Chapter 455 - 454: The Edge of Green
Location:Seven Peaks — Shadow Pavilion Briefing Room, Verdant Spire Corridor, Eastern Wall
Date/Time:TC1855.05.18
Naida’s office was two levels below the Verdant Spire, windowless, cold, with three exits and a stone chair that discouraged lingering. The formation lights stayed at a functional minimum — enough to read by, not enough to feel comfortable. Everything about the space communicated the same message: say what you came to say, then leave.
Raven had been down here four times in the past year. Each visit had ended with her knowing something she wished she didn’t.
"A month," Naida said. She stood behind the stone desk with the stillness of someone who’d spent years learning that movement communicated weakness. "Thirty-one days since the healer arrived. Twenty-nine since the merchant. Twenty-eight since the scholar. Three individuals, three sectors, three independent surveillance operations running around the clock."
She placed three jade tablets on the desk. One for each stranger. Each tablet held the compressed record of weeks of observation — movements tracked, conversations documented, social connections mapped, behavioral patterns analyzed and re-analyzed by agents trained to find the things people didn’t want found.
"What do the tablets say?" Raven asked.
"Nothing."
The word landed differently here than it had on the eastern wall two nights ago, when Kairos had used it to describe a gap in cosmic observation. That nothing had been terrifying in its implications. This nothing was terrifying in its ordinariness.
"The healer has treated forty-seven patients in the past month," Naida said. "Lin Yue assessed her clinical skills independently and rated them as competent — not exceptional, not inadequate. She’s treated infections, set bones, and managed cultivation strain in three disciples who pushed too hard in the tower. Her methods are consistent with northeast provincial training. She socializes moderately. Eats in the communal kitchen. Sleeps seven hours."
She moved to the second tablet. "The merchant has established a modest trade presence in the commercial quarter. Self-sharpening blades, formation-enhanced tools, preservation jars. His pricing is fair — competitive, not suspiciously generous. He’s expressed interest in long-term residency. He has a preferred seat at the eastern teahouse and goes there every third evening."
Third tablet. "The scholar has been working in the library since her second day. Formation theory research. Her notes are detailed, accurate, and well-organized. She asks intelligent questions. She’s been helping newer arrivals understand the basics of cultivation theory — volunteered, wasn’t assigned."
