No category accepted"

Hayato said "Person first"

Daigo broke the second shelf brace.

Miyo called from outside "Delivery passage changing"

Moriyama said "Exit cycle"

The cursed tag struck the blank tag.

For one second, both hung in the air.

The room asked:

What is this?

Rei answered carefully.

"Evidence"

The tag stopped.

Not solved.

Held.

Tomonari repeated "Evidence. Not assignment"

Akiha said "Evidence. Not role"

Hayato said "Evidence. Not person"

Daigo said "Evidence. Not mine to hit yet?"

Moriyama said "Not yet"

Daigo swore.

The apprentice crawled fully free.

Hayato guided him toward the threshold without using his name, role, or apprentice status. Just body. Breath. Floor. Door. Outside voice.

They exited at four minutes fifty-eight.

The warehouse did not exhale this time.

It inhaled.

That was worse.

Outside, Shoko would have told them to sit down if she were there.

She was not.

Kyoto had Sakabe, who told them to sit down with less medical authority and more administrative threat.

The apprentice, Fujimori Ren, was treated by the district medic and confirmed alive, disoriented, and dehydrated. He had spent almost a full day inside shifting storage routes, convinced he was following instructions from the ledger office. He remembered labels more clearly than people.

Hayato stayed near him until his breathing steadied.

Not as assignment.

As chosen presence.

Rei watched the cursed tag inside a containment sleeve on the table.

It pulsed faintly against the blank tag Tomonari had used to interrupt it.

Evidence.

Not assignment.

Temporary hold.

Not closure.

Sakabe looked at Rei.

"Third cycle?"

Moriyama answered before he could.

"No"

Everyone turned.

Moriyama said "Students achieved missing person extraction and tag containment hold. Adult sealing team handles final removal"

Daigo objected instantly.

"We found it"

"Yes"

"We can finish"

"Yes"

"Then why—"

Akiha said "Because finishing what we found is how standing function grows teeth"

Daigo stopped.

Mouth open.

Then closed it.

Hated it.

Accepted it.

Rei felt something in his chest loosen and ache.

The field needed him.

Once.

It did not get to keep him until finished.

Sakabe wrote the decision.

Student function complete:

- missing person located

- role-assignment route identified

- cursed tag contained as evidence

- worker instruction stabilized

- no student retained for final sealing

Adult sealing team assumes responsibility.

The district clerk looked panicked.

"But the students understand the route"

Sakabe looked at him.

"Yes"

"Then should they not—"

Akiha said "No"

The clerk flinched.

She softened her tone by one degree.

"Understanding a route does not make a student responsible for walking it until the end"

Tomonari added "We can provide a record"

Hayato said "And worker instructions"

Daigo said "And I can break something if final sealing fails near civilians"

Moriyama said "Conditionally"

Daigo looked relieved.

Rei said "The tag is evidence, not assignment"

The clerk swallowed.

"Understood"

Not fully.

Enough.

Minimum good.

The final sealing took two hours.

Adult sealing team entered with Tomonari’s wording, Hayato’s worker instructions, Rei’s route map, Akiha’s communication boundary, Miyo’s perimeter notes, and Daigo’s marked shelf breaks. They recovered the cursed tag fully, detached it from the unclaimed category, and found the original cursed object exactly where it had always been: properly stored, properly sealed, harmless while named correctly.

The tag had become the curse’s mouth.

Not the object.

The label.

Oda’s future rage could be felt across Kyoto.

The preliminary report was written before sunset.

Western Kyoto Textile District — Preliminary Student Function Report

Adult first response:

failed safely

Student function:

authorized after adult failure and function naming

Key findings:

- rooms not physically moving

- roles assigned inside rooms changed exits

- labels attempted to replace function / personhood

- missing cursed object tag attached to “unclaimed” category

- apprentice Fujimori Ren misrouted as assistant / inventory-related role

- no names to be used inside active aisle until exit stability established

- blank tag used to interrupt assignment

- cursed tag contained as evidence, not role

- adult team completed final sealing

Boundary:

mission resembling student function did not summon student automatically.

Student function ended before final adult sealing.

Daigo read the final line.

"Ended before final adult sealing"

His voice sounded like he hated it and needed it.

Hayato said "Good?"

Daigo frowned.

"Yes"

"Human good?"

"Field good"

"Enough"

"Do not use my own categories against me"

"They are shared now"

Daigo looked horrified.

Akiha smiled.

The return to school was quiet.

Not because they were unhurt. They had no real injuries beyond dust, strain, and the kind of fatigue that came from not letting a room call you by a job until you became one.

It was quiet because the mission had resembled Rei and not become him.

That mattered.

In the review room, Sakabe placed the report on the table.

Oda had arrived before them.

Of course.

The report already had red marks.

Sakabe stared.

"I sent this ten minutes ago"

Oda said "Too slow"

Daigo whispered "Paper fears her"

Oda pointed to the phrase student function ended

"Good"

Sakabe looked suspicious.

"That is all?"

"No"

"Of course"

Oda pointed to apprentice Fujimori Ren misrouted as assistant

"Add: person recovered before role accepted as identity"

Hayato nodded.

"Please"

Oda pointed to blank tag used to interrupt assignment

"Add: blank does not mean available"

Tomonari said "Yes"

Oda pointed to evidence, not role

"Keep. Underline"

Daigo said "Beautiful"

Oda looked at him.

"Ugly beautiful"

"Correct"

Rei sat through the corrections and felt the System waiting.

