JJK: Behind The Strongest

The First Classification

Chapter 79

Kyoto did not wait a full day before trying to classify them.

That was almost comforting.

The entrance ceremony had ended the previous morning with old wood, cedar shade, formal words, and Moriyama’s scar cutting through the principal’s language like a correction made of flesh. The new first-years had bowed. Families had watched. Teachers had pretended not to measure which students belonged to which families, which techniques could be used too early, which children were already valuable, and which ones would become expensive if mishandled.

By sunrise the next day, the main hall had turned ceremony into paper.

Oda had warned them.

"School is an archive that learned to move"

Daigo had objected.

"Schools have training yards"

Oda had looked at him over her glasses.

"Archives also have places where people bleed"

No one had known how to answer that.

Now Rei stood in the first-year assignment hall and decided Oda had been understating.

The hall was long, polished, and old enough to make every footstep feel like it had entered a conversation already in progress. Wooden boards lined the left wall. Names hung in neat rows, each written on pale cards beneath route categories. Field Combat. Barrier Support. Civilian Handling. Reconnaissance. Cursed Tool Fundamentals. Clan Technique Development. Medical Support. Archive and Records. Emergency Pairings. Provisional Grade Tracks.

The cards did not shout.

They did not need to.

They waited.

That was worse.

Daigo stopped in front of his name and stared.

Zenin Daigo

Primary:

Close-Pressure Interruption

Secondary:

Hostile Room Resistance

Restriction:

Family Route Containment Required

He nodded once.

"Acceptable"

Tomonari stood beside him.

"That is suspiciously calm"

"It says I interrupt things"

"It also says family route containment"

"I like when the paper admits who is causing problems"

Tomonari looked at his own card.

Kamo Tomonari

Primary:

Formal Route Management

Secondary:

Bloodline Procedure / Field Support

Restriction:

Standing Family Assignment Prohibited Without Review

His mouth tightened.

Akiha saw it.

"Cost?"

Tomonari did not look away from the card.

"The word bloodline written beside field support"

Daigo said "Ugly"

"Yes"

"And the restriction?"

Tomonari inhaled.

"Good"

"Good ugly?"

"Necessary ugly"

Oda would have approved.

Akiha’s card was worse because it was too polite.

Suda Akiha

Primary:

Communication Stability

Secondary:

Retainer Politics / Room Assessment

Restriction:

Social Stabilization Requests Require Named Purpose

Akiha stared at it.

"Still stabilizing"

Daigo leaned closer.

"It is trying to survive you"

"It should try harder"

She reached into her sleeve, took out a small red correction strip Oda had absolutely not officially given her, and placed it beneath the card.

Correction:

Structured Disruption Prevention

A student behind them whispered "Can she do that?"

Miyo, who had appeared beside the wall without anyone noticing, said "She already did"

The whispering stopped.

Miyo’s card hung in the reconnaissance row.

Miyo

Primary:

External Route Detection

Secondary:

Reconnaissance / Observer Control

Restriction:

Visibility Practice Mandatory

Daigo made the mistake of breathing too loudly.

Miyo turned her head.

He raised both hands.

"I said nothing"

"You thought loudly"

"That is not yet regulated"

Akiha said "Give Oda time"

Hayato’s card sat beneath Civilian Handling, not Archive and Records.

That mattered.

Inoue Hayato

Primary:

Civilian Handling

Secondary:

Evacuation Language / Low-Output Reinforcement

Restriction:

Phrase Burden Monitoring

He read it quietly.

No one spoke until he did.

"Good"

Daigo looked at him.

"Human good?"

Hayato smiled a little.

"School good"

"That sounds fake"

"It is more true than fake"

"Terrible category"

Rei found his own card last.

Not because it was hidden.

Because he knew where it would be and delayed looking anyway.

It hung in Barrier Support, but close enough to Field Command that the placement was either careful or cowardly.

Probably both.

