Revenge Karma: She Broke Our Childhood Promise, But Her Tomboy Best-friend Saved Me.

The Weight of Silence

(PoV—Shin)

The bedroom door clicked shut, and the sound echoed in my skull like a gunshot.

My legs felt like they were made of water; I couldn't feel their weight.

I stumbled away from the red light, walking down the hallway as if I were fleeing a burning building, but there was no smoke.

The only thing that I felt was the scent of her. Sandalwood, cedar, and the sharp, minty ghost of her breath. It was everywhere, glued to my skin, filling my lungs, and infecting the part of my brain that still couldn't process what had just happened.

I leaned my back against the hallway wall, feeling the cold wood against my bare skin—I had forgotten to put the silk shirt back on. Or maybe I just didn't want to. I didn't know anything anymore. I had just thrown the shirt on the sofa.

Then, my eyes moved down, and I noticed that the hand that touched her waist and felt her heartbeat beneath her ribs was still trembling.

'God,' I whispered to the empty space.

That was just the only sound my throat could manage to produce.

My head was a chaotic slideshow of images—her lips, her golden eyes dilated with raw hunger, the way she had whispered my name as if it were a spell. And then... the way she had stopped me. Her hands on my cheeks, pulling me out of the fire.

"I want you to be sure." Her voice echoed in my mind, multiple times.

Was I sure? I didn't know. A dark, ugly knot of anxiety twisted in my stomach.

'Why did she stop? Did I do something wrong? Did she look at my face and changed idea about me?'

A sudden, chilling wave of rejection washed over me.

For seven years, Kurone had trained me to believe that if someone pulled away, it was because I wasn't good enough. Because I had failed. Because I was a burden.

I clenched my fists.

Was Akane the same? Or was she different?

I didn't know. I couldn't tell anymore.

"Shin?"

Her voice came from behind the closed bedroom door, slightly muffled but still possessing that dark, commanding velvet tone, snapping me back to reality.

I swallowed hard, pushing myself off the wall. "Y-Yeah?"

"When the delivery guy gets here, tell him to put it on my tab. Tell him Akane will pay for it tomorrow," she said. There was a slight tremor in her voice, a subtle unevenness that I hadn't heard before. "And... keep the door closed for a bit. I...I need to change."

"Okay," I replied, my voice sounding hollow.

I walked to the kitchen, the cold neon light a harsh contrast to the crimson crucible I had just escaped, and it felt like another world. A normal place where normal people do normal things.

I picked up my phone and dialed the local ramen shop.

"Hello, Ichiraku Ramen, what can I get for you?" a cheerful voice answered.

"Uh... two Tonkotsu ramen. Extra spicy," I said, staring blankly at the wall. "Put it on Akane's tab at apartment 402. She said she'll pay tomorrow."

"You got it! Twenty minutes."

I hung up. The phone felt hot against my cheek.

Then, I walked over to the living room and sat heavily on the grey sofa, with the silence of the apartment pressing in on me.

I kept silent for ten minutes, the bedroom door firmly shut.

In those moments, my mind started to swing with a lot of intrusive thoughts.

'She's regretting it. I pushed too far. She's changing her clothes because she wants to put a barrier back up.' I leaned forward, burying my face in my hands, the familiar weight of self-loathing threatening to drag me back into the abyss.

Then, I heard the click of the door handle.

I sat up straight, seeing Akane walking out.

She was wearing an oversized black hoodie that swallowed her frame, the sleeves pulled down over her knuckles, and her charcoal hair was a messy, beautiful disaster.

She didn't look at me right away; she kept her eyes on the floor as she walked into the living room.

I stood up, not knowing what to do with my hands. "Akane, I—"

Before I could finish the apology that was forming on my lips, she closed the distance between us.

She stepped behind me, wrapping her arms securely around my waist, and pressed her face into the center of my bare back.

The breath caught in my throat.

"You're overthinking so loudly I can hear it through the walls," she mumbled against my skin.

"I thought... I thought you realized you didn't want this," I whispered, the vulnerability bleeding into my voice. "I thought I messed up."

"You idiot," she sighed, her grip on my waist tightening.

As she held me, I felt something pressing against my ribs.

Not a shiver from the cold, but a deep, muscular quiver, like a bowstring released after holding too much tension for too long.

I didn't know why.

I wanted to ask, but the words got stuck in my throat.

She hadn't pushed me away because she didn't want me... right?

Then why? Why did she stop? Why is she shaking?

My mind spun. Maybe she was just nervous. Maybe she regretted it. Maybe —

"Stop thinking," she mumbled against my back, her voice muffled by my skin. "You're doing it again."

I didn't stop. But I didn't ask either.

Her arm stayed wrapped around me, trembling, holding on like she was afraid I'd disappear.

