Danmachi: The Magic Grandmaster

Chapter 96 96: Growth

After being tricked a few times, Alfia became far more vigilant and wasn't so easily fooled.

Even though Sion and Alfia's relationship had grown close, that did not mean they had reached the point where they could take a bath together.

It wasn't entirely impossible but it would be far too shameful for Alfia.

"This is so comfortable."

After seeking Hera's help to update their falna, the first thing they did upon returning to their room was take a warm bath.

Meteria and Alfia relaxed in the large tub, enjoying the warm water with their eyes half closed.

"It is a pity Sion isn't here otherwise I could have asked him to help scrub my back," Meteria sighed regretfully.

"I don't have your guts." Alfia curled her lip and said, "I'm warning you, don't try anything funny again."

"Come to think of it, I have never beaten you up since we were kids so it wouldn't be a bad idea to experience it at least once."

"Hmph, we are twins, born only minutes apart. Putting on that older sister attitude won't work on me."

Meteria giggled softly. "Besides, compared to me, you're much more childish."

"If anyone should be doing the disciplining, it should be me."

Alfia trembled in rage.

This was the first time her twin had ever said something like that to her.

"Do whatever you want, just don't cause any more trouble." Alfia tapped Meteria on the forehead, giving her one last warning.

"That hurts." Seeing Alfia actually strike her, Meteria could only look up with a pitiful expression.

"Stop pretending, I didn't use much force."

Alfia rolled her eyes in annoyance.

Damn it, what was with that pitiful look?!

Seeing Meteria's adorable, teary eyed expression.

Alfia genuinely wanted to hug her but her stubborn pride held her back.

After all, she was an aloof person who never knew how to express her feelings properly.

Meteria's behavior made her difficult to deal with.

"Hehe."

Meteria playfully stuck out her tongue, putting on a thoroughly adorable expression.

Seeing Meteria act like that, Alfia could only ignore her.

...

"Poor Alfia, being completely played with by her own angel."

Sion sat in the living room, sighing softly as if he could vividly picture the scene unfolding in the bathroom.

In fact, with his spells, he could hear the twins playing in the water even from the living room.

If Sion was willing to put aside his own shame, he could easily just walk right in.

There was no need to sneak around.

After listening to their playful banter for a short while, Sion stopped paying attention.

Instead, he began to mentally review Meteria's performance from earlier in the day to better plan for the future.

"After a single day of training, her magic basic ability increased by twenty two points and her other physical stats increased by an average of fourteen points."

"That rate of progress is pretty good."

Sion recalled Meteria's performance and carefully estimated her rate of improvement in actual combat.

He nodded with clear satisfaction. "At this rate, she can start close quarters combat training in just a few days."

Although a double digit increase might not seem like much at a glance, it was high.

It was perfectly normal for most adventurers to only see single digit increases, or even no growth after a regular trip into the dungeon.

This wasn't just because adventurers experienced slower progress as they approached their physical limits.

It was also because the vast majority of adventurers only ever operated in the relatively safe upper floors.

The root of a falna was growth through adversity.

It required accumulating combat experience and gathering high quality excelia to achieve great things.

Both of these tasks required taking genuine risks while trying to maintain a baseline of safety.

It would be absurd to expect someone to make massive progress without taking any risks.

Aside from those core factors, there were other reasons behind Meteria's rapid progress.

Her training methods played a massive role.

Because of the existence of the falna, the people of this world had grown accustomed to taking entirely too many shortcuts.

This included their approach to training their mind. They basically just cast spell repeatedly, relying entirely on the falna to grant them growth after draining their reserves.

Sion's training method was different.

...

Meteria physical abilities were constantly pushed to their limits by the gravity spell carved into her body.

Coupled with mind restoration that could rapidly restore both stamina and her mind, her progress was naturally far beyond ordinary.

Moreover, even though Meteria was clumsy at times, she truly gave it her all.

She never treated their time in the dungeon as a simple game.

"Now it is time to consider my own problem."

Sion murmured softly, turning his attention back to his own progress.

His own rate of growing stronger had begun to slow down.

The plateauing of his physical growth and the creeping stagnation of his mind were clear signs that his physical strength and mental capacity were gradually approaching their current limits.

"It's safe to say I'm getting close to my limit," Sion pondered silently.

Important changes occurred within the human brain during the learning process.

This included the formation of entirely new connections between neurons, a biological phenomenon known as neuroplasticity.

The more a person practiced, the stronger those physical connections became.

As the connections strengthened, nerve impulses and vital information were transmitted far faster and much more efficiently.
