Chapter 489: Chapter 488: What the Silence Says
Location:Seven Peaks — Formation Hall, Command CenterDate/Time:TC1856.01.14-16
Kairos spent two days trying to reach anyone.
The first night, he’d sat in the Formation Hall and initiated the standard Accord invocation — the emergency protocol that every Keeper had access to, the signal that traveled across dimensional architecture at speeds that made light seem pedestrian. He sent it with the full evidence package: recording crystal data, dimensional signatures, the creature’s biological analysis, the door’s structural profile. Everything the team had risked their lives to document.
The response should have arrived within minutes. The Accord’s communication architecture was instantaneous across dimensional distances — that was the point of it. A Keeper could reach any node in the framework, any other Keeper, any oversight body, any response authority. In eons of operation, the system had never failed.
The response arrived in three hours. Fragmented. Partial. Like a letter that had been torn in half and reassembled by someone who didn’t know which pieces went where.
He sent again. Different channel. Different protocol. Same result — delayed, degraded, incomplete.
He spent the second day cycling through every channel he had access to. Fourteen different pathways. Emergency frequencies. Backup protocols. Legacy channels that hadn’t been used in millennia. Each one returned the same thing: fragments. Echoes. The shape of a response without the substance.
Raven found him in the Formation Hall on the morning of the third day, sitting on the floor with his back against the workbench, the sword across his knees, and the expression of a being who had just discovered that the framework he’d maintained for eons had a hole in it.
"Nothing," he said.
She sat across from him. The formation lights cast amber warmth across the workshop where he’d spent weeks calibrating detectors. Now the detectors sat untouched. The crystals hummed. Coop’s lattice equipment blinked in the corner.
"Define nothing."
"I initiated the standard Accord invocation at twenty-three hundred on the thirteenth. Full protocol — emergency classification, evidence package, dimensional signature data from the recording crystals. Sent through every channel I have access to." He pressed his thumb against the bridge of his nose. "The channels are open. The pathways function. The protocols execute correctly. And the responses come back... degraded."
"Degraded how?"
"Incomplete. Fragmented. Like sending a message through water — the shape arrives, but the content is washed out. I can confirm the invocation was received. I cannot confirm by whom. I cannot confirm that the evidence package arrived intact. I cannot confirm that anyone on the other end understood what I sent."
"This has never happened before."
"The dimensional communication architecture has operated without degradation for longer than Ascara has existed. It was designed to survive dimensional collapses, cosmic wars, the death of entire reality clusters. It does not DEGRADE. It works, or it doesn’t."
"And it’s working."
"The machinery works. Something is wrong with what the machinery connects to."
Raven looked at him. At the sword across his knees. At the hands that had calibrated detectors and held teacups and placed a mark on her wrist that pulsed right now with the steady rhythm of his heartbeat.