Kurone's arms had never trembled like that. Hers were always steady, firm, demanding.

She held me like she owned me.

But Akane... Akane was shaking.

Was she scared? Nervous? Or was this something else entirely?

And for some reason — even though I didn't understand it — that trembling made me feel... wanted.

Not rejected. Not judged. Just... wanted.

I didn't know why, but I didn't need to know.

I just leaned back into her and let myself be held.

Then, during our moment, the intercom buzzed, breaking the heavy silence.

"That's the food, I guess," I said softly.

Akane let go of me, though her fingers lingered on my hips for a second longer than necessary. "I'll grab the bowls."

I paid the delivery guy—or rather, told him to put it on her tab—and brought the plastic bags inside.

Akane had set up two spots on the sofa, switching on the TV to some meaningless late-night variety show.

The television's noise filled the room, serving as a buffer against the intense electricity still crackling between us.

We sat down, the steaming bowls of extra spicy ramen resting on our laps.

Akane took a sip of her broth, her golden eyes darting toward me over the rim of the bowl, and then said, "Uh... this thing tastes so much better tonight—", before a small, teasing smirk played on her lips.

"You know, Shin..." she started, her voice light but layered with something deeper. "You're actually a really good kisser. I definitely didn't expect that from the guy who carries pink bags around all day."

I felt the heat rise to my cheeks, nearly choking on my noodles.

I looked at her, seeing the playful glint in her eyes, but also spotting the faint blush dusting her pale cheeks.

"I... well, I..." I stammered, completely disarmed.

She looked down at her bowl, stirring the noodles with her chopsticks. "And if you're wondering, that was my first kiss, by the way."

The world stopped spinning for a fraction of a second.

Her first.

Akane, the girl who looked like she could chew up and spit out any guy in our school, the girl who carried herself with an armor of pure intimidation... had given her first kiss to me.

I felt a sudden, sharp surge of pride, and a possessive warmth bloomed in my chest. I actually was the first chapter of her history.

"Really?" I asked softly.

She nodded, not looking at me. "Yeah. Never really found anyone worth the spit." She glanced up, her eyes narrowing playfully. "So, who taught you? Because I know for a fact the 'angel' kept you on a leash."

The warmth in my chest turned into something cold and sour.

The memory of my first kiss wasn't a romantic milestone. It was a tactical maneuver.

"It was Kurone," I said, my voice flattening out.

I saw Akane's jaw clench instantly, with her fingers tightening around her chopsticks. "Of course it was," she muttered, her tone dripping with sudden venom.

"But it wasn't what you think," I added quickly, needing her to understand. "It was in the third year of middle school. There was this girl, Yuki. She sat next to me in science class. She was quiet, didn't have many friends, and we started talking about this manga we both liked. I actually told Kurone I was thinking of asking Yuki to hang out with us after school."

I stared into my ramen, the spicy steam burning my eyes.

"The next day, Yuki came up to my desk to give me a book, but Kurone saw us. So, she walked right up, grabbed me by the collar, and kissed me right in front of Yuki and half the class, leaving everyone in complete shock."

Akane was completely still, her golden eyes locked onto my face.

"She didn't do it because she liked me," I said, the bitter truth tasting like ash on my tongue. "She did it to mark her territory. After that day, whenever Yuki or any other girl even looked in my direction, Kurone would hold my hand or peck me on the lips. She told me we were 'already married in her head,' so I wasn't allowed to have female friends. She stole my first kiss just so no one else could have a toy she wasn't even playing with."

I had never told anyone that story. Kurone would have been furious if she knew I was telling it. She would also have said I was 'overreacting' or 'being dramatic.'

But Akane... Akane listened. She didn't laugh. Instead, she got angry for me.

The silence on the sofa was heavy.

I felt Akane shift next to me. Her body had gone completely rigid. I could literally feel the heat of her anger radiating off her.

"What a disgusting bitch," Akane spat out in English, the foreign words carrying a raw, unfiltered hatred.

She set her bowl down on the coffee table with a loud thud. She turned to me, her eyes blazing with a fierce, protective fury. But instead of yelling, she reached out and gently cupped my cheek.

Her thumb brushed across my cheekbone, wiping away a stray tear I hadn't even realized had fallen.

"She took that from you," Akane whispered, her voice softening into a dangerous promise. "She took everything from you just to feed her ego."

"Yeah, I guess so," I breathed, leaning into her touch.

"We are going to make her regret she was ever born," Akane stated simply, as if discussing the weather.

Then, the anger in her eyes melted away, replaced by that deep, consuming hunger.

She shifted closer, eliminating the space between us, and rested her head heavily on my shoulder, her arm sliding around my waist to pull me against her side.

"Eat," she commanded softly. "The spice will burn out the bad memories."

