Chapter 86: Under The Moonlight
"..."
"Guess I got a bit carried away, huh?" Loraine muttered to herself, awkwardly scratching her cheek as she avoided Yura’s piercing gaze.
The crimson haired woman stood before the now seated Loraine, standing over her with her arms crossed and her expression radiating an aura of rage, Loraine feeling a powerful chill run down her spine as she all her buffs and effects had worn off, leaving her as fragile as a leaf under Yura’s mercy.
"That wasn’t normal, what the hell was that?" Yura asked questioningly, raising her brow as she spoke. "You fought with precision and power I’ve never seen before, you’re quick to adapt, you’re creative with how you fight,"
Yura chuckled in amazement, facepalming as she realized that the white haired maiden in front of her was something more valuable than she had initially thought.
"This is definitely not your first time in a situation like this, I know that for a fact." Yura said, placing her hands on her hips as she leaned down toward Loraine, a small grin on her face.
’Well shit, I guess Yura’s a lot smarter than I gave her credit for, maybe I shouldn’t have gone all out like that in the first place.’ Loraine thought breaking a nervous sweat, Yura’s gaze seeing through her.
"Tell me, how are you able to do that? Did you receive special training? Do you come from a renowned family? Do you have an extraordinary Talent that allows you to do that?" Yura asked, bombarding the white haired maid with a lot of questions, the sheer amount overwhelming Loraine a bit.
’It wouldn’t be too unlikely, Talents are far more rare and powerful than conventional Skills, if she got her hands on a weak Class, but was blessed with an extraordinary Talent, it would make sense for her to be able to perform so well. I assume It must be something similar to [Physical Enhancement], perhaps even an upgraded version?’
Yura thought to herself, wracking her mind for a suitable answer to her theories, Loraine’s display of power being the only thing on her mind.
"Well, I guess I might as well just spill the beans, there’s no point in hiding it after a performance like that." Loraine said, shrugging casually.
"So you’re a maid from the Ashbourne family?" Yura asked, a bit surprised as she didn’t think that Loraine had the potential backing of a noble. "And you managed to reach such power through sheer training alone? Without a Talent?"
She was absolutely awestruck at Loraine’s story, the white haired maiden apparently possessing no Talent or extraordinary ability outside of being a maid to have pushed her power to an extraordinary extent, the crimson haired woman finding it a bit hard to believe.
Loraine nodded, a small smile stretched across her face. They were seated side by side on the moonlit grass, having spend several minutes talking to each other and answering each other’s questions, having bonded a little as they enjoyed each other’s company.
"Yep, most of the time I trained my abilities in the comfort of my home, everyday was a chance to grow stronger, unlike other maids I was more ambitious to grow out my powers."
Loraine said, feeling a bit bad that she had to lie to Yura like this, but she had a feeling that the crimson haired woman wasn’t buying it entirely, but there was no way to confirm if Loraine had been lying or not as you couldn’t see another person’s Status Window.
"And you’ve been awakened for how long now?" Yura asked, raising a questioning brow.
Loraine remained silent for a moment, an awkward silence settling in between them for a moment before she answered.
"A month," She replied, scratching her cheek awkwardly, Yura’s expression turning to that of anger as she couldn’t believe it.
"Bullshit!" Yura said, turning to give Loraine a bit of a glare, the white haired maiden finding Yura’s outburst funny as she laughed to herself.
"You’re telling me you managed to grow this much within a month’s time? Without fighting monsters and raising your levels? You’re joking, you had to be doing this your entire life, and even then I still find it suspicious."
’Well, I can’t exactly tell her that my system allows me to accept Daily Quests and special quests every now and then, she would probably freak out if I told her I levelled up from doing household chores.’ She thought to herself, a small chuckle escaping her lips.
Loraine simply shrugged, "You don’t have to believe me if you don’t want to," She said, standing up as she analyzed her dirty clothes, placing her hand on her chest as she activated [Cleanse].
The dirt, grime, and filth on her maid uniform was immediately wiped away, rendering her outfit squeaky clean, though the scratches and frequent tears was still an issue, as Loraine would have to change out of her set of clothes and into a new one.
"Well anyway, now that I’ve answered all your questions, we might as well start heading back towards the Inn, it’s getting really late you know?" Loraine said, holding out a hand to pull the crimson haired woman up.
Yura stared at Loraine’s hand for a moment, her expression shifting to her face. She still had so many questions for Loraine to answer, but Loraine was right, they had been outside for a very long time, and they needed to head back.
"Yeah yeah, whatever, but don’t think this means I’m letting you off the hook so easily. I’ll be watching you closely, Loraine." Yura said, a small smirk playing on her lips as she allowed herself to be lifted up, grabbing Loraine’s hand and walking back to Aveldon together.
The walk was quiet, said for the occasional rustle of trees, or creaking of old architecture, the sounds of Loraine’s and Yura’s footsteps echoing through the night.
"Hey Yura," Loraine asked, turning her face towards the crimson haired maiden, Yura raising a brow.
