Chapter 503: Chapter 502: The Encoding
Location:Seven Peaks — Formation HallDate/Time:TC1856.05.20 (Evening)
Coop landed at dusk. Sixteen hours on a sky-surfing blade, the lattice running continuous analysis the entire flight, the recording data from the sealed chamber organized into a presentation framework that would have made Silas weep with professional envy.
He didn’t go to the command center. He went to the Formation Hall, where Kairos was already waiting — Raven’s formation crystal message had arrived twelve hours ahead of Coop, and the Keeper had spent the intervening time clearing the workspace, cancelling the carrier wave analysis he’d been running for weeks, and preparing the dimensional perception framework that his mortal eyes couldn’t quite manage but his cosmic awareness could still access in limited bursts.
Raven was there. Sitting on a workbench. Tea in hand — the right kind. She’d been there since the crystal message arrived, doing the thing she did when the next piece of the constellation was coming: being still, being present, being ready.
"Show me," Kairos said.
Coop activated the lattice’s display. The Formation Hall filled with light — the carved patterns from the sealed chamber rendered in cognitive frequencies that Kairos’s dimensional perception could read and Raven’s formation-trained eye could interpret.
The three layers spread across the workspace like blueprints unrolling. Containment. Teleport. And beneath them, glowing in frequencies that the human eye shouldn’t have been able to see, the coded burst message that rode the carrier wave like a voice on a wire.
"The outer two layers are straightforward," Coop said. "Containment and spatial displacement. Standard formation work — well-executed, precise, consistent with the devourer formation methods you’ve described. The teleport would have functioned. Whoever built the surface layers knew exactly what they were doing."
"The third layer," Kairos said. He’d moved closer to the display. The ice-blue eyes were doing something Raven had learned to recognize — the dimensional perception activating, the cosmic awareness that his mortal manifestation could still access in short bursts, reading the formation data at frequencies the lattice couldn’t render.
"The encoding," Coop said. "I couldn’t classify it. Nothing in my database matches — no Ascaran tradition, no pre-Diminishing protocol, nothing the Splinter archives contain. The data structure is clear: compressed, encrypted, formatted for transmission to a specific receiver. But the encryption architecture is unknown."
Kairos studied the burst message in silence. His hands at his sides. The sword against the wall. The absolute stillness of a being processing something at a level the room couldn’t perceive.
Minutes passed. Raven drank her tea. Coop’s lattice hummed. The Formation Hall’s amber lights held steady.
"It’s not devourer," Kairos said.
The words landed in the room like the pulse change had landed — small, precise, and devastating in their implications.
"You’re certain?"
"Devourer communication protocols are part of the Accord’s classification system. Every encoding method, every encryption architecture, every transmission format the devourers have used across eons of dimensional conflict — I have them catalogued. Memorized. The Accord requires it." He stepped back from the display. "This encoding doesn’t match any of them. Not a single element. The data structure is sophisticated — more sophisticated than devourer communication, actually — but it uses principles I’ve never encountered."
