Chapter 58: Quiet Before The Storm
A few days had passed after Loraine’s awakening was made public to everyone, the atmosphere in the mansion having changed drastically. The news was monumental to say the least, and everyone was still talking about it as time went on, the fact that the good-for-noting maid was an awakened being still not settling down in their minds.
Loraine continued doing her tasks through all of this, even as people talked behind her back and whispered to themselves, she kept doing her tasks diligently and more efficiently as she didn’t have to worry about hiding her abilities anymore, being able to use them freely, while still relatively holding herself back because of her [Mystic Amplification] Talent.
She had levelled up twice during this brief period of time, with her skills having gained plentiful levels and increasing their efficiency and power, with the most notable one being [Aura Of Haste], which gained an extra 1% of power added to it with every level it gained, Loraine being surprised to hear this as the skill had reached level 10.
Providing a 60% boost to all her attributes besides Intelligence, further boosted into a 6x boost by [Mystic Amplification], the potential that the skill could provide becoming even more absurd with this revelation.
Inside the mansion’s kitchen, the cooks were busy preparing breakfast for the Ashbourne’s, as while everyone was busy preparing the family’s meal, Loraine and Christine were busy and engaging in some practice.
The air filled with both the sounds of cooking, and magical energy discharge.
"Tsk....this is so...difficult." Loraine complained under her breath, her fingers burning hot as she practiced Christine’s theory on [Ignition], channeling her Mana through her fingers and sending her mana outward through her palms, and increasing the heat as it travelled through her being.
Christine smiled as she glanced at Loraine, the white haired maiden still trying to learn the Skill as she had been practicing it off and on over the past few days, getting better and better on manipulating the flow of her Mana, a fundamental inside the law of magic.
"Again! Come on do it faster!" Christine said, hitting Loraine on the head with a spatula, a pained grunt escaping Loraine’s lips as she became visibly annoyed by her friend’s antics. "You have to send it out with a quick burst, you need to get better at blasting your Mana through instead of letting it flow naturally." She explained.
"Can’t you see I’m trying to do that?" Loraine asked, dipping her hands in a pot of water to cool them off from how hot they were burning, a steam of smoke rising in the air as the heat from her palms were extinguished, a relieved breath leaving her lips as the pain went away.
’This is so different from using my other Skills, I would normally just have to think and discharge my Mana to activate [Cleanse] and [Magical Grasp], the same thing for [Aura Of Haste] too, even if all that magical energy is discharged all over my body to strengthen my physique and enhance my physical capabilities.’
She glanced at her hands, sighing in disappointment as she dried her hands off with a cloth.
’I’ll just have to practice this Skill another time, at least my comprehension has improved a lot.’
[Learning Skill: Ignition]
[Rarity: Uncommon]
[Current Comprehension: 30/100%]
’If I keep this up I should get it down by the end of the week.’ Loraine smiled as she gazed upon her progress, a tinge of excitement building up in her chest as she couldn’t wait to see what a Skill that is used for cooking could become something far more deadlier in her hands.
After breakfast was prepared for the Ashbourne family, Loraine moved on to complete the rest of her chores, having gained today’s experience and rewards, but instead saving them for later tonight when she could be alone to claim them.
"Oh that tastes good," Loraine muttered to herself as she sat in the garden, sipping on a warm cup of tea as she gazed out into the wonderful view. "I should really come outside more often, it’s so beautiful out here." She said to herself.
"Loraine!" Two voices shouted instantaneously grabbing her attention as she saw Christine and Sarah make their way to her, waving as they approached. Loraine had introduced Christine to Sarah not too long ago, and the two of them got along well shortly after meeting.
"Are you both done with today’s work?" Loraine asked, raising a brow as she looked at them approaching, as they both slid into seats around the table.
Sarah smiled at the question, shaking her head gently as she answered in a soft spoken tone. "I’m only taking a small break, I still have a few things I have to handle today." She said, Loraine giving her a nod of understanding as she turned to Christine.
"Nuh-uh," Christine replied negatively, placing her hands on her hips as she sighed with exhaustion. "We still have to cook lunch, and dinner for the family later during the day, so I’m going to leave for a little bit to take care of some stuff at home." She said, a small snicker leaving Loraine’s lips as she covered her mouth.
"We? Who’s we?" She said with a teasing grin. "I don’t have to cook, I was given permission yes, but it’s not mandatory for me like it is for you guys." She said in a smug tone, Christine gasping in surprise.
"What!? But what about our practice? We still have to get [Ignition] down!" Christine said with a bit of frustration in her voice, crossing her arms under her ample chest as she pouted with a soft huff. "And here I thought Loraine was a kind maiden, and would be helping me get better at cooking too!"
’Oh come on, don’t say it like that! Now you’re making me feel guilty!’ Loraine complained inwardly, though she let out a small laugh on the outside.
"I was just kidding, Christine, I wouldn’t give up on my training so soon." She said, shrugging with a exaggerated sigh. "And I suppose, I have to go ahead and teach you as well, ugh."
Christine smiled as she felt happy that her complaining got through to Loraine, clenching her fists in victory as she couldn’t wait for Loraine to help improve her culinary skills.
"Alright! I guess I’ll see you two later," Christine said, sliding backwards in her chair as she stood up and made her way towards to leave the mansion grounds, waving goodbye to the two of them.
Loraine and Sarah waved goodbye to Christine, enjoying tea together for a little while before Christine had to go back to her duties, and leaving Loraine behind as well.
"Welp, guess it’s just me for the time being, I suppose I can continue practicing this damn [Ignition] Skill while they are gone." Loraine sighed, figuring that she had nothing else to do but this, and she didn’t want to open her Daily Quest rewards as if she were to receive Items, she was afraid someone might see it.
The day soon passed quickly, the sun setting over the horizon as darkness descended upon the Royal Capital. Loraine for the most part continued to practice her [Ignition] Skill for the rest of the day, while also stopping here and there to assist Christine in preparing meals for the family every now and then.
She moved through the mansion as she emerged from the kitchen, having just finished washing the dishes after the family had their dinner.
The maids glanced at her as she approached, as all of them were gathered in the great hall of the mansion, Loraine’s eyes following their gaze as she watched the members of the Ashbourne family descend down the flight of stairs, as Kain and Valmont were dressed in shining armor from head to toe, with Cecillia dressed in light robes that made her look similar to a priestess, or a mage.
Loraine and the rest of the maids bowed as they passed, showing their respect and servitude as Kain spoke. "We will be out for a few days, a Dungeon has appeared near the Royal Capital and our family is going to be the first to explore it." He said, his hand reaching for the door as he stopped and turned to look at them.
"Be sure to take good care of Lilith while we’re gone, and continue to maintain the house as you always have up until now." He commanded, the maids responding affirmatively, as he was about to turn around and leave, Loraine quickly raised her hand to grab his attention, an eager look in her eyes.
"Please sir, allow me to cater to Lilith." Loraine asked elegantly, her head bowed low. The other maids turned to look at her as if she had spoken out of line, but Kain proceeded to give her a nod as he turned to leave without a word, a happy grin forming on Loraine’s lips.
’Yes!’ She thought, pumping her fist in the air as she felt ecstatic, even though everyone around her was glaring at her.
’I need to go and get her gift, Lilith’s going to love this!’ Loraine said, turning around as she began to sprint toward the kitchen down the hall, Margret’s angry shouting fading away into the background as she was brimming with excitement to take care of the young mistress.