Mikage Rei

Primary:

Residual Route Analysis

Secondary:

Barrier-Adjacent Field Interpretation / Low-Output Support Command

Provisional Grade Track:

Grade 2 Evaluation Eligible

Restriction:

Avoid Overassignment to Route-Dependent Missions

Note:

Low Visible Disruption Risk

Daigo made a sound.

Akiha looked at the note.

Tomonari looked at the category placement.

Miyo looked at the gap between Barrier Support and Field Command.

Hayato looked at Rei.

Rei looked at the words.

Low Visible Disruption Risk.

Not even low disruption risk now.

Visible had survived.

Good.

Dangerous.

Someone had learned.

Someone had also chosen to leave it there.

A voice behind them said "That note was argued over for forty minutes"

Rei turned.

A woman in a dark instructor’s uniform stood near the center aisle with a stack of tablets under one arm. She was not Moriyama. Younger, perhaps late twenties, with blunt-cut hair, tired eyes, and a scar across the back of one hand that looked like something had tried to bite through a talisman and met her instead.

"Sakabe Nao" she said "First-year field coordination"

Daigo looked at the stack.

"Are those more classifications?"

"Yes"

"Honest. I hate it less"

"Good. Hate it while walking"

She moved down the hall without waiting.

The first-years followed.

Not only Rei’s cohort. There were others now, and that was the second problem.

The world had grown.

Kyoto’s first-year class was not large. Jujutsu classes never were. But it was larger than the room Rei had spent years surviving inside.

A thin boy named Hara Issei walked with a cursed tool case held too tightly against his side. A girl from a minor shrine family, Mizuta Riko, kept looking at Daigo’s Zenin crest and then looking away too slowly. Two cousins from a provincial line whispered about Gojo Satoru as if saying his name in Kyoto were a mild act of rebellion. A broad-shouldered student named Umehara Katsu had already decided Daigo was either a rival or a ladder, and Rei disliked him for not yet knowing which.

There were older students in the yard when Sakabe led them outside.

Second-years and third-years watched from the training veranda. Not openly enough to be rude. Openly enough to be useful to them.

Kyoto students learned early that being observed was not an event.

It was weather.

Rei felt the System stir but not open.

Good.

The morning yard had been divided into five stations.

Residual reading.

Pressure response.

Civilian extraction.

Barrier seam recognition.

Close-field decision timing.

Sakabe turned to face the group.

"Today is not a ranking"

Daigo whispered "Lie"

Sakabe looked directly at him.

"Correct"

Daigo blinked.

She continued "It is not an official ranking. It is an initial movement profile. That means everyone will rank you anyway and pretend not to. Your task is not to stop them. Your task is to avoid performing for the wrong observer"

The yard went quiet.

Akiha’s eyes sharpened.

Tomonari looked like he had found something unpleasantly competent.

Miyo became slightly more visible.

Hayato breathed in.

Sakabe handed the tablets to an assistant.

"Rules. No full technique disclosure beyond declared categories. No family route challenges. No direct grade comparisons. No private wagers. No injury concealment. No dramatic self-sacrifice. Anyone saying they are fine while bleeding on my floor will become a written example"

Daigo muttered "Shoko relative?"

Rei almost smiled.

Sakabe heard.

"Do I want context?"

"No" Akiha said

"Excellent"

Station one was residual reading.

A simple field.

Too simple.

Three cursed residues had been placed through a practice room: one curse route, one sorcerer route, one civilian panic route. Students had to identify which was which, reconstruct movement, and mark the unsafe exit.

Hara Issei went first and made a careful technical error by overvaluing the strongest residue. Mizuta Riko correctly identified the civilian panic route but missed the sorcerer backtrack. Umehara Katsu declared the curse route obvious and was wrong so loudly that even Daigo looked impressed.

The narrative has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the infringement.

Then Rei’s name was called.

The yard adjusted.

Not dramatically.

Enough.

