[Corruption has started to show its interest and will try to influence your companions. Please complete your tasks and make their affection reach its maximum.]
The world magic distracted Kael with its notifications. But as much as he wanted to ignore them, he knew he could not.
He could not bring up these messages again in the future, so he needed to absorb as much of this information as he could beforehand.
Finally, the world magic stopped saying anything, and Kael was able to concentrate on the matter at hand. And that was taking care of the dragon empress...or the creature that was supposed to become the dragon empress. But she was currently just a useless lump of flesh.
"Hey, you are the empress now. Command your brother to stand down."
Kael told the dragon he held in his hands, but the dragon looked too shocked to say anything. The situation was going from bad to worse quickly, which made him sigh.
So he shook the dragon to remind her that she needed to do something.
His actions made the dragon flinch, but she finally spoke up.
"I...I cannot command my brother-"
"At least try. You won’t know what you can do until you actually try it, right?"
Kael asked her, and the dragon empress finally sighed before she opened her mouth to speak.
"B-Brother, you need to stand down. These people are not our enemies! They are here to help us."
The former emperor hesitated at these words, but he slowly froze and came to a halt.
This shocked the dragon empress, and she looked at her brother with a stunned expression.
"I...how did I-"
"Of course he stopped. You are the dragon empress now. You can command much more than simple tasks. But why the hell is this trial not over yet?"
Iris asked in an irritated voice as she walked over to the other two and stretched her back. She looked annoyed, but her mood immediately improved after seeing Kael.
As for her question...Kael had an answer for her. But so did the dragon empress.
"I...my trial is likely not over yet because I have not accepted my fate as the empress. I need to get my head on straight."
The dragon empress knew what she needed to do from here on. As for how she was going to do it? That she had to figure out, and fast.
For now, she took a deep breath and decided to look at her brother with a pained expression.
"My benefactors, would you be so kind as to leave me and my brother alone for now? I promise I will come back once I have finished what I want to say to him. I won’t keep you waiting for long."
"Hey, do you think we can leave you behind-"
Lyra started to speak, only for Kael to stop her by placing a hand in front of her and pulling her back. He could tell that the dragon empress was finally determined to put her past behind her. But to do so, she needed time and space.
"Lyra, let’s head back now. The others are waiting for us. As for you, Miss Dragon Empress, we will be counting on you, so make sure you are not too late. The survival of your race depends on you."
Kael told her, and the dragon empress nodded.
Instead of saying more, he extended his hand toward Lyra, who pouted but decided to place her hand in his and let herself be dragged away.
"Tsk, the only reason I am willing to leave this matter unattended is because you asked me to. But don’t expect me to do this a second time."
She complained, but Kael could tell that she was satisfied as she followed him back.
The path back home felt like a long one, and Kael could feel a foreign power trying to interfere. It was the corruption, and it was trying to break through the protective barrier surrounding the trail.
/Is that your companion? She looks good. Would you mind if I take a bite out of her?/
The voice of the corruption asked as it tried to grab hold of Lyra. But Kael was quick to block its way.
/Awww, you are so protective of her. It makes me even more curious to possess her. Come on! Just let me in a little. I promise I won’t cause any problems./
The corruption was like a sweet temptation without any reward. It could only corrode and corrupt.
Kael could not allow it anywhere near Lyra. Or rather, he refused to allow such a thing.
"Don’t worry so much about me, Kael. I am much stronger than you give me credit for. I am not going to fall for the corruption’s whispers, no matter how much it tries. Just have some faith in me."
Lyra told him as she tightened her grip on Kael’s hand. And he decided to trust her this time.
He knew that Lyra wouldn’t lie to him about this. So, with that thought in his mind, he tightened his grip on her hand and pulled her along. He trusted her, so he decided not to interfere in her affairs.
Soon, both of them opened their eyes and looked around.
Leon and Seraphina looked ready to collapse under the strain of their own abilities while Elena was supporting them alone.
The non-dragon was about to break out of its prison as well, and Kael immediately turned toward it to help Leon out.
But he did not need to do much when a loud roar shook the whole place. It was the roar of an empress, and the dragons who heard it quickly lowered their heads in submission.
The dragon empress walked toward the non-dragon that had taken her form, and the small body began to change into a large dragon.
"You have defiled the dragons’ sanctuary for long enough. Now, it is time for you to rest in peace."
The dragon empress spoke, her voice echoing throughout the cave. And with a single strike of her claw, she separated the head of the non-dragon from its body.
