JJK: Behind The Strongest

Useful Children

Chapter 51

The first real mission began with someone else using the words correctly.

That should have been encouraging.

It was not.

The report reached Kyoto at dawn, carried by a field runner whose left sleeve was stained with dried blood and whose right hand held the paper too carefully for a man pretending the situation was under control. He was not old. Not young either. Grade 3, perhaps, with the posture of someone who had been sent ahead because the person in charge needed a report to arrive faster than the injured.

Moriyama read the first page once.

Then a second time.

Then she sent for everyone.

That was how Rei knew this was not a review.

Reviews waited until breakfast to become cruel.

Missions did not.

By the time Rei arrived at the archive, the room had already been opened for field use. The long table had been cleared except for three sheets, a map, emergency tags, and Sawamura’s field case. Oda stood by the east shelf with a ledger under one arm. Moriyama stood at the table, pointer replaced by a short field baton. Sawamura was already dressed for movement, his interim field-safety tag still pinned to his folder because no one had decided whether removing it would be confidence or stupidity.

Akiha arrived immediately after Rei.

Daigo arrived loudly and then became quiet when he saw the blood on the runner’s sleeve.

Tomonari arrived with two notebooks and no unnecessary questions.

Miyo was already there.

Of course.

Hayato came last, breathless, hair slightly uneven, notebook clutched to his chest. He stopped at the threshold.

Moriyama saw him.

“This concerns Level 1 field use and outer participant language. You may stay for briefing. You are not automatically assigned”

Hayato swallowed.

“Yes, Moriyama-sensei”

Daigo muttered “Bad start when the first sentence is not automatically assigned”

Oda said “Accurate”

Daigo looked at her.

“I did not ask for preservation”

“You rarely do”

Moriyama tapped the map.

“Listen”

They did.

The runner stood near the doorway. He had given his name as Okabe Jun, assistant field handler assigned to a low-priority civilian site in eastern Kyoto. He looked exhausted, frightened, and angry in the way people became angry when fear had not found a target yet.

Moriyama read from the report.

Site:

Kusunoki After-School House

Population:

civilian children ages six to eleven

two adult caretakers

one jujutsu-aware municipal contact

Incident:

Low-grade curse suspected after repeated emotional collapse events during consent / refusal exercise introduced by local instructor.

Trigger phrase reported:

“Maybe later is not yes”

Observed effects:

- children repeat refusal language compulsively

- adults become unable to distinguish consent delay from curse-induced repetition

- one caretaker attempted forced evacuation and was restrained by paper-screen residue

- three children missing inside second-floor activity room

- curse activity increases when adults ask direct yes/no questions

Current status:

Containment incomplete.

No confirmed fatalities.

Two injured adults.

Children still inside.

No one spoke.

Then Hayato said very softly “They used the phrase”

Every eye in the room moved to him.

He did not vanish.

Barely.

Moriyama said “Yes”

Hayato stared at the report.

“Correctly?”

Sawamura answered.

“Initially, yes. The phrase was introduced in a consent drill after interim Level 1 approval”

Daigo’s jaw tightened.

“And now they will say the phrase caused it”

Oda placed a blank tag beside the report.

Level 1 language involved in active curse incident.

Do not accept causal frame before evidence.

Tomonari leaned over the page.

“Curse activity increases when adults ask direct yes/no questions”

Akiha said “It is using the phrase as a loop”

Miyo said “Or using adult fear of the phrase”

Rei looked at the map.

Kusunoki After-School House was a civilian after-school facility near an old municipal storehouse, close to a narrow canal and a row of abandoned merchant residences. Not a jujutsu school. Not an archive. Not a controlled site.

Children.

Civilian children.

The word made every structure in the room heavier.

Okabe spoke for the first time since Rei entered.

“The supervising sorcerer requested someone from Kyoto familiar with the phrase framework”

Daigo laughed once.

Sharp.

“There it is”

Moriyama looked at Okabe.

“Exact wording”

Okabe hesitated.

Then looked at the paper.

“Request states: send instructor familiar with Enough Language framework. If available, send incident-linked student consultants who can identify misuse without escalating child distress”

Silence.

Akiha’s eyes closed for half a breath.

Tomonari’s fingers tightened on his notebook.

Miyo’s expression did not change.

Hayato went pale.

Daigo said “No”

Okabe flinched.

Daigo’s voice dropped.

“No, not you. The sentence”

Oda wrote:

Useful children route active.

Request:

incident-linked student consultants

Sawamura said “They are asking for the room”

Akiha said “No. They are asking for the useful part of the room”

Miyo added “During child danger”

Rei felt the old calculation rise.

This time, the guilt came with faces he had not seen.

Three children missing inside a second-floor activity room.

Two injured adults.

A phrase that had travelled because they chose to let it travel.

Maybe later is not yes.

Enough Language.

Level 1.

