Chapter 90: Step 90 to Greatness: Gotta Smack ’em All
Adrian glanced around the room, noticing how the other students studiously avoided making eye contact, pretending not to see the bullying unfolding before them. It was a familiar scene, which he had witnessed countless times in his previous life.
He couldn’t blame them, though. Because he also knew the consequences of standing up to them firsthand. After all, that’s what he had done before.
Adrian’s mind flashed back to that fateful day in the school infirmary, where he had found himself nursing a bruised ego and a throbbing headache.
The bully had targeted him for daring to speak out against his group of lackeys for extortion, and the repercussions had been swift and brutal.
However, things were different now. Adrian got up, but then Michael grabbed his wrist.
"Oi, what are you doing?" he hissed. "I’m sure you’re itching to kick his ass with those muscles, but aren’t you forgetting something?"
"What?" Adrian frowned.
"About his parents, you dumb fuck!"
"...right."
His memory was still a bit hazy, but when Michael pointed it out, he remembered something else.
The bullying he got from Chad and his lackeys wasn’t half as bad as what his parents did to Adrian’s. He remembered witnessing his mother being yelled at by the teachers, even though he was the victim.
Chad’s parents were connected with the teachers, so Adrian and his mother were the ones who got yelled at and punished by the teachers for reporting a crime.
His mother even had to beg Chad’s mother not to press ’charges’ on Adrian, even though he was the one who got beaten up.
That was the day Adrian learned about the reality of the world. As long as one had money, whatever one said was the truth, even if it was a blatant lie. Everyone would either believe them or look the other way.
Sure, there were surveillance cameras. The school had plenty of them, but strangely, it would always malfunction whenever there was an incident involving such ’influential’ figures.
How could a normal person fight against corruption of such scale?
That’s why Adrian decided not to intervene in the matter... for now. Causing a scene in front of so many people would only bring more trouble than it was worth.
But fate had other plans.
As he turned his eyes away from the confrontation, someone whacked him on the head. Turning slowly, Adrian’s gaze saw Chad smirking, his hand still raised from the strike, but not towards him.
"Oi, Skinny," Chad taunted Michael. "Hand over the lunch money. I don’t have the entire day to wait for you."
"...I don’t have any—"
Smack!
"I asked for money, not excuses! And you," Chad said, pointing at Adrian. "Does the president require a separate invitation?"
With that, he was about to hit Adrian too, but Adrian grabbed Chad’s wrist with lightning speed. Chad tried to pull away, but Adrian’s fingers had wrapped around his wrist like they were made of superglue.
"You—"
Before Chad could finish the words, Adrian yanked him down to his level before his other hand whacked Chad in the back of the head.
Chad’s head shot towards the table and bounced off of it with a loud thud before he fell to the ground, screaming in pain.
"Argh! What the fuck?!" Chad yelled, holding his head. "You bastard!"
The classroom fell into stunned silence. No one had ever seen Chad get hit like that before. Heck, it was the first time he had gotten hit by someone.
"You... you bastard!" Chad spat, still on the ground. "My parents will hear about this! You’re finished!"
While he was down, clutching his head, Adrian smirked, playfully kicking him, before squatting to his level.
"Touch me again, and I’ll make sure you regret it. Even your fucking parents wouldn’t be able to bring you back from the dead, now, could they?"
Chad’s bravado faltered for a moment. His usual cocky smirk disappeared as he looked up at Adrian from the floor.
He had heard many people barking such things. He had been one of them, but for some reason Chad felt like Adrian wasn’t talking crap and meant every word of it.
It wasn’t until then that he realized that Adrian wasn’t the weak guy he used to bully every day and had grown both mentally and physically.
It was the same for the rest of the class. Being in Adrian’s presence felt like they were in the presence of a predator. Well, they weren’t off the mark as they were feeling the passive effect of [Apex Predator].
Before either one could react or act further, the classroom door opened, and a teacher walked in. Mr. Thompson, the history teacher, looked around with a frown.
"What is going on here?" he demanded, his eyes landing on Chad on the floor and Adrian standing over him.
"Nothing, sir," Adrian smiled, lifting Chad to his feet like he was made of cotton. "Chad just tripped and hit his head somewhere. I was about to help him up."
It wasn’t so easy to fool a teacher, but seeing as Chad didn’t say anything to refute Adrian, he sighed and waved them off.
"Go get yourself checked in the infirmary," he told Chad before turning to Adrian. "And you, sit down."
"I’ll see you at lunch..." Chad snarled before walking away. "And when I do, you’ll pay for this, understand that!"
Sheesh, which part of dying you didn’t understand, fool?
"Adrian, will you sit or should I make you stand outside?"
"Oh, my apologies, sir." Adrian nodded and sat back down, acting all nonchalant as if nothing had happened.
However, that wasn’t the case.
As he leaned back in his chair, staring at the ceiling, he cursed his hasty actions.
I fucked up... I should have kept my cool. Now I have to deal with his parents again.
"You really did it this time," Michael whispered. "I should feel bad for what’s about to happen to you, but damn, that was satisfying to watch."
"Yeah, you’ll probably get another show soon," Adrian shook his head. "Now that I have started this mess, I can’t stop in the middle."
