The reply from the Liminal Observatory arrived through channels that were degrading by the week.
Kairos had sent the encoding data four days ago — a compressed dimensional packet, pushed through the thinning connection between Ascara and the Observatory that sat between dimensions where his staff continued their work. The packet had taken longer to transmit than it should have. The channels that had once carried instantaneous communication now stuttered and lagged, the dimensional substrate’s erosion making even Keeper-level transmissions unreliable.
But the reply came. Fragmented, requiring three separate reception attempts before the data assembled into something coherent. His assistants — the robed figures who recorded observations and monitored Accord compliance with quiet efficiency, who had continued their work in Kairos’s absence without understanding why the Keeper had manifested onto a mortal world and hadn’t returned — had searched the Accord’s archives against the encoding signature Coop had pulled from the ritual floor.
One match. In the entire history of the Accord’s monitoring.

He found Raven in the command center. She saw his face and excused herself from Thorne without explanation. They walked to the Formation Hall. Privacy formations activated.
"My staff at the Observatory found something," he said. "One record. In the full archive of the Accord’s dimensional monitoring — every incident, every classified transmission, every logged anomaly across eons of operations. One match for the encoding."
"Tell me."
"Thousands of years ago. Early Accord — the period after the wars, when the monitoring systems were still being established. A routine station on a transit world detected a transmission moving through the substrate at a depth the instruments weren’t designed to reach. The station logged it because the signal tripped an automated alert — unrecognized frequency, unrecognized encoding, no corresponding sender or receiver in the Accord’s registry."
"The same encoding as the ritual."
"Same structural signature. Compression method, encryption architecture, transmission formatting — all consistent with what Coop recorded. The match is precise."
Raven sat on the workbench. The Formation Hall hummed.
"What did they do with it?"
"What any large institution does with something it can’t explain. Logged it. Attempted to decode the message — failed. Attempted to trace the sender — failed. Attempted to identify the destination — failed. The encoding didn’t match any known entity, any classified threat, any dimensional civilization in the registry. Filed under unresolved anomalies. Never revisited."
"One message. Thousands of years ago. On a transit world that has nothing to do with Ascara."