His hand moved toward the map.

Daigo said “Rei”

He stopped.

Akiha looked at him.

“You are doing it before we have named whether usefulness is being demanded or needed”

Rei breathed.

“Yes”

Moriyama nodded once.

“Good stop”

Rei hated that it helped.

Hayato stepped closer to the table.

“If the phrase is looping, I should go”

Daigo turned.

“No”

Hayato flinched.

Daigo corrected himself through gritted teeth.

“I want to say no. That is different”

Hayato nodded slowly.

“Okay”

Miyo looked at Hayato.

“Why should you go?”

Hayato swallowed.

“Because I know what the phrase meant before it became a report phrase. And because if other children are repeating it, maybe an adult asking them to stop will make it worse”

Tomonari said “That is a reason”

Daigo said “It is also a hook”

Hayato nodded.

“Yes”

Akiha looked at Moriyama.

“Assignment cannot be incident-linked student consultants”

Moriyama said “Agreed”

Sawamura added “But refusing student involvement entirely may cost time and may make the field team use the phrase badly”

Daigo glared at him.

Sawamura did not retreat.

“That is the problem”

Yes.

That was the problem.

The room had spent chapters resisting use.

Now use might save children.

If they refused, someone else might be hurt.

If they accepted, the phrase incident-linked student consultants could become real.

The new arc had teeth immediately.

Oda wrote across a larger sheet:

USEFUL CHILDREN PROTOCOL — EMERGENCY DRAFT

Question:

When a student-developed structure is needed during real danger, how can students help without becoming owned by the need?

Daigo stared.

“That is too good and I hate it”

Oda said “Emergency drafts often offend”

Moriyama began assigning roles.

Not names.

Roles.

“Adult field lead: me”

Sawamura said “Field-safety support”

Oda said “Archive route remote support. I am not going to a live civilian child site unless needed”

Daigo whispered “The archive has limits?”

Oda said “The archive has sense”

Akiha said “Student participation?”

Moriyama looked at all of them.

“No automatic deployment. We identify functions needed”

Rei looked at the report.

“Phrase meaning. Child-distress response. Loop interruption. Adult questioning correction. Residual thread tracing. Observer route identification. Civilian extraction”

Tomonari added “Consent language distinction. Phrase as tool versus curse repetition. Report risk after”

Miyo said “Who watches the adults panic”

Daigo said “Who stops someone from forcing a child through a door because no answer sounds like no”

Hayato said “Who tells them maybe later is not yes does not mean maybe later is always safe”

The room went quiet.

Oda wrote that down.

Maybe later is not yes.

It also does not mean delay is always safe.

Hayato stared at it.

“I hate that”

Daigo said “Correct”

Hayato nodded.

“Correct hate”

Moriyama looked at the map.

“Functions needed on site:

  • adult field authority

  • field safety

  • phrase clarification

  • child communication

  • residual / curse anchor tracing

  • observer / panic route counting

  • physical extraction support if needed”

Akiha said “That is more than two students”

“Which is why no student observer model applies”

Tomonari said “Multi-role witness condition?”

Sayuri entered at the doorway before anyone called her.

That was becoming a family habit.

Haruto stood beside her.

Sayuri looked at the map.

“No. This is not access to the annex. Do not carry old door logic into a burning room because it sounds useful”

Everyone stilled.

She was right.

That hurt.

Tomonari lowered his eyes.

“Yes”

Sayuri’s voice softened by one degree.

“The principle may inform the choice. It does not own the mission”

Oda wrote:

Do not carry old door logic into a burning room because it sounds useful.

Daigo whispered “Families are terrifying”

Haruto looked at the report.

“Civilian children. Active curse. Missing inside”

His gaze moved to Rei.

Not asking.

Checking.

Rei nodded once.

Haruto said “Then help must be real”

Sayuri added “And named as cost”

Moriyama decided.

“I am taking Sawamura, Akiha, Rei, and Hayato”

Daigo stood.

“No”

Moriyama looked at him.

Daigo continued “If curse uses pressure, you need someone who can interrupt without sounding like a polite adult”

Sawamura said “That is true”

Daigo pointed at him.

“Do not help me”

Moriyama said “You are also a risk near civilian children if anger spikes”

Daigo’s mouth opened.

Closed.

He hated that she was right.

Akiha said “He can be outside perimeter disruption support”

Moriyama considered.

Daigo looked furious at perimeter.

Then less furious.

“What does that mean?”

Akiha said “You do not enter child rooms unless called. You manage adult rush, watcher routes, and physical pressure near exits. You are useful without becoming loud inside the child loop”

Daigo looked at her.

“That was insult and role”

“Yes”

He nodded.

“Accepted”

Tomonari said “I should go”

Moriyama shook her head.

“Not inside first wave”

Tomonari went still.

Daigo looked at him.

Tomonari’s voice stayed controlled.

