Revenge Karma: She Broke Our Childhood Promise, But Her Tomboy Best-friend Saved Me.

The Ghost in the Crimson Light (Akane POV)

The red light was no longer just a color; it was a pulse, throbbing against my eyelids, synchronized with the frantic, heavy beat of my heart and the rhythmic pressure of Shin's body against mine.

The sanctuary had become a crucible, a pressurized chamber where the oxygen was being replaced by the scent of sandalwood, sweat, and a raw, jagged desperation that threatened to shatter us both.

Shin wasn't just kissing me anymore. He was consuming me.

He moved with the terrifying fluidity of an automaton, a machine fueled by a cocktail of betrayal and instinct.

The feeling of his skin on mine was driving me insane.

His mouth left mine, tracing a path of fire down the line of my jaw, moving toward the hollow of my throat.

I let out a jagged, broken breath as his lips found the sensitive column of my neck—my greatest weakness, the one place where I had never let anyone linger.

I felt the sharp, electric jolt of his teeth grazing my skin, and my back arched instinctively off the duvet.

A low, guttural moan escaped my throat—a sound I didn't recognize as my own, and my hands, which had been clutching his shoulders, slid upward to tangle in his hair, instinctively pulling him closer, demanding more.

I tilted my head to the side, baring my neck to him, offering him the most vulnerable part of myself in an act of total surrender I hadn't planned for.

His hands were moving now, sliding down from my shoulders to my ribs, his fingers splayed wide as if he were trying to map the very architecture of my soul.

Every touch was a brand, and every single breath he exhaled against my skin made me shiver with a hunger that had been dormant for seven years.

Then, Shin shifted his weight, his hips pressing into the junction of my thighs. The friction was agonizingly perfect, and I could feel the heat of him through the thin fabric of my shorts, a physical demand that made my head spin and my vision blur.

'I want you... so much...'

I didn't know why Shin was this good. For an instant, I wondered if it was because he had never experienced something like that, and he was releasing everything he had inside.

But my thoughts immediately moved aside.

'Finally... finally...' my body screamed. 'After the years of silence, after the thousands of hours of watching him from afar, after the agonizing torture of seeing him with her... he is here. He is taking me.'

But as I pulled him closer, my fingers digging into his scalp, I felt a sudden, icy shiver of lucidity pierce through the fog of desire.

I looked up at him, forcing my eyes to open, to really see him in the flickering red glow.

Shin's eyes were dilated, the pupils nearly swallowing the dark iris, but they weren't focused on me.

Not really. They were wide and glassy, filled with a blue-white flame that looked more like shock than passion.

He was moving, kissing, touching—but it was the movement of a man in a trance, acting out of a primal need to overwrite the pain, to drown out the memory of the "angel" with the first available anchor. I could feel it.

Shin wasn't seeing Akane, the girl who had waited seven years in the shadows. He was seeing an escape, a way to forget.

And that was when the knife twisted in my gut.

He leaned down again, his mouth seeking mine with a desperate hunger, his body tensing for the final transition. I felt his hand slide toward the waistband of my shorts, his breathing coming in short, pained gasps.

"Shin..." I whispered.

He didn't stop, seeming not to hear me. He was lost in the "static," his body moving on autopilot, driven by the sheer, crushing weight of Kurone's betrayal.

The masterpiece was in progress, but the foundation was still wet with the tears he refused to cry.

"Shin, wait," I said, more firmly this time.

I reached up and placed my hands on his cheeks, feeling the heat of his skin, the slight stubble beginning to form on his jaw.

I forced him to lift his head, to break the contact of our bodies for just a second.

He looked at me, for real, and my heart broke into a million jagged pieces.

In that crimson light, I saw the face of a boy who had been murdered.

There was no joy in his eyes. Only a hollow, aching void and the frantic reflex of a drowning man grabbing at the nearest hand. He looked like a ghost trying to find a body to inhabit.

A single, silent tear escaped his eye, tracing a path down his cheek before falling onto my own. It felt like a drop of liquid lead, hot and heavy with all the words he couldn't say.

I realized then, with a devastating clarity, that if I let this continue—if I let him take me now, in this state—I would never truly have him. I would only be the replacement, the girl who took advantage of a broken man to satisfy a seven-year obsession. I would be no better than the parsimonious parasite who had used him for her own ego.