Older students leaned differently.

A second-year muttered "Mikage"

Another whispered "Kameoka"

A third said "Low disruption risk"

Daigo’s head turned.

Akiha touched his sleeve once.

He stopped.

Barely.

Rei stepped into the room.

Public self.

Not corpse.

Not confession.

Mask breathing.

The practice room smelled of old straw mats, talisman ash, and student sweat. The residues were clear enough to be educational, muddy enough to punish arrogance. He could have solved it in five breaths if he used everything the System had taught his body and mind to do together.

He took twelve.

Controlled excellence.

Not false mediocrity.

He crouched by the south wall, touched no residue directly, and let Residual Threading show what it publicly could.

"Civilian panic route starts north threshold, crosses center twice, exits west, returns halfway, then stops near storage screen"

Sakabe said "Why stops?"

"Not stop. Hidden behind stronger sorcerer residue"

He stood and pointed to the beam above the east exit.

"Sorcerer route backtracks overhead"

A murmur moved through the veranda.

Rei ignored it.

"Curse route is the weakest residue"

Hara looked startled.

Sakabe’s eyes narrowed.

"Explain"

"It was dragged through stronger marks to make pursuit choose visible residue. Real curse route follows the cold seam near floor, then exits through east threshold after civilian panic draws attention west"

"And unsafe exit?"

"West if responding to panic only. East if pursuing curse only"

Sakabe’s mouth twitched.

"Choose one"

"No"

The assistant looked up.

Daigo smiled slowly.

Sakabe’s expression did not change.

"This station asks for one unsafe exit"

"The station is wrong"

The yard became very still.

Not because a student contradicted an instructor.

Because he did it calmly.

Rei continued "If team splits without communication, both exits become unsafe. If civilian handler moves west alone, curse exits east. If exorcist pursues east alone, civilian panic route reactivates west. Unsafe condition is not exit. It is split decision without shared call"

Sakabe stared at him.

Then took the tablet and wrote.

"Answer accepted"

Daigo whispered "Low visible disruption risk"

Akiha whispered "Visible"

Rei returned to the line.

Umehara Katsu stared at him.

"So support command means telling the test it is wrong?"

Rei looked at him.

"Only when it is"

Katsu’s face flushed.

Daigo leaned forward.

"Do not start a room you cannot finish"

Sakabe called from the station "Zenin"

Daigo straightened.

"What?"

"That counts as starting"

"Unfair"

"Correct. Station two"

Pressure response was built to expose pride.

Naturally, Daigo loved it.

Students entered a marked circle while three low-grade pressure pulses struck from hidden talismans. The goal was not to endure the most. It was to identify when pressure became bait and exit before the fourth pulse turned the circle into a grip.

Most first-years tried to look strong.

That was the trap.

Umehara Katsu took four pulses and had to be dragged out by an assistant, furious and shaking.

Daigo stepped in next.

The first pulse hit his shoulder.

He grinned.

The second pulse hit his ribs.

His grin widened.

The third pulse formed beneath his feet.

His eyes changed.

Not because he feared it.

Because he recognized the shape.

Audience trap.

He stepped out before the fourth pulse.

Several older students laughed.

Someone said "Zenin quit"

Daigo turned his head.

Akiha inhaled.

Rei felt the floor tilt.

Daigo smiled.

Not kindly.

"If the fourth pulse wants me to stay because idiots are watching, it can file a request"

Sakabe wrote.

"Good"

The laughter stopped.

Daigo returned to the line and looked violently unhappy with being praised.

Hayato’s station came later.

Civilian extraction.

No curse visible. No combat. Just three practice civilians in a room with contradictory instructions, false authority badges, and one crying voice behind a screen that was not a person.

The first student ran to the crying voice.

Failed.

The second tried to command everyone at once.

Failed.

Hayato entered looking pale.

The crying voice started immediately.

"Help me"

His shoulders tightened.

Rei saw it.

