DMS Chapter 38
DMS Chapter 38
Flinx woke up early the next morning. After he was done preparing himself, he went outside, dispelled Galder’s Tower, and headed to the Adventurer Guild. If he wanted information, Flinx knew that he could go to the tavern and talk to the experienced adventurers there, but he was after more than just information. He was hoping to get some sort of referral letter from the guild leader there.
He knew that the only reason he was going to be able to speak with someone like the guild leader was the fact that the town was small. Flinx knew that if he were somewhere like a huge city, an unknown adventurer such as himself would not get an audience with an important person like a guild leader.
Since Flinx was not in a hurry, he walked slowly in the middle of the town, greeting everyone who greeted him first and looking at all the quaint houses and the people milling about. He went through the town’s small market and looked at the different items that were for sale there. He thought about buying some, but when he checked the quality of the items, the things that he could purchase from his system shopping site were better.
Flinx wondered why the town’s people looked happy and content. He did not know if he could live somewhere where there were monsters just outside the town’s gate. Still, it was much better than living inside a cavern as a slave.
The cobblestone was a little hard on his feet, but they were pretty to look at. Flinx felt like he was walking inside the set of a medieval movie. The houses and shops were made with a combination of wood and stone, the highest of which were only two stories high, bringing a feeling of nostalgia inside Flinx. They were reminiscent of every fantasy film and novel that he had watched, read, and loved when he was younger.
The smell, though, was something much less desirable. It was a combination of produce, manure, and body odor. At least the town’s people kept their town tidy. Flinx has not seen any garbage lying around. He also noticed that there were no beggars. More than likely, those types of things would be more prevalent in larger and safer kingdoms.
The town was also small enough that the people were closer to each other. Even Flinx, who was a foreigner and had only lived in the town for weeks, was being greeted with smiles. He knew that it was because a lot of the children in the town liked him because of his storytelling accompanied by illusion magic.
Flinx was not naïve, though. He had experienced severe cruelty already and had tempered his expectations. He knew that since he had decided to move to a place where a high-level dungeon was located to increase the speed of his leveling up, it would be a larger kingdom, possibly filled with powerful people, and powerful people were seldom kind.
Flinx expected to see cruelty like slaves being manhandled, women being treated like slaves, things of that nature. Normally, Flinx was a moral person like any average Joe who grew up healthy back on Earth. If he were transported directly to this place and had encountered such cruelty, there was a chance that he would become a vigilante, fighting such injustices, like the typical masked superhero, and more than likely, it would cause his death.
Because he was now shouldering the responsibility of rescuing his fellow Earthling dungeon miner slaves, the only thing he needed to do was focus on one thing, which was to level up fast. That meant that any cruelty he saw, Flinx needed to avert his eyes, since doing something about it would likely cause him huge trouble.
Still, Flinx knew that for the sake of his extremely fragile sanity, anything that would cross his bottom line happening in front of him, he would do something about it, especially since he was now a powerful wizard. He would not actively search for those kinds of things, though.
Even though the town was a little stinky, which he knew he was being unfair about, the town’s folks still made an effort to beautify their surroundings. There were ornamental plants in front of their houses, and there were vegetable plants in almost every house’s back garden.
The town was small, but there were still armed guards patrolling around. Flinx was impressed by the town’s authority in committing to the safety of the town’s people. Anuel told him that criminal activity in the town was extremely rare, and most of the danger came from monsters from the forest suddenly attacking the walls.
It still amazed Flinx how lively the people were. Children were running around with their little minds filled with adventure. The older folks shouted their wares, gossiping with each other, as if monsters were not just outside the walls.
Flinx knew that if his situation were different, he would be happy staying in this town. He would find someone to care about, form a family, and together with a wife and children, live the rest of his days trying to forget the trauma that had happened in his past. The fact that he had access to an online shop that allowed him to purchase products from Earth and the fact that he had access to Earth’s internet meant that he would have lived a bountiful and content life in this small frontier town. He just sighed inwardly and turned his attention to the building in front of him.
The guild house was a little quiet. Flinx expected that since it was mid-morning. The activity usually happened in the afternoon or early evening when adventurers returned from their adventures outside the town. Anuel told him that the adventurers who stayed in a frontier town were usually the ones who did not like delving into dungeons and preferred to kill monsters out in the forest. If Flinx were being honest, he would have preferred that option as well, but considering his need for faster leveling up speed, he would need to face his trauma and return to dungeon delving.
Thankfully, Flinx’s aversion was focused mainly on cavern-type floors since that was where he had lived most of his time as a dungeon miner slave. If he found a dungeon that had a different environment setting, it would make his delving more comfortable.
The Adventurer Guild building was one of the few buildings in the town that reached four stories high. The only structure that was higher was the mansion where the mayor, or governor, or whatever name they call themselves live.
Flinx entered the guild house and was thankful that there was a person reading a book manning the receptionist table.
“Good morning. Is the guild master around? I would like to speak with him,” Flinx asked the male receptionist.
“Flinx, you’re back! How’s your adventure outside? Guild master Norban is upstairs. You can just go to his office. Do you need me to guide you?” The man said.
Unfortunately for Flinx, most of the town folks knew him by name, but he only knew a few of their names. He was a little embarrassed to ask for the guy’s name. He nodded his answer that he would have liked a guide. Since there were no other people around, Flinx knew that it was not a huge imposition for the receptionist to guide him.
