Chapter 69: Step 69 to Greatness: One Must Follow The Rule And Say: Nice
"Caw..."
Seeing his prized pet in such a state made Adrian feel anger like he hadn’t in a long time.
He scooped her up in his arms, only to see that several of her glossy black feathers were missing or bent at odd angles. There were visible cuts and scratches on her wings and body, and one of her talons was bleeding slightly.
"Who did this to you!?"
Huginn weakly looked above. As she did, the sky suddenly darkened, and a massive shadow fell over them. Adrian looked up, expecting to see a cloud, but it wasn’t a cloud that was blocking the sun.
At that moment, the sentinel tower went berserk, ringing continuously. It didn’t get triggered before since the birds were flying much higher than its range. Only when they dove to attack did the tower alert Adrian.
"Son of a—Everyone! Get inside!" he yelled, seeing the massive flock of birds.
The sky was filled with hundreds, if not thousands, of birds. It wasn’t just one type of bird either. At a glance, one could see eagles, ravens, crows, and hell, even ducks.
Unlike what Adrian thought, his settlement wasn’t out of danger. It was just that the other settlements were attacked first because they didn’t require ’special’ attention.
Instead of sending regular beasts, they sent the one kind of beast that no settlement could defeat without suffering heavy casualties.
The massive flock dove right towards the settlement in waves. The first few birds broke off and swooped down, aiming for the longhouse’s roof.
Another wave entered the salt quarry to look for survivors. They were attacking any structure that could protect the humans from their wrath.
Mika grabbed her pike and began stabbing blindly at the birds. The tribeswomen did the same. However, unlike fighting with ground creatures, these avian bastards were way too many for the stabs to have much effect on them.
"Amika, you go inside first," Adrian urged, handing Huginn over to her.
She nodded and rushed inside. Protecting the seed in her took precedence, so she didn’t dare to step out. He then threw all his arrow bundle cards on the ground and used them before grabbing Sera and Hannah.
Since there was no time to text them, he just pointed at the arrows and then at the arrow tower. The tower couldn’t possibly deal with all the birds, but it was better than nothing.
The girls understood and rushed to the tower even as the birds scratched them. Meanwhile, Freki kept jumping off the longhouse’s walls, trying to keep the birds off the roof.
The birds noticed it and changed their target to the wolf. At first, their talons didn’t do much damage to the wolf, if any. However, over time, their damage added up, and within minutes, Freki’s white fur began turning reddish in some places.
"Rixxa! Amiya! Come with me!" Adrian yelled over the chaos, dragging the two towards the pond.
There, Nysa was fighting off the birds herself. She was half-submerged in the middle of the pond, with her hands above her head, along with the tentacles that made up her hair, her fingers and tentacles kept shooting jets of slime at the diving birds.
Adrian saw her and didn’t know what impressed him more. The seed at which she shot the birds, or that she wasn’t missing a single shot.
The birds that got struck let out sharp cries before falling from the sky like hail. With their wings stuck to their side, they fell to the ground, and some fell into the pond.
"Shit! We have to fish those birds out of the water before they—"
Adrian was worried the birds would ruin the purity of the water. However, when the first bird touched the water, he realized the entire surface of the water was already covered with blue slimes.
The slimes in the pond did not waste any time. As soon as a bird landed, they swarmed over it. But even killing them was a process of sorts.
First, the blue slimes dissolved the feathers and skin of the birds. Then the red slimes burned through the meat with their acid and fed on the sludge. At last, the green slimes swallowed the injured parts of the birds and grew larger with each meal.
This way, the birds did not even have time to struggle, even if they fell on the ground. As effective as the process was, it only protected the pond, not the entire settlement.
"Nysa, I’m borrowing some of your children!" Adrian yelled before handing a bunch of green slimes to Rixxa and Amiya.
"They are yours to take," Nysa replied, without even sparing him a glance.
"Take two of these to Amika and have them sit on Huginn and Freki. Amiya, you put these on everyone’s heads. Put on you on top of yours too, both of you."
The girls did not ask why he wanted them to carry those slimes, but they trusted him enough not to ask questions and rushed to get things done.
Adrian also grabbed slimes, but he grabbed the red ones.
"Don’t you fuckers dare die," he whispered before throwing them at the birds.
The birds, still diving in large numbers, crashed straight into them. For a brief moment, nothing happened. Then the red slimes exploded and doused the birds in acid.
The acid burned through feathers, skin, and muscle instantly. Dozens of birds screamed as they plummeted from the sky, their bodies melting mid-fall until only bones remained.
Remained of the red slimes, attached themselves to the bones to get back to ground safely and crawled to the pond to heal.
However, it wasn’t just the birds that were hit by the acid. After all, there was no way to predict where the acid would go after the explosion.
The acid rain fell on the tribe members below as well. Drops landed on their arms, shoulders, and any exposed part. Fortunately, the green slimes on top of their heads reacted instantly.
They stretched over the injuries and absorbed the acid, healing the wounds in seconds. The green slimes grew slightly larger with each healing and covered more of their bodies, and began preventing injuries altogether.
It was a risky move, but that’s why he had sent Amika inside. He wanted to send everyone inside as well, but they wouldn’t have accepted that. So, lessening their pain was the most he could do for them.
Besides, he was hurting the most. After all, to throw the slimes, he had to dig his fingers into their bodies, which were filled with acid.
Although the green slimes around him healed the fingers between throws, suffering the pain repeatedly made his hands go numb. Still, he kept at it.
It was then that he noticed something weird. The birds started to panic and scatter, but they didn’t stay far before rejoining the flock and attacking the settlement again.
They seemed to be possessed with destroying the settlement more than attacking the residents.
No, it’s more like someone is controlling them and forcing them to do this.
Before he could dwell on it more, he heard a familiar voice as someone came rushing towards him.
"Out of the way, young one!" Root yelled, barrelling towards the pond, and jumped into it.
"...what was that about?"
