Chapter 70: [Weekly Bonus - 6/6] Step 70 to Greatness: Do Not Mess With A Farmer’s Field
A few moments ago...
In contrast to the panic in the settlement, Tsukika just stood there, awaiting orders to engage the birds. Root was the same, well, he was busy with the farm and didn’t even notice the birds.
Unfortunately, the birds noticed the farmland.
A large group of them broke off from the main flock and swooped down toward the freshly tilled soil. Before Root even had the time to appreciate his work, the birds landed on the farmland and began pecking at the ground.
Within seconds, the planted potato plants were ripped away along with the seeds that Root had just sown into the ground.
"You mannerless, feathered bastards! Get away from my land!" Root yelled in his squeaky voice, but the birds did not give a damn.
He didn’t even let his summoner disrespect him that way, and these damned birds dared to ignore him? He couldn’t tolerate it and grabbed his tiny pitchfork and rushed toward the nearest group of birds.
A large crow noticed the tiny slime charging at it. The bird tilted its head, almost amused, then casually smacked Root away with its wings.
The ancient slime flew several feet through the air and landed face first into the ruined farmland. The crow looked at him and cawed twice as if laughing at him before ripping away a potato plant right in front of his eyes.
"You... you dare!" he squealed, throwing away his pitchfork. "I’ve lived for centuries! I’ve seen empires rise and fall! And you think you can just eat my potatoes!?"
Disrespecting him was one thing, but ruining his hard work was where these birds crossed the line. Root’s small body began to tremble with fury as he turned and rushed toward the pond.
"I’ll show you what happens when you enrage a retired guardian!" he yelled, furiously lifting his hand over his head. "Out of the way, young one!"
Before Adrian or the slime knew it, the ancient slime took off his clothes and disappeared into the pond.
Adrian looked at the spot where Root had disappeared in confusion.
"Just what could have gotten him so angry?" he shrugged and kept throwing red slimes at the birds.
Adrian was about to throw another slime when the ground rumbled, and the entire pond began to churn. Just as he turned to check the pond, Root’s massive figure burst out of the pond.
The ancient slime had absorbed half of the water in the pond to grow to nearly two-thirds of the sentinel tower’s length.
"Try smacking me now, you worthless sky rats!" Root yelled, showing off his muscular body.
"He looks intimidating... until he speaks, that is," Adrian mumbled, hearing Root’s squeaky voice.
As for his open challenge, it seemed quite a few birds had accepted it and dove right at him to attack. However, as soon as they got in range, Root simply swatted them away.
The birds exploded into wet splatters as soon as they came in contact with his palm, and their bodies were absorbed into his body for nutrition.
He laughed again, louder this time, as more birds tried to attack him, only to meet the same fate.
"More! Attack me more!" He laughed. "I will use your nutrients to make my plants grow stronger!"
Root swung his arms wildly, crushing dozens of birds with each swipe. The remaining flock started to scatter in panic, but Root wasn’t done.
"Come on! Is that all you’ve got?!" he roared, stepping out of the pond to chase after the birds that had attacked the farmland.
"Well... that’s one way to handle them," Adrian mumbled, putting the red slime down. "Now I know why they called you a guardian."
With Root joining the fight, things were looking to move towards a swift resolution. The birds were being chased away, and the few that dared to stay back quickly fell prey to the arrow tower.
The birds might have gone, but their remains were scattered all over the settlement. Broken feathers, torn wings, and small carcasses lay everywhere.
Cleaning it all themselves would’ve been nothing short of a nightmare. Not to mention, if they weren’t disposed of properly, they could cause diseases there and on Savage Earth, even a common cold could do a number on them.
I should bring some medicines back in secret, just in case.
Thankfully, they did not have to worry about the cleanup, as they had a cleanup crew on duty.
The blue slimes were working overtime to clean the place up. They crawled across the ground, swallowing the dead birds whole and leaving behind only a few wet patches.
The settlement slowly started to look clean again as the slimes ate everything in their path. As for Root, he was back to his original size, and even the water he used was returned to the pond.
Well, it would have been returned if Nysa hadn’t objected to it. After all, the water Root carried now had nutrients from the birds and could pollute the pond.
While it won’t have an effect on her and the slimes, such water could cause illness to humans. In the end, all that water went to waste, and even Root looked apologetic about it.
However, Adrian didn’t mind it at all. After all, the water they were now consuming came from the marketplace. But given the monster attacks, their prices would soar if someone was even willing to sell water anymore.
"Water has become a problem again..." Adrian mumbled, then remembered something and sent Hannah a text. "As long as she grabs some remains, she could use them in the wishing well. With her luck, getting water from it should be easy, right?"
Then came Sera’s turn. He told her to buy as much water as she could, just in case Hannah didn’t couldn’t get any from the wishing well.
After assigning the tasks, he went around the settlement to assess the damage the birds had done. And honestly, they had done quite a bit of damage.
The longhouse had a few holes in the roof where birds had tried to break in. The smokehouse door was slightly damaged, but the structure itself was still standing strong. It was all thanks to the accumulated smoke inside. It must have startled the birds into leaving it alone.
Unlike the mentioned buildings, the farmland had taken the worst hit. Many of the young potato plants were ripped out or trampled, and several seeds were gone. The soil would most likely have to be tilled again, and the remaining potato plants replanted.
Thankfully, the fence and the sentinel tower were intact with little to no damage.
"Well, it could have been worse," Adrian said, looking at the smokehouse’s crooked door. "Building can be repaired, but the fact that no one suffered lasting wounds matters more."
Adrian nodded before sending the ladies to collect the resources required for repairs. And that’s when his eyes fell on Tsukika.
"Looks like you’re fine, that’s good," Adrian smiled. "So, what do you think about this place? I mean, you won’t get bored here."
Tsukika shrugged, trying to act nonchalant, but the slight curve of her lips betrayed her. It would be a lie to say she wasn’t intrigued by the strange world around her.
"Next time, find me a stronger opponent," she smirked. "These birds weren’t enough to make me draw my blade."
Adrian just shook his head in disbelief at her words. Things had gotten so chaotic, and yet it wasn’t enough for her to draw her swords?
What a goddamn crazy woman is she!?
