The thank-you note arrived with flowers.
Daigo mistrusted the flowers first.
That was probably excessive.
It was also not wrong.
The bouquet sat in the middle of Oda’s archive table, wrapped in pale paper and tied with a yellow ribbon that looked exactly like the kind of thing adults chose when they wanted gratitude to become uncomplicated. Small white blossoms. Three folded paper cranes. One card written in careful adult handwriting and signed beneath by several uneven child names.
The names made it harder to hate.
That was the trap.
Daigo stood at the table with both arms folded.
"No"
Oda looked at him over her glasses.
"To the flowers?"
"To everything around the flowers"
Akiha stood beside the table, reading the card without touching it. Tomonari had already taken out paper. Miyo stood near the west shelf, not the window today, watching the ribbon instead of the blossoms. Hayato sat farther back than usual, because the card was from Kusunoki After-School House and his name appeared twice inside it. Rei stood beside Moriyama and tried not to think about the smallest child looking at Hayato after the exorcism and saying good.
Sawamura, still provisional in ways Daigo resented and Oda preserved, leaned slightly closer to the bouquet.
"It does not appear cursed"
Daigo looked at him.
"That is exactly what cursed flowers want you to say"
Sawamura considered.
"Fair"
Oda wrote:
Flowers not apparently cursed.
Daigo objection remains spiritually admissible.
Tomonari closed his eyes.
"I cannot believe that sentence now exists"
"It was necessary" Oda said
"It was absolutely not"
The card read:
To the Kyoto students and teachers who helped us,
Thank you for saving our children.
Thank you for teaching us that asking kindly is not the same as listening.
Thank you for helping the children use their words without making the words a cage.
The children wanted to send flowers.
Kusunoki After-School House
Below the adult handwriting, three children had added their names.
One had drawn a blue mat.
One had drawn a large person walking in front of smaller people.
Daigo stared at that drawing for a long time.
No one said anything about it.
Then Hayato whispered "That one is you"
Daigo scowled.
"I noticed"
"It is nice"
"That is the problem"
Akiha looked at the final line again.
"The children wanted to send flowers"
Miyo said "The adults wrote the frame. The children added marks"
Tomonari said "Gratitude route"
Oda placed a blank tag beside the bouquet.
GRATITUDE ROUTE
Kindness can carry ownership pressure without intending harm.
Hayato looked at the flowers.
"Do we accept them?"
That question should have been simple.
It was not.
If they refused, they made gratitude unsafe. If they accepted too cleanly, the flowers became proof that being useful could be repaid by warmth and therefore should be repeated. If they sent them back, the children might think they had done something wrong. If they kept them without record, the adults could use the gesture later as a soft chain. If they recorded too much, the children’s kindness became evidence.
Rei hated that the flowers deserved better than analysis.
He hated more that analysis was necessary.
Moriyama asked "What are the flowers doing?"
Daigo said "Making it harder to be angry"
Oda wrote that down.
Daigo pointed.
"That was not for the archive"
"Most true things are not offered voluntarily"
Akiha said "They are also separating the children’s gratitude from the adult frame. The drawings matter"
Miyo said "The ribbon matters too"
Hayato looked at the yellow ribbon.
"Why?"
Miyo answered "Because it makes the whole thing one object"
Tomonari nodded.
"If we accept the flowers, card, drawings, and adult wording together, we may accept the frame together"
Sawamura said "Then separate receipt"
Daigo narrowed his eyes.
"Stop being useful"
Sawamura did not answer.

He nodded.

"Accept the children’s thanks. Accept the flowers as a gesture. Record that acceptance is not consent to future use, public naming, or incident-linked student consultant framing"
Daigo said "And no ceremony"
Everyone looked at him.
He stared back.
"What? There is obviously a ceremony hiding behind these flowers"
As if summoned by the accusation, a second messenger arrived five minutes later.
No one looked surprised.
Daigo pointed at the door.
"See?"
The messenger was not from Kusunoki. He wore municipal office gray, carried a stiff envelope, and had the careful smile of someone delivering a pleasant thing that had already been approved without asking the people who would have to survive it.
Oda looked at Daigo.
"Spiritually admissible upgraded"
Daigo looked vindicated.
The municipal envelope contained a formal invitation.
Kusunoki Children’s Safety Appreciation Gathering

The unknown reader’s next move had arrived smiling, scented with flowers, and signed by children who had genuinely wanted to say thank you.

Daigo looked betrayed.
"Why not?"
"Because real children may want closure"

Not comfortably.