Daigo saw it.

Akiha saw it.

Hayato did not move toward the screen.

He looked at the closest practice civilian, a second-year wearing ordinary clothes and panic badly enough to be intentional.

"Can you hear me?"

The second-year blinked.

The crying voice grew louder.

"Please"

Hayato did not turn.

"Can you hear me?" he asked again

The civilian nodded.

"Good. Then you are my first person. Stand up if you can. Point if you cannot"

The civilian stood.

The false authority badge near the door said "Leave crying child first"

Hayato glanced at it once.

"Badge gives instruction without body. Not first"

The second civilian resisted evacuation because "my brother is behind the screen"

Hayato asked "Did you see him go there?"

"No"

"Did you hear the voice use his name?"

"No"

"Then we do not give the voice your brother"

The second civilian shook.

Hayato’s voice stayed low.

"We can be scared while leaving"

The room cleared in under the limit.

The screen opened afterward.

Nothing behind it.

Hayato came out shaking.

Not badly.

Enough.

Sakabe looked at the tablet.

"Good"

Hayato swallowed.

"School good?"

Sakabe looked up.

"What?"

Daigo said "Long story"

Akiha said "Human good too"

Hayato breathed.

"Thank you"

Some of the other first-years looked confused.

That was fine.

Not everything needed translation.

Tomonari’s formal route station was a document trap wearing a practical exercise. He had to process a field request from a family office seeking student support for a minor cursed object retrieval. The request included polite language, apparent urgency, and three hidden clauses that would convert student assistance into future availability.

Tomonari read for one minute.

Then took the brush and crossed out the honorific greeting.

The assistant looked alarmed.

Tomonari said "The greeting is carrying leverage"

Sakabe, watching from behind him, said "Continue"

He marked the first clause.

"Urgency not tied to harm"

The second.

"Family office requesting student by implied bloodline competence without named function"

The third.

"Future consultation expectation hidden in gratitude language"

He wrote the refusal.

Request denied in current form.

Resubmit with:

specific cursed object behavior

adult alternatives considered

named student function if any

time limit

no future consultation implication

no bloodline expectation

Sakabe read it.

"Cold"

Tomonari said "Yes"

"Correct"

He exhaled.

The Kamo cousins on the veranda did not laugh.

Good.

Akiha’s station should have been communication stability.

It became something else because Akiha existed.

The exercise placed four students in a mock briefing where an instructor gave an intentionally incomplete order and one older student applied social pressure to accept it quickly. Akiha let the first incomplete order pass. Let the older student praise the group. Let Umehara Katsu accept too fast. Let the instructor turn toward Rei’s empty place in the formation though Rei was not in the exercise.

Then she raised one hand.

Sakabe said "Suda?"

Akiha smiled politely.

"This briefing has already assigned blame before assigning purpose"

The older student stiffened.

Akiha continued "Katsu accepted because the praise made hesitation look immature. The instructor looked toward Mikage’s place when discussing route uncertainty, which makes absent support responsible for a plan not yet defined. The order lacks civilian count, exit priority, curse behavior, and injury threshold. Communication stability cannot begin because the room is currently rewarding premature agreement"

The yard went silent.

Daigo whispered "Structured disruption prevention"

Miyo said "Good"

Sakabe looked at the older student.

"Response?"

The older student looked annoyed.

Then thoughtful.

"The praise was pressure"

Akiha nodded.

"Yes"

"And the glance toward Mikage’s place?"

"Expectation leak"

Rei felt the words hit him from outside the station.

Expectation leak.

Oda would like that.

No.

Oda would pretend not to like it and write it in red.

Miyo’s visibility station was last.

It looked simple.

Walk across the yard under observation and identify which watcher mattered.

No hiding.

No disappearing.

No slipping into shadow.

Walk.

Be seen.

Choose.

Miyo hated it so visibly that Daigo looked almost reverent.

She stepped into the yard.