“Because Kamo / teaching-mark access is not immediate?”

“Because the report shows no historical-mark language yet, and because if this becomes a phrase-contamination case, your formal analysis will be more useful after first containment. Also because I will not bring every incident-linked child because a report asked for consultants”

Tomonari breathed in.

Then out.

“Accepted”

It cost him.

Akiha saw it.

Daigo saw it.

Good.

Miyo said “I should not go inside”

Everyone looked at her.

She continued “If the site uses children repeating phrases and adults watching distress, a corner inside may become frightening. I can watch exterior movement”

Moriyama nodded.

“Outer watcher route with Daigo”

Miyo nodded.

“Accepted”

Hayato looked at her.

Then at Moriyama.

“I do not want to be the reason the phrase is safe”

Moriyama said “Good. That is not your role”

He swallowed.

“What is my role?”

Oda answered before Moriyama.

“Original user witness”

Hayato flinched.

Oda corrected.

“No. That is too clean”

She crossed it out.

Wrote:

Hayato role:

student who used the phrase under pressure and can tell when adults make it mean too much.

Not source.

Not proof.

Not cure.

Hayato read it.

Then nodded.

“Yes”

Rei’s role came last.

Moriyama looked at him.

“Residual tracing. Anchor identification only. No replacing field lead. No calculating rescue alone”

Rei nodded.

“Yes, Moriyama-sensei”

Daigo said “And if you start becoming committee?”

Rei looked at him.

“You stop me”

“Ugly words?”

“Yes”

“Good”

Akiha added “I tell him first if sight structure shifts”

Rei nodded.

Sawamura said “I will name when I need student input and when I am about to rely on it”

Moriyama looked at him.

“That better not be decorative”

“It will not be”

Daigo said “Suspicious but acceptable”

The mission record was drafted before departure.

Not because they had time.

The genuine version of this novel can be found on another site. Support the author by reading it there.

Because they did not.

Emergency Deployment — Kusunoki After-School House

Reason for student involvement:

Level 1 phrase involved in active civilian child curse incident.

Student roles:

Akiha Suda — observer / adult panic route / child-room response count

Mikage Rei — residual trace / anchor direction / no solo interpretation

Hayato Inoue — phrase meaning witness / adult overmeaning correction / not source, proof, or cure

Zenin Daigo — exterior pressure / adult rush interruption / no child-room entry unless called

Miyo — exterior watcher route / no vanishing pursuit

Kamo Tomonari — archive-side formal analysis / after-action phrase review

Adult roles:

Moriyama Keiko — field lead

Sawamura Tetsu — field safety support

Oda — archive record / remote route support

Known risk:

real child danger may pressure acceptance of “useful children” framing.

Counter:

help is real.

ownership is not.

Oda stamped it.

Hard.

Then they left.

The road to Kusunoki After-School House felt too ordinary for the report.

Kyoto morning had already begun. Shops opened. Bicycles moved along narrow streets. A woman swept dust from a storefront. Two boys argued over a sweet bun near a canal. Civilian life continued around jujutsu danger with the perfect cruelty of not knowing when to stop.

Rei rode in the second vehicle with Akiha and Hayato.

Moriyama and Sawamura rode ahead.

Daigo and Miyo followed separately with Okabe and two field assistants.

Hayato sat very still.

Akiha watched him without staring.

Rei looked at his own hands and tried not to imagine children repeating the phrase until their throats hurt.

Hayato spoke first.

“What if they say I caused it?”

Akiha answered.

“They may”

He closed his eyes.

“That was not comfort”

“No”

“Good”

Rei said “If they say it, we ask what caused means”

Hayato opened his eyes.

Rei continued “Phrase introduction. Curse attachment. Adult misuse. Emotional resonance. Report framing. Those are different”

Hayato nodded.

“Too many meanings”

“Yes”

Akiha said “Enough meaning first. Not all”

Hayato breathed.

“Enough”

The after-school house sat behind a low fence painted green.

Children’s drawings were taped inside the first-floor windows.

That was the worst part.

Crayon animals. Crooked suns. A smiling train. Names written in large, uneven characters. Ordinary paper that had nothing to do with archives and everything to do with children expecting adults to know what to do with their afternoons.

Two caretakers sat outside under a hastily placed ward curtain. One had a bandaged arm. The other was crying silently while a jujutsu assistant tried to make her drink water.

Three uniformed field workers held the perimeter.

A fourth stood near the front entrance, pale and sweating.

The building itself looked wrong only if one knew how rooms learned fear. The windows were intact. The doors were open. No black residue. No obvious curse body. No dramatic pressure.

But every few seconds, from the second floor, a chorus of small voices murmured:

“Maybe later is not yes”

Pause.

“Maybe later is not yes”

Pause.

“Maybe later is not yes”

Hayato stopped walking.