'I won't be a replacement,' I told myself, my grip on his face softening into something infinitely more tender. 'I won't be the shadow of her vanilla rot.'

I pushed him, gently but with a finality that he couldn't ignore.

"Wait," I whispered.

Shin blinked, the glassiness in his eyes flickering as he was suddenly yanked back into the reality of the room.

He looked confused, his breathing still ragged, his body still tense with the biological drive I had ignited.

"Akane... I... I'm sorry, I didn't mean to—" He tried to say, clearly in panic.

"Shh," I interrupted, my thumb tracing the line of his lower lip. I felt the tremor there, the raw vulnerability that he tried so hard to hide. I smiled at him—not the malicious, predatory smile I showed the world, but something soft, something human. "Look at me, Shin."

He focused on me, the blue-white flame dimming into a deep, searching dark.

"I want you," I said, the confession feeling like a weight being lifted from my chest. "I have wanted you since the first day of middle school. I have watched you for seven years, waiting for the day you would finally see me."

Shin's breath hitched. "Akane..."

"But I don't want you like this," I continued, my fingers sliding back into his hair, caressing his scalp. "I don't want you as a ghost. I don't want to be the person you use to drown out her laughter."

I pulled his face down, pressing a soft, lingering kiss to his forehead. It wasn't the kiss of a lover; it was the kiss of a guardian.

"I want you to be sure, Shin. I want you to be able to look at me and see me, not the absence of her. I want you to be able to smile when we do this. I want it to be because you truly want me, not because you hate her."

I felt the tension leave his body in a single, massive wave of exhaustion.

He slumped against me, his forehead resting on my shoulder, and felt the heat of another tear soak into my skin.

He was a masterpiece under construction, and I was the only one who cared enough to do it right.

"I've waited seven years, Shin," I whispered into the darkness, my voice cracking just a little. "I can wait until the memory of her is nothing but ash in the wind."

I moved my hands to his shoulders and pushed him gently. He rolled off me, landing on his back beside me on the dark duvet.

We lay there in silence, the only sounds the rhythmic ticking of the clock and the steady, relentless drumming of the rain against the windowpane.

The crimson light dimmed, the intensity of the moment fading into a heavy, comfortable quiet.

Despite my decision to stop, my body was still screaming to start again, to claim him, as my lower part was literally dripping and throbbing.

I wanted my first time to be with him. But if it had happened now, I wouldn't have been the last.

The only thing I could do was nothing more than act like nothing had happened.

"S-Shin, can you order the ramen for me? I have the number of my favorite place attached on my fridge," I said finally. My voice was cold again—controlled, distant, the "Akane" the school knew. But my hands were still trembling under the covers.

I felt him turn his head to look at me in the dark, but I didn't look back, because I couldn't.

If I looked at him now, I would pull him back to me and forget all my noble intentions.

"Akane—"

"Go, Shin, please," I said, my voice cracking on his name. Just slightly. Just enough for him to hear the terror beneath the command. "Order the food. Whatever you want, but extra spicy for me. I need the burn."

I felt him hesitate for a long, agonizing pause.

Then, I heard the creak of the bed as he got up. The floorboards groaned under his weight. I heard him rustling as he picked up the shirt from the floor.

The bedroom door opened, a sliver of yellow light from the hallway cutting through the red gloom, and then it closed.

I was alone.

I didn't move for a long time. I just lay there, staring at the ceiling, my breathing still ragged, my skin still tingling from where his mouth had been.

"That was so fuckin' close," I whispered to the empty room.

Too close.

I looked down at my hands. They were still shaking violently. I clenched them into fists, digging my nails into my palms until the pain grounded me.

I had never wanted anyone the way I wanted him. Not in seven years of longing. Not in a lifetime of cynicism.

The way he looked at me, the way he touched me... it was a drug, and I was already addicted. But I knew the rules of the game. If I took the shortcut now, I would lose the long game.

I wanted him completely. I wanted his heart, his mind, and his soul. I wanted him to belong to me the way he had belonged to her—but better.

I wanted him to be obsessed. I wanted him to realize that the "angel" was a paper doll compared to the fire I could offer him.

"I'll wait," I murmured, a dark, velvet promise to the shadows. "I'll be the perfect sanctuary. I'll let you see the rot until you can't stand the smell of her. And then... when you're finally, truly empty..."

I closed my eyes, a slow, malicious smirk returning to my face.

"...I'll fill you up with me until you can't breathe without my permission."
