Chapter 475: Chapter 474: The Turning Season

Location:Seven Peaks and Continental — Multiple Locations

Date/Time:TC1855.07 – TC1855.10

Drake responded in three days.

His message was two lines: Detection specifications received. Guild deployment begins end of week. You owe me a very expensive dinner. Attached was a deployment schedule — forty-seven settlements in the first month, prioritized by proximity to the growth zone’s expanding perimeter. Drake had assigned his best intelligence operatives as corridor observers. The same people who tracked mercenary contracts and monitored noble house machinations would now spend their days watching how people walked through a chill.

The Northern clans responded in five. Not by message — by action. A formation crystal arrived from the War-King’s hall containing a single recording: a sparring ring, two Northern warriors, one of them fighting with the technical competence of someone who knew the movements but not the instincts. The challenger — a woman with braided hair and the build of someone who’d been swinging an axe since she could hold one — took her opponent apart in forty seconds. The opponent fought well. The challenger fought like she’d known him for twenty years and could read his body the way Aren read the formation network. The recording ended with the opponent in a headlock and the woman looking directly at the crystal with an expression that said we found one.

The War-King sent a note with the crystal: The challenge works. We have tested every returned warrior in the eastern clans. Four more found. They fight correctly. They do not fight like brothers. The difference is obvious when you know to look. We will test every clan by month’s end.

The Confederacy responded through Anaya. The bio-growth communities had integrated the truth-root method into their screening within days — the old ways already included a form of this, the elders who could feel when a person’s spirit didn’t match their face. The cold-trigger gave the instinct a mechanism. Two operatives were found in the first week. The Confederate elders were shaken — the idea that something could replace a person’s mind and walk among them undetected cut against every principle of communal awareness their culture was built on. But they adapted. Their history was adaptation. They always adapted.

Continental detection deployment. Three civilizations. One method adapted three ways. The race was running.

Month 07.

The cold corridors found seven more operatives across Seven Peaks’ territory in the first month of full deployment. Seven bodies with consumed brains walking through chilled passages without flinching — a carpenter at Millhaven whose knees should have ached from twenty years of kneeling on hard floors, a teacher at Stonecroft whose wrists should have stiffened from decades of writing, a farmer’s wife at the northern settlement whose lower back should have remembered forty harvests of bending and lifting. Seven extractions. Seven sealed chambers emptied after Silas downloaded the pulse data.

The deep scans on the Stonecroft lumberman and the northern settlement woman — the two original cold-corridor flags — confirmed both. The lumberman had been replaced during a three-day trip to trade timber at the growth perimeter. The woman had been living in the settlement since before the sovereignty declaration — longer than anyone had thought possible for an operative to maintain integration.