Daigo, from behind him, said quietly “Breathe”

Hayato did.

Barely.

The supervising sorcerer came to meet them. A woman in her forties, Grade 2, tired eyes, ash on one sleeve, name tag reading Nishida.

She bowed to Moriyama.

“Thank you for coming”

Moriyama said “Status”

Nishida pointed to the second floor.

“Three children inside the activity room. We can hear more than three voices. The door opens if no one asks a question. It closes if adults ask direct consent checks. Forced entry triggered paper-screen restraint. One caretaker injured. I have not attempted again”

Sawamura nodded.

“Good restraint”

Nishida looked like she hated needing the approval.

“Your phrase framework is involved”

Daigo, from the perimeter, said “Not hers”

Nishida blinked.

Moriyama said “He is exterior pressure support. Ignore tone. Hear content”

Daigo muttered “Best introduction ever”

Akiha stepped beside Moriyama.

“What happened before collapse?”

Nishida looked at the students.

Then at Moriyama.

Moriyama said “They have roles. Answer”

Nishida swallowed the instinct to question the children.

Good.

“Consent drill. Instructor used approved phrase cards. Children practiced saying yes, no, maybe later, I need help, I do not understand. One child refused to join a group activity. Caretaker accepted. Another child laughed and repeated maybe later is not yes. Then several children repeated it. Then the lights flickered. Then children who had been quiet began saying it too. Adults tried to redirect. The phrase intensified. Three children went upstairs. Door shut”

Hayato whispered “They were practicing”

Akiha said “The phrase started as play”

Rei looked at the building.

Residual cursed energy did not gather at the entrance. It gathered around the stairwell, the second-floor activity room, and strangely, the phrase cards scattered near the front classroom.

He named it.

“Residue on phrase cards, stairwell, second-floor activity room. Not all phrase cards. Mostly maybe later and I need help”

Hayato’s eyes widened.

“I need help too?”

Rei nodded.

“Yes”

Sawamura asked Nishida “Were children asked to choose cards?”

“Yes”

“Who prepared them?”

“Local instructor. From interim Level 1 pilot summary”

“Any modified cards?”

Nishida hesitated.

Akiha saw it.

“Modified how?”

Nishida looked toward the crying caretaker.

“One card was added by staff. Not from the summary”

Moriyama’s gaze sharpened.

“Text”

Nishida said “Maybe later means ask again kindly”

Hayato’s face changed.

Daigo said “No”

His voice was low enough not to carry into the building.

Nishida flinched anyway.

Akiha said “That card changes the phrase”

Hayato said “It makes maybe later into yes if the adult is nice enough”

Miyo, from the perimeter, said “Support pressure”

Tomonari was not there.

Rei wished he were.

Then corrected himself.

The wish was not wrong.

Turning it into guilt would be.

Rei looked at the building.

“The curse may not be attached to the original phrase. It may be attached to contradiction between maybe later is not yes and maybe later means ask again kindly”

Moriyama nodded.

“Nishida. Where is added card?”

Nishida pointed toward the first-floor classroom.

“Inside. Near the low table”

Sawamura said “We retrieve first?”

Moriyama looked at the second floor.

Voices repeated.

“Maybe later is not yes”

Then another voice.

Smaller.

“I need help”

Hayato’s head snapped up.

The whole field changed.

The repeated phrase continued.

“Maybe later is not yes”

“I need help”

“Maybe later is not yes”

“I need help”

A caretaker sobbed harder.

Nishida took a step toward the door.

Akiha said “Stop”

Nishida froze.

Akiha’s voice stayed clear.

“The building changed when help phrase entered. Adult rush pressure active”

Nishida looked like she wanted to hate that.

Could not.

Miyo called from the fence.

“Two adults at back gate moved when help phrase started”

Daigo said “I have them”

He did not shout.

Good.

He moved to intercept the back gate, not the front.

Useful.

Horribly useful.

Moriyama looked at Hayato.

“Phrase meaning”

Hayato swallowed.

“I need help should not force the nearest adult to rush in without asking what help means. But if a child says it, adult must respond”

Nishida looked at him.

“How?”

Hayato’s face went pale.

He was a child being asked how adults should respond to children.

Bad.

Real.

He said “Name the response without making them answer yes or no”

Moriyama nodded once.

Then stepped toward the building.

Her voice carried, firm but not sharp.

“We hear that help is needed. We are outside the room. We are not asking yes or no. We are making the hallway safer”

The voices stuttered.

The building creaked.

The second-floor chorus resumed, but softer.

“I need help”

“Maybe later is not yes”

“I need help”

Sawamura looked at Rei.

“Residue shift?”

Rei focused.

Carefully.

Not all.

Enough.

“Stairwell eased. Activity room still looped. First-floor card residue spiked when Moriyama-sensei answered”

Akiha said “The added card is anchor or route”

Moriyama said “First floor retrieval. Sawamura, Rei, Akiha. Hayato stays outside with me”

Hayato looked startled.

