Chapter 72: Step 72 to Greatness: A Tribe Is Strong As Long As Their Stomachs Are Full
By the time the women returned, Adrian and Tsukika were already dumping the little crabs in the pond. Nysa seemed fond of them as well and promised to look after them like her own children.
"Don’t get too attached to them," Adrian reminded her. "After all, they are meant to be eaten once they grow up."
Nysa looked at him and rolled her decorative eyes.
"I know what they are for, Adrian," she said, gently playing with two crabs. "I care about nature, but that does not mean I don’t consume it. Even nature gives everyone the right to live, but only the strong live long."
"As long as you know it," Adrian shrugged, returning to the fire pit where Tsukika was eyeing the structure suspiciously. "Why are you looking at it like that? Is something wrong?"
"There is no wood in it," Tsukika pointed out. "Yet it keeps burning fervently. Tell me, Majutsushi, is it another demonic art of yours?"
"You could say that," Adrian nodded, taking the bundle of her sash away from her. "As long as it keeps burning, there is no need to add firewood to it or start the fire from scratch."
Tsukika looked at him like she couldn’t decide what was weirder, the world or the one who brought her there.
She should have missed the thrill of her past, but even though it had only been a couple of hours since she got there, Tsukika was enjoying the simplicity of life there.
As a person who had only known violence her whole life, the sudden change of pace was... welcomed. Then there was the man who made it all possible for her. She had indeed tried to seduce him by the stream, yet he held firmly to his belief.
It was a test in which Majutsushi excelled. Had he fallen for her deceptive charms, despite only knowing her for a few hours, she would have abandoned him.
After all, for some reason, she couldn’t kill him, but she could move freely. Hence, abandoning was the only choice she had. However, it did not come to that.
"Male... what are those?"
A feminine voice snapped Tsukika out of her reverie. She saw that Adrian was holding two crabs upside down by grabbing their side legs together.
It was the correct technique of holding live crabs, and Tsukika was impressed that the Majutsushi was even aware of such details. Little did she know that her beloved Majutsushi was the son of an avid fisher. Adrian’s father had taught him a lot about fish and crabs.
Although Adrian might not like his father now, at one point in his life, he did everything he could to make his father proud. Including learning about his hobbies.
Who would have thought I would need those skills in this way?
Adrian shook his head, not wanting to remember those times. He put on a smile and turned to the girls.
"These are called crabs," he told them, dangling the crabs.
"Crabs? But you can’t eat them," Nixa pointed out. "The hurt us too!"
Adrian looked confused for a moment before realizing why Nixa acted like it. It was similar to when Mika saw slimes and clutched her skirt.
They had a bad encounter with certain creatures and immediately chalked them off as dangerous or unnecessary.
In Nixa’s case, she had once been part of a hunting team in her previous tribe. They used to catch fish in shallow waters using a spear. Once, one of them accidentally stepped on a large crab and lost a finger on their foot.
Nixa remembered that moment and immediately warned Adrian, as she didn’t want him to suffer either.
"These things can’t be eaten? Why don’t you tell it to those two?" Adrian chuckled, nodding towards Sera and Hannah.
The women turned towards them, only to see them drooling as their eyes remained fixed on the crabs.
Adrian could understand their reaction. On Earth, crabs this big would have cost a lot, yet on Savage Earth, they were in abundance. You just had to work for it a bit. Thanks to Tsukika, Adrian didn’t even have to do that.
As for the tribes women, all they saw was Adrian holding dangerous prey, like a crab, so fearlessly, and they were filled with admiration.
[Tribe’s favorability towards you has increased.]
[Current favorability: 140/150 points]
[Current Standing: Honored Member]
"Male, can I try holding them?" Mika asked, her hand already extended towards Adrian.
"Of course. Just hold them like I was and keep them upside down. Yes, that’s the way."
One after another, everyone wanted to hold the crabs. As for why he had the big crabs with him there... to eat them, of course.
He had given the small ones to Nysa to raise, then brought some big, live ones because using salvage on the crabs ruined all the fun of eating them.
Besides, he wanted everyone to experience the luxury of eating such crabs. As for the crab meat he had in his inventory, they could always eat it later.
"Since we have to repair the buildings, eating these crabs would give us a lot of energy."
"But male, how do you eat them?" Amiya asked, poking a crab with a stick. "These are not soft like the flesh of other beasts."
"I’ll show you," he replied. "Everyone, get some sticks and sit around."
While the girls did that, Adrian cleared a small space in the middle of the fire pit and tossed the crabs into it to roast. As for the sticks, it was for everyone to ensure the crabs did not escape.
He would have preferred boiling them, but they did not have any utensils, as the pots Sera had left to air dry were destroyed by the birds before they even got a chance to use them.
When I return, I should get my hands on some pottery books to understand how to make them quickly.
Besides, it wasn’t like crabs won’t taste good by just simple roasting.
While the girls were doing that, he went into the smokehouse to get some smoked meat for everyone. They needed something to fill their stomachs after the fight with the birds, and the crabs would also take some time to get ready.
"Look, male! They are changing colors!" Amika pointed out after fifteen minutes or so.
The next second, everyone leaned in to see them. Other than Adrian, because there was no space left to see the crabs.
Unable to hold back, he whacked both Sera and Hannah. He could understand the tribeswomen wanting to see it as it was their first time, but why were the two fools doing the same?
"Alright, a few more minutes and we can take them out now," Adrian said, noticing the bright red shells. "Here, let’s cover them up with ash and charcoal... oh, fuck."
The charcoal reminded him of something.
He had charcoal pit cards that needed to be combined and built, and he still hadn’t opened the chest yet!
He looked at the work that needed to be done and the appetizing crabs in front. Needless to say, the crabs won.
Opening the chest would only give me more work to do. Yeah... I’ll do it later.
