Revenge Karma: She Broke Our Childhood Promise, But Her Tomboy Best-friend Saved Me.

The Stray Dog

The sharp aroma of freshly brewed black coffee and toasted bread filled the small kitchen, completely overriding the lingering shadows of the night before.

After Akane adjusted the collar of my shirt and asked me that question, I sat at the small table, in silence, not knowing what to answer in that moment.

I was still wearing the dark shirt I found near my bed.

It fitted perfectly, wrapping around me like a second skin, carrying the faint, intoxicating scent of cedar and peppermint.

Akane stood across from me, leaning her hip against the kitchen counter, and her golden eyes were locked onto mine, a slow, malicious smile spreading across her lips.

The morning light caught the silver hoops in her ears, making her look dangerous and divine all at once.

"I'll ask again. Are you ready for the next step toward your happiness, Shin?" she asked, again. Her voice was a low, thrilling purr.

I took a sip of my coffee, the bitter liquid grounding me.

The anxiety that had usually accompanied my mornings for the past seven years, for the fear of not making Kurone wait, was completely gone. In its place was a cold, quiet void, waiting to be filled with whatever she instructed.

"I'm ready," I said. My voice was steady. "Tell me what to do."

Akane's smile widened, showing a hint of white teeth.

Then she set her mug down and walked around the counter, pulling out the chair next to mine, but she didn't sit normally; she turned the chair backward and straddled it, resting her arms on the backrest and leaning in close.

"There's a slight change of plans for today," she murmured. "I know that I told you to go in alone. I told you to stand by her side, carry her bags, and absorb the rot until you hated her guts. And you did beautifully, far beyond expectations. So, today, we're going to pivot."

I frowned slightly, confusion breaking through my calm. "A change of plans? But... you said the only way to kill the boy I used to be was to let her show me exactly how little I meant to her. You said I needed to do it alone until I couldn't take it anymore."

"Oh, you're still going to hate her," Akane chuckled, reaching out to trace the rim of my coffee mug with her index finger. "Trust me, she's going to get much, much worse. But today, we aren't just letting her feed on you. Today, we're going to plant a very specific, very toxic seed in her mind."

"A... seed?" I asked, confused.

"Doubt," Akane said, her eyes flashing with a predatory brilliance. "Narcissists like Kurone operate on absolute certainty. She is certain that you belong to her and that no matter what she does, you will be waiting in the wings. She thinks she can parade Kenji around and keep you as a pet. We are going to break that certainty."

She leaned in closer, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "We are going to walk through the front gates together, but we aren't going to hold hands—that's too obvious, too easy for her to dismiss as fake. We are just going to stand close. Very close. The kind of close that implies a shared secret. I will do the talking. You will keep your eyes down, or you will keep them on me and not look at her. Understood?"

I swallowed hard, the magnitude of the shift hitting me. "You want her to think... we're together?"

"I want her not to know what to think," Akane corrected smoothly. "I want her to panic. And when a girl like her panics, she makes mistakes, revealing her ugly, rotten core faster. It'll save us a lot of time."

I nodded, the logic clicking into place. I didn't care about the collateral damage anymore. I only cared about following her instructions, "O-Okay. I'll follow your lead."

"Good boy," she whispered, patting my cheek with a touch so gentle it made my breath hitch. "Now finish your breakfast. The curtain goes up in twenty minutes."

"Y-Yeah..." I said, while eating the scrambled eggs with the fresh bread.

Every taste of her food was... delicious.

After finishing, I quickly walked to the bathroom to look for my school uniform and saw it perfectly folded on a stool.

'What...? When did she—' I asked myself, but my thoughts stopped as soon as I saw the clock.

7.30 A.M. I had to be fast.

After preparing, Akane and I finally walked out together.

The walk to school felt entirely different from yesterday.

Yesterday, despite Akane's presence for the first half, I had been marching toward a guillotine, dragging the weight of my broken promises behind me.

Today, I was walking into a war zone, but I had a general by my side.

We walked through the city's bustling streets, and the morning air was crisp and biting, but I didn't feel the cold.

Akane walked right beside me, with our shoulders brushing with almost every step.

There was a magnetic gravity between us, a physical pull that made the space of a few inches feel charged with electricity.

I kept catching the scent of her sandalwood, a constant, comforting reminder of the sanctuary waiting for me at the end of the day.

As the tall iron gates of the school came into view, the familiar hum of student chatter washed over us, but the "static" in my head didn't return. I felt grounded, and it felt lethal.

"Eyes on me, Shin," Akane murmured under her breath as we approached the entrance. "Showtime."