Hayato stared at the invitation.
"If we do not go, will they think we did not want the flowers?"
Moriyama said "Maybe"
"If we go, will they call us brave?"
"Probably"
He closed his eyes.
"I do not want that"
Akiha asked "Which part?"
Hayato opened his eyes.
"Being called brave for saying words because I was scared"
Daigo said "That is what brave usually is"
Hayato looked at him.
Daigo looked away.
"Still hate the ceremony"
Tomonari said "Recognition of student bravery may make useful children route softer. Instead of asking for consultants, it thanks contributors"
Miyo said "Then later refusing looks ungrateful"
Oda wrote:

"Children’s closure. Caretaker correction. Public statement preventing misuse of Level 1. Preventing phrase blame. Preventing us becoming symbolic consultants"

Miyo said "Watching who wants photographs"
Everyone looked at her.
She said "There will be photographs"
Daigo said "Absolutely no"
Moriyama looked at the municipal messenger, still waiting near the door.
"Are photographs planned?"
The messenger hesitated.
That was answer enough.
"Possibly a small record photograph"
Daigo said "No"
This time, Moriyama did not correct him.
Akiha said "Record photograph of what?"
The messenger looked increasingly like he regretted mornings.
"The children with the Kyoto helpers"
Miyo said "Helpers"
Tomonari said "A category that sounds harmless and travels everywhere"
Hayato whispered "If my face is there, the phrase gets a face"
Silence.
That line was enough.
Oda wrote:
If the phrase gets a face, future misuse can find the child.
Moriyama turned to the messenger.
"Kyoto does not accept photography of involved students"
The messenger bowed quickly.
"I can relay that"
"Relay more. Kyoto may consider attendance under corrected frame. No student photographs. No recognition of student bravery as category. No naming incident-linked students as contributors in public program. Handmade cards may be received privately or in small room. Safe consent language statement by adult instructor only, with student-approved wording if relevant"
The messenger blinked.
"That is quite different from the proposed program"
Oda said "Correct"
The messenger looked at Oda, then wisely looked back at Moriyama.
"I will relay"
"Visible route" Akiha said
The messenger paused.
"Excuse me?"
Akiha said "Who receives your relay?"
"Municipal education contact. Kusunoki supervisor. Kyoto instructional office"
"Names"
He provided them.

Daigo looked at the signature.
"Kyoto Instructional Review Room?"
Oda said "No student names"
"It sounds like furniture wrote it"
"Good"
Miyo said "Furniture is harder to exploit emotionally"
Tomonari looked pained.
"That is not a principle"
Oda wrote it anyway.
The corrected invitation returned at midday.
Too fast.
Again.
This time the frame had improved.
That made it harder.

Akiha said "Now refusal is harder because the frame is less bad"
Miyo said "That may be intentional or learning"