"Thank you for coming to check up on me, and for the sparring match we had, I’ve learned a lot tonight and I’m grateful for your help." Loraine said, flashing Yura a bright genuine smile, the crimson haired maiden’s eyes widening a bit in surprise at Loraine’s genuine admission.
A small smile bloomed on her face, "Don’t worry about it, I’m simply doing my job in making sure you’re safe, though after tonight’s performance, I don’t think that’s really a responsibility for me anymore, you jerk."
Yura said, playfully punching Loraine on her shoulder, the white maiden recoiling in pain as Yura hit her a harder than she expected.
The two shared a laugh before arriving at the Inn, Loraine’s eyes roaming the building for a moment before she realized that the lights were off, a look of horrific realization settling on her features as she quickly reached for the handle, trying to open it.
But it wouldn’t open, the door creaking a bit under the pressure, but it was locked tight.
"Oh no....." Loraine’s face turned pale, the color draining from her skin as if she had just heard the most awful news of her life, Yura flinching in surprise as she noticed how quickly Loraine’s expression turned to that of death.
"What’s wrong? Why do you look so pale?" Yura asked.
"We’re locked outside...." Loraine said, shaking her head. "We took too long, everyone must be asleep by now."
Yura laughed, placing a hand on Loraine’s shoulder. "Really? That’s what you’re worried about? C’mon, there are plenty of Inn’s in Aveldon, you really have nothing to fear." She said, trying to reassure Loraine but the white haired maiden only shook her head in response.
"No Yura, all of them are closed." Loraine said, her words surprising Yura. She had used [Maiden’s Intuition] a moment ago, spreading her senses to their absolute limit, not being able to detect a single soul still awake at this hour.
"Everyone’s asleep, no bars, no Inn’s," She continued, "We’re stuck outside till sunrise."
"WHAT!?" Yura exclaimed, Loraine’s hand shooting out to cover her mouth, a sharp glare coming from the small white maiden to silence her, a few seconds passing by in awkward silence before Loraine allowed Yura to speak again.
"You’re joking, there’s got to be at least one Inn still open at this hour, how do you even know all of them are closed? You’re just paranoid." Yura said, clicking her tongue in mild annoyance. "I’ll check out the area, and I’ll come get you after I’ve found one."
"Sure, be my guest, might as well get myself comfy in the meantime." Loraine said, shrugging as she watched Yura vanish from her sight, a powerful burst of wind slamming into her as she was momentarily disoriented, the [Radiant Spear Master]’s speed was truly remarkable.
After a few moments though, Yura returned, visibly taken aback as she couldn’t find a single Inn that was still operating at this hour, Loraine’s smug smile awaiting her and annoying her a bit.
"Damn...guess you were right, we really are stranded out here." Yura said, scratching her head in mild annoyance as she exhaled sharply, walking up to Loraine.
"Well, nothing we can do about it," Loraine said, a small chuckle escaping her lips as she found the situation funny. "Come sit next to me, we can keep each other company in the meantime." Loraine spoke with a cheeky grin, patting the spot next to her.
"..." Yura seemed a bit hesitant and annoyed, someone as powerful and respected as her, sleeping on the side of the road? It was embarrassing to think about, if word got out it would be utterly humiliating.
But what choice did she have, it’s not like they had any other options, at least she wasn’t alone to suffer by herself.
"Oh well," Yura said with resignation in her tone, sinking beside Loraine as she sat beside her, her armor creaking with the effort as she placed her spear at her side, a tired sigh escaping her lips.
She thought about how everyone else must be sleeping so soundly by now, the journey of Lazarus and the dangerous S-Rank Dungeon on her mind, her resolve hardening as she clenched her fist.
’I guess this is just a small obstacle in my journey, If I want to chase being an S-Rank Adventurer, I will have to prove myself in this upcoming raid. I won’t let another disaster happen again.’ Yura thought to herself, her mind briefly flashing back to a traumatic memory.
The sheer danger of a Dungeon breaking was terrifying, as it was in such an event where she had lost her family and the home she grew up in, nearly losing her own life in the process as she ended up being saved by adventurers who took her in.
After that tragic incident, Yura devoted herself to becoming an Adventurer, as after she had awakened as a Rare Rarity [Radiant Spear Master], with a Rare Talent [Vermillion Drive], her life was spent training to become a hero that could protect those from having to experience the same fate she has.
’An adventurer, huh?’ Yura thought to herself, her eyes drifting to the white haired woman who’s head was leaning against the wall, her breathing rising and falling as she had already fallen asleep, a contemplative look in her eye.
Loraine was exceptional, no doubt about it, she had proved herself worthy, and Yura had promised to help her register when they arrived at Lazarus, the crimson haired woman wondering how much Loraine could improve If she continued to face monsters.
Well, that was something future Yura would have to figure out, as her eyes were starting to get heavy, a tired yawn escaping her lips as she felt her consciousness drift, the warm embrace of slumber coming to claim her.
The moon shone radiantly above them, illuminating the streets and basking Aveldon in it’s pristine glow, as Yura and Loraine slept through the night.