Then relieved.

Then guilty.

Akiha said “Relief allowed”

He nodded.

Daigo called from back gate “Two adults contained. They are upset. I am being polite and suffering”

Miyo said “He is not being polite”

Daigo said “I am being less violent than desired”

Moriyama said “Acceptable”

They entered.

The first floor smelled like crayons, tatami mats, spilled tea, and fear. The phrase cards lay scattered near a low table. Most were ordinary cardstock. The cursed residue clung to two.

MAYBE LATER IS NOT YES.

I NEED HELP.

And the staff-added card.

MAYBE LATER MEANS ASK AGAIN KINDLY.

The added card pulsed.

Rei felt the contradiction like a knot tied around a child’s refusal and an adult’s desire to be good.

“Anchor candidate” he said

Sawamura knelt.

“Do not touch”

“I know”

Akiha watched the room.

“Adult kindness route. The card lets adults feel refusal is not refusal if they remain gentle”

Sawamura exhaled.

“Wrong kind of help”

“Yes”

The staircase creaked.

A child’s voice from above whispered “Ask again kindly”

Then another.

“Maybe later is not yes”

Then a third.

“I need help”

Rei’s cursed energy tightened.

He saw too many lines.

The added card connected to the staircase. The staircase connected to the second-floor door. The door connected to something behind the activity room screen. Not a strong curse core. A folded thing. Paper and saliva and repeated phrases.

A child had probably touched the added card while afraid.

Maybe a child who wanted not to join.

Maybe a child who wanted help but not pressure.

Maybe a child who learned that kind adults could keep asking until maybe later broke.

Rei named only what he could.

“Added card links to second-floor door through repeated phrase residue. Possible curse anchor formed from contradiction. Need neutralization without making original phrases invalid”

Sawamura nodded.

“Akiha?”

“Room response says if we destroy all phrase cards, it may treat language itself as unsafe. We need remove altered meaning, not Level 1 phrase”

Sawamura looked at Rei.

“Can you isolate thread to added card?”

Rei breathed.

“Yes, but if I do, the activity room may react”

Akiha said “Name cost”

“Eye strain. Possible anchor pull. Risk of making me primary if thread responds”

Sawamura said “I will hold field safety. Akiha counts room response. Moriyama handles child phrase outside. You isolate only added card thread. Stop if second-floor voices shift toward your name or role”

Rei nodded.

“Yes”

He reached.

Residual Threading, public and plausible.

No System.

No hidden template.

Just enough precision to follow the cursed line wrapped around the added card, separate its meaning from the original phrase card beside it, and expose the point where kindly had become pressure.

The room breathed in.

Upstairs, the children stopped.

For one awful second.

Then a small voice said “Kindly”

Another answered “No”

The added card bent upward.

Sawamura dropped a containment tag over it.

Not sealing the original phrase cards.

Only the added one.

The tag smoked.

Akiha said “Second floor door opened one finger”

Sawamura said “Retreat?”

Rei felt the thread loosen.

“No. Stabilized”

Akiha said “Voices changed”

They listened.

From upstairs:

“Maybe later is not yes”

Pause.

“I need help”

Pause.

“No today is not never”

Hayato’s voice from outside, shaking but loud, answered.

“We hear no today is not never. We are making today safe first”

The building shuddered.

The activity room door opened another inch.

Akiha’s eyes widened.

“Hayato changed the loop”

Rei breathed.

Good.

Dangerous.

Useful.

Sawamura lifted the contained added card with tongs.

“Anchor removed from first floor. Not exorcised”

The second-floor door slammed shut.

Then a child screamed.

Not a loop.

A real scream.

Moriyama’s voice cut through the building.

“Status”

Akiha said “Real distress. Not phrase loop”

Sawamura looked at Rei.

“Anchor direction”

Rei followed the remaining thread.

“Behind activity room screen. Something folded with children. Not child. Low-grade curse body forming from phrase cards and old screen paper”

Sawamura nodded.

“Now upstairs”

They moved.

At the base of the stairs, Hayato stood outside with Moriyama. His face was pale, but he had not collapsed into the phrase.

Daigo held the back gate with Miyo beside him. Two adults stood there crying, angry, and not rushing. That was a victory no one had time to admire.

Moriyama looked at the group.

“Hayato?”

He swallowed.

“If children say maybe later, do not ask yes or no. Say what we are doing and give a small choice that is not the dangerous choice”

Sawamura said “Example”

Hayato closed his eyes.

Then opened them.

“We are outside the door. You can move away from the screen or stay where you are. You do not have to answer the door yet”

Moriyama nodded.

“You stay at stair base”

Hayato looked relieved and ashamed again.

Daigo called “Stop being guilty about not entering cursed child room”

Hayato flinched.

