Dungeon Miner Slave

DMS Chapter 62

DMS Chapter 62

Flinx saw that Runt, Kid, Dirt, and Flea became extremely excited when they heard that they could watch him battling the powerful-looking shield warrior as his test to rank up to the Diamond Rank.

“Sure, they can watch,” Flinx told Semanor.

“If you want, we can open the training room to the public for a fee. Seventy-five percent of the proceeds would go to you,” Semanor advised.

Flinx thought about it for a minute and told Semanor to go ahead and open the test to the public. He thought that the coins he would receive from the audience would be great. He would not deny free money. Even if he lost and did not pass the test, at least it would offset the coins that he had paid to undergo the test.

“Normally, adventurers would not be interested in watching veteran adventurers beating those who thought that their abilities were enough to rank up, but since you’re a magic caster, many people would be interested in seeing your magical capabilities. You might even earn more than the amount that you paid for the test,” Semanor said.

Flinx nodded his understanding, and the four kids who were following him became extremely excited. The issue was that he needed to wait for a couple more hours before the test would start, so that the guild could send the news that a powerful spell caster had opened his ranking up test battle to the public.

After deciding to open his rank-up test to the public, the guild started a flurry of activity. Everyone started rushing outside to spread the news.

At first, all the hullabaloo in the guild branch made Flinx nervous, but then again, he needed this type of situation. He needed to learn to battle under pressure. His fight against the guild master Norban gave him an inkling of what he was capable of. What he truly needed was experience, and that meant more battle under pressure.

He didn’t know how powerful a Platinum Rank adventurer was, but he would try his best using all of his spells. While he was traveling with the merchant caravan, he thought of his battle against Norban and devised different strategies that would allow him to defeat the guild master.

The fact was, the fight against Norban was too short, and he hadn’t actually seen the full scope of Norban’s skills. The guild master assured him that if it came to a true life and death battle, Norban was confident in defeating Flinx, and he believed that. Norban had decades of experience in battle, and Flinx just had a few weeks. His years as a dungeon miner slave didn’t count since the monsters that he fought were just level 1 dungeon monsters. Even those weeks of battling monsters in the forest weren’t enough to give him true battle awareness since Flinx was just casting his spells willy-nilly until the monsters were dead. There was no strategy in those battles, just mindless killing, like killing pests.

Flinx knew that the chance of him winning against Semanor was almost nil, but the test wasn’t about winning against a Platinum rank adventurer. It was testing his abilities to check if he could be categorized as a Diamond Rank adventurer.

After a couple of hours of waiting, someone arrived to inform Semanor that the training field was ready. Semanor told Flinx to follow him, so he did, with the four orphans following them excitedly.

Semanor led him to a place that looked like an arena one would see in those television shows about gladiators. The arena was fairly huge, but the notable thing was the seats. It was now filled with people, and based on what Flinx could see, not all of them were adventurers.

The four kids were seated in what looked like VIP seats simply because they were with Flinx when he applied for the test. This made Runt, Kid, Flea, and Dirt look extremely proud.

Flinx smiled wryly when he overheard the betting that had started. The people were not betting against him winning or losing. They were betting on how long he would last.

“How will I know if I passed your test?” Flinx asked Semanor.

“You wouldn’t. It would be my decision.”

“My spells are extremely powerful and deadly.”

“You can use them. The guild had an artifact created by powerful wizards that would protect the rank tester. Once a certain damage threshold had been reached, it would sound an alarm, so you don’t need to hold back.”

Flinx nodded at that information and was reassured. He didn’t know how powerful those protections were, but knew that if something happened, it wouldn’t be his fault.

While they were waiting for everyone to get ready, Flinx made sure to memorize the area so he could teleport around without any problem. When the signal from the referred arrived that the battle should start, Flinx immediately teleported above and cast the Fly, Mage Armor, and Stoneskin spells.

He saw that it was the correct move because, unlike Norban, Semanor didn’t give him time and immediately rushed to where Flinx was before. The crowd surged, filled with excitement, especially when they saw Flinx suddenly high up in the sky.

Flinx immediately cast a couple of Magic Missiles slotted in the first level slots, and magic bolts came out from his hands to converge toward Semanor. He saw the shield warrior retrieve his shield from his back and meet the bolts. Semanor didn’t stop moving and started climbing up in the sky to try to reach Flinx.

He wasn’t surprised that the Platinum rank adventurer could walk in the sky. One wouldn’t reach such a rank if one couldn't move in the air. At the very least, Flinx's magic bolts made Semanor pause.

He took advantage of that pause to cast the 2nd-level spell Magic Mirror. Several copies of him appeared in the sky. He then cast the 2nd-level spell Flock of Familiars. An extremely large number of owls appeared, since Flinx’s images cast the same spell, although the images' familiars weren’t real. Semanor, who was steadily climbing up thew his shield, and it flew in circular motion. It hit all of the owls and all of Flinx’s mirror images, and then it returned to Semanor’s hand. The only reason Flinx wasn’t hit was that he immediately teleported out of the way.

Flinx immediately cast one of his most powerful spells, which was the 7th-level spell, Crown of Stars. He then cast the 2nd-level spell Darkness to cover Semanor in a bubble of darkness, and he immediately followed it with the 6th-level spell Chain Lightning.

He saw Semanor brace himself and then shouted. The shield warrior’s shield glowed extremely bright, and a large image of the shield flew out from Semanor’s shield and grew large enough to dispel the darkness. Then the large glowing shield met Flinx’s Chain Lighting, and the spell was dispersed.

Semanor suddenly threw his sword toward Flinx. He didn’t hesitate and cast the 3rd-level spell Fireball to meet Semanor’s sword, followed by the 5th-level spell Bigby’s Hand to make sure that the sword was blocked.

The crowd cheered at the sight of the powerful spells and skills that Flinx and Semanor had displayed so far, but Flinx didn’t notice since he was focused on his battle against the powerful shield warrior.

Flinx’s Fireball and Bigby’s Hand spells successfully interrupted Semanor’s sword flight, and the sword returned to the warrior’s hand. He cast the 2nd-level spell Hold Person to try to restrict Semanor, but the spell was immediately dispersed by the warrior.

Suddenly, Semanor disappeared, and that greatly worried Flinx. He knew that the disappearance could be because the warrior used a powerful movement or teleport spells, so Flinx immediately cast Teleport again, and he appeared on the ground.

He was correct in his decision because Semanor immediately appeared at Flinx’s last location, swiping a sword. The act caused Flinx to produce a cold sweat on his neck.
