Chapter 71: Step 71 to Greatness: A Sword Saint’s Way Of Catching Crabs
After the fight, since Root had drained most of the pond, it was decided that everyone would clean up at the stream. They will continue to do so until Nysa restores the pond’s water level.
It was a bit inconvenient since the monsters could now attack them freely. But Adrian didn’t mind it. After all, he had something to do near the stream.
"It was nice of the guardian to give us these little balls," Nixa commented, watching the slimes clear a path for them.
Since a lot of creatures like snakes, etc, could be hiding under the tall grass, Nysa had sent some slimes with them to scout the area. While they were at it, they would also look for the toilet paper plant and eat the grass to make the path safer for them.
While the women went to bathe, Adrian once again slipped away. Part of the reason was to help Hannah get comfortable, and with Adrian there, she wouldn’t feel that.
However, the larger part of the reason was the cages he had. Since he had to clear his storage, he decided to use all the wooden fish cages in the stream.
"They are smaller than I expected," Adrian mumbled, looking at the cages.
Each cage was half a meter long, and that too was divided into two sections. One section had a wider entrance, but a short area, and the other had no ’gaps’, but took up most of the area.
The sections were connected by a small, slanted tunnel. Adrian tried putting his hand into it, but then changed his mind and used a stick instead.
He inserted it through the gap, but when he tried to pull it out, he noticed something he hadn’t before. The tunnel’s walls were lined up with tiny thorns that lined up along with the mouth of the tunnel.
Anyone entering the tunnel wouldn’t notice it. However, the moment they tried to move out the same way, they would suffer a fate worse than death.
The same happened with the stick. The jagged teeth dug into the stick, tearing much of its bark away before Adrian finally pulled it out.
"...good thing I didn’t put my hand in it."
Adrian walked around the stream collecting heavy stones. He then dropped the stones inside the cage to ensure the stream wouldn’t carry the cages away overnight.
Then he put some of the bird remains he took after the attack and placed them inside the larger section of the cage. That way, the fish would swim into that section for food and get trapped.
Once all the cages were prepared, he dragged them into the stream. After the cages settled deep into the stream, he got out and marked all eleven locations where the cages were.
"Alright... that’s one thing taken care of," Adrian mumbled, wiping the sweat off his forehead. "Now, for the next thing: finding crabs."
Since most organisms on Savage Earth were bigger than expected, Adrian believed it would be the same for the crabs.
As good as hunting large crabs sounded, he was worried about their claws. One mistake and he could lose his fingers, if not the entire arm.
With that thought, instead of overturning the big rocks where the crabs would usually hide by hand, Adrian brought out the remaining fire-hardened spear.
"Instead of overturning these heavy rocks, it would be easier to just poke these crabs out with the spear."
With the spear in hand, he began looking for crabs among the scattered rocks by the stream. He didn’t even notice that someone was standing right behind him.
"Majutsushi, why are you poking holes in the ground?" Tsukika asked.
Adrian jumped up in surprise after hearing a voice out of nowhere and nearly dropped the spear.
"Tsukika!" he scolded, trying to catch his breath. "Don’t sneak up on me like that! Why are you here...?"
Adrian’s voice drifted away when he noticed the woman’s attire. She had adjusted her kimono in a way that left the front partially open, revealing a generous view of her tanned skin and the curve of her chest.
She did it to ensure her body would dry off naturally without getting the clothes too wet. However, she didn’t seem to realize how seductive the look was, or perhaps she simply didn’t care about it.
Adrian was gawking at her so openly that he didn’t even hear her chuckle or that she stepped closer to him. It wasn’t until her finger lifted Adrian’s chin to meet her gaze that he snapped out of the trance.
"I finished bathing early. I thought I would look for you and help wash your back, Majutsushi," she said, radiating innocence like she wasn’t deliberately seducing him.
Now that he was looking at her eyes, Adrian felt his face heat up, and he stepped back.
"A-As you can see, I’m not bathing right now," he said, turning his attention back to the rocks. "Besides, can you tone down your charm a bit? I’m trying to work here and you... can be a bit distracting."
Tsukika smiled, looking at the finger she had touched him with before licking it. However, on Adrian’s request, she didn’t say anything more, but she didn’t leave either.
Adrian could only ignore her and keep poking rocks. Just then, he felt like he had hit something other than rocks. A large crab, roughly thrice the size of a normal stream crab, scurried out from under the rock, wanting to escape into the stream.
"You’re not getting away!" Adrian exclaimed, turned the spear around, and pressed the crab to its place.
Then the dilemma hit him. Should he kill the thing and salvage it, or should he keep it alive for the pond?
In the end, he decided on the former. He had already placed eleven cages in the stream. One of them is bound to catch a few crabs, right?
With that thought, he stepped on the crab’s back before prying its head off with the tip of the spear.
"Salvage!"

Adrian had seen gargantuan returns from salvage skill before, still he couldn’t help but get surprised by the returns every damn time!
I wonder how big they would get in the nutrient-rich pond...
If the crabs could get that big with just a normal stream, he couldn’t even imagine how big they would get if raised in the pond. Just like that, his mind did a 180, and he decided to also catch a few of them.
But to catch them, he would need help. Thankfully, Tsukika was right there.
"Tsuki—"
He turned around to ask for her help, only to see her tying a bunch of smaller grabs with her sash.
"Is it up to your liking, Majutsushi?" she asked, blinking innocently.
