Chapter 476: Chapter 475: What the Stone Carries

Location:Seven Peaks — Bryn’s Garden, Command Center

Date/Time:TC1855.11.03

Bryn screamed at dawn.

Raven heard it from the residential quarter — a sound that cut through the formation walls and the living architecture and the morning quiet of a mountain just waking up. Not a pain scream. Not a fear scream. The scream of a child receiving something too large to hold, pouring through a bond that connected her to a consciousness older than the settlement and deeper than the roots that carried it.

Raven ran.

The garden was changed. She felt it before she saw it — a charge in the air, the formation network carrying an energy signature she didn’t recognize, Sylvara’s roots humming at a frequency that was higher and more urgent than their usual ambient pulse. The living architecture of the residential quarter responded to the disturbance with its own adjustments — lights brightening, walls warming, the settlement’s organic infrastructure detecting something happening at its heart and preparing.

She wasn’t the first to arrive. Elian was already there — sitting beside Bryn at the guardian’s base, both hands pressed flat against the bark, his golden eyes wide and unfocused, tracking something through the root network that existed below the level of human perception. Aren stood behind them both, frost spreading from his boots in patterns more complex than anything Raven had seen — dense, layered, the ice mapping something that the formation network couldn’t show.

Bryn had both palms pressed against the oval depression in the guardian’s bark — the nested listening layers that had developed over the summer, the interface that the guardian had grown because a five-year-old taught it what communication meant. Her eyes were squeezed shut. Tears ran down her cheeks. The guardian’s bark pulsed beneath her hands — not the gentle rhythm of daily communication but something urgent, sustained, the resonance of a tree that was receiving a signal it needed to pass on.

"Bryn." Raven knelt beside her. "What’s happening?"

"Something’s beating." Bryn’s voice was small and strained. "Really big. Like a heart but it’s everywhere. The stone heard it and told the guardian, and the guardian told me, and it won’t stop."

"Where is it coming from?"

"Far away. East. Really far." Her fingers dug into the bark. "The guardian came to get me. It never did that before. It came through the walls — I felt it in my hands while I was sleeping and then I was running."