Not offering.

Watching.

That was new.

Maybe not new.

Maybe he was only old enough to notice now.

At the end, Sakabe asked each assigned student one question.

Not performance.

Not grading.

Review.

"Suda. What nearly became wrong?"

Akiha answered "The clerk almost made understanding into continued obligation"

"Kamo"

"Ledger review nearly became authority to name people inside the field"

"Zenin"

"Breaking the tag would have felt good and possibly made it worse"

"Inoue"

"Calling the apprentice by name too early might have given the room a stronger handle"

"Miyo"

"Perimeter routes changed when inside team found tag. I almost followed the delivery passage alone"

Sakabe nodded.

"Mikage"

Rei looked at the report.

"The mission looked like my function"

"And?"

"I accepted after adult failure and function naming"

"And?"

"I wanted to finish because stopping felt like leaving the route alive"

"And?"

"That feeling was not assignment"

Sakabe wrote.

"Accepted"

Oda stamped.

Moriyama, from the window, said "Good"

Daigo muttered "School good?"

Rei looked at the report.

Then at the students.

Then at the instructors.

Then at Oda’s red marks.

"School good"

Everyone stared.

He added "Temporary"

Daigo relaxed.

"Better"

The System opened that night in his dormitory.

[Textile District event processed]

Mission:

Western Kyoto textile district

low-grade curse cluster / role-assignment distortion / missing cursed object tag

Adult first response:

failed safely

Student function:

authorized after adult failure and named function

Outcome:

apprentice recovered

cursed tag contained

adult team completed final sealing

no student retained as standing route

A second message appeared.

[Key findings]

Rooms did not physically move.

Assigned roles changed exits.

Missing cursed object tag attached to “unclaimed” category.

Curse vector:

label -> function -> role -> identity -> route control

Defense:

names restricted inside active aisle

blank tag used as interruption

cursed tag named evidence, not assignment

student function ended before final sealing

A third.

[New analytical principles registered]

Blank does not mean available.

Evidence is not assignment.

Understanding a route does not make a student responsible for walking it until the end.

A mission can resemble your function without becoming yours.

A role accepted under structure must still be allowed to end.

Then:

[Extraction delay remains active]

No category function named.

No extraction issued.

Note:

Current event reinforces delayed-power discipline.

Power was not required for successful function completion.

Current progress:

mission-resemblance boundary / role-assignment resistance / school-good temporary

Continue surviving consequence.

Rei looked at the last lines for a long time.

Power was not required.

Again.

Annoying.

Good.

He wrote:

The mission looked like me.

It was not mine until function was named.

It stopped being mine before the end.

Blank does not mean available.

Evidence is not assignment.

Understanding does not create forever.

School good.

Temporary.

He stamped it.

Plain.

The mark held.

The letter to Tokyo went out the next morning.

Rei wrote only part of it.

Satoru,

Kyoto’s textile district tried to assign people by role.

Missing cursed object tag attached itself to “unclaimed”

Apprentice recovered.

Tag contained as evidence, not assignment.

Adult team finished sealing.

Mission looked like my function.

It did not become mine.

Rei

Akiha added:

Understanding a route does not make a student responsible for walking it until the end.

Tomonari added:

Blank does not mean available.

Hayato added:

Calling someone by name too early can be unsafe if the room wants handles.

That sentence is field-specific.

Do not use it everywhere.

Daigo added:

I was not allowed to break the tag.

This was probably correct and definitely unfair.

Miyo added:

Delivery passage changed after tag found.

Perimeter routes listen too.

Oda added:

Bannai should be informed that “evidence, not assignment” is report language worth preserving.

Oda

Satoru’s reply arrived four days later.

Rei and room,

Textile curse sounds like Kyoto furniture finally became honest.

Blank does not mean available is excellent.

Suguru wrote it down.

Shoko says do not inhale textile dust because you all probably did.

Daigo not breaking the tag shows alarming maturity.

Watch that.

The vow did not pull.

This is surrounding structure.

Satoru

Below, in Geto’s hand:

A role accepted under structure must still be allowed to end.

I needed that line.

I will try not to make needing it yours.

Geto Suguru

Below that, Shoko’s smaller handwriting:

Textile dust causes worse coughing when idiots pretend not to cough.

This is medical, not philosophical.

Ieiri Shoko

Daigo coughed while reading it.

Everyone looked at him.

He pointed at the paper.

"Delayed effect"

Shoko, miles away, somehow won.

Far away, the unknown reader received the Textile District Preliminary Report, the adult sealing addendum, and the informal Tokyo letter.

The gloved hand rested on:

A mission can resemble your function without becoming yours.

Then on:

Power was not required for successful function completion.

Then on:

Student function ended before final adult sealing.

The brush moved.

Stronger resemblance resisted.

Mission resembled Rei.

Structure prevented automatic ownership.

Power not drawn.

A pause.

Then:

School machine adapting.

Students correcting early.

Need pressure not enough.

Resemblance not enough.

Usefulness not enough.

The reader opened a new sheet.

The brush hovered.

Then wrote:

Next:

not mission.

not school.

not field.

Peer pressure.

Make students want classification.

The sheet was folded.

In Kyoto, the mission board changed again by morning.

The textile district notice moved from Pending Review to Completed Adult Follow-Up.

No student name attached.

That was the victory.

Small.

Temporary.

School good.

Enough to continue.

Not enough to trust.
