Chapter 49: Sacred Maid
’There’s no way....right?’ Margret thought to herself, sweating profusely as she recalled the situation. The fact that Loraine had dared to oppose her, expose her, and even cook so well was nothing short of staggering to the head maid.
She glanced back at Kain, the nobleman engaged in a talk with his family as she thought of the punishment she was going to receive, all because Loraine dared expose her to the family.
’That girl....’ Margret heaved in anger, her knuckles turning white as she clenched her fists at her sides, fuming with uncontrollable rage.
She didn’t want to believe that Loraine could’ve awakened, that the useless maid had now possessed extraordinary culinary abilities out of nowhere, it was all too sudden, even she wasn’t aware of it all.
’So the chefs knew all along...’ She thought, glancing over at Christine and the other chefs as they were together, the young cook feeling a piercing glare that made her skin crawl, as Margret stared her down with monstrous intensity.
’Uh oh...’ Christine thought nervously, gulping as she glanced away, not wanting to be Margret’s target for the second time, especially after enduring the brutal verbal assault last night.
After a short time has passed, Loraine returned back to the dining hall, carrying a large tray of items and delicacies. The moment she entered, the energy in the room immediately shifted, as a delicious, heavenly, and mouth watering aroma immediately hit the noses of everyone present, everyone’s eyes widening in surprise.
"Yay!" Lilith said in joy as she sniffed the delicious smell, throwing her arms up in celebration as her heterochromia eyes twinkled like stars.
A small smug smile bloomed on Christine’s face as she smelled the aroma, glancing over at the noble family as she knew they already had their doubts and questions answered from that alone.
"Here we are," Loraine said, beginning to serve the food as she went around the table and presented her dishes, the sights of the meals alone to make the Ashbournes start salivating, as the presentation alone was more than enough evidence to signify the truth behind Loraine’s claim.
Loraine then moved over to the napkins, walking behind Kain Ashbourne as she stood behind him, preparing to tie the cloth around his neck, Margret’s eyes widening with shock and the sheer audacity behind Loraine’s act of servitude.
She was in no such place to do such a thing, that role was reserved for her alone!
"May I?" Loraine asked, the question feeling like a foreign language on her tongue. The fact she even had the courage to do this was beyond staggering, a lower maid having the audacity of performing an action suited for higher ranking ones, of directly serving the family. It was stupidly brave of her, and equally as insulting.
But Kain’s reaction was different, normally he would’ve felt insulted that someone like Loraine had dared even ask such a question, but today was different. It was more than obvious that Loraine wasn’t the same woman they had looked down upon anymore, and the delicious meals she had presented them with again proved that she had abilities they weren’t aware of.
At least not yet.
"Proceed," Kain said, giving the white haired maiden permission, a baffled Margret watching on at the side as she tied the napkin around Kain’s neck, proceeding to do the same with every member of the Ashbourne family.
’What...what is going on?’ Margret watched on in horror, not being able to believe her eyes.
She watched as Loraine moved from Kain, to the young mistress Lilith, the mistress of the Ashbournes, Cecillia, and finally young master Valmont himself.
Loraine stood still for a moment when she came from Valmont, her mood immediately turning sour, and her aura radiating a fierce hatred and malice for the man in front of her. Her hands trembled near his neck, not from fear, but from the overwhelming urge to just grab his neck and rip his head off with her bare hands.
Valmont returned her gaze, the tension between the two reaching it’s boiling point, as memories of what he had done to her and Sarah resurfacing in her mind made her tremble with uncontrollable rage.
’Calm down Loraine...you can’t do anything right now.’ She exhaled slowly, calming herself down as she finally worked up the intent to tie the napkin around his neck, stepping back to join the rest of the chefs and Christine as she stood back.
"Awww...." Lilith whined, seeing that her meal consisted of fruits and cooked vegetables, the one thing she loathed so much. "I want pie! I don’t want to eat these yucky vegies!" Lilith said, crossing her arms as she pouted, refusing to touch her food, even with how delicious it all smelled.
Lilith glanced at Loraine, the maid who was responsible for this disaster, trying to give her an angry glare, but if anything it just made her look cute.
Loraine laughed upon seeing this, finding the sight utterly adorable. She smiled warmly at the young mistress, using her hands to signal Lilith to eat the vegetables, the young mistress shaking her head vehemently as she refused to eat these yucky greens.
’Oh come on! Don’t be like that!’ Loraine thought inwardly, getting desperate. While she wanted to shower Lilith with all the sweetness in the world, she still needed her nutrition sometimes, and more importantly, she wanted to avoid getting into trouble like Christine did according to some of the cooks.
Loraine clasped her hands together, practically begging the young mistress to try her food. Lilith sighed in defeat, rolling her eyes as she would finally give the meal a try, grabbing a fork as she nervously poked at a Brussel sprout.
The Brussel Sprout was well seasoned, and it smelled really good too, but Lilith knew not to trust the smell of vegetables, as she still believed them to be very yucky!
"Here goes..." Lilith gulped nervously, using her fork to pick up the sprout as shoved it into her mouth, closing her eyes as she prepared herself for the taste. But to her surprise, it actually tasted really good.
"!?" Lilith blinked in amazement, the flavors exploding on her tongue as she began to eat up all the vegetables, the sight surprising everyone present at the table as they never saw Lilith get over her dislike for vegetables so easily.
Kain and the other family members also began to eat their meals, and just as they had expected, it was absolutely wonderful, clearing Loraine’s name of any possibility of there being lies.
’So it’s true...’ Kain thought, glancing over at Loraine. ’She really was involved in last night’s preparation, and the fact she did all of the work is even more staggering.’ He thought, glancing over at the chefs beside Loraine, his eyes landing on Christine.
’But would they lie, why take credit for something they didn’t do?’ He thought about it for a moment as he ate. ’Did they simply want the rewards, or were they trying to perhaps protect Loraine? How long have they known about her abilities? And why were none of us informed until now.’
Kain was growing suspicious, he knew about these games very well, given how he was active in the political space regarding their families. He wasn’t stupid to just ignore the signs of something brewing in the shadows, as it was often that details like that could often come back to prove very troublesome.
’I feel a bit bad for Leon, he basically rewarded the wrong person.’ Kain chuckled to himself, shaking his head.
’Unlucky bastard.’
The family soon finished their breakfast, again, the meal this time around being far more delicious than the previous food the other chefs had served them before. Loraine watched the family place their utensils down, as everyone’s eyes were on her.
Kain had gotten his desired proof, it was undeniable that Loraine had definitely awakened some ability to help her cook so well, or by the grace of the gods, managed to practice to such a degree to outperform every other chef in the house, while being unawakened.
"First of all," Kain started, directing his focus onto Loraine. "Thank you for the wonderful breakfast you’ve prepared." He said, thanking Loraine personally as Loraine bowed her head to show respect.
"Of course, I’m simply repaying what I owe." Loraine said gracefully, raising her head once more.
"Now that you’ve proved your abilities, do you mind telling everyone gathered here what class you awakened, and if you have awakened a Talent along with it." Kain asked the direct question, leaning forward in his chair.
Margret glanced over at Loraine, her focus on the girl who solely managed to ruin her reputation in front of the most important people in her life, paying close attention.
Loraine smirked, there was no more hiding it now. She glanced briefly at Margret, the head maid seeing the cocky expression on the young maiden’s face.
"Of course sir, the Class I’ve awakened with is...." Loraine said, pointing at Margret with her finger.
"The same class as hers." She announces casually, referring to Margret as the whole room goes dead silent, shock plastering everyone’s faces.
