Chapter 353 180: Hydroxyl Slave Cavalry 2
Just as Zhang Peng said moments ago, who came to help wasn't the crucial part. What was crucial was that help had arrived.
Right as the Hydroxyl Heavy Cavalry charged onto the battlefield, the Ghosts flitting through the sky brought Li Ziyu even better news. In the distance, even more Cavalry were surging forward like a torrent, numbering in the tens of thousands.
The thunder of a thousand hooves made the hearts of the Alliance Soldiers turn cold. At the same time, everyone on the battlefield heard shrill, high-pitched cries that sounded as if they were being forced from constricted throats.
Palamede had barely had time to process the Heavy Cavalry charging into the fray when a shrill cry suddenly pierced the air. He instantly frowned. 'That sound seems familiar... I feel like I've heard it somewhere before.'
Felling the Skeleton Undead before him with a single swing of his axe, Palamede frantically wracked his brain, trying to recall where he had heard such a sound.
Suddenly, his expression turned ghastly.
Hydroxyl Slaves!
Damn it, it's the Hydrogen People!
'What are the Hydrogen People doing in a remote Wasteland like this?!'
He now remembered where he'd heard that cry. It was from his time traveling through the Central Zone. He had encountered the Hydrogen People back then, and had nearly died at their hands.
The Central Zone was incredibly prosperous and home to many Strong Races, but even so, it wasn't entirely safe. Horse Bandits and robbers were still rampant.
Palamede had been very young back then. With his level of combat prowess at the time, he was considered nothing special in the Central Zone. He didn't dare travel alone and had to stick with large, well-guarded merchant caravans for safety.
He remembered setting out with a caravan of over three thousand people, which included more than a thousand fully-armed guards. The caravan had traveled that route many times before, never once encountering a problem.
He didn't know what sort of terrible luck he possessed, but on that particular trip, the route that had always been safe proved otherwise. The caravan of over three thousand was attacked by just a few dozen Hydrogen People.
That's right, just a few dozen of them. Unleashing those same shrill cries, the Hydrogen People tore into the caravan like a gale. Before the guards could even react, their lines had been sliced clean through. After a few such passes, the caravan's ability to resist crumbled.
That incident left a deep, lasting scar on Palamede.
They came and went like shadows, their Speed was extreme, and their Attack Power was immense. Even if you managed to halt their charge and negate their momentum, their prowess in close combat was still formidable. Such was the Sub-human Species known as the Hydrogen People!
After his wounds had healed, he had made a point of purchasing intelligence reports on the Hydrogen People.
They were a nomadic people with no fixed home, who worshipped the eagles in the sky. They had their own culture and were formidable in battle. It was said that ten of them formed a squad, a hundred a company, and a thousand an army. A force of ten thousand of them would even dare to raid a city.
And that was in the Central Zone, where cities were protected by towering walls! Yet, a force of nearly ten thousand Hydrogen People would dare to attack them, often forcing the defenders to hand over money and grain just to make them leave.
The Races of the Central Zone had tried to wipe out the Hydrogen People, but they'd never succeeded. The enemy had no main encampment—wherever they went was their home. Wiping out a few of their smaller bands was not only of little use, but it would also invite vicious retaliation.
In a head-on confrontation, the Strong Races were not particularly worried. With the coordination of their various troop types, dealing with the Hydrogen People wasn't difficult. The crux of the matter was that the Hydrogen People simply wouldn't fight a pitched battle. Instead, they would leverage their mobility to harass their foes, annoying them to no end.
They would lay siege to your city, sabotage your canals, raid your villages, and ambush your supply lines, merchant caravans, and transport convoys. If you dispatched a large army, they would simply scatter, and you wouldn't be able to catch them. The moment your army withdrew, they would circle back and pick up right where they left off.
Several Strong Races fought the Hydrogen People on and off for a hundred years. In the end, the Hydrogen People carried on as they always had, and even began to prosper. In contrast, the Strong Races saw their technological development stagnate, their grain production fall, and their populations suffer significant losses—all for nothing.
After reflecting on this painful experience, they decided to simply leave them alone. 'To hell with it. Let them do whatever they want.'
'We can't handle you, so can't we just stop fighting?!'
And surprisingly, once the other Races backed off, the Hydrogen People stopped fighting as well. They suddenly grew docile, reverting to their old ways. Their actions sent a clear message: as long as you don't harass us, we won't cause widespread trouble for you. We'll herd our flocks, you'll grow your grain. Of course, Plundering was still on the table when the mood struck.
However, the Hydrogen People had their own code when it came to Plundering. If you obediently gave them what they wanted, they wouldn't kill anyone.
And so, the Hydrogen People carved out a place for themselves in the Central Zone, though their reputation was anything but pleasant.
To be able to hold your own in the Central Zone proved one thing—you were incredibly formidable!
Palamede just couldn't wrap his head around it. How had these fierce bandits, the Hydrogen People who roamed the Central Zone, ended up all the way out here?!
While he was still struggling to comprehend the situation, the second wave of the Hydrogen People's Charge arrived. This wave consisted of their Lance Cavalry. Their Armor wasn't particularly heavy, and their Weapon of choice was a four-meter-long Long Spear, as thick as a teacup. The warhorses of the Lance Cavalry were also specially bred; their load-bearing capacity was far inferior to that of the Heavy Cavalry, but when it came to Speed, they left the Heavy Cavalry far behind in the dust.
The Lance Cavalry was the fastest unit among the Hydrogen People Cavalry. After the Heavy Cavalry initiated a Charge, the Lance Cavalry would follow close behind to reap a terrifying harvest from the enemy's ranks.
Their combat style was somewhat similar to that of the ancient Knights of the West. The Long Spear was so long that at the Speed of a Charge, a rider could easily be pulled from their saddle if they failed to withdraw it from a target. Therefore, after impaling an enemy, they would immediately release the Long Spear and switch to a light Curved Saber.
