DMS Chapter 39
DMS Chapter 39
Flinx, led by one of the Adventurer Guild’s receptionist arrived at Guild Master Norban’s office. The receptionist knocked on the door, and when Captain Norban answered, the guy entered, leading Flinx.
“Norban, Flinx is here to talk to you,” The receptionist said, then left immediately.
Flinx was surprised at how familiar the guy receptionist greeted Guild Master Norban.
“That boy’s my nephew. How can I help you, Flinx?” Norban said, who probably saw that Flinx noticed the familiar way he was greeted by the receptionist.
The guild master’s office was a simple office devoid of any sort of pretentiousness. Anuel once told him that anyone who had managed to climb up the ranks of any organization in a huge city would usually go out of their way to flaunt their gained power. It would normally first appear in their homes, offices, and other personal belongings, which were usually more lavishly decorated than a noble’s.
Flinx did not know Norban, so he should not assume why the guild master’s office was decorated that way, but his theory was that because the town was a frontier town, there was no one here the master could flaunt his gained power. There might also be a chance that Norban, being the guild master in this place, was a form of ostracizing the man. It could also be that the man was born here and did not need to impress his friends and family.
Norban’s office had a large table filled with paperwork. There were filing cabinets on the side, and a couple of chairs where visitors could sit. Flinx assumed that if there were more visitors who wanted to talk to the guild master, they would probably relocate somewhere more comfortable.
There was another table on the other side of the office that contained what Flinx assumed was alcohol and a few glasses by its side. Flinx immediately thought of the fact that he came in empty-handed when he had a favor to ask, so he immediately went to his system shopping site and bought a liter of vodka in a nice bottle for 50 dollars. He retrieved the spirit from his 4th tab space and handed it to Norban.
The guild master looked surprised upon receiving the bottle of vodka.
“What’s this?” Norban asked.
“It’s a bottle of spirit we call Vodka in my homeland,” Flinx said. He did not know if there was a word for “Vodka” in the common language of this place, which was the language that he learned from Priest Anuel.
Norban looked excited when he heard that Flinx’s gift was alcohol from a faraway place.
“Can I taste it?” Norban asked, and Flinx nodded.
Looking at the guild master’s excitement, Flinx thought that maybe he should have bought a pricier vodka. He did not know much about alcohol since he was not much of a drinker when he was back on Earth.
Norban went to the table where bottles of alcohol and glasses were placed, took a small glass, and poured a small amount of vodka from Flinx’s gift into the glass. Flinx saw that the guild master was an experienced drinker and probably knew how to drink any kind of alcohol once he learned what type of alcohol it was. Norban then poured the drink into his mouth and smacked his lips.
“That is one good, hard liquor! This kind of alcohol would cost an arm and a leg in the capital. So what do you need from me in exchange for this alcohol?” Norban smiled.
“I need to kill powerful monsters to increase my power, since that’s the only way for me to be able to return home. Unfortunately, killing monsters in the forest outside is taking me a long time since I have to travel for hours to locate each of their territories. I realized that the best place for me to power up fast was to delve into a high-level dungeon. I’m hoping that you give me some advice on the best place where I can go. I’m also hoping that you can give me some sort of referral letter so I can delve into dungeons or even group with other high-level adventurers,” Flinx told the guild master.
“We knew that you would not stay in this town, especially since you’ve been very open in your need to kill monsters. There are even two betting pools among the adventurers on how long you’ll last here. The first one is for how long before you die, and the second one is for how long before you leave. I did bet that you’ll survive, and put my money on the second pool. Unfortunately, I still lost since I assume that you will be leaving immediately?” Norban asked, and Flinx just nodded.
“The best referral you can have is a higher rank in the guild. Since you’ve already sold a lot of parts from high-level monsters, you fulfilled one of the requirements. The next part is for someone higher rank in the guild to test you, and in this town, the only one who could do that is me. Unfortunately, the highest rank I can give you once you’ve passed my test is gold. If you want, we can go to the training field at the back right now for me to test you, so you can have the rank immediately.”
Flinx told Norban that he would prefer to complete the test right away since he planned to leave immediately.
“Well, you’re in luck. A caravan will arrive tomorrow from the kingdom of Norwood headed to the capital city of Ilioven of the kingdom of Ilinestor. Ilioven had tens of dungeons, from copper rank dungeons to Mythic rank dungeons.”
“What about Legendary rank dungeons?”
“We don’t build a regular city around those. We call cities that are built around a Platinum city, and only mythic-level and above people can enter those locations. Regular folks are not allowed in a Platinum city since the aura coming from the dungeon is enough to kill a civilian. Even Mythic Dungeons are incredibly dangerous, so the five Mythic Dungeons in Ilioven are isolated, and walls are built around them. Even then, regular citizens were informed not to approach Mythic Dungeons.”
Flinx found the things that Norban was telling him incredibly fascinating. He was sure that the guild master only became voluble because of his vodka gift. He decided that after he received the gold identification card from Norban, he would gift the guild master another vodka. A pricier one.
After that talk, Flinx and Norban headed directly to the training field. When the receptionist learned that Norban would be testing Flinx, the guy suddenly ran out. The guild master told Flinx that his nephew was going into the next-door tavern to inform everyone, so he should expect an audience for their fight.
When they arrived at the training field, Norban and Flinx stood in the middle, a few feet apart. For some reason, the guild master told him that they needed to wait. Apparently, a fight between high-level adventurers was rare, and it would help a lot of low-level adventurers to see something like it.
Flinx gave his permission that it was alright for people to view his assessment. Not that Norban asked for it. While they were waiting, he reviewed in his mind what spells Flinx would use. He did not know how powerful Norban was, and he also did not want to kill the man. That meant that he would need to select spells that were not fatal.
He felt nervous about injuring the guild master, so he asked the man up to which level of spells he could cast.