Then nodded.

“Okay”

“Temporary okay?”

“Yes”

“Good”

They climbed.

The second-floor corridor was narrow. Children’s bags hung from hooks. Small shoes were lined against the wall. A paper screen at the far end trembled as if something behind it breathed with too many mouths.

The activity room door was open one inch.

Inside, three children sat in the middle of the room, backs pressed together, eyes wide, hands over their ears. Behind the far screen, something folded and unfolded. A paper shape with too many small handprints and phrases written across its limbs.

Not strong.

Not harmless.

It whispered in adult voices.

“Ask again kindly”

“Maybe later”

“Be good”

“Use your words”

“No today is not never”

“Then tomorrow”

The curse had learned the phrases.

Not fully.

Enough to turn them.

Akiha said “It is using Level 1 as pressure sequence”

Sawamura said “How?”

Akiha pointed without entering.

“No today is not never becomes future pressure. Maybe later becomes scheduled yes. I need help becomes adult rush. Use your words becomes demand for correct phrase”

Moriyama’s jaw tightened.

“Then we do not argue phrases”

Rei said “Anchor body behind screen. Children between us and curse. If attacked directly, it may wrap them in paper”

Sawamura said “Options”

Rei almost answered all of them.

Akiha’s hand touched his sleeve.

He stopped.

Sawamura saw.

Good.

He asked again, differently.

“One option each. Fast”

Akiha said “Separate children from phrase demand by giving movement choice”

Rei said “Hold residue thread behind screen to prevent wrap”

Sawamura said “Containment tag on floor path”

Moriyama said “Voice response”

From the stair base, Hayato called up.

“Do not ask them to say the right phrase!”

Daigo shouted from below “Also do not let the paper thing become teacher!”

Moriyama said “Helpful. Loud”

Miyo’s voice followed, lower.

“Back window moved. Something outside watching second floor”

Akiha said “Watcher route active”

Moriyama said “Daigo and Miyo hold exterior. No pursuit”

Miyo answered “Accepted”

Daigo said “Angrily accepted”

Moriyama stepped to the doorway.

Her voice changed.

Not soft.

Not gentle.

Reliable.

“We are outside the room. You do not need to answer yes or no. You do not need the right words. You can move toward the blue mat or stay together. Both are allowed today”

One child sobbed.

Another whispered “Maybe later”

Moriyama answered “Maybe later heard. We are making the blue mat safer”

Sawamura slid a containment tag across the floor.

Akiha watched the children.

“They looked at mat”

Rei reached behind the screen.

The curse noticed.

Of course it did.

Paper limbs snapped toward the children.

Rei held the thread.

Not enough to reveal himself.

Enough to delay.

Yuji body wanted to move.

Nanami reinforcement wanted stability.

Kusakabe control held the output thin.

His head hurt instantly.

Akiha said “Cost”

“Headache. Thread hold. Stable”

Daigo’s voice from below “No hero nonsense!”

Rei almost smiled.

The children moved.

One step.

Two.

The smallest child crawled first toward the blue mat.

The other two followed.

The paper curse shrieked.

“Ask again kindly!”

Hayato’s voice from the stairwell shook.

“No”

Everyone froze.

Hayato continued.

“Kindly is not permission to keep asking”

The curse twisted.

The phrase hit it wrong.

Good wrong.

Sawamura threw the second tag.

Moriyama entered.

Fast.

Not rushing.

Controlled.

She placed herself between children and screen.

“Children clear”

Akiha said “One still within reach”

Rei pulled the thread sideways.

Pain flashed white.

The last paper limb missed the child’s ankle by one finger-width.

Sawamura cut the floor seal.

The containment tag flared.

Moriyama struck the screen with the baton.

Not breaking it.

Rejecting it.

“I reject this instruction”

The paper curse collapsed inward, folding around the altered card Sawamura carried. The two contradictions recognized each other and tore like wet paper under tension.

The curse tried one last phrase.

“Maybe later”

Hayato answered from the stairs.

“Maybe later is not yours”

The curse snapped.

Not exploded.

Snapped.

The paper body tore into thin scraps that fluttered down across the room.

For a second, nobody moved.

Then one child began crying loudly.

Real crying.

Human crying.

The best sound in the building.

Sawamura caught the smallest child before she fell.

Moriyama guided the others out.

Akiha counted them.

“Three children out”

Rei released the thread and almost swayed.

Akiha’s hand caught his sleeve.

“Cost”

“Headache. Nausea. No injury”

“Do not decide that alone”

“Headache. Nausea. Need adult check”

“Better”

Daigo appeared at the stair top despite having no permission to enter.

Then stopped before crossing into the activity room.

“Can I carry someone?”

Moriyama looked at the children.

Then at him.

“One child if they choose”

Daigo looked deeply uncomfortable.

Then crouched in the hallway.