We watched the stupid TV show as we ate. The comedians' laughter was meaningless white noise. The only things that mattered were the weight of Akane's head on my shoulder and the heat of her body pressed against mine.

I felt a strange sensation washing over me, lighter than air. It was... freedom? I didn't know, but for the first time in seven years, I wasn't hyper-analyzing my posture or wondering if I was doing something that would annoy Kurone. I was just sitting on a couch, existing, and the girl next to me wanted me exactly as I was.

Moreover, Akane couldn't seem to control her own body. Even as we ate in silence, she kept touching me.

A hand resting on my bare knee, her fingers tracing the veins on my forearm... every few minutes, she would turn her head and press a soft, lingering kiss to my jawline, or my neck, or my shoulder.

It wasn't the frantic, desperate kissing of the red room. It was affectionate, claiming.

And every time she did it, I felt another link of Kurone's invisible chain snap and fall away.

There was no malice in what she was doing; I could feel it. And it made me feel way better.

Then I also felt Akane take my hand and hold it as a lover would. I let her do whatever she wanted, because... maybe I wanted it too.

Akane and I stayed silent for most of the time, letting all these gestures speak for us.

The only thing she said was "Let me stay like this for a while, please," with a softness I've never heard before.

By the time we finished the ramen, the exhaustion of the day—the emotional whiplash, the adrenaline, the crying—finally caught up to me.

My eyelids felt like they were made of lead.

"Come on, baby boy," Akane said, taking my empty bowl and standing up. "Bedtime."

I didn't argue or offer to sleep on the sofa. I just followed her into the bedroom.

The red lights were off, replaced by the soft, ambient glow of the streetlights filtering through the blinds, and the room smelled deeply of her, a comforting cocoon that promised safety.

We climbed under the dark duvet. The air was cold, but the moment our bodies touched, the chill vanished.

I lay on my back, and Akane immediately gravitated toward me. She rested her head directly over my heart, her arm draped across my stomach, her leg thrown over mine to lock me in place.

I wrapped my arms around her, holding her tightly against my chest.

Akane then reached up, her fingers finding my hair, and began that slow, rhythmic stroking again.

"Sleep, Shin," she whispered into my skin. "I've got you."

And then, I finally closed my eyes.

The darkness wasn't scary anymore, and it wasn't filled with the echoing laughter of the Café de Rose or the blinding glare of a gold ring. It was filled with the steady rhythm of Akane's breathing and the gentle, hypnotic movement of her fingers.

I saw sharp, jagged black hair, silver piercings catching the light, and golden eyes looking at me like I was the only man on earth.

For the first time in seven years, the face behind my closed eyelids wasn't Kurone's.

I didn't know if that meant I was healing or just replacing one obsession with another. But tonight... tonight I didn't care.

I fell asleep inhaling the scent of cedar and sandalwood, feeling, finally, as I had come home.

(A night passes)

The morning light was a clinical, icy grey, filtering through the gaps in the blinds and painting sharp lines across the acoustic foam on the walls.

I woke up slowly. The bed was warm, but the heavy, comforting weight on my chest was gone.

I blinked, rubbing my eyes, feeling a strange absence of the usual crushing anxiety that accompanied my mornings.

My phone and Kurone didn't matter.

I sat up, stretching my arms, and then noticed a clean, black t-shirt folded neatly on the edge of the bed. I pulled it over my head, the fabric smelling faintly of Akane's laundry detergent.

Then, I walked out of the bedroom with my bare feet padding softly against the hardwood floor.

The smell of freshly brewed coffee and toasted bread filled the apartment as I walked into the kitchen.

Akane was standing by the counter, already dressed for the day—black cargo pants, a tight black long-sleeve shirt, and her heavy combat boots already laced up.

Her hair was a messy, sharp halo around her face, and her silver earrings glinted in the morning light.

She had set two mugs of coffee and a plate with toast and scrambled eggs on the small table.

Akane turned around as I entered, leaning her hip against the counter.

Her golden eyes swept over me, taking in my messy hair and the shirt she had left for me.

The look on her face wasn't the soft vulnerability of the night before. It was the sharp, calculating look of the Akane everyone knew.

She picked up her coffee mug, taking a slow sip without ever taking her eyes off me.

And then, a slow, malicious smile spread across her lips. It was a smile that promised absolute destruction for anyone who stood in her way.

"Eat up, ghost boy," she said, her voice a low, thrilling purr that sent a shiver down my spine.

"Yeah... thank you," I replied, while scratching the back of my head.

Akane then set the mug down and walked toward me, stopping just inches away.

She reached out, her fingers adjusting the collar of my shirt, her touch possessive and final, before tilting her head, with her golden eyes burning into mine.

"So... are you ready for the next step toward your happiness, Shin?" She asked.
