Chapter 57: The Wolf In Sheep’s Clothing
The cellars were dark, every inch of the prison cells drenched in a shroud of darkness that made it hard to see normally.
Grunts of fellow prisoners rang out as they struggled to break past the bars holding them there, special mana restraining chains bound around their arms, constantly sucking out their Mana Points and draining them of any strength, making escapable impossible.
The door to the cellars creaked open, as the chief officer stepped inside the room, a giant ring of keys in his hand as he led Rowan and his butler into where Jack and his men were being kept.
A bandit who was there on the night of Loraine’s attack sat inside a dark cell, the pulsing light of the mana restraining chains being the only light they were allowed to have in the darkness. He glanced up, as the chief officer and Rowan walked past, his eyes shining with recognition as he rushed towards the bars, grabbing onto them to get the attention of their boss.
"Boss! Boss! Over here!" The bandit yelled to get the man’s attention, "Please free us! I’m too young to rot inside here!" The bandit begged loudly, drawing the attention of the others as they too gazed at the powerful figure walking infront of them.
The quiet cellar immediately erupted into a cacophony of pleas and begging as all the bandits began to cry for Rowan to come free them, the chief of the Eastern Prison Unit glancing behind him with fear in his eyes as he realized why such an important figure was here.
’He’s their boss!?’ The chief thought to himself, his eyes meeting Rowan’s cold piercing stare as he quickly averted his gaze, gulping nervously as he felt shivers run down his spine.
He always knew that most noble families were corrupt in some way, it was common knowledge at this point.
In this world the strong could do whatever they wanted, as long as they had enough power at their finger tips, nobody would dare oppose them, it was why noble families were so feared in the first place.
They arrived at the last cell in the long line of them, the constant begging on the prisoners fading away as they were far enough to not hear them anymore, having finally arrived at Jack’s holding cell, the shadowy figure of a large burly man sitting in the darkness awaiting them.
"H-Here we are, sir Rowan," The chief stammered as he gestured toward’s Jack’s cell, turning to face him as he felt a scorching, and frightening aura of bloodlust burn into his body the moment he did so, as Rowan glared fiercely at the man responsible for losing his ring.
"T-This is the man that-"
"Open it...."
The command was simple and devastating, the air in the room vanishing as it was replaced with a terrifying tension. The Lionheart family’s son was furious, and he didn’t want to deal with something of that magnitude, knowing damn well that he could be killed and no one would even bother to bat an eye.
"Y-Yes sir! Of course!" The chief officer said, his arm trembling slightly as he held the key, using it to unlock the door to Jack’s cell, the cell swinging open with an ominous creek.
Rowan didn’t waste another second as he took a step inside the cell, Jack’s head rising up to see who had entered when his eyes when wide with shock, terror, and a bit of hope all at once.
"B-Boss!" Jack called out as he stood up, the chains on his arms clanking as he did, pulling him back a bit as he greeted him. In the next moment however, a crushing weight enveloped his chest, a piercing glare from Rowan forcing him to his knees as he fell to the floor, his face contorting in pain.
Rowan didn’t acknowledge his suffering, as he ominously crouched down in front of the kneeling Jack, his eyes burning with fury and malevolence as he stared at Jack’s trembling form. This was the man he had entrusted with his ring, every precious Item in that ring was lost, all the accumulated efforts of everyone in his organization lost in a single night!
He steadied his breathing, calming himself down from killing the man in front of him, after all, a dead man cant give him the answers he wants.
"What happened that night, Jack?" Rowan asked, leaning closer as he awaited an answer, his voice a terrifying growl of power and bloodlust. "Do you know how much progress we have lost because of your actions?"
He asked again, his voice taking on a more wrathful tone as his aura burst out around him, sending cracks billowing throughout the room and making the whole Prison Unit tremble, his wrath alone enough to spawn forth an earthquake of his malevolent power.
Jack’s body trembled uncontrollably, sweat staining every crevice of his body as he shook, barely able to mutter a word under the soul crushing weight of his master’s wrath. Jack bowed his head against the floor, entering a pleading gesture as he spoke up.
"Forgive me master! It wasn’t my intention!" Jack begged, fear eminent in his tone as he hesitantly glanced up to meet the fearsome gaze of his master. He recalled the events of the night that had ruined everything, the image of the white haired maiden that had overwhelmed him with unmatchable power sending a slight shiver down his spine.
