The third notebook did not want to be opened.

That was not a mystical statement.

It was worse.

It was practical.

The first notebook had given them Tetsu and turned punishment into a false proof of care. The second had given them Amai, East Amana language, and a door that had to be read without being invited to become the center. The third sat on Oda’s table with its cloth tie still in place, and every person in the room understood that opening it would not create danger out of nowhere.

It would reveal which danger had already been waiting.

Daigo glared at the notebook.

Oda looked at him.

"To the object?"

"The notebook has no attitude"

"It has exactly the attitude of a quiet old person who knows something terrible and wants everyone else to feel rude for asking"

Inside the room, but not near the notebook, not near Sayuri, and not within reach of the page if anyone opened it too quickly. That had been Moriyama’s decision, Sayuri’s agreement, and Akiha’s condition. Rei had accepted it because acceptance sometimes meant not turning pain into evidence against the people keeping the structure intact.

He still hated it.

Akiha had asked for the cost before they began.

He had answered.

"Wanting to read. Wanting to be trusted. Knowing exclusion is not mistrust. Not believing that enough"

Daigo had said "Better"

Oda placed a second cloth on the table and used bone slips to open the fold without touching the center.

The scrap was smaller than a full page. Torn on the right side. The top had been marked in Hashimoto Eiji’s hand:

Hayato’s eyes filled with tears before he seemed to know why.

Daigo saw and looked away so sharply it became a kindness by accident.

Akiha wrote, hand steady only because she made it steady.