Older students watched.

Assistants watched.

Sakabe watched.

Moriyama watched from the veranda now, arms crossed, scar unreadable.

Oda was not present.

Everyone was lying to themselves about that.

Miyo walked.

Not too fast.

Not too slow.

At the halfway point, three watchers shifted.

One assistant with a tablet.

One older student near the tool rack.

One crow on the outer wall that was not fully a crow.

Several first-years looked toward the crow.

Miyo did not.

She looked at the empty space beside the water basin.

"Watcher is absent"

Sakabe said "Explain"

"The crow wants attention. The assistant records normal. The older student watches my reaction to the crow. The basin reflection lacks one person who should appear if standing where pressure suggests"

Moriyama’s mouth moved by half a millimeter.

Maybe approval.

Maybe warning.

Miyo finished crossing.

"Visibility does not require answering every watcher"

Sakabe wrote.

"Accepted"

Daigo whispered "Horrifying"

Miyo returned to the line.

"Thank you"

"I meant admiring horrifying"

"I know"

By noon, the first-years had been classified three times, corrected twice, and fed once.

Kyoto considered this hospitality.

Lunch was taken beneath the east veranda. The cohort sat together because habit remained, but not tightly enough to reject others. Hara Issei approached with his cursed tool case and asked if he could sit near enough to listen and not close enough to be part of anything.

Daigo stared.

"That is oddly specific"

Hara flushed.

"I was told to name function"

Akiha looked at him.

"By who?"

"Oda-san"

Everyone accepted this immediately.

Hara sat.

Mizuta Riko joined after asking whether Daigo would insult her shrine family if she sat there.

Daigo said "Only if it deserves it"

She considered this.

"Fair"

She sat too.

Umehara Katsu did not sit with them, but he stopped staring at Rei after Akiha looked back once.

Progress.

Maybe.

After lunch, Sakabe led them to the mission board.

Not the student assignment board.

The mission board.

That difference mattered.

"First-years do not choose missions" she said "First-years learn how missions become choices for other people"

Daigo muttered "That sounds like paperwork again"

Sakabe said "It is"

"Terrible honesty"

"Useful honesty"

The board held current mission summaries, all restricted. Some were adult-only. Some student-observation eligible. Some support-track eligible after review. One was circled in black.

Pending Review

Location:

western Kyoto textile district

Type:

low-grade curse cluster / repeated misdirection in storage houses

Reported behavior:

workers enter wrong storage rooms

inventory records change order

minor injuries from falling shelves

one missing cursed object tag

Initial assessment:

Grade 3 cluster

Concern:

route errors increasing despite low curse pressure

Rei felt several eyes move toward him.

Not just his cohort.

Others too.

Low visible disruption risk.

Residual route analysis.

Barrier-adjacent field interpretation.

Route errors.

Akiha said "Expectation leak"

Sakabe nodded.

"Yes"

Rei looked at her.

Sakabe continued "This is why the board is shown before assignments. A mission resembling a student’s function does not summon that student"

Oda was definitely present somewhere.

No one could prove it.

Sakabe tapped the textile district summary.

"Adult team goes first. Student observation may be considered after adult route report. Mikage is not assigned by resemblance"

The yard seemed to adjust around that.

Rei breathed.

Daigo whispered "School good?"

Rei looked at the board.

"Minimum school good"

Hayato nodded.

"Enough to continue"

Sakabe’s eyes flicked toward them.

She did not ask.

Good.

The day should have ended there.

It did not.

Of course it did not.

At the final bell, a senior administrator entered the yard accompanied by two assistants and the air of someone who believed training existed beneath policy. He was old, thin, and straight-backed, with a musician’s fingers and a gaze that passed over students like inventory learning manners.

Yoshinobu Gakuganji was not yet the oldest thing in Kyoto.

He acted like he had applied.

Sakabe bowed.

"Gakuganji-sensei"

The first-years bowed a moment later.

