Flinx handed his gold rank Adventurer Guild card that he had been calling a token simply because it has hole in it that let people use the cards as medallions to the pretty guild receptionist.
“My name is Ara,” The pretty receptionist said.
The lady tapped Flinx’s card in the crystal ball that looked like one of those cheap fortune-telling crystal balls used by scammers back on Earth, and started reading the information in it.
“Sir Flinx, Sir Norban, the guild master in Beldor Town, noted in your file that you’re qualified to undergo the test to increase your rank to either the Diamond or even the Platinum rank. He mentioned that based on your need, you’re actually asking it be done as soon as you’re in a branch with a master capable of testing you, is that right?” The pretty receptionist said.
Flinx was startled. He did tell Norban that he wanted to go to a place where there was a high-level dungeon, since killing high-level dungeon monsters was the best way for him to increase his power, and increasing his power was the only way for him to return to his homeland as soon as possible. He thought that having a gold rank would be enough, but since Norban indicated in his file that he might need to delve into higher-level dungeons to reach his goal, he should just agree with what Norban had written in his file and undergo the rank-up test.
“Yes, I would like to do the test.”
“The cost of the Diamond rank-up test is 500 gold coins, and the Platinum rank-up test is 1000 gold coins. Would you like to do the test today?”
Flinx was flabbergasted. He only had 1,320 gold coins left. He thought that amount was enough for him to last a while, at least until he received materials from dungeon monsters that he could sell for coins. He calmed down, though, since it was easy for him to acquire gold coins. His System Shopping site would allow him to acquire items that he could sell for coins.
“What happens if I fail the test? For example, if I directly take the Platinum test and I fail?”
“Nothing much. You’ll just forfeit your coins. You can even try the test again if you want, as long as you have the coins and you don’t mind losing them.”
Basically, what the receptionist said was that it was fine for the guild to take the coins of foolish young adventurers who thought their capabilities were prodigious enough that they would undertake the test even if they were not ready yet. If they’re actually powerful enough to become a Diamond Rank adventurer, then the guild would have another high-ranking adventurer in their roster. If they failed, then it would be a lesson that would only cost coins and not life.
“I would like to take the Diamond Rank up test, please,” Flinx said after a couple of minutes of thinking.
He didn’t want to bite off more than he could chew. If he found out that the dungeons that were ranked by the Adventurer Guild as Diamond and the level of monsters inside were still not enough, then he would undertake the Platinum rank-up test.
“That’ll be 500 gold coins, please,” The pretty receptionist said.
Flinx handed the girl 500 gold coins. His coin funds shrank to 820 gold coins. His conversation with the Ara was not discreet, so everyone who was nearby heard their conversation. The four street rats looked at him with their mouths wide open, and even the other adventurers were looking at him disbelievingly. Some had disdain on their faces, thinking that Flinx was probably going to humiliate himself and fail the rank-up test.
After the receptionist received Flinx’s coin, she did something on her crystal ball.
“I called a master to test you and received a reply that he’ll be here in a few minutes.”
“So fast?!”
“Diamond rank-up tests are rare, and Master Semanor is curious. He’s a powerful shield warrior, so prepare yourself. You can sit there to wait,” Ara said, then she pointed at the chairs located by the side.
Flinx thanked the girl and headed to the chairs, followed by the four kids who resembled puppies following their master.
“You’re very rich, Flinx! You just handed a fortune to that pretty lady without any worries!” Runt said to him once they were seated.
“Fool! Of course, Flinx is rich. He easily conjured these clothes and shoes for us. He probably conjured those coins,” Kid said.
“Hey! I didn’t conjure those coins. When I arrived here from my homeland, I had a bunch of pure white salt with me and sold it all for a thousand gold coins. I also didn’t actually conjure the clothes that I gave to you four. I just had them in my storage magic space.”
Flinx was a little startled when Runt and the Kid used his name. He didn’t remember saying his name to them, but then he remembered introducing himself to those two Iron rank adventurers, and Runt had overheard that conversation.
While Runt and Kid started to bicker with each other, with Dirt and Flea joining in, Flinx observed the first floor of this Adventurer Guild branch. From the outside, it looked like it was four stories tall, and the area was huge. The first floor was divided into different sections. One area was where the receptionist and their counters were located. Another area was reserved for what looked like the mission boards or something. Flinx could see posts that were placed on those boards that the adventurers were reviewing. He saw that if a group of adventurers found a mission they liked, they would not touch the posters but instead, head to the receptionist area to request to take the mission.
Another section of the first floor of this branch consisted of tables and chairs where several groups of adventurers were lounging about. Flinx then noticed that several people were observing him.
Camryn and Oliman told him that wizards were sought after by adventurer groups, and once a group managed to secure a magic caster, they would almost instantly become famous. He expected those people to approach, but more than likely, they were waiting for the results of his rank-up test. He knew that if he was successful in making up to Diamond, most of the people observing him would not approach him anymore, since a Diamond Rank adventurer, and a magic caster at that, would be too powerful for common adventurer groups.
After waiting for around 10 minutes, Flinx saw Ara approaching him with a powerful-looking man beside her. The man was wearing an honest-to-goodness full suit of armor with a helmet. The man looked extremely familiar, or at least the suit of armor was. Then Flinx remembered that it resembled the suit of armor that the protagonist from the anime Goblin Slayer wore.
There was a huge sword by the man’s side and a large shield slung over the warrior's back. The four orphans by Flinx’s side turned silent when they saw the man, and Flinx couldn’t fault them. The warrior looked highly intimidating.
“Flinx, this is Sir Semanor. He’s a Platinum rank Shield Warrior that would test you for your Diamond Rank up test,” Ara introduced the intimidating man to Flinx, then promptly left.
“Norban wrote in your file your need to for powerful dungeon monsters and that you’ve already fulfilled the number of powerful monsters that you’ve defeated to undergo the test. Follow me, and I’ll test you. I’ll give you the rank if you pass my test. Do you want these kids to watch me beat you?” The man asked, then laughed heartily.