Hayato read the corrected proposal.
"Closure visit"
Moriyama looked at him.
"You do not have to attend"
"I know"
"Do you?"
He thought.
"No. But I am trying to"
Akiha said "What do you want?"
Hayato stared at the paper.
"I want to know if the children are okay"
No one spoke.
He continued.
"I do not want cards. I do not want bravery. I do not want them to say good again"
Daigo looked down.
Hayato said "But I want to know"
Akiha nodded.
"That is a real want"
Miyo said "Real wants are easier to buy"
Hayato nodded.
"Yes"
Rei felt the mission’s residue come back in flashes. The staircase. The voices. The child saying good. The caretaker asking before hugging. The paper curse snapping around a phrase that had been meant to protect.
He did not want the closure visit.
He also did.
That was the problem with survival after missions.
You did not only carry what went wrong.
You carried the faces of people who were alive because you went.
Moriyama asked each person separately.
Akiha chose to attend as observer with no public thanks.
Daigo chose to attend only exterior, to avoid child-room praise, and because one child had asked him to walk in front and he needed to see if the boy was alive and annoying.
Tomonari chose not to attend, and to work archive-side on misuse record language. He said it calmly. It cost him less than the annex deferral had, but not nothing.
Miyo chose to attend exterior and watch the adults watching gratitude.
Hayato chose to attend the private card room for no more than ten minutes, with permission to leave without explanation.
Rei chose to attend because residual aftereffects might still be present and because not attending would make him imagine worse things than truth.
Oda chose not to attend.
"The archive does not receive flowers in person"
Daigo said "You are afraid of children"
Oda looked at him.
"Children are improperly filed chaos"
"That is yes"
"Yes"
The closure visit was scheduled for the next morning.
That night, Rei told Haruto and Sayuri.
Haruto listened without interrupting.
Sayuri poured tea and did not make it a comfort object by placing it too close.
When Rei finished, Haruto said "Praise makes debt feel voluntary"
Rei nodded.
"Yes"
Sayuri said "Gratitude is not the enemy"
"I know"
"No. You distrust gratitude because traps are wearing it. That is sensible. But if you become unable to receive it, traps win differently"
Rei looked at her.
She continued "Children thanking you is not ownership. Adults arranging what the thanks means may be"
He breathed.
"How do I receive it?"
Haruto answered "Badly at first"
Rei almost smiled.
Sayuri said "Honestly enough that the child is not punished for offering"
That stayed with him.
The next morning, Kusunoki After-School House looked less cursed and more wounded.
That was not the same as safe.
The green fence had been repaired with new rope. Two windows were open. The first-floor classroom had been cleaned, but one corner remained bare where the phrase cards had been. A blue mat sat near the wall. The children had drawn new pictures and taped them over the old ones.
Moriyama led the Kyoto group.
Sawamura walked beside her.
Akiha and Rei followed.
Hayato walked between them but slightly behind, by choice.
Daigo stayed outside the front gate with Miyo. He had claimed exterior role. Miyo had said "also escape route" and he had said "do not make me sound thoughtful"
The Kusunoki supervisor met them at the door.
Nishida was there too, the field sorcerer from the mission, looking tired but steadier.
The caretakers bowed.
One of them began to say "thank you for your bravery"
Then stopped.
Looked at the paper in her hands.
Corrected.
"Thank you for coming back"
Hayato breathed out.
Akiha noticed.
Good.
Moriyama said "Thank you for correcting the frame"
The caretaker nodded, eyes wet.
"We practiced"
Daigo, from outside, muttered "Good"
Miyo said "You are not inside"
"I am spiritually objecting"
The private card room had six children in it, not three.
The rescued children and three others who had been present during the consent drill. All sat on floor cushions around a low table. Cards lay in front of them. No flowers. No photographer. No municipal official inside the room.
Good.
A boy with cropped hair looked at Daigo through the window and waved.
Daigo froze.
Miyo said "Exterior role"
"I know"
The boy waved harder.
Daigo lifted one hand very slightly.
The boy grinned.
Daigo looked away like he had been attacked.
Inside, the smallest girl from the activity room held a card with both hands.
She looked at Hayato.
Hayato stopped breathing.
Akiha murmured "You can leave"
He shook his head.
The girl said "You said no"
Hayato nodded.
"Yes"
She held out the card.
It showed a staircase, a blue mat, and a speech bubble.
NO IS A WORD TOO.
Hayato stared.
No one corrected the grammar.
No one improved the child’s lesson.
He took the card with both hands.
"Thank you"
The girl said "You are welcome"
Then she looked worried.
"Is thank you a chain?"
Hayato’s eyes widened.
Every adult in the room went still.
This was what happened when adults corrected too much near children.
The child had heard the warning.
Now gratitude itself had become suspect.
Rei felt his chest tighten.
Hayato looked panicked.
Then, slowly, he crouched so he was closer to her height.
"No. Thank you is not a chain by itself"
The girl frowned.
"When is it?"
Hayato looked at Moriyama.
Moriyama did not answer.
Good.
Hayato said "If someone says thank you and then says now you have to do what they want"
The girl thought.
"I do not want you to do something"
"Then it is just thank you"
She nodded.
"Thank you"
Hayato breathed.
"Thank you for the card"
Akiha looked away for one second.
Not because she was hiding.
Because some moments deserved not being observed too hard.
The boy who had waved at Daigo held up his drawing.
It showed a very large figure at the front of a hallway, mouth open, hair spiky in a way that was not accurate but emotionally correct. Behind him were three smaller children.
The boy called toward the window "Loud person!"
Daigo closed his eyes.
"Absolutely not"
The boy pressed the drawing against the glass.
"Walking front!"
Daigo looked at Moriyama through the window.
Moriyama said nothing.
Miyo said "Release after bite"
Daigo glared at her.
Then stepped closer to the window but did not enter the room.
"I walked in front once"
The boy nodded.
"You can walk in front again if scary"
Daigo’s face changed.
Not much.
Enough.
"Maybe"
The boy frowned.
"Maybe later is not yes"
Daigo stared.
Then said "Correct"
The boy grinned.
"No today is not never"
Daigo looked like someone had handed him a live explosive made of feelings.
"Also correct"
Miyo watched the exchange.
Not smiling.
Almost.
Akiha received no card at first.
That was fine.
Then one of the older girls approached her with folded paper.
"I drew the room"
Akiha took it.
The drawing showed the activity room with many eyes around it, some big, some small, some outside the window.
Akiha looked at the child.
"Why eyes?"
The girl shrugged.
"Because everyone was looking and then teacher said not all looking is helping"
Akiha’s hand tightened.
"That is true"
The girl pointed to one eye near the door.
"That one asks before looking"
Akiha swallowed.
"Good"
Then corrected.
"Human good"
The girl nodded seriously, as if that distinction made perfect sense.
Rei received a card from no child.
At first, he was relieved.
Then ashamed of relief.
Then Akiha glanced at him and he stopped turning shame into motion.
Good.
The child with the blue mat looked at him last.
"You found the bad card"
Rei nodded.
"Yes"
She did not hand him anything.
She asked "Will cards be bad again?"
The room quieted.
Rei crouched too.
"Cards can be used badly. That does not make all cards bad"
She frowned.
"Words too?"
"Words too"
"Adults too?"
That one hurt.
"Adults too"
She nodded like this confirmed a theory she did not like.
Then she gave him a small piece of paper.
It was blank except for one blue square.
"What is it?" he asked
"Safe first"
Rei’s throat tightened.
He took it.
"Thank you"
She looked suspicious.
"Chain?"
"No"
"Okay"
The visit lasted eight minutes.
Hayato left at seven.
Not because he broke.
Because he had chosen ten as maximum and realized seven was enough.
Akiha left with him.
Rei stayed one more minute for residual check.
Moriyama gave the adult statement outside, not in front of the children.
Nishida, the caretakers, municipal contact, and local instructor listened.
Moriyama’s statement was short.
"Level 1 language did not cause the curse. Misuse and contradiction created pressure the curse used. The phrase maybe later is not yes remains valid. It does not mean delay is always safe. It does not mean adults should withdraw care. It means uncertainty is not consent. Adults remain responsible for making choices safer without owning the child’s answer"
The local instructor cried.
No one comforted her too quickly.
Nishida said "We will preserve the misuse record"
Moriyama nodded.
"Good"
Then corrected herself.
"Correct"
Daigo whispered from the gate "Growth is disgusting"
Miyo said "You are using the phrase correctly"
"That is also disgusting"
Before they left, the municipal contact tried one last time.
Not maliciously.
That was the hard part.
"We would still like some form of acknowledgment for the student helpers. No names. No photographs. Perhaps a plaque inside the staff room"
Daigo’s expression turned murderous from across the yard.
Akiha said "Text?"
The municipal contact unfolded a draft.
In gratitude to the young Kyoto helpers whose bravery protected our children and taught us safer words.
Hayato, who had returned to the gate but not the room, closed his eyes.
Akiha said "No"
The municipal contact looked startled.
Akiha continued "Bravery protected our children makes the children into heroes. Taught us safer words makes the words come from them. Both are wrong"
The contact flushed.
"I am sorry"
Akiha nodded.
"Accurate regret or revision?"
The man blinked.
"Revision"
Daigo whispered "Holy hell, she got a civilian"
Moriyama did not smile.
Akiha took the brush.