I shifted my gaze from the concrete pavement to the side of her face, watching the sharp line of her jaw, and the relaxed, confident way she carried herself.

And then, I saw her in my peripheral vision.

Kurone was there, just like always, leaning against the main brick pillar of the gate.

She was playing with the hem of her pristine school skirt, her strawberry-blonde hair perfectly styled, the gold ring gleaming obnoxiously on her left hand. She was probably waiting for Kenji, or maybe for me, so she could give me my daily list of chores and emotional burdens.

As we stepped onto the school grounds, Kurone looked up.

The transformation on her face was instantaneous.

The practiced, radiant "angel" smile froze, then slowly melted into a mask of pure, unadulterated confusion. Her large eyes darted from me, then to Akane, and then back to me.

She pushed herself off the pillar, taking a hesitant step forward.

"S-Shin...?" she called out, her voice faltering, with her eyes still darting between us, but not to our eyes. "Akane...? Are you... did you guys arrive together?"

I did exactly as I was told. I didn't look at her or acknowledge her presence. I just kept my eyes entirely fixed on Akane, my expression a blank, unreadable slate.

Akane stopped walking, turning to Kurone, and a smile blossomed on her face.

It wasn't the sharp, cynical smirk she usually wore. It was a sweet, radiant smile—the kind of smile a predator wears right before it sinks its teeth into the jugular.

"Ah, Kurone! Morning," Akane said, her tone dripping with casual cheerfulness.

Instead of stepping toward her "best friend," Akane turned fully toward me.

She reached up, her hand sliding smoothly into my hair, running her fingers through the dark strands, adjusting a piece that had fallen over my forehead. It was a casual, domestic gesture, so profoundly intimate that I heard several nearby students stop talking to stare.

"I found this stray puppy wandering the streets," Akane continued, her hand lingering on the nape of my neck. "He was roaming around all alone at five in the morning, looking so sad and pathetic. So, I picked him up."

For a second, I saw Kurone's lips parting.

"P-puppy...?" Kurone stammered, her eyes wide. She looked at me, silently begging for the context, demanding the reassurance I had always provided, but I didn't give her a single crumb. I just kept my eyes locked on Akane's golden gaze.

"Yeah," Akane said, her voice light and breezy as she finally dropped her hand from my neck. "He looked completely lost. So, I took him back to my place, gave him some hot breakfast, made him take a long shower, and then gave him a change of clothes."

Akane took a step closer to Kurone, invading her personal space, and leaned in, dropping her voice to a conspiratorial whisper, though it was loud enough for me.

"You know, Kurone," Akane murmured, a dangerous, playful glint in her eyes. "He looks and smells so much better when he's not drenched in that cloying stuff you use. Vanilla is way too sweet. It really doesn't suit a guy like him at all. Honestly..." Akane paused, letting the silence stretch for an agonizing second. "...I'm seriously thinking about hitting on him."

I saw that Kurone had gone completely pale, with all the blood drained from her face, leaving her looking like a porcelain doll that had just been slapped.

Then, a second later, a violent flush of crimson crept up her neck and stained her cheeks.

I knew that expression. It was the same one she had whenever she saw me talking with Yuki.

She was vibrating with a mix of terror, indignation, and profound jealousy. She didn't know whether to scream, cry, or run.

Her mouth opened, but only a strangled, high-pitched squeak came out.

Akane watched her squirm for exactly three seconds before she threw her head back and let out a loud, ringing laugh.

"I'm kidding, I'm kidding!" Akane waved her hand dismissively, though the predatory gleam never left her eyes. "Relax, Kuro. I just bought him a coffee because he looked like a zombie. Nothing scandalous."

Kurone let out a shaky, hysterical breath, her hands fluttering to her chest as she tried to force her "angel" smile back into place. "O-Oh! Ahaha! Right, of course! You really scared me there for a second, Akane! You know Shin is so naive, I was worried you were actually going to eat him alive!"

"Maybe next time," Akane winked.

She turned away from Kurone dismissively and looked at me, giving a small, commanding nod.

"Let's go, Shin, Nakamura-Sensei is waiting for us for that music project," she said.

I fell into step beside her immediately, leaving the strawberry-blonde girl standing by the pillar. We didn't look back.

But just as we passed her, Akane tossed one final grenade over her shoulder.

"See you in class, Kurone," she called out lazily. "Oh, and... nice ring."

It was for an instant, but I saw Kurone blush and hide her hand behind her back.

And, with that, me and Akane walked right into the school.
