Chapter 50: The End Of A Worthless Maid
The room went silent, everyone froze up as Loraine’s words sent forth a shock that paralyzed their systems in that moment. Kain blinked in surprise, glancing over at Margret, he couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
Cecellia, Valmont, Lilith, and Christine all had their eyes on the white haired maiden as they couldn’t believe what she was saying, the garbage maid had awakened the same Class as Margret, it was absolutely insane to think about.
"Wait...what...?" Christine muttered in shock, pointing a finger between Margret and Loraine repeatedly in shock, unable to process the absurd reality behind her statement. "I thought you had awakened some sort of [Master Chef] Class, I didn’t think you’d share the same class as Margret." She said, a satisfied Loraine letting out a small chuckle.
"Wait what..." A chef whispered in astonishment and awe, covering their mouth. "Two [Sacred Maid]s?"
"That’s kinda nuts isn’t it?"
"Isn’t [Sacred Maid] a Rare Class? Does that mean Loraine would be the top maid?"
"Beats me, but things have definetly changed if Loraine’s a [Sacred Maid] as well, that means she can use magic right?"
The chefs and cooks began to murmur among themselves, the situation escalating into frantic questions and awe driven statement about Loraine’s bombshell of an awakening, as everyone wondered the same thing.
If there were two [Sacred Maid]s in one household, who would become the head maid?
"..." Margret was speechless, not being able to believe her ears. Her eyes were wide, fingers twitching uncontrollably at her sides as the reality of Loraine’s awakening settled in, her heart racing in her chest frantically.
’Loraine....a [Sacred Maid]?’ She questioned inwardly, shaking her head as if to deny the reality of such a possibility. ’No no no no, that can’t be right....she’s joking! She has to be bluffing!’ Margret thought to herself.
She was the head maid, the most valued maid in the Ashbourne mansion, and the most powerful maid in this house! She can’t be replaced, she won’t be replaced!
"The same Class as Margret," Kain said, raising a questioning brow as he glanced over at Loraine, the white haired maiden nodding in affirmation. "This is certainly a surprise I have to admit." He chuckled amused.
"My~My~" Cecillia cooed, fanning her face with her fan as her eyes twinkled with interest. She was expecting Loraine to reveal some mediocre class, but to awaken a Rare Class was certainly something to behold.
Her eyes wandered over to the two women, one being unsettlingly calm, and the other fuming with uncontrollable rage that she wasn’t even trying to hide anymore.
Loraine could feel the pure rage being directed to her by Margret, the sheer bloodlust radiating off the old woman crawling up her spine made her uncomfortable, but even Loraine herself knew that Margret was no match for her.
’She’s so mad because her position might be threatened, this is the maddest I’ve seen her so far.’ Loraine thought with a small smile on her face, secretly enjoying how much Margret was fuming and couldn’t do anything about it.
"Mind proving this claim as well?" Kain asked, snapping Loraine out of her brief moment of bliss as she nodded.
Loraine turned her attention back to the dining table, reaching her hand out as she aimed it at a fork on the table, using [Magical Grasp] in front of everyone as her began to glow in a bright blue light, the effects of [Mystic Amplification] kicking in as the effects were massively boosted.
Everyone watched in astonishment as the fork began to float up into the air, the most shocked being Margret as she just watched one of her core skills being used in front of her very eyes, shattering any last mental barrier she had tried to defend herself from.
’N...no way...’ Margret thought in shock, watching as the fork began to float towards Loraine’s hand, landing in her palm as the crowd around her gasped in awe and astonishment, Christine blinking in surprise as she witnessed the magical act.
Loraine smirked as she glanced at Margret, taking in her shocked expression with a sense of glee, before returning her gaze back to Kain, the nobleman nodding his head approvingly as she had proven her claims once more.
There was no denying it, enough evidence had been presented by the lowly maid.