"It was a woman...she was dressed in a maid attire, but possessed grand magical abilities..." Jack started, Rowan’s eyes squinting in interest as he continued. "I had mistaken her for a mere maid, I thought she was perhaps a friend of Jacob, and I would’ve made quick work of her...."
He swallowed as he recounted how Loraine had turned the tide of battle, and began to overwhelm him with strength that was straight up out of this world, each blow reducing his HP by massive amounts.
"But she was no ordinary maid, master! I tell you she wasn’t!" Jack said with conviction, his eyes twinkling with a twinge of madness. "Her powers were far stronger than the disguise she associated herself with, she was a powerful mage! Wearing a maid attire to deceive her enemies and pretend she was weak!"
"I was quickly overwhelmed by the abilities she possessed, as she managed to seize control of me completely with her magic, rendering my only means of combat null as she toyed with me like I was nothing!"
Rowan remained quiet for a moment, the anger in his eyes dissipating just a bit as a slight stir of interest began to form in their depths. A grand magician, hiding in the disguise of a helpless maid to fool their enemies? It sounded ridiculous, and yet it intrigued him a bit, a small smirk forming against his lips at the thought.
’A wolf in sheep’s clothing, huh?’ He thought, a small chuckle escaping his lips. ’Now that’s interesting, now I want to see this maid for myself.’
His expression turned serious as he grabbed Jack by the neck, lifting him upwards with his overwhelming strength, the chains binding him snapping like twigs, a sharp clank echoing throughout the quiet cell.
The chief’s eyes widened with shock and fright, his body trembling uncontrollably as the killing intent was even more potent than before, the sheer magnitude of it threatening to make him collapse on his knees as he struggled to even stand.
’Master Rowan....’ The butler thought, a slight sigh escaping his lips. He knew about the master’s plan, and how the very ring that was lost was a key contributor that had a lot valuables, wealth, and treasures accumulated from all their illegal profanities.
Rowan watched as Jack struggled to gasp for air, his body thrashing desperately as he tried to free himself, but to no avail, it was simply impossible.
"What did this magician look like? What kind of uniform did they wear? Are there any details I should be aware of?" Rowan asked, determined to find the person who had put his operation on stall.
Jack struggled to answer, his voice coming out as a raspy, choked whisper. "She had....white hair...short..." He coughed, choking as Rowan ease his grip a little, allowing for a brief respite of air to fill Jack’s lungs as he inhaled greedily.
"Her eyes were red...like rubies! And she wore a black, and white maid uniform...." Jack answered, Rowan glancing back at his butler as he was already taking notes, writing down all the details about their suspect.
"Anything else? Was there a symbol attached to their uniform? Did had anything unique about it at all?"
"I...I don’t know! That’s all I know!" Jack squealed, struggling to breathe. Rowan’s eyes gleamed with malice as he tightened his grip on Jack’s neck, a throbbing hot pain sealing Jack’s windpipe as he couldn’t breathe anymore, Rowan’s grip tightening around Jack’s neck as he spoke with a cold tone.
"Then you are of no more use to me," He said, his hand clenching around Jack’s neck with superhuman strength that broke through his neck, crushing him and killing him as a loud crack echoed in the dark cell, Jack’s body going limp and slumping over.
The chief’s eyes widened in shock, his jaw dropping in a display of horror and fright, the sight before him sending shivers down his spine as he watched Rowan toss the body of the man to the side like trash, the body landing with a soft thud.
"Alfred, we’re leaving." Rowan said, turning around to walk out of the cell, making his way down the hall as he passed the kneeling chief, not bothering to spare an ounce of his attention on the weakling.
Alfred nodded, grabbing a pouch from his pocket and placing it in the chief’s hand, the chief turning to look at Alfred as he spoke. "You’re a good man, aren’t you?" Alfred asked, gesturing towards Jack’s body. "Be sure to clean this mess,"
He said, walking after his master as they left the chief to deal with the grueling task.
’A maid, huh? There could be a lot of them everywhere in the Royal Capital, assuming the damn bastard hasn’t left the city yet.’ Rowan thought, his expression serious as he clenched his fist. He thought if perhaps the grand magician was a part of a noble household, and was perhaps sent to retrieve one of his rings.
But that would be rather unlikely, as he couldn’t think of any noble family that had problems with his, or atleast have expressed them openly.
’If the other nobles are behind this, then that dwindles our targets down by quite a bit.’
’I’ll hunt them down and make them pay for daring to cross the Lionheart family!’
