Chapter 488: Chapter 487: What She Didn’t Say

The command center emptied. Kairos didn’t leave.

He stood at the back wall where he’d stood through the entire recording, sword against the wall, and when the last person was gone, he walked to her desk and sat across from her without being invited. That was new. The Kairos of a year ago would have waited to be asked.

Raven activated the privacy formations. Triple seal. The room hummed and went quiet.

"So," she said.

"So." He leaned back in the chair. The sword was still against the wall — the first time since he’d arrived that he’d put distance between himself and the blade. As if the conversation ahead required hands free of weapons. "That wasn’t a devourer construct."

"No."

"And we both know it."

"I’ve been turning it over since the central chamber. The playbook — forty-three worlds you’ve tracked, every life I’ve seen them across — it’s always the same. Find a host, whisper, corrupt, destabilize. Burn through the host and move on. Rinse, repeat, world falls."

"Amara was textbook. Right up until she wasn’t."

"Right up until the seed ate her." Raven pulled her feet up onto the chair — the unconscious gesture of someone settling into a conversation that would take a while. The mark on her wrist pulsed between them. "Systems don’t eat their hosts, Kairos. They park the vehicle and find a better one."

"Never. Not once."

"And they don’t change species. A whisper-parasite can’t rebuild a human body into a fifteen-meter arthropod. That’s not corruption — that’s engineering."

"And the child’s soul. The sacrifice." His voice shifted — quieter, the way it always got when the subject touched something personal. "Devourer seeds don’t harvest souls. They don’t even operate at the soul level. When the seed wanted Kael’s child sacrificed after the birth — that was the first signal that something had changed."

"Kael stopped it. Interrupted the ritual, took the boy, ran." Raven paused. "Brought him here."

The weight of that settled between them.

Kairos pressed his thumb against the bridge of his nose — the mortal gesture of a headache he was still learning to have. "The seed wanted to sacrifice that child’s soul. Seeds don’t use souls. That’s another anomaly — and we don’t know what purpose the sacrifice was meant to serve."

"Whatever it was, Kael stopped it. The child is here. Safe. And the creature built the door anyway — without the sacrifice. Which means either the sacrifice wasn’t essential to the door, or she found another way."

"Or the door she built is incomplete. And she doesn’t care."

"Because the door isn’t the only thing she’s building." Raven looked east. "The parasites. The breeding chambers. Sixty to a hundred thousand chimeric organisms with human DNA. That’s not a door component. That’s an army."

"An army she hasn’t deployed."