Gakuganji’s eyes moved across the lines.

Zenin.

Kamo.

Suda.

Mikage.

Inoue.

Miyo.

Others.

His gaze paused on Rei.

Not long.

Enough.

"I observed the morning profiles" Gakuganji said

Daigo whispered "From where?"

Miyo whispered "North veranda screen"

Daigo whispered "Hate that"

Gakuganji continued "Some of you have been taught unusual language around utility"

Rei felt the hook.

Akiha’s expression became pleasant.

Tomonari’s fingers tightened around his sleeve.

Gakuganji said "That may be useful. It may also create arrogance. A sorcerer who refuses to be used may still die beside civilians who needed him"

Silence.

The sentence was not wrong.

That made it more dangerous.

Hayato’s breathing changed.

Daigo shifted forward.

Rei did not.

Akiha raised her hand.

Sakabe’s face became very still.

Gakuganji looked at her.

"Suda"

Akiha lowered her hand only after being acknowledged.

"May I answer the sentence as phrased?"

Several older students looked like they had witnessed someone draw a blade at dinner.

Gakuganji’s mouth tightened.

"Proceed"

Akiha bowed.

"A sorcerer who refuses all use may fail civilians. A school that treats usefulness as ownership may train sorcerers who cannot distinguish rescue from extraction. Both are dangerous. The first danger does not erase the second"

The yard went quiet enough to hear bamboo creak.

Gakuganji looked at her for a long moment.

Then at Rei.

"Is that your answer as well, Mikage?"

There.

A route.

Make him center.

Make Akiha’s correction his doctrine.

Make the cohort’s language his.

People checking where Rei stands.

Unsafe floor.

Rei bowed slightly.

"It is Suda’s answer"

Gakuganji’s eyes sharpened.

"And yours?"

"My answer is that civilians need sorcerers who can act without turning every need into permanent claim. Refusal is not virtue by itself. Availability is not virtue by itself. The mission defines function. The function ends unless renewed under structure"

Daigo whispered "Long"

Tomonari whispered "Correct"

Gakuganji heard both.

Probably.

His gaze stayed on Rei.

"Structure can slow action"

"Yes"

"Slowness kills"

"Yes"

"Then?"

Rei lifted his eyes.

"So does ownership disguised as speed"

The yard held its breath.

Gakuganji smiled.

It was not kind.

"Kyoto has become very fond of ugly distinctions"

Sakabe said "They survive field contact"

Gakuganji looked at her.

Then back to the first-years.

"See that they continue to"

He turned and left.

Only after he was gone did Daigo exhale.

"I hate old musicians"

Tomonari said "He did not play anything"

"He played the room"

Akiha looked at Rei.

"Cost"

"Being asked to own your answer"

She nodded.

"And?"

"Refusing without abandoning it"

"Good"

Hayato said "School good?"

Rei looked at the mission board, the assignment cards, the students who were not his old room, the administrators, the yard, the routes waiting to become habits if no one watched.

"School dangerous"

Daigo snorted.

"That was not the question"

Rei looked toward the hall where his card still hung.

"School real"

No one mocked that.

The System opened that night after Rei returned to his dormitory room.

Not his childhood room.

Not the archive.

A student room.

Small. Functional. Too clean because he had not yet made it his. The admission notice sat in a drawer. Satoru’s latest program scrap was folded inside his notebook. Geto’s line about trying not to make it yours was beneath a weight. Shoko’s wrist wrap correction had somehow followed him in the training file, because Oda believed in medical harassment across locations.

Rei sat on the floor.

The System appeared.

[Student Era initial classification processed]

Environment:

Kyoto Jujutsu High first-year structure

Public classifications received:

Residual Route Analysis

Barrier-Adjacent Field Interpretation

Low-Output Support Command

Grade 2 Evaluation Eligible

Low Visible Disruption Risk

Internal correction preserved:

high delayed consequence risk

A second message appeared.