“Anyone want to be carried by the loud person?”

The smallest child, still crying, reached for Sawamura instead.

Daigo nodded seriously.

“Excellent choice”

The older boy looked at Daigo.

“You are loud?”

“Yes”

“Can you walk in front?”

Daigo blinked.

Then nodded.

“I can do that”

He walked in front.

Not carrying.

Useful anyway.

Hayato sat on the stairs as the children passed.

One of them looked at him.

“You said no”

Hayato froze.

Then nodded.

“Yes”

The child said “Good”

Hayato looked like the word had struck him directly in the chest.

Daigo, from the front, said “Correct good!”

The child yelled “Good!”

For the first time that day, several adults laughed.

Not because it was funny enough.

Because they needed to become human again before writing reports.

Outside, the caretakers reached for the children.

Moriyama stopped the first rush with one raised hand.

“Ask before touching”

The injured caretaker sobbed.

Then crouched.

“Can I hug you?”

The child said “Maybe later”

The caretaker flinched.

Hayato stepped forward.

Not too close.

“Maybe later is not yes. It is also not hate”

The caretaker cried harder.

“Okay”

The child hesitated.

Then leaned into her anyway.

Not because asked again.

Because she chose.

Rei looked away.

Some things were too much when adrenaline ended.

Miyo stood near the back fence.

Her eyes were on the roof across the lane.

Akiha approached.

“Watcher?”

“Gone”

“Person?”

“Maybe. Maybe charm. Movement stopped when curse snapped”

Akiha nodded.

“Report as unresolved”

“Yes”

Nishida approached Moriyama.

Her face was exhausted.

“I called for incident-linked student consultants”

Daigo’s head turned.

Nishida continued before anyone spoke.

“That was wrong”

The field quieted.

She looked at Hayato.

Then at Rei.

Then at Akiha.

Then the others.

“I needed functions. I asked for children as if the functions belonged to the label”

Oda was not there to write it.

Akiha was.

She wrote.

Nishida field correction:

Needed functions.

Requested children as label.

Correction acknowledged on site.

Nishida looked at the note.

“Include it”

Akiha nodded.

“Yes”

Sawamura asked “Do you still need support?”

Nishida exhaled.

“Yes”

“Name function”

“After-action phrase handling. Caretaker correction. Report language. Civilian child follow-up”

Moriyama nodded.

“We provide framework. Not incident-linked children as continuing consultants”

Nishida nodded.

“Accepted”

Hayato whispered “Thank you”

Nishida looked at him.

“I am sorry”

Hayato looked terrified.

Then steadier.

“Accurate regret or apology asking something?”

Nishida blinked.

Daigo whispered “Holy hell”

Nishida said slowly “Accurate regret. And apology. I do not ask forgiveness. I will accept correction to report”

Hayato nodded.

“Okay”

Temporary okay.

Good.

The field report was written before they left.

Not perfect.

Enough.

Kusunoki After-School House — Initial Field Report

Curse formed around contradiction between approved Level 1 phrase and locally added phrase card:

“Maybe later means ask again kindly”

Primary distortion:

Level 1 consent language turned into adult pressure loop.

Affected phrases:

- maybe later is not yes

- I need help

- no today is not never

- use your words

Key correction:

Phrases are not commands for children to perform correct refusal.

They are tools to prevent adults from owning uncertainty.

Exorcism sequence:

- adult rush pressure identified

- altered phrase card isolated

- children given movement choice without yes/no demand

- curse anchor held and contained

- screen instruction rejected

- phrase ownership corrected:

“Maybe later is not yours”

Student involvement:

Functions requested by field need.

Incident-linked label rejected after correction.

Hayato read the line Maybe later is not yours.

He said nothing.

Then asked for a copy.

Moriyama said “Yes”

On the ride back, nobody pretended they had won cleanly.

Three children had been rescued.

Two adults were injured.

One phrase had been used wrongly.

One curse had fed on adult kindness becoming pressure.

Hayato had been useful.

Rei had been useful.

Akiha had been useful.

Daigo had been useful.

Miyo had been useful.

Sawamura had been useful.

Moriyama had been necessary.

That was the shape of the new problem.

At the archive, Oda read the report.

Then looked at them.

“The first mission of the new arc”

Daigo groaned.

“Do not say arc after child rescue”

Oda said “Records do not wait until events become tasteful”

She wrote the title.

The Shape of Useful Children — Mission One

No one objected.

They were too tired.

The letter to Satoru was short because anything longer would have become performance.

Satoru,

First real mission after Enough Language.

Civilian after-school house.

Level 1 phrase involved.

Curse formed around wrong added card:“Maybe later means ask again kindly”

Children trapped.

We went because functions were needed.

The field request asked for incident-linked student consultants.

We rejected the label and took roles.

Children survived.

Phrase corrected:“Maybe later is not yours”

This was real help.

