Chapter 92: Meteria's Adventure
"She normally uses a different method to draw her sword," Sion mentioned casually.
He thought for a moment before shaking his head.
"Thinking about it carefully, the weapons I forge right now wouldn't be of much use to you."
Support weapons wouldn't do her any good and she had no need for such weapons.
The destructive power of her spells far exceeded any soul armament Sion could forge.
At least for now, he couldn't create any equipment capable of keeping up with her.
"It's almost over," Alfia kept her eyes fixed on Meteria.
From the shadows further down the corridor, two more howling monsters charged toward them.
"Frost ruin," Meteria said calmly as she watched the monsters rush forward.
While they were still a good distance away, she swung her sword.
Amidst the biting cold, massive frozen wounds tore open across the monster's bodies.
They burst into clouds of ash that quickly dispersed.
Several magic stones clattered to the ground, serving as a perfect testament to Meteria's display.
Rather than forcing her into close quarters combat, it was much better to let her build her courage by killing weaker enemies from afar.
This would allow her to slowly adapt to the rhythm of battle.
"How did I do?" After taking out the goblins, Meteria happily trotted back over to them.
Her eyes were filled with anticipation as she looked at Sion.
"Amazing!" Even though there was still plenty of room for improvement, Sion didn't hesitate to shower her with praise.
"Your movements were elegant, and your swordstyle was mesmerizing."
"I wasn't that good." Meteria knew perfectly well that her skills were full of flaws.
Hearing Sion's heavy praise made her blush shyly.
"You really were that good." Sion gently patted Meteria's head.
Forced to watch their flirting, Alfia shook her head in defeat.
She gathered her mind and casually used two magic bullets which killed a pair of kobolds hiding in the nearby shadows.
Meteria still had some major issues to work out. The most glaring problem was her terrible situational awareness.
Even in a dangerous place like the dungeon, she kept all of her attention solely focused on Sion.
On the other hand, Sion was keeping a close eye on their surroundings.
He was good at multitasking, meaning his basic vigilance was perfectly fine.
Even if Alfia hadn't intervened, Sion would have handled the threat a second later.
A simple sneak attack would never work on him.
"Let's keep up the good pace. Once you get used to the rhythm of actual combat, we can start working on how you manage your mind output," Sion lead the group further down the corridor.
Casting spells wasn't just about throwing power around.
Meteria's previous attack was excessive in both range and force. There was no need to waste so much of her mind on weak targets.
Though, it was better to play things safe for now.
They could worry about close quarters combat after she grew accustomed to wielding sode no shirayuki from a distance.
...
They soon ran into another group of monsters.
This time, it was a pack of war shadows.
Compared to the usual early floor monsters, war shadows were agile and were notorious for launching ambush attacks.
Seeing Meteria scramble in panic against the sudden assault, Sion guided her out.
"Defend!"
"White wall!" Meteria found her footing the moment she heard his voice.
She raised her sword and pointed the tip forward.
A wall of ice formed directly in front of her sword, perfectly blocking the war shadow's strike.
The monster's sharp claws screeched against the barrier, leaving behind several gouges in the ice.
If those claws had struck a human body, they'd have easily ripped a person wide open.
Following her guts, Meteria willed the ice wall to shatter.
The barrier exploded outward, releasing a blast of freezing air that completely encased the war shadow.
At the same time, seven more war shadows dropped from the ceiling to surround them.
Since Sion and Alfia were both using spells to lower their presence, the monsters only had eyes for Meteria.
Through her own senses, Meteria could feel that the two of them were keeping a close watch over her.
That realization brought her a deep sense of comfort. She steadied her nerves and took a long breath.
"First dance, tsukishiro."
She gracefully swung her sword, aiming the tip directly at the floor.
The ribbon trailed behind the motion, carving out a perfect semicircle through the air.
Glittering crystals drifted through the corridor.
The display was breathtakingly beautiful.
Meteria took a step forward and swung her sword directly at the remaining monsters.
While the skills she had rehearsed over the past few days were a bit unpolished, they were undeniably lethal.
It didn't take long for her to clear the monsters from the surrounding area.
Only after confirming that there were no more monsters nearby did Meteria return to Sion and Alfia.
"Your movements were beautiful but they're still a bit unpolished. I'll leave the corrections to Alfia," Sion gently pointed out her flaws.
"As for your combat awareness, you can't always freeze an enemy. You need to learn how to stay calm, analyze the situation and counterattack."
"That's a habit you'll need to build over time."
"I know."
Meteria then looked over at her twin with eager anticipation.
"You're putting too much force into your swings. You need to relax your wrists and arms slightly and always keep a fraction of your strength in reserve."
"And during the third strike, you should use less force."
When it came to close quarters combat and movements, Alfia's expertise far exceeded Sion's.
It was her overwhelming experience as an adventurer.
She carefully adjusted the footwork and posturing of the swordstyle.
While it looked beautiful, it was complete garbage for actual combat.