[Public self performance]

Controlled excellence:

successful

Observed outcomes:

- residual station corrected without full profile breach

- public competence increased

- expectation leak identified by external ally

- centrality route resisted during Gakuganji exchange

- school assignment resembling function did not become automatic summons

Risk:

institutional classification pressure increasing.

A third.

[New analytical principles registered]

A mission resembling a student’s function does not summon that student.

Expectation leak:

when a room assigns responsibility before naming purpose.

A school can be home and machine.

Refusing to own an answer is not abandoning it.

School real:

dangerous enough to matter

structured enough to remain

Then:

[Extraction delay remains active]

No category function named.

No extraction issued.

Current progress:

school-entry stabilization / controlled public competence / classification boundary

Continue surviving consequence.

Rei wrote by hand.

First day.

The school named us.

We corrected some names.

Not all.

Akiha is not stabilizing.

Daigo is not only interruption.

Tomonari is not bloodline.

Miyo is not invisibility.

Hayato is not phrase burden.

I am not low disruption.

Visible is doing work.

School can be home and machine.

A mission resembling my function does not summon me.

If I forget that, Kyoto will remember badly for me.

He stamped it.

Plain.

The mark held, but the room did not yet know what to do with the sound.

A letter from Tokyo arrived the next morning.

Too fast.

Suspiciously fast.

Rei opened it during breakfast because Daigo said if it exploded at least there would be rice.

Rei,

First day report.

I was called arrogant twice before lunch.

Underreported.

Suguru was called promising.

Dangerous.

Shoko was called invaluable.

She left.

Heroic.

How did Kyoto insult you?

Satoru

Rei read it aloud because the room existed even at breakfast now, only differently.

Daigo said "Called arrogant twice is rookie numbers"

Akiha said "Shoko left?"

Hayato smiled.

"Heroic"

Tomonari said "Promising is dangerous"

Miyo said "Invaluable is worse"

Rei wrote back on the edge of his breakfast schedule.

Kyoto called me low visible disruption risk again.

Gakuganji asked if Akiha’s answer was mine.

I said it was hers.

School is real.

Rei

Satoru’s reply came three days later.

Low visible disruption risk is the funniest ongoing lie in Japan

Good answer about Akiha.

Suguru says promising is only dangerous if people make it a leash.

Shoko says invaluable is a diagnosis adults give before overusing someone.

I say school is not real until something breaks.

Satoru

Rei read the last line.

Then looked out at Kyoto’s training yard where Daigo was arguing with a practice post, Akiha was correcting a briefing sheet, Tomonari was speaking to a Kamo second-year with terrifying politeness, Miyo was standing visibly enough to make three students uncomfortable, and Hayato was teaching Hara Issei how to ask a frightened civilian to move without making movement sound like obedience.

Something had already broken.

Not loudly.

Not today.

The floor had been unsafe before they entered.

They were simply learning which parts could hold weight.

Far away, the unknown reader received Kyoto’s first-year classification boards, Gakuganji’s observation note, Sakabe’s initial movement profiles, and a copy of Satoru’s breakfast letter because informal routes were still too easy.

The gloved hand rested on:

A mission resembling a student’s function does not summon that student.

Then on:

centrality route resisted during Gakuganji exchange

Then on:

School can be home and machine.

The brush moved.

Student era begins.

Classification pressure active.

Centrality route resisted.

Kyoto machine identified by students.

A second line followed.

First mission hook rejected.

Need stronger resemblance.

The reader paused.

Then wrote:

Textile district pending.

Route errors increasing.

Missing cursed object tag.

Let adults go first.

Let them fail safely.

Then see who school remembers.

The sheet was folded.

In Kyoto, the mission board waited.

In Tokyo, fire learned its own schedules.

And Rei Mikage began his second day of school knowing the first had already tried to make him useful.

Minimum good.

Enough to continue.

Not enough to trust.
