’.....’ Lorraine stared at the system notification in front of her eyes, hands twitching as she took in the information relayed to her. Her task count had been returned to normal, as Margret’s punishment was rendered null, and additionally greater rewards have been added.
’This...this is insane.’ Loraine thought, a spark of excitement, pride, and triumph all welling up in her chest at the same time as she clenched her fists in happiness. A bright smile blooming on her face.
Christine noticed the joy radiating off of Loraine, a smile forming on her own lips as she felt proud of Loraine for finally receiving her promotion and getting the respect she had been missing all her life.
’I guess Loraine’s title of being the trash of the Ashbourne family dies today, huh?’ Christine thought to herself, her mind drifting toward Loraine being in the kitchen beside her and the chefs, a sense of joy blooming in her chest as she couldn’t wait to be working alongside her, as she had grown a deep admiration for Loraine’s culinary skills.
’Oh man! I can’t wait to learn more from someone as talented as her!’ She thought with a slight giggle.
"You all may be excused, thank you all for your contribution to today’s breakfast." Kain said, a small smirk blooming on his face as he corrected his mistake. "Or should I say, breakfasts?"
The room erupted in a shared laugh, the tense situation finally easing from everyone’s shoulders as the chefs, Loraine, and Margret were all excused, packing up the dishes and making their way out of the dining hall.
As soon as they were out of the dining hall, Christine jumped onto Loraine, wrapping the white haired maiden in a sudden hug that caught her off guard, Loraine’s whole body tensing up reflexively as if she had dipped herself in cold water.
"Congrats!" Christine congratulated her, a happy squeel tearing from her throat as she laughed happily. "You’re finally an official maid now! I can’t wait to work alongside you." She said, her sudden burst of joy and happiness catching Loraine off guard as she had always presumed Christine as the mature type.
But right now she was acting way too childish.
’Oh not again!’ Loraine thought, her face lightning up in a hot flush of embarrassment as she struggled to maintain her hold on the dishes she was carrying. ’I’m still not used to being hugged, damn it Christine...’
Loraine smiled awkwardly, an odd laugh tearing from her throat. "Thanks...I really appreciate it." She said, the brown haired maiden finally letting her go as they began to walk side by side.
The remaining chefs and cooks soon huddled up around Loraine, everyone congratulating her on her promotion and looking forward to having her as their colleague and personal head chef.
"You were amazing today! Congrats on the promotion!" A cook said.
"Yeah, you never fail to impress us!" Another added.
"Didn’t she only cook yesterday? You guys are praising her too much..."
"You should become our new headchef, we could all learn alot from you!"
Loraine felt a bit uncomfortable from all the praise she was getting, the small crowd of people circling her as they moved feeling like a trapped cage as she felt really awkward, not knowing how to respond to this much attention and adoration.
A small blush formed on her cheeks, a huge sense of triumph blooming in her chest as she glanced down at her hand, the same hand that belonged to the previous Loraine. She had finally broken the curse she had always carried, and she was no longer useless, a waste of space, an unawakened being.
Her fingers balled up as she clenched her fist, a surge of determination coursing through her veins as she had finally earned her first major accomplishment in this brand new world, her eyes shining like stars as she smiled proudly.
"Thanks guys," Loraine said, a level of shyness in her tone. "It really means alot." She said with a small laugh.
Christine nudged her arm playfully, smirking at how shy Loraine was when it came to too much attention. "Awww, are you blushing? You really can’t handle all this praise, can you? Head chef~" Christine said with a playful tone, the new title making Loraine’s face explode from embarrassment as she snapped back immediately.
"Head chef!? Don’t call me that!" Loraine said embarrassed, "You can’t just replace someone so important with me all of a sudden." She said, shaking her head vehemently at the idea, Christine letting out a laugh at the notion.
Behind them however, the atmosphere was different. While the chefs were huddled around Loraine while she moved, basking her in a warmth she hadn’t felt in so many years, Margret radiated a malevolent anger, eyes staring at the group, and in particular, Loraine with hatred swirling in her depths.
She moved through the halls, walking past several other maids as they felt the sheer bloodlust burning off her form, sending shivers down the spines of those she passed, some instinctively parting to create space for her to move.
She recalled Kain’s words, as shortly after Loraine and her group left, she was summoned to come to his office later, as she was going to be receiving her punishment. She acted out of line, and created a scene in front of everyone present, it was unbecoming of her to exude such violent behavior, even if the cause of her behaviour was Loraine, who everyone had previously disliked.
’Deal with me later...’
’Damn girl...what am I gonna do with her?’ She shook her head, heaving a tired sigh as she walked past Alice and Beatrice, the two women noticing the unpleasant mood she was currently in.
"Oh! Margret!" Alice cooed, her tone light and cheerful as she gently latched onto the old woman’s shoulders."What’s wrong? Did something happen?" She asked, trying to cheer up the head maid.
"Nothing’s going on, you should get back to work Alice." Margret responded, reluctant to talk about it. Alice only took her words for a sign that something deeper was going on, as she was more determined to find out what really bothered her so much.
"Don’t be so mean Margret~" Beatrice said, her voice dripping like honey as she spoke. "You can tell us what’s bothering you, you know we care about you alot~" She smiled warmly. "So tell us, what’s going on?"
Margret sighed, the last of her defenses crumbling away as she finally gave up. She placed her hands on her hips as she gazed down, shaking her head to herself.
"Loraine has awakened." She announced to the two girls, the weight of her words striking them like thunder as the playful and cheerful energy they exuded immediately died, their bodies tensing as their eyes widened in surprise. But Margret wasn’t done yet.
"And not only has she awakened, but she has also become a [Sacred Maid]." She said, gritting her teeth as her rage began to flare up once more. "She will be serving under me, along with the both of you, and from here on out, we’ll be forced to start treating her as an....equal." The last words left her mouth with a sour taste, feeling disgusted at the idea.
Alice couldn’t believe her ears, her world shattering around her as she took a step back, eyes wide with fear. Loraine had awakened, the one thing she had dreaded so much had become a reality, and not only did she awaken, but she was the same class as Margret?
They didn’t even have a chance to spy on her yet, the news blowing them away as if they had been struck by lightning.
Beatrice glanced over at Alice instinctively, taking in her friends horrified sight. Their plans had already been ruined before they could initiate them, and Alice was already starting to crumble from the inside as she shook her head to herself, refusing to believe the situation.
’Shit...what now?’ Beatrice thought, as word of Loraine’s awakening began to spread at a rapid pace.
The useless maid was gone, and in her place something far greater had come to light.
