Chapter 289: What A Pity
At Xue Ruhong’s question, Bai Hanyun scratched her cheek and shyly replied, "Erm... Actually, my coming here was an accident."
"An accident?" Feng Xiyan was shocked and hurriedly checked on her, asking worriedly, "Are you alright? Are you injured?"
Patting his arm gently, Bai Hanyun shook her head and replied, "I’m fine. My friend protected me well."
Hearing this, Feng Xiyan and the generals let out a sigh of relief.
Lowering his eyes, Feng Xiyan’s expression turned gloomy as he whispered, "How I wish I had been there when you needed protection."
Overhearing his words, Bai Hanyun smiled and said, "You can protect me while I’m here."
While the two of them were talking, Zhan Qi moved closer to Xue Ruhong. Nudging Xue Ruhong with his elbow, Zhan Qi whispered in a low voice, "Hey, why do I feel like the two of them suit each other very well?"
When Xue Ruhong heard this, he glanced at Feng Xiyan and Bai Hanyun for a moment, then sighed and said, "The Great General and Fairy Bai are indeed a match made in Heaven. Unfortunately, humans and fairies cannot be together. It goes against the will of Heaven."
Listening to his words, Zhan Qi muttered with a hint of regret in his voice, "What a pity."
Just as the other generals were about to join their secret discussion, a soldier came in and reported, "Great General, the kitchen staff has arrived to deliver your meal."
Feng Xiyan nodded at the soldier and ordered, "Let them bring the food in."
"Yes, Great General."
Soon, a few kitchen staff entered, carrying trays of food. As they placed the dishes on the long table, they secretly stole glances at Bai Hanyun.
The Feng Army’s military barracks had an iron rule: no woman was allowed to enter. Anyone who broke this rule would be subject to punishment under military law.
After serving in the Feng Army for years, this was the first time the kitchen staff had ever seen a woman inside their barracks. And not only was she there, but she was with all of their generals—and even their Great General.
Noticing their glances, Bai Hanyun smiled at them.
Startled, the kitchen staff quickly lowered their eyes. As soon as they finished their task, they bowed to Feng Xiyan and the generals, then hurried out of the tent.
Tilting her head slightly, Bai Hanyun touched her face and wondered, ’Am I really that scary?’
Unable to understand why the kitchen staff had run away the moment she looked at them, Bai Hanyun shrugged and turned her attention to the food on the table.
After experiencing a near-death situation and smelling the fragrance of the dishes before her, her stomach growled in protest.
Guu~ Guu~
Rubbing her flat stomach, she laughed in embarrassment. "Ha ha ha..."
’So cute...’ Feng Xiyan thought as he set down a bowl of steamed rice and handed her a pair of chopsticks. He smiled and said, "Fairy Bai, you must be hungry. Hurry and taste the food. I hope you like it."
Bai Hanyun took the chopsticks and picked up a piece of grilled sausage. After swallowing it, she nodded in approval. "This is so delicious. I never knew a simple grilled sausage could taste like this."
After tasting the dishes, she remembered the generals were still there. Looking at them, Bai Hanyun asked, "Why don’t we eat together?"
The generals shook their heads in unison and replied, "This subordinate has already eaten."
Seeing how serious they were, Bai Hanyun nodded and continued eating with delight.
Watching her eat, Zhan Qi quietly asked the other generals, "Do fairies need to eat?"
At his question, Xue Ruhong rolled his eyes and replied, "General Zhan, you should stop reading those fantasy stories. If Fairy Bai didn’t need to eat, where do you think the food she gave us came from?"
Listening to Xue Ruhong’s words, Zhan Qi scratched his head in doubt and thought, ’But since she needs to eat, doesn’t that mean Fairy Bai is also human?’
Although Zhan Qi had this thought in his mind, he didn’t dare to say it out loud.
When Bai Hanyun finished her bowl of rice and half of the side dishes, she drank a cup of tea and wiped her lips. Letting out a sigh of satisfaction, she smiled and said, "I’m full."
Looking at the remaining side dishes, she raised her eyes to Feng Xiyan and asked, "Can these dishes be kept until tomorrow morning?"
Feng Xiyan shook his head and replied, "Although the temperature has gone down thanks to the rain, the food can’t be kept for long in this humid weather. It will spoil by tomorrow morning."
Hearing this, Bai Hanyun glanced at the food and rubbed her full stomach.
Noticing her gaze, Feng Xiyan smiled, then picked up her chopsticks and empty bowl. "Don’t worry, Fairy Bai. Xiyan will finish them."
Without waiting for her response, Feng Xiyan began eating.
Seeing this, Bai Hanyun’s eyes widened in surprise. Reaching out to stop him, she quickly said, "Feng Xiyan, those are my chopsticks and bowl."
"Xiyan knows," Feng Xiyan said, then continued eating, leaving Bai Hanyun stunned.
By the time she came back to her senses, Feng Xiyan had already finished the remaining food, leaving not a single grain behind.
Seeing this, Zhan Qi turned to the entrance and ordered, "Someone, come."
Soon, a soldier came in and clasped his fists. "General Zhan, what is your instruction?"
"Help us clean the dirty dishes."
"Yes, General Zhan."
When the soldier raised his eyes, he was startled to see Bai Hanyun there.
Frowning slightly, he walked up to the low table to clean the dishes while thinking, ’I didn’t see any woman enter the tent tonight. Where did this young lady come from? Is she the Great General’s Madam?’
While he was speculating, the soldier quickly cleaned the dishes and left to share this great news with his comrades.
After the soldier left, Feng Xiyan looked at the generals and said, "Generals, please have a seat."
The generals nodded and sat in the empty seats around the long table.
Once everyone was seated, Feng Xiyan turned to Bai Hanyun and asked, "Fairy Bai, you said you came here by accident. Can you tell us what happened before you arrived?"