"As for a Talent, I haven’t awakened any." Loraine said, answering Kain’s other question before he could ask, placing her hands on her hips with a sigh. "Becoming a [Sacred Maid] is the only thing I have to my name right now, its how I was able to prepare such good food for you with the help of a skill named [Cooking Excellence]." She said.
Kain stared at her for a moment, taking in her words. "Alright then, you’ve proven your credibility." He said, clasping his hands together as his expression turned serious. "You’ve proven yourself to have become good at what you do, even being able to outwork most of your peers in their respective departments." He spoke, referring to the chefs and by extension Margret herself.
"Now then," His voice became cold, eyes turning serious as he stared at Loraine, a rush of fear running down her spine as she tensed up under his overwhelming gaze. "How long have you hidden it from us?" He asked before continuing.
"If you’ve awakened your abilities, then why hide them from your family? Are you perhaps planning something we are not aware of?" Kain asked.
’Shit...’ Loraine gulped for a moment, breaking a nervous sweat. She wasn’t sure as to how to answer this question, as she herself didn’t want to know how they could react.
After a brief moment of silence, Loraine finally spoke up, bowing her head respectfully as she did so.
"Forgive me, sir," She apologized gracefully, "I simply wasn’t sure how’d you’d all react to the news, as I was afraid that it could’ve been received negatively, and instead opted to keep it hidden for as long as possible." She said, trying to sound as sincere as possible.
’She wasn’t sure how’d we’d react?’ Kain blinked in surprise, a small chuckle escaping his lips. ’Well, that’s interesting.’ He thought, glancing over at Cecillia who simply smiled at the notion.
The floor screeched as Kain pushed his chair back, standing up from his position. Loraine lifted her head, eyes widening in panic as she watched the imposing figure approach her, her heart racing in her chest as she started to sweat nervously.
’Crap...what do I do? Is this it? Do I fight back?’ Loraine’s mind began to race, her hands twitching at her sides as she wondered to herself if she should use [Magical Grasp] or not, gulping nervously as she tried her best to appear calm even though she was freaking out on the inside.
Kain walked up to the white haired maiden, the lowly ranking maid keeping her head down as she didn’t want to meet his imposing gaze. He turned his gaze to Margret, the head maid still teetering on the edge of an explosive meltdown.
"Margret," Kain started, the head maid quickly snapping out of her raging stupor as she gazed up at him. "Starting today, you will allow Loraine to serve under you, as I will be promoting her to the position of Upper Maid." He announced to everyone present, Marget’s eyes widening in shock as she heard his words.
Her eyes snapped to Loraine, who was as equally as surprised as she was, as her breath hitched in her throat, eyes wide as she had expected herself to be executed on the spot, not receive a promotion of all things.
’W...what?’ Loraine thought with a nervous laugh escaping her lips. ’He’s not serious right....? This is me we’re talking about...’
Margret was about to protest, but Kain cut her off as he proceeded to continue.
"She will be permitted to having access to the kitchen, and will be allowed to operate on the higher floors of the mansion as well." He said, turning to face Margret. "Loraine has not proven herself suitable for the position of Head Maid, even if she has awakened the same Class as you have."
"However, now that Loraine has awakened to being a [Sacred Maid], I want you all to begin treating her equally and start showing her respect, as her status of being unawakened is no more."
"Am I clear?"
Margret remained silent for a moment, still dumbfounded by the things she was hearing. Respect Loraine? The trash maid? The good-for-nothing maid suddenly needs to be respected, all because she has the same class as her?
"....." Margret grit her teeth, absolutely fuming at the idea of such a thing. But even as angry as she was, it was still a direct order coming from the lord of the mansion, and she had on choice but to obey.
"Yes sir..." Margret said, her voice almost as soft as a whisper as she gave one last piercing glare to Loraine, as she viewed her as a threat to everything she had established.
Loraine on the other hand was struggle to take everything in, her mind racing with all the implications of her added responsibilities. Before she could think of her next logical step in her plans, the voice of the system in her mind chimed like a loud bell, causing her to blink in surprise.