It was also the useful children route.

Rei

Hayato added:

I was useful.

I do not know what to do with that yet.

Daigo added:

Being useful feels like a trap even when children are alive.

This is disgusting.

Akiha added:

Enough Language worked.

Enough Language was also used wrong.

Both must travel.

Tomonari added from archive-side after-action review:

The wrong added card proves that Level 1 requires adult misuse records immediately, not after harm.

Miyo added:

A watcher moved outside.

Unresolved.

Sawamura, after asking permission and being told by Daigo that asking made it worse but not asking would be worse-worse, added:

Replacement function note:I did not replace Kitahara.I was useful anyway. This must remain uncomfortable.

Oda allowed that line to travel.

Satoru’s answer came late.

Only one page.

Rei and room,

Real children survived.

That matters first.

It does not erase the useful children route.

That matters second.

Do not reverse the order because guilt wants to look sophisticated.

Satoru

Rei read that line twice.

Do not reverse the order because guilt wants to look sophisticated.

Akiha saw him read it.

Daigo said “Tokyo menace got that one right”

The letter continued.

Hayato:You were useful.Do not solve that today.

Daigo:Being useful feels like a trap because sometimes it is.Today it also helped children live.Disgusting.True.

Akiha:If Enough Language worked and failed in the same mission, the report must carry both or it becomes propaganda.

Tomonari:Adult misuse records immediately. Correct.

Miyo:Unresolved watcher outside child site is not decorative. Keep it ugly.

Sawamura:Useful anyway while not replacing Kitahara is the least offensive thing you could have written.Continue provisional discomfort.

Rei:Maybe later is not yours.Good line.Dangerous line.Yours? Hayato’s? The room’s? The child’s?Do not answer too fast.

The vow did not pull.

Satoru

Hayato stared at the question about the line.

“Maybe later is not yours”

He looked at Rei.

Then down.

“I said the first phrase”

Rei nodded.

“Yes”

“You said the room is not contagious”

“Yes”

“Moriyama-sensei said we hear help”

“Yes”

“The child said good”

Daigo said “Correct good child”

Hayato breathed.

“Maybe the line belongs to the mission”

Oda looked pleased in the worst possible way.

She wrote:

Some lines belong to the mission.

Do not assign ownership too quickly.

The System opened that night.

Rei expected the message.

He did not expect the first line.

[Real Mission event processed]

Outcome:

Three civilian children rescued.

Two adults injured.

Curse exorcised.

Level 1 phrase preserved with correction.

Primary hostile route:

useful children request under emergency pressure

Secondary route:

adult kindness transformed into repeated consent pressure

Key distortion:

“Maybe later means ask again kindly”

Key correction:

“Maybe later is not yours”

A second message appeared.

[Useful Children principle registered]

Usefulness is not ownership.

Refusing ownership does not require refusing usefulness.

Warning:

Future missions may increase reliance on cohort functions because reliance produced survival.

Rei closed his eyes.

There it was.

The true beginning.

A third message.

[Surrounding Structure update]

Enough Language field-tested.

Results:

- Level 1 prevented adult yes/no escalation

- adult misuse created curse-compatible contradiction

- Hayato function valuable under phrase distortion

- Akiha observer function valuable under adult rush pressure

- Rei trace function valuable under anchor separation

- Daigo exterior pressure function valuable under adult rush containment

- Miyo watcher function identified unresolved exterior movement

- Sawamura provisional function advanced without replacing Kitahara

Risk:

Success strengthens useful children route.

No extraction.

Of course.

[No extraction issued]

Current progress:

real mission survival / usefulness without ownership / adult misuse record requirement

Continue surviving consequence.

Rei wrote the mission line in his notebook.

Usefulness is not ownership.

Refusing ownership does not require refusing usefulness.

This is harder than hiding.

He stamped it.

Plain.

The mark came out clean.

He stared.

Then left it.

Sometimes clean was not the enemy.

Sometimes it was only honest before the next hand touched it.

Far away, the unknown reader received the Kusunoki report by midnight.

Three children rescued.

Wrong card identified.

Enough Language preserved.

Useful children route confirmed.

The gloved hand rested on:

Usefulness is not ownership.

Refusing ownership does not require refusing usefulness.

The reader did not have the System line.

But the field report had learned close enough.

The brush moved.

First mission:

children lived.

Useful children route strengthened.

They will accept use when refusal risks lives.

They will resist ownership afterward.

A pause.

Then:

Next pressure:

make ownership appear after usefulness, not before.

The reader opened the unresolved watcher note.

Miyo’s line.

Outside movement.

Not decorative.

A new sheet was placed beneath The Shape of Useful Children.

Mission Two:

Let someone thank them publicly.

The brush stopped.

Then added:

Praise is a cleaner chain than orders.

The sheet was folded.

The children had survived being useful once.

That meant the next trap could smile.