She handed it back.
"No Kyoto student reference"
The municipal contact read it.
Then bowed.

Hayato looked at the line.

Akiha said "Does that work?"
He nodded.
"Yes"
The ride back was quiet.
Not bad quiet.
Tired quiet.
Daigo held the drawing from the boy like it had personally offended him by existing.
Hayato held his card.
Rei held the blue square.
Akiha held the room drawing.
Miyo held nothing.
That was her choice.
At the archive, Oda received the cards.
Not as evidence.
Not as praise.

"You may keep the original if you want. The archive can keep a record copy"
Hayato stared.
"The archive does not have to take the original?"
Oda looked offended.
"The archive is not a dragon"
Daigo whispered "Debatable"
Hayato took the original card.
That mattered.
Rei placed the blue square down.
Then picked it up again.
"I want to keep it"
Oda nodded.
"Record copy"
Rei nodded.
The flowers remained in the archive until evening.
Then Oda divided them.
One blossom for the archive record.
One sent to Moriyama’s office.
One sent to Sawamura with a tag that said provisional does not mean flowerless because Daigo had made the mistake of saying that out loud.
Several were sent back to Kusunoki with the response.
The rest were placed in water near the window.
Not centerpiece.
Not shrine.
Just flowers.
The report to Satoru took two pages.
